Welcome to National Apple Pie Day!

Apple pie is seen as being very American. Just how American? Well, there is not one but two National Apple Pie Days in a year. And it's almost a certainty you've heard the phrase "as American as apple pie." How ironic it is, then, that apple pies didn't even originate in the United States, nor did apples!

Apples came from Asia, and their seeds and cuttings were brought to the Americas by Europeans during colonial times. Prior to this, only crab apples were grown in the Americas. The first apples brought to the Western Hemisphere were tart and were used for making cider. It wasn't until around 1800 when apples better suited for pies—with a higher acidity and crispness—began being grown in the United States. It was also around this time that Johnny Appleseed began traveling the country and helping solidify the association of the apple with America.

No. 16 West Virginia will play No. 20 Syracuse in Orlando's Camping World Bowl (orlandosentinel.com; Romero)

No. 16 West Virginia will face off with No. 20 Syracuse during Orlando's Camping World Bowl.

The game will be played at Camping World Stadium on Friday, Dec. 28, at 5:15 p.m. It will air on ESPN.

The Mountaineers were in the mix for the Big 12 title and feature prolific quarterback Will Grier.

The Orange were a surprise in the ACC, knocking out previous league powers, including FSU.

WVU and Syracuse are former Big East rivals. The Orange enter the game with a 33-27 edge in the series, including a 38-14 victory in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl.

5 College Football Playoff Rankings Reactions, Thoughts, Analysis (CFN; Fiutak)

5. It’s time to celebrate some amazing seasons

Of course it’s all about the top four at the end of the day. That’s the playoff, that’s the big deal, that’s the Holy Grail that every program wants.

But for several teams, being acknowledged in the final College Football Playoff top 25 is amazing.

Iowa State was terrific under Matt Campbell last season, but was it a fluke? Was it an aberration? It was losing a few key parts, it struggled out of the gate, it started a freshman quarterback, and yet it still finished 24th. TCU wasn’t in the top 25. Neither was Texas Tech, Kansas State or Baylor.

Before the season, what would you say if someone told you Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska wouldn’t be in the final top 25 and Northwestern would be 21st? How about Kentucky finishing in the top 14? Washington State 13th? Syracuse 20th?

Orange Watch: Syracuse football justly awarded for 9-3 season by the ACC - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The words echoed mightily when we heard them mentioned during ESPN/ABC’s broadcast of Clemson’s romp over Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship game Saturday night: “Besides Clemson, the only other ranked team in the ACC is Syracuse.” In a season of unfortunate timing, in which the conference’s automatic tie-in to the Orange Bowl is occupied instead by the College Football Playoff national semifinal game between Alabama and Oklahoma, according to the conference’s 2018 bowl hierarchy, Orlando and the Camping World Bowl was the ONLY deserving landing spot for this Syracuse team, symbolic of being the rightful second selection behind conference champion and Cotton Bowl C.F.P. semifinalist Clemson.

As usual this past week in the annual college football season calendar, there was plenty of behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing sorting out the bowl game scenarios dependent on the final games of the season to be completed. A large amount of time was spent talking/texting/conferencing between league offices, their TV network partners and subsequently major sponsors and partners, and athletic director’s offices all around the country.

When the non-College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six bowl pairings were announced Sunday afternoon, it was clear the ACC took care of highlighting both of its 9-3 teams, Syracuse and North Carolina State, placing both schools within “relatively” easy-to-reach Florida (certainly for Sunshine State alumni bases) in the Camping World Bowl against West Virginia and the Gator Bowl versus Texas A&M, respectively, matchups that please the bowl game committees in Orlando and Jacksonville, the ACC, Big XII, and SEC, TV partner ESPN and its major bowl sponsors, and players/coaches/staff and fan bases that yearn for warm weather.

Instant Juice: Syracuse football selected for World Camping Bowl vs. West Virginia - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse football accepting a bid to play in the 2018 Camping World Bowl versus West Virginia:

WHAT HAPPENED: Behind Clemson, the ACC’s top team and College Football Playoff representative, the Orange was the second highest ranked team in the rankings at No. 20. Still, though the Camping World Bowl is slotted for the No. 2 team in the ACC, there was no guarantee that the Orange would be selected, with unranked (but receiving votes) NC State as a rumored participant. But SU’s breakout year in which it won nine games and was ranked for the first time since 2001 proved to be enough, and they will take on Big 12 foe West Virginia.

» Related: Trending upward, Syracuse’s defense can grow even more

ANALYSIS: Orange Nation was biting its fingernails up until the official announcement. Certainly, being the second-ranked ACC team behind Clemson should be the only argument needed for a bowl bid to the No. 2 ACC bowl. But in reality, it means that the Camping Bowl had the right of first refusal, which meant it could take any bowl eligible team from the ACC, regular season records notwithstanding. Orange fans don’t need to worry any more. The Camping Bowl feels like a well-deserved promotion, in a warm climate where the Orange can showcase its skills against the high-scoring Big 12.

HERO: You have to wonder if former ESPN and current Syracuse athletics director John Wildhack had any role in swaying the selection committee. The game is televised on ESPN and Wildhack certainly knows his way around marketing Syracuse to his former fellow executives. Either way, it’s another step toward national recognition for Dino Babers and the Orange, who are bowl bound for the first time since 2013’s Texas Bowl.

WV MetroNews – West Virginia sent to face old rival Syracuse in Camping World Bowl (wvmetronews.com)

West Virginia is going to Disney World — but not for a championship celebration.

The No. 16 Mountaineers (8-3) will play No. 20 Syracuse (9-3) in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on Dec. 28.

It’s a renewal of an old rivalry that dates back to when both schools were in the Big East, and even well before that when they competed as two of the top independents on the East Coast. The schools faced each other every year from 1955-2012. The last of those meetings was in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl, which the Orange won 38-14.

“I’m getting caught up on [the history] as we speak,” said Syracuse coach Dino Babers. “I hear the fan base will be rabid about it and we look forward to going back against our old Big East foes.”

Syracuse is making its first bowl appearance since 2013, while West Virginia is bowling for the fifth straight season.

It’s the second time in three years that West Virginia has been sent to Orlando’s undercard to the Citrus Bowl. The Mountaineers lost to Miami in 2016 when the game was known as the Russell Athletic Bowl.

“We’re excited to be going to the Camping World Bowl once again. From a proximity point of view, it’s spectacular, it’s perfect for us,” said WVU coach Dana Holgorsen. “It’s a great old Big East matchup with Syracuse. I know our fan base will be excited about rekindling some old memories.

“We’re one of the few teams from West Virginia that’s been in the top 15 all year. We’re familiar with how the game works in Orlando and we’re excited about getting down there.”

There shouldn’t be a lack of fireworks, and not just due the proximity to Disney’s nightly displays. West Virginia and Syracuse are two of the nation’s most explosive offenses — two of only 12 teams in college football averaging more than 40 points per game.

“It sounds like a Big 12 school to me, that just happens to be in the ACC,” Holgorsen said.

N.C. State is going back to the Gator Bowl, Wake Forest is going to Birmingham, Ala. and Duke is headed to Louisiana.

The ACC bowl order was finalized on Sunday with the Wolfpack (9-3) headed to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Texas A&M (8-4) in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Dec. 31 (7:30 p.m.).

The Demon Deacons (6-6), who closed the regular season with wins at N.C. State and Duke, will face Memphis (8-5) in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 22.

The Blue Devils (7-5), in their sixth bowl trip in seven years, will go to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. and face Temple (8-4) on Dec. 27.

N.C. State won a school-record 11 games in 2002 and finished that season with a win in the Gator Bowl over Notre Dame. N.C. State can hit double-digit wins for only the second time in school history with its return visit to Jacksonville.

This will be the first time N.C. State plays Texas A&M but Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher spent the previous eight seasons at Florida State and faced the Wolfpack annually. Fisher has a 5-3 record against the Wolfpack.

Clemson (13-0) won its fourth straight ACC title on Saturday and was picked for the College Football Playoff on Sunday. The second-ranked Tigers will face No. 3 Notre Dame (12-0) in the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 29.

The Syracuse football squad continued their hard work on the recruiting trail with another huge linebacker commitment in Mikel Jones.

Just hours after the Syracuse coaching staff got word on the Lee Kpogba commitment, Mikel Jones pledged to enroll at Syracuse University. Jones is a 4-star linebacker out of the powerhouse, IMG Academy. IMG has produced the likes of Chris McCullough on the hardwood, and Andre Cisco and Juan Wallace on the football field.

Jones became the third linebacker commit in the 2019 class joining Kpogba and Canadian Geoff Cantin-Arku. Jones is a big time recruit drawing offers from the likes of Auburn, Clemson, and Georgia. Growing up as a Florida kid, many thought Jones would choose an in-state power, but instead the Syracuse coaching staff won out his recruitment.

1. Orange Bowl (CFP semifinal): No. 4 Oklahoma (12-1) vs. No. 1 Alabama (13-0) – 8 p.m., Dec. 29. ESPN
Kyler Murray vs. Tua Tagovailoa? Yes please. Can we make it a best out of three series? The country’s two most electrifying quarterbacks will face off in primetime for the right to play for the national title. Oklahoma’s offense is piling up yards and points at a rate never before seen in college football history while Tagovailoa has thrown more than nine touchdowns for every interception in 2018. If Oklahoma’s defense can break serve just a couple of times this game has a chance to be a classic.

2. Cotton Bowl (CFP semifinal): No. 3 Notre Dame (12-0) vs. No. 2 Clemson (13-0) – 4 p.m., Dec. 29, ESPN
This is the first time two undefeated teams have met each other in a College Football Playoff Semifinal. It’s history in the making! The Tigers’ vaunted defensive line will be tasked with stopping Notre Dame’s Dexter Williams and getting presure on QB Ian Book. Notre Dame’s defense will have to figure out how to keep Travis Etienne out of the end zone and stop Clemson’s wide receivers from getting open for freshman Trevor Lawrence. If Clemson wins it could face Alabama for the fourth-straight season in the College Football Playoff.

3. Sugar Bowl: No. 15 Texas (9-4) vs. No. 5 Georgia (11-2) – 8:45 p.m., Jan. 1, ESPN
The runners-up to playoff teams meet on New Year’s night in New Orleans. Jake Fromm was throwing dimes against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Will he do the same against a stout Texas secondary? Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger evolved into a well-rounded quarterback in 2018 and receivers Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Collin Johnson match up well with any secondary in the country.

4. Rose Bowl: No. 9 Washington (10-3) vs. No. 6 Ohio State (12-1) – 5 p.m., Jan. 1, ESPN
Washington’s defense with a month to prepare against Ohio State’s offense is incredibly enticing. Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins is a Heisman contender and has thrown for 17 touchdowns over the Buckeyes’ last three games. Washington quarterback Jake Browning has completed over 60 percent of his passes in each of his last three games and the Huskies’ offense features running backs Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. Washington’s gameplan will likely include trying to keep the ball for as long as possible.

5. Camping World Bowl: No. 20 Syracuse (9-3) vs. No. 16 West Virginia (9-3) – 5:15 p.m., Dec. 28, ESPN
This game is in the top five because we’re banking on a ton of points. And West Virginia’s Will Grier, Gary Jennings and David Sills playing in the team’s bowl game. If West Virginia’s star offensive players decide to skip the game we’d understand and drop the game outside our top 10. But we’re hoping for a matchup between Grier and Syracuse’s Eric Dungey, two guys who have been some of the most productive college football quarterbacks over the past couple seasons.

CORRECTION: the SEC Network showed 2 conference games and 4 non-conference games on opening weekend 2014.

From ESPN: ACC Network set to launch August 2019
Swofford said other schools are considering moving conference games to earlier in the season in order to offer better inventory and that at least one of the five games Notre Dame will play against ACC teams could be added during the season, as well. Swofford said he expects the full schedule of football games to be ready by early February.

Does that mean that other ACC conference games could be played on the ACC Network in Week #1? The SEC actually showed 2 conference games on the opening weekend of the SEC Network. Will the ACC follow suit? More than likely, in my opinion.

With Georgia Tech and Clemson spoken for, and with several other teams tied into high-profile non-conference games already, David Teel suggests we should look at the following 7 ACC teams which have either an open weekend or an FCS game in week 1, 2019: Virginia Tech, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Boston College and Syracuse. Looking a little deeper at the combinations which are actually on the schedule for 2019 reveals...

Construction has begun on a $26.2 million mixed-income, mixed-use housing development on a former industrial site in downtown Oswego.

Covering an entire city block, Harbor View Square will feature 75 rental homes -- 57 apartments in a five-story building and 18 two-story townhomes -- and more than 10,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space intended for small retail shops and eateries.

The development site at 68 W. First St. is the former home of Flexo Wire, a wire manufacturer and distributor. Industrial pollution on the long-vacant property will be removed under the state's Brownfield Cleanup Program.

State and local officials and representatives of the developer, Syracuse-based Housing Visions Unlimited, held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site Friday.

"Many in the community have always envisioned the harbor as a premier urban waterfront neighborhood," Housing Visions president and CEO Ben Lockwood said. "This redevelopment is another step towards the Oswego Harbor revitalization effort led by the city of Oswego."

Clemson Football: List of ACC Bowl Games, Early Thoughts (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

Here’s a look at the 11 bowl games that will be played by teams in conference.

ACC Bowl Matchups:

  • Cotton Bowl (CFB Playoff- Dallas): Clemson vs. Notre Dame
  • Camping World Bowl (Orlando): Syracuse vs. West Virginia
  • Tax Slayer Bowl (Jacksonville): NC State vs. Texas A&M
  • Pinstripe Bowl (New York): Miami vs. Wisconsin
  • Belk Bowl (Charlotte): Virginia vs. South Carolina
  • Sun Bowl (El Paso): Pittsburgh vs. Stanford
  • Independence Bowl (Shreveport): Duke vs. Temple
  • Quick Lane Bowl (Detroit): Georgia Tech vs. Minnesota
  • First Responders Bowl (Dallas): Boston College vs. Boise State
  • Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham): Wake Forest vs. Memphis
  • Military Bowl (Annapolis): Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati
Early Thoughts:

Other than Clemson, there aren’t many ACC teams that I favor in these matchups. I really think the Syracuse-West Virginia game could be a fun one for those who like offense.

NC State-Texas A&M will also be an interesting one to watch. Miami and Wisconsin is a bowl game that is a matchup of what used to be two New Year’s Six opponents.

It will be interesting to see how Boston College (Boise State), Wake Forest (Memphis) and Virginia Tech (Cincinnati) play against some of the top group of five teams in the nation.

To Hell With the ACC

The ACC's bowl regulations are a joke. The conference constantly hamstrings GT in scheduling practices and rule changes. Additionally, Swofford shows open disdain towards GT. I would love to talk to the Big 10 right now. Big 10, come get you some of this Atlanta media market.

Would love to leave this garbage conference
