Welcome to Green Monday!

In order to participate in the day, all you need to do is buy something online. Many of the major online retailers have web pages or specials dedicated to the day, although deals are not as extensive as those for Black Friday or Cyber Monday. If you choose to use a standard form of shipping instead of the two day which some retailers now offer, you should still receive your orders in time for Christmas.

SU Wants Bowl Practices to Set 2019 Foundation (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff)

Along with winning their bowl game vs. West Virginia, SU wants these practices to set up the 2019 team.

Camping World Bowl 2018: Syracuse Orange vs West Virginia Mountaineers (smokingmusket.com; Nite & Miller)

The bowl was founded in 1990 by Raycom and was originally played at Joe Robbie Stadium outside the city of Miami. It was formed under the name Sunshine Football Classic, but due to corporate title sponsorships, was never actually contested under this name, nor even referred to as such except during brief intervals between corporate sponsors. During its Miami existence, it successively went by the names Blockbuster Bowl, CarQuest Bowl, and the MicronPC Bowl.

In 2001, the bowl changed hands, and was relocated to Orlando. The bowl briefly became known as the Tangerine Bowl, a historic moniker, which was the original title of the game now known as the Citrus Bowl. Foot Locker, the parent company of Champs Sports, purchased naming rights in 2004, naming it the Champs Sports Bowl. In early 2012, naming rights were agreed to by Russell Athletic for games through 2017. In early 2017, Camping World signed an agreement with Florida Citrus Sports to be the new title sponsor of the game through 2020.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are 0-4 all time in this bowl. They first appeared in 1994 vs South Carolina Gamecock and lost 24-21. They appeared three years later against Georgia Tech and lost 35-30. Their third appearance came in 2010 in Bill Stewart’s last year when the Mountaineers lost to N.C. State 23-7. Their fourth appearance came two years ago in 2016 when the Mountaineers played Miami-Florida Hurricanes and lost 31-14 in Skyler Howard’s final game.

HERTZEL COLUMN: WVU still wishes to set record straight after unflattering portrayal in ‘The Express’ (timeswv.com; Hertzel)

It was strictly coincidence that the other night, not long after it had been announced that West Virginia would play its one-time rival Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando, I happened upon a movie on television entitled “The Express.”

This, of course, was the story based — quite loosely, we came to find out — upon the inspiring but tragic life and death of Syracuse’s star running back of the early 1960s Ernie Davis, the first black winner of the Heisman Trophy and the first man to carry on the legacy of Jim Brown at Syracuse.

Davis’ Heisman came in 1961, leading him to be the first player selected in the NFL draft of 1962 by the Washington Redskins, who immediately traded him to the Cleveland Browns. A dynamic performer who was a spectacular physical specimen, Davis’ career and life were soon after cut short as he was diagnosed to be suffering from leukemia and died at age 23 before ever playing a professional game.

The movie surely wasn’t being shown because of the bowl matchup announcement. More likely it found its way back onto the airwaves with what really was meant to be an inspiring story of a young black man in the midst of the civil rights movement overcoming large obstacles to reach the pinnacle of success only to be cut down by a dreaded disease before he could reach his full potential or help change the world at a time when it was changing rapidly.

Having come across the movie while channel surfing, what caught my eye first was that I just happened to hit it at the moment the depicted Davis and Syracuse playing at WVU, supposedly during his first season, and I was literally taken aback by the horrendous way WVU fans were portrayed.

ACC Football Rx: 2018 Recruiting - 3 Lagging, 1 Promising (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From CBS Sports: Six teams that have work to do before National Signing Day
These teams are way behind their expected pace for the approaching early signing period

Miami
Current rank: No. 30
Status: Miami has had five decommits since November. It's a program that traditionally gets an early start to recruiting and then fights off the rest of the country for its homegrown talent. This year, it is struggling to win that fight, continues to be plagued by quarterback recruiting and is decelerating to the finish line. How's this for a snapshot of 2019: Miami has sent out several offers to New York City prospects and has lost a South Florida prospect to Syracuse.
Top December target: The No. 1 wide receiver in the country is Jadon Haselwood. He's a former Georgia commit that the Bulldogs want back in the fold but South Florida has his attention and most of the Crystal Ball predictions.

North Carolina
Current rank: No. 91
Status: There's a lot of reasons for North Carolina fans to be optimistic about Mack Brown. Short term recruiting success isn't one of them. Brown takes over with no meaningful relationships in place with prospects, no working context for the 2019 class and an underwhelming class to build on. Since Larry Fedora's firing, North Carolina has lost four of its 12 commits and its most recent commitment was August. One of Brown's first moves as head coach was to hire dogged recruiter Tim Brewster and promote Tommy Thigpen. Both will be asked to do some heavy lifting in the coming weeks.

Top December target: The No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country is a North Carolina native named Sam Howell. He's committed to Florida State and just lost his offensive coordinator Walt Bell to the UMass head coaching gig. The Tar Heels are in desperate need of a quarterback and Howell has already taken a November official visit to Chapel Hill.

Louisville
Current rank: No. 102
Status: Scott Satterfield is a really good coach, but he has inherited a mess. Let's put in perspective what he has taken over from a recruiting standpoint. Even with a coaching change and even with a 2-10 season behind it, Louisville is currently ranked behind a Western Kentucky team that also fired its coach and went 3-9. It's ranked behind a Central Michigan team that fired its coach and went 1-11. It's ranked behind Harvard. It's also ranked behind Satterfield's former program, Appalachian State.
Top December target: Local prospects. Consider that Rondale Moore is a Louisville native and went to Purdue. Consider that in a banner year in the state of Kentucky that features eight four-star prospects, none are committed to Louisville. But more than any specific prospect, Louisville just needs to get off the mat and get started.

ACC Football Rx: Alabama Dynasty vs. Florida State - 12/10/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Alabama is dominant right now, having won national championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017, plus a 2nd place finish in 2016 and top four in 2014... that's pretty good.

PickSixPreviews says to put this into perspective, FSU finished in the Top 5 every year from 1987-2000 (14 straight).

Saban's Alabama dynasty finished 6th (2008), 10th (2010), 7th (2013), and the current streak is just 4 Top 5 finishes in a row. Alabama would need a full decade more just to tie Bowden's FSU!
__________

Most Wins, last 30 years:
292- Ohio State
282- FSU
278- Florida
275- OU
272- Nebraska
264- Miami
264- UGA
263- Alabama
260- Michigan
259- Clemson
258- PSU
258- Virginia Tech
253- Oregon
251- Texas
249- Wisconsin
248- Tennessee
247- Auburn
247- Notre Dame
246- BYU

ACC Football Rx: OT: Snow Day! 12/9/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

It sounds like there's already snow on the ground at Clemson, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech - and it's forecast for UNC, Duke and UVA. I can tell you there's also snow here in Charlotte.

Click here for NOAA snow precipitation loop.

Meanwhile, Louisville is a balmy 44F (but not for long - forecast low is 23!)

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018/12/09/the-bowl-system-is-dying-and-the-players-are-
killing-it/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Zemek)

Now that the college football season has come to an end and we are ramping up for the Bowl season we are seeing something great happen. In my opinion, the Bowl system has held back the sport from becoming great. The bowls and their nonprofit committees are stuck in the past. If you don’t believe that, remember what B1G Commissioner Jim Delany said while debate about the CFP. Delany and the B1G fought tooth and nail to kill the CFP because he believed in “keeping the Rose Bowl sacred.”

This is the thinking of one of the most powerful men in college football. The amount of money that the Bowls throw around to keep this thinking is insane!

However, the winds of change are blowing. They are not coming from the players. The players have decided that these bowl games are meaningless. It started with Christian McCaffery and Leonard Fournette. Then there was Bradley Chubb DeShon Elliott, Derwin James, Connor Williams, and Royce Freeman. This year you have Will Grier, Kelvin Hamron, Germain Pratt (although he was injured at the end of the year and I get it), Deebo Samuel, Noah Fant, Rashan Gary, Greedy Williams, Ed Oliver, N’Keal Harry, Donnell Greene, Justice Hill, and Yondy Cajuste.

I have to admit, if I were one of these players, I’d also skip a meaningless game that is not going to help my draft stock. I don’t actually care if they skip these games to focus on their future. If I am on the fence about going into a bowl game and I see some of these players skipping it, that is one less incentive to actually go to that bowl game.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018/12/09/clemson-pair-in-the-top-5-of-2019-early-heisman-odds/ (allsportsdicussion.com; Fann)

Just a quick post for tonight. Saturday Oklahoma QB Kyler Murrary won the 2018 Heisman Trophy, but of course we instantly turn to the 2019 odds. We find the Clemson pair of RB Travis Etienne and QB Trevor Lawrence. They don’t rebuild at Clemson, they reload. Clemson will likely lose everyone off their All-Star defensive line, so they just enter 2019 with 2 Heisman candidates on offense. The rest of the ACC just shakes their head.

@OddsShark

Odds to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy (@betmybookie):

Tagovailoa +250
Lawrence +550
Fromm +650
Taylor +675
Etienne/Swift +725
Ehlinger +850
Martell/Kendall/Jeudy +1000
Moore/Patterson/Dillon +1500
Martinez/Hurts +2000
Benjamin/Costello +2000
Bryant/Tate/King +2500
Field +900

FSU Football: 3 stats show how insane 2018 schedule really was )(chopchat.com; Parker)

FSU football could tie school record for fewest number of losing teams played in one season

Who would have thought that a game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Marshall Thundering Herd would have had anything to do with the Seminoles, but the win by the Hokies that got them to 6-6 on the regular season has big implications for the Noles.

Right now, Louisville is the only team that the Seminoles played this season who has a losing record after the Cardinals finished 2-10 on the year. Two teams that FSU football played this season – Virginia Tech and Wake Forest – are each at .500 going into their bowl games.

If the Hokies and Demon Deacons come out on top, the 2018 schedule would tie the 1967 schedule for the Seminoles as the only ones with just one losing team being played over the course of a season.

If one of those teams loses their bowl game, the 2018 slate for the Noles would be just the ninth in the history of the program to play just two losing teams over the course of a year. So, for the sake of history alone, we might have to swallow our pride and root for both teams to take home bowl wins.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: ACC dominance is the key (thetandd.com; Lentz)

For Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, the last four seasons have been incredibly special.

Not because the Tigers have been able to reach the playoffs for four straight years or because they won the school’s second national championship two years ago, but because of the four ACC titles they have won.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: ACC title game good Tiger elixir

“That’s what it's all about. If we can compete for this league, then we have a chance to do bigger and better things,” Swinney said. “So, you know, this is important. When I got the job, that was when I said, 'We got to compete in the league. We'll become great from the inside out. We got to learn how to compete in practice. We got to learn how to think. Got to create this attitude of belief. I got to get other people to believe in what we're doing. We got to become a consistent team in our league, then we'll blossom from there.'”

While many around the country may look at the ACC as the ugly duckling of the Power 5 conferences, for Swinney, the Tigers ability to win the league has made everything possible.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018...ech-and-north-carolina-answered-by-mattzemek/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Zemek)

ACC QUESTION of the WEEK : Louisville, Georgia Tech and North Carolina hired new head coaches. What should excite each fan base the most about the new hires?

Louisville hired one of the most competent, organized and consistent coaches in the country. Scott Satterfield cranked out winners at Appalachian State with noticeable regularity. His teams took the fight to the likes of Tennessee and Penn State on the road in front of 100,000 people in separate seasons. Satterfield will now have a chance to recruit high-end athletes at Louisville and give the Cardinals a complete staff. Bobby Petrino didn’t hire good coordinators in his second go-round at UL, which cost him dearly. Satterfield should be able to upgrade the whole of the Cardinals’ staff.

No one hired Troy’s Neal Brown, one of the more puzzling developments of this coaching carousel. Louisville should be thrilled that it grabbed the other excellent Sun Belt coach on the market, while North Carolina chose to pass.

Georgia Tech got a coach who was born in Atlanta and left a job at Temple to come home. Geoff Collins kept Temple relevant and competitive, with minimal slippage compared to Matt Rhule’s spectacular body of work in Philadelphia before he moved to Baylor. Collins offers strong indications that he will generate consistently solid results. The question is if Collins can go beyond “solid.”

The best reason to think he will rise to a higher plateau on The Flats: Collins is a superb defensive coach. The Ted Roof years should melt away, which should improve Georgia Tech’s fortunes even with the disappearance of the triple option from the picture. If Tech can wreck ACC Coastal opponents with a fire-breathing defense, who cares if the Collins project is low on style points?

(no title) (pittpov.com; Monteleone)

The University of Pittsburgh fanbase loves a good Tight End. Maybe it’s because Mike Ditka helped to define the position in the late 50’s when he played at Pitt (’58-’60) and in the 60’s when he played for Bears, Eagles and Cowboys. Maybe it’s because we were spoiled by Paul Chryst’s fine recruiting of the position and Matt Canada’s outstanding usage of it. Maybe it’s because we just love power football.

Either way, Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson’s usage of the Tight End position has been a sore topic for Pitt fans since Watson took the controls in 2017. The fanbase’s disgust seemingly manifested itself over the off-season when four-star Tight End Charles Reeves transferred, and then again mid-season in 2018 when starting Tight End Tyler Sear had a supposed disagreement with head coach Pat Narduzzi, which ended with Sear leaving the team for “personal reasons”. There was also the Chris Clark debacle, where the seemingly talented but also seemingly-troubled four-star UCLA transfer stepped away from the program for personal reasons.

When you combine Sear, Reeves’ and Clark’s departures with the fact that Watson & Narduzzi had two tight ends de-commit from the 2018 recruiting class – Matt Alaimo and Jay Symonds, and one from 2019 – Travis Koontz, you can see why the fan base is concerned.

$62M apartment building proposed in Syracuse University area; tax breaks sought (PS; Moriarty)

A New Jersey company has proposed building a $62 million, 283-unit apartment building in the Syracuse University area.

Northside Genesee Associate, has filed plans with the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency to build the 350,000-square-foot building on a 1.6-acre site in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of East Genesee Street.

It would be constructed on the north side of the street, directly across the road from the 505 on Walnut, a 126-unit student housing development that opened in August.

Northside Genesee Associates is a limited liability corporation created by Michaels Development, of Marlton, New Jersey, the same company that built the 505 on Walnut.
Unlike the 505, the new building would not be built for student housing.

Instead, it would target young professionals, medical professionals, medical school graduates and university staff, according to the plans filed with the development agency.

Well, John -
"organically" had better happen within a week after the bowl game, at the absolute latest.
