Welcome to the Festival of Unmentionable Thoughts!

There is scant information as to what this holiday is about, apparently because whoever created it thought its details were unmentionable. Some people probably celebrate it, likely inside their own heads, without mentioning it. They probably think about taboo subjects and unmentionable thoughts.
Festival of Unmentionable Thoughts, also known as Taboo Day, is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on December 12th.

Football: West alum Ryan Guthrie has joined ACC's ranks of elites at Syracuse )forsythnews.com; Almeda)

As the clock ticked down to zero on Syracuse’s thrilling 27-24 upset win over No. 2 Clemson last season, former West Forsyth standout Ryan Guthrie took everything in.

He watched the students spill onto to the field over the railings and felt the roar of the crowd, and he knew in that moment that holding out for a big-time Division I opportunity, a decision that some people doubted him for, was the right choice.

“The Carrier Dome is the best place to play, I believe,” Guthrie said. “That homefield advantage at the Carrier Dome is unlike anything else. If you pack that place, it's very loud.

“It was shaking. I just remember seeing everybody run on the field... It was incredible.”

Since that first season with the Orange, Guthrie has become one of the top linebackers in the ACC, a result thought unthinkable as a late-blooming player with the Wolverines just a few years ago. But by taking an unconventional road to the top-flight college ranks through the cornfields of Iowa, Guthrie’s work ethic has paid off, even if there were some adjustments to his road along the way.

Former West head coach Adam Clack knew all about the kind of player Guthrie was. He had only been a starting linebacker during his senior season, but Clack had seen more than enough to vouch for him. But colleges didn’t see him the way Clack did – Guthrie couldn’t even get an in-state walk-on opportunity with his stellar grades, and the frustration mounted.

https://www.salisburypost.com/2018/12/12/college-football-gillispie-proud-of-grandsons-success/ (salisburypost.com; London)

A chunk of Salisbury resident Bill Gillispie’s contribution to North Carolina sports history is known to many.

When Gillispie and teammate Elmore Hill manned center and left field for Gastonia Post 23 as teenage ground-breakers in the summer of 1964, they integrated American Legion baseball in this state.

In ceremonies held in Salisbury in 2015, Gillispie and Hill were inducted into the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, not so much because of their role as pioneers, but because they were standouts who led their team to the Area IV championship. Gillispie, known as “Jet” in those days, ran wild on the bases and batted over .400 in a three-season career in an era when pitching was king and hitters swung wood.

It is less widely known that Gillispie also was one of six black players who integrated Gaston County high school football in the fall of 1965, competing for previously all-white programs.

Careers of Camping World coaches have special tie (247sports.com; Casazza)

Dino Babers and his Camping World Bowl counterpart Dana Holgorsen have something in common about their careers, something that goes beyond time spent on the sideline in Texas and hitching a ride to the Air Raid offense.

They are offensive innovators who have poured themselves into the third side of the ball. Holgorsen took control of West Virginia's special teams upon handing off the offense and calling plays to Jake Spavital. At his introductory press conference at Syracuse three years ago, Babers vowed to make special teams something to be proud of.

"That was my first coordinator job when I was coming up," Babers said. "I understand how important that is."

Camping World Bowl Game Will Not Feature Schwartzwalder Trophy (dubvnation.com; Kiddy)

West Virginia and Syracuse might have a sordid past as Big East rivals, but you’d never know it by what’s not at stake in this month’s upcoming Camping World Bowl.

Mountaineer fans are just over two weeks away from a see-your-old-ex-girlfriend-at-your-high-school-reunion Bowl matchup with former rival Syracuse. Plenty of WVU fans are looking forward to another bout with the Orange — the first since the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl, mind you — but unfortunately, the rivalry’s chief prize won’t be up for grabs.

Camping World Bowl Stat Analysis: Syracuse vs. West Virginia – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; D.A.)

We are less than two weeks away from Syracuse’s clash with West Virginia in Orlando. It’s ACC vs. Big 12 even though it used to be a Big East matchup, and it’s a fascinating bowl scenario. The Mountaineers are just 1.5-point favorites at Bookmaker, check their review for more info on them.

The Rivalry

Syracuse leads the all-time series against West Virginia 33-27. After a stint from ’02 to ’09 when the Mountaineers won eight straight, the last three meetings have all gone in favor of the Orange. That said, the last time these two teams met was back in ’12 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

We all know what kind of magical year this has been for SU. It’s been a mentally tough Syracuse team this season. The #20 Orange almost followed up last year’s shocker with another big upset over Clemson. A beating at the hands of the #3 Fighting Irish and a tough overtime loss to Pitt were the only other losses this season. The Orange have one of the most balanced offenses in all of college football. It will be a serious test for the Mountaineers and its questionable 60th ranked defense. Play calling on the attack will be critical for Dino Babers and Mike Lynch. Keeping WVU off-balance is their key to victory on this one.

Should Eric Dungey skip Syracuse’s bowl game this season? (itlh.com; Patrick)

Already banged up from a number of injuries this season, should the quarterback of the Syracuse football team skip the team’s bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft?

For the first time in five years, the Syracuse football team will be participating in a postseason bowl game. On December 28, the Orange will be taking on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2018 aCamping World Bowl.

A few days ago, it was revealed that West Virginia senior quarterback Will Grier will not be participating in the matchup so that he can begin preparations for the 2019 NFL Draft. This is something that has become more and more of a trend over the years in college football and Grier is one of many 2019 prospects to withdraw from their team’s bowl game this season.

Given that he is a senior, Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey will also be getting ready to impress pro scouts over the next few months to improve his draft stock. Should Dungey follow Grier’s lead by not playing in the Orange’s bowl game and begin his draft preparation early?

ACC Football Rx: OT: Big XII should these add 2 teams (RX; HM)

Why the Big XII should add Cincinnati and Memphis:
1) Adds two new states: Ohio and Tennessee
2) Bridges WVU to the rest of the conference
3) Cincinnati and Memphis both play pretty good football
4) Cincinnati and Memphis both play pretty good basketball, too.
5) A conference named Big XII should have, you know, 12 teams.

Why the Big XII should stay at 10 teams:
$$$

Of course, that's SHORT TERM money - those other issues all have an affect on long-term money. But when you're in a "what have you done for me lately" business, even a 5-year planning horizon is sometimes considered too long!

ACC Football Rx: Ranking 2018 Bowls (RX; HM)

...
20. Sun Bowl
Stanford vs. Pittsburgh -- Dec. 31, 2 p.m.: I enjoy offensive line play. Not everybody does, but if you do, you'll like this game. Pitt has one of the better run-blocking lines in the country, and Stanford's offensive line is a Stanford offensive line, even if it's not quite up to the standards of previous Stanford offensive lines.
TOO HIGH - saying this game will feature great offensive line play is not a glowing endorsement.

19. Camping World Bowl
No. 16 West Virginia vs. No. 20 Syracuse -- Dec. 28, 5:15 p.m.: It's a good thing these teams are in the Camping World Bowl because you might want to bring a tent and a sleeping bag. This game should last at least four hours, and will likely creep closer to five given the way these offenses work, and the defenses don't.
TOO LOW - Anytime you get a pent-up rivalry in a bowl game, you know it's going to be good.

18. Gator Bowl
NC State vs. No. 19 Texas A&M -- Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m.: This game falls right in the middle of the rankings because that's just how I feel about both of these teams. They certainly aren't bad, but I don't know how good they truly are, either. They're just kind of there. And that could lead to a great game.
ABOUT RIGHT. Two very good but somewhat disappointing teams. Who wants it more?

14. Independence Bowl
Temple vs. Duke -- Dec. 27, 1:30 p.m.: When you get to this middle third of the bowl games there's very little separating any one game from the other, but this one gets a boost not only because it should be close, but there's potential for it to get loose.
TOO HIGH. Duke and Temple? What were they thinking?

NC State adds highly rated quarterback Ty Evans to 2019 football class (myrtlebeachonline.com; Hyman)

With a week before the early signing day period starts, N.C. State added a quarterback to its incoming class.

Ty Evans (6-2, 192), the No. 2 player from the state of Colorado, verbally committed to N.C. State Monday evening. Evans, from Palmer Ridge High School, originally committed to the University of Colorado last January, but was in Raleigh this weekend for an official visit.

Late Monday night Evans tweeted that he coming to Raleigh, posting on his page “It’s been a long road but I’m proud to be a part of #Pack19!”

Dave Doeren now has 22 committed players in the class of 2019. The first day of the early signing period is Dec. 19. Doeren has two quarterbacks in the upcoming class in Evans and former Florida State quarterback Bailey Hockman, who played at Hutchinson Community College after transferring from FSU.

Clemson’s on-field success opens doors far and wide on recruiting trail (islandpacket.com; Connolly)

While Clemson’s players were given last week off to relax and recharge before the College Football Playoff, the coaching staff has been busy at work since the conclusion of the ACC championship game against Pitt.

The Tigers gathered as a team to learn their College Football Playoff fate on the Sunday after the ACC championship game. Then the staff hit the road to try to find more talent to bring to Clemson.
It is not easy being out recruiting at this time of year as coaches are away from their families, but it is nice to be greeted by recruits and high school coaches happy to see staff members from one of the top college programs in the country. The Tigers have won four consecutive ACC titles, are in the College Football Playoff for the fourth consecutive year and are 13-0 entering the Cotton Bowl showdown with Notre Dame.

“It makes being away from your family a lot better. You’ve got some extra juice going in to check out this year’s guys, and I’ll celebrate with them and their families, guys that have been committed for a while,” Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. “And then certainly recruiting some of the 2020, 2021 kids as well. We’ve got great name-brand recognition. You’ve got to strike while the iron’s hot.”

Brooklyn Pickle breaks ground on 3rd location (PS; Weaver)

Syracuse's northern suburbs will get its first Brooklyn Pickle next year.

The Syracuse-based deli is building its third restaurant at the site of the former Hafner's Red Barn, on Buckley Road.

"We broke ground last Monday," said Craig Kowadla, part-owner in the local chain. "We're hoping to be open in June."

The deli bought three acres at the site, Kowadla said. The restaurant will be about 5,700 square feet. That's similar to the Brooklyn Pickle on Burnet Avenue near Midler Avenue in Syracuse.

"We'll have a little more parking," he said.

Brooklyn Pickle first opened in 1975 at 2222 Burnet Ave. in Syracuse. A second location is at 1600 W. Genesee St.

The deli is known for its sandwiches, soups and subs. One of its signature dishes is The Brooklyn Pickle - a sandwich of corned beef, pastrami on dark rye with Swiss cheese and housemade Russian dressing.

I vaguely recall that the last time we played WVA in a bowl game, Dr. Gross said that the Schwartzwalder trophy would only be contested in a regular season game, not a bowl game. Does anyone else remember that?

I cannot imagine Eric Dungey not playing in this game.

Skipping a game like this one is just not in his DNA.
