Welcome to National Pass Gas Day!

Passing gas—everyone does it. The technical term for the gas that builds up is flatus, and when someone passes it out of their body we say they have flatulence. That's a nice way of putting it—most people just call it farting. The word "fart" was thought up in 1632; it means "to send forth wind from the anus," and comes from the Old English word "feortan," which means "to break wind." Farts can travel at speeds of about 10 feet per second, almost 7 miles per hour. On average, people fart about 14 times a day, producing enough gas to fill up a balloon. This means everyone should have multiple opportunities to fully celebrate National Pass Gas Day today.

Ex-Rogers football standout reflects on first season at Syracuse (newportri.com; Barrett)

Terrell Bennett, a walk-on with the Orange, didn’t see any game action during his rookie season, but that won’t deter him. In fact, it only drives him.

Terrell Bennett recalled going through the rigors of tough, early morning workouts, then starting his day as a student at Syracuse University.

While other members of the football team enjoyed the fruits of their labor, Bennett, a first-year walk-on and graduate of Rogers High School, used his rookie season as a building block. The 230-pound linebacker didn’t see any game action, but that will hardly be a deterrent as he looks toward his future with the Orange.

“I did have a goal to get on the field, but really, it was a blessing,” Bennett said during a phone interview Friday morning. “I realized there were a lot of fundamentals I needed to work on. I can see now that I wasn’t ready yet. I needed to really learn the playbook. Staying back, I was grateful for that.”

The life of a Division I athlete is not an easy one. There’s practice, weight-lifting, film study and then, of course, classes and homework. Bennett, a communications major with a double minor in real estate and entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises, said he learned how to manage his time after arriving on campus in August for the preseason.

Even unknowns provide optimism for Syracuse football in 2019 - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Even with the Camping World Bowl win coming a week ago and fading ever further into the rearview mirror, the 2018 Syracuse football team still leaves a warm feeling in the fanbase. Led by a charismatic coach and one of the best players in school history at quarterback, the Orange returned to national prominence with ten wins and the long-term arrow for the program headed up.

Of course, Eric Dungey and a lot of his teammates experienced their final day in the sun at SU in the win over West Virginia. Chris Slayton, Dontae Strickland, Kielan Whitner, Jamal Custis, and many other players wrote the final chapter of their respective college football histories in that victory in Orlando.

Even with all of those players departing, there is a lot for Orange fans to look forward to, both known and unknown.

Yes, unknown.

Of course, there are a lot of players who played leading roles the field and will return next season. Moe Neal fell just shy of 1,000 yards from scrimmage and Sean Riley led the team with 64 receptions. Both juniors will almost certainly play big roles for SU next season.

Hamp Cheevers Declares for 2019 NFL Draft - Boston College Athletics (bceagles.com)

Boston College junior cornerback Hamp Cheevers announced Saturday that he will forego his senior season and enter the 2019 NFL Draft. The nation's co-leader with seven interceptions in 2018, Cheevers had a breakout year in his first season as a starter for the Eagles.

Cheevers earned All-America honors by six organizations following the season.

The Trenton, Fla., native, tied for second on the squad with seven pass breakups in addition to his seven interceptions.

An All-ACC first-team selection, Cheevers allowed just 35 receptions on 74 targets in 2018 for 433 yards, according to Pro Football Focus. Cheevers yielded a passer rating when targeted this season of just 40.0, which ranked second in the conference among cornerbacks. Cheevers played in 92% of his team's defensive snaps in 2018 after playing in just 30% last year.

NC State Football 2019: Offensive Depth Chart Projections (247sports.com; Clark)

Although NC State's 2018 football season ended less than a week ago, it's never to early to look ahead to 2019.

The Wolfpack, which has won 18 games overall and 11 in the ACC in the past two seasons, is a program on the rise in college football. While State is losing some key players from this past season, the Pack has some talented returners and a big-time recruiting class.

As Dave Doeren enters his seventh season as State's head coach, the Wolfpack is poised for another exciting year.

Offensively, receiver Emeka Emezie, running back Ricky Person, tight end Cary Angeline, offensive guard Joshua Fedd-Jackson and offensive tackle Justin Witt return.

Is Alabama and Clemson dominance bad for college football? Swinney, Saban weigh in (myrtlebeachonline.com; Connolly)

Alabama and Clemson are the top two programs in college football.

There have been 11 games played in the College Football Playoff over the past four years, and either Clemson or Alabama has won 10 of them.

There is talk that having two programs so dominant is bad for college football. But Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Sunday that he is paying no attention to anyone who might feel that way.

“I’m not going to apologize for having a great team and a great program and a bunch of committed guys, and coach (Nick) Saban is not either,” Swinney said in the final news conference leading up to Monday’s title game. “I think the objective is to get the two best teams. That’s kind of the way it is. If that’s not best for college football, then why did we even do it?”

Clemson and Alabama will have combined to win the past four national titles at the conclusion of Monday night’s game, and the two teams will have won 11 of the past 12 College Football Playoff games.

K.J. Henry has learned plenty during his redshirt season at Clemson (greensboro.com; Dell)

Maybe another five-star recruit would be upset about being given a redshirt their first season, but K.J. Henry has been around the game long enough to understand the lay of the land.

Henry, a former star at West Forsyth, isn’t bitter or frustrated he won’t play in today’s championship game for the Clemson Tigers. Clemson takes on Alabama at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., and Henry will be in uniform wearing No. 13 but won’t see any action.

Unless a cadre of injuries hits Clemson’s talented defensive line, he isn’t expected to make it onto the field. Three of the four starters along the Tigers line, including the suspended Dexter Lawrence, have the potential to be selected in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft.

“Coach (Dabo) Swinney and the rest of the coaches agreed that it’s best for me to have that redshirt season,” Henry said.

Henry appeared in four games for the Tigers (14-0), but NCAA rules say he didn’t use up a season of eligibility.

As it turned out, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Henry played his final game of the season for the Tigers in his hometown.

Clemson Football: Scoring Prediction for National Championship (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The Clemson football team will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship. Here’s our final analysis and scoring prediction for the game.

This is it, Clemson football fans.

After a long winter, spring and summer, the 2018 season finally began. Every single Tiger fan had their eyes set on getting back to the National Championship game.

A long road stood in front of the Clemson football team and getting back to Alabama for a fourth-straight year.

There was some drama, a couple of close calls and plenty of joy as the Tigers ran the table and won the ACC Championship, heading into the College Football Playoff with a perfect 13-0 record.

From ‘Bambi’ to MVP: Austin Bryant an unheralded key to Clemson’s success (thestate.com; Connolly)

Clemson has made the College Football Playoff four consecutive seasons. Although he doesn’t get the same recognition as fellow defensive linemen Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Clelin Ferrell, Tigers senior Austin Bryant has been a part of them all.

Bryant is wrapping up a remarkable career at Clemson that includes him earning first-team All-American honors as a junior and All-ACC honors this season. He was named the Defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl last month and is a big reason why the Tigers are playing in the national title game for the third time in four years.

But before the 6-foot-6, 280-pound Bryant was terrorizing opposing offensive linemen and living in opponents’ backfields, his play was earning him a nickname from former defensive line coach Marion Hobby. Only it wasn’t a good one.

“He came in and he had a bad problem with falling. I don’t know if it was because he was clumsy or his legs were too weak at the time, but everybody called him Bambi,” Ferrell shared as he laughed. “Coach Hobby called him Bambi. It didn’t matter what he was doing. He could just be doing like a sprint and he would just fall. He had the worst feet ever when he was a freshman. All of that’s in the past now, but I just remember all the times of him falling and his helmet was too small. It was ridiculous.”

Column: Bay Area no place for college football championship :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.com; AP; Newberry)

The downtown streets were soaked and largely empty. Extra police officers loitered at the intersections, but they mostly just talked among themselves. On the weekend before one of the country's biggest sporting events, the host city appeared to have hit the snooze button.

This shouldn't be a surprise.

For some reason, the College Football Playoff took its national championship game to Silicon Valley.

Maybe if a bunch of gamers were settling the title on a computer screen, it would all make sense. But since this is an actual football game, contested by two teams from the opposite side of the country, it's hard to understand why the powers-that-be decided on the Bay Area (technically, San Jose and Santa Clara) as an appropriate spot for the fifth edition of their championship extravaganza.

Simply put, college football is no big deal in this part of the world.

One game — even a really big game between the nation's two most dominant programs, Alabama and Clemson — isn't going to change that reality.

Previewing No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 2 Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship - Stadium (watchstadium.com; Wittry)

For the fourth consecutive year and the third time in the national championship game, Alabama and Clemson will meet in the College Football Playoff. Like the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 2-ranked Tigers will face off as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the playoff in some order.

This time both teams are undefeated and the winner will become the first FBS team in the modern era of college football to go 15-0 in a season. They’ll share the field Monday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET with television coverage on ESPN.

It’s Alabama vs. Clemson Part IV and a true heavyweight matchup in the sport. One of the two schools has been ranked No. 1 in the CFP rankings in 26 of the 31 weeks in which the playoff selection committee has released an updated top 25 rankings. Both the Crimson Tide and Tigers have been ranked in every edition of the CFP rankings, something that only Ohio State can also claim.

However, this season’s matchup is different than the last three. Both teams made a quarterback change since No. 4 Alabama defeated No. 1 Clemson 24-6 in last season’s College Football Playoff Semifinal.

Alabama football handled a better defense than Clemson, Mississippi State (bamahammer.com; Evans)

The best indication of Clemson’s chances to slow the Alabama football offense is the Crimson Tide game against a better defense, Mississippi State.

Alabama football has plenty of offense to beat Clemson. Not that the Clemson defense is not good. It is very good, one of the best in the nation. The reason Alabama football fans should feel good about Monday night is the November, Crimson Tide game against Mississippi State.

Mississippi State has a better defense than Clemson. That is not a typo or a moment of insanity. Check the NCAA Stats. Clemson and Mississippi State take turns being either No. 1 or No. 2 in the FBS for Total Defense and Scoring Defense. Dive deeper into those stats and see the Bulldogs are also much better than Clemson in Passing Efficiency Defense.

ACC Football Rx: New Assistant Coaches at GT, UL and UM - 1/4/19 (RX; HM)

From RamblinWreck: Four more staffers join Georgia Tech football

Three assistant coaches and the program’s first-ever director of applied sports science were added to Georgia Tech football’s staff on Thursday, head coach Geoff Collins announced. The new staffers include defensive ends/outside linebackers coach Larry Knight, defensive line coach Jim Panagos, tight ends coach/offensive special teams coordinator Chris Wiesehan and director of applied sports science Ryan Horton.

Additionally, Knight, an Augusta, Ga. native, will serve as Georgia Tech’s defensive recruiting coordinator while previously announced running backs coach Tashard Choice, a Jonesboro, Ga. native, will also be the Yellow Jackets’ offensive recruiting coordinator.

Knight, Panagos, Wiesehan and Horton all come to The Flats from Temple, where they were members of Collins’ staff for the past two seasons (2017-18).

ACC Football Rx: Should Notre Dame have been in the Playoffs? (RX; HM)

Famous Big Ten blogger "Frank the Tank" chimes in on the Notre Dame playoff question...

RE: Notre Dame Should not have been in the CFP's (or should they?)

Frank the Tank:

The 20/20 hindsight that we have in college football is sort of ridiculous and it’s a symptom of, IMHO, the flawed and exclusionary playoff system. The fact that Notre Dame lost badly doesn’t mean that they didn’t deserve to be in the playoff any more than the fact that the 2001 Mariners, 2007 Patriots and 2015-16 Warriors didn’t deserve to be in their respective sports’ playoffs because they happened to lose in the postseason. I point out those 3 teams that fell short because they happen to all have the best regular seasons in the histories of MLB, the NFL and the NBA, respectively.

An undefeated team with Notre Dame’s schedule absolutely deserves to be in the postseason in the current format. The fact that they lost is irrelevant to that analysis because good-to-great teams have to lose in any playoff format.

That being said, the issue is that college football’s playoff format is an inherently exclusionary system, so we’re often trying to parse the #3/#4 teams with the #5/#6 teams, and that means a bad loss in the semifinal round has a disproportionate impact on how we perceive what "should have" happened. There also aren’t auto-bids in the playoff system, which means that everything is up to subjective perception.

ND deserved to be in the 4-team playoff based on any reasonable criteria. The problem is that the playoff system really ought to be at 8-teams with P5 autobids to really capture the entire field of teams that could reasonably be “deserving” of being in the playoffs. Too many old school fans are so worried about letting an “undeserving” team into the 8-team playoff, but I’m MUCH more bothered that deserving teams continually get shut out of the 4-team playoff.

ACC Football Rx: Weekend Links, news and rumors - 1/5/19 (RX; HM)

From ESPN: Former longtime Virginia coach George Welsh dies at 85

by Mark Schlabach

Former Virginia football coach George Welsh, who retired as the ACC's winningest coach and was the league's first coach to win 100 games, died on Wednesday, according to a release by the school. He was 85.

Welsh took over a downtrodden Virginia program in 1982. The Cavaliers had only two winning seasons in the 29 years before he was hired.

But after going 2-9 in his first season, the Cavaliers went 6-5 in his second and won the school's first bowl game in his third -- a 27-24 victory over Purdue in the 1984 Peach Bowl.

From 1987 to 1999, Welsh's teams won at least seven games every season and played in 10 bowl games...

In 1989, Welsh guided Virginia to a 10-3 record and a share of its first ACC championship -- 35 years after it had joined the league.

The next season, led by quarterback Shawn Moore, tailback Terry Kirby and receiver Herman Moore, the Cavaliers were ranked No. 1 in the country for three weeks before falling to eventual co-national champion Georgia Tech 41-38. The Cavaliers finished 8-4.

ACC Football Rx: Rx: A Better CFP Selection Process (RX; HM)

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is questioning how the CFP committee selects its four playoff teams. In particular, he doesn't think the Big Ten champion is getting a fair shake. FWIW, I think he may have a point... but I'd like to make a very simple proposal on how to resolve this whole issue.

Of course if Delany wants to make this a conference champs-only playoff (i.e. the top 4 champions) I'm fine with that because it means Notre Dame is all-in for ACC football the next day. On the other hand, if he pushes for 8 teams, he can expect to see the Rose Bowl contract fall to something more in line with the Orange Bowl payout...

One simple formula could solve all of the Big Ten's problems with the CFP Selection Committee by simply counting wins and losses, with the following weighting system: 2 points for a win over a P5 or ND, 1 point for a win over a G5 or other FBS indy, and zero points for a win over an FCS... then subtract for losses: minus 1 point for a loss to any FBS team, minus 2 points for any loss to an FCS team.

Take the 4 teams with the most total points (try it - it gives almost the same results as what we have, but it would have put Ohio State ahead of Alabama in 2017).

Two Contenders for 4th playoff spot in 2017 were...

ACC Football Rx: OT: Lyrics - Eye of the Tiger (RX; HM)

In honor of the Clemson Tigers football team...

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

Risin' up,
back on the street
Did my time,

Went the distance,
now I'm back on my feet
Just a man
and his will to survive

So many times,
it happens too fast
You trade your passion

Bear Creek Bar & Grill aims to bring ADK feel to Brewerton (PS; Weaver)

For most days during the past few weeks, Matthew Scott and Daniel Nye have been in the kitchen at Bear Creek Bar & Grill before 8 a.m.

Each day, they hand-mix and form dozens of half-pound burgers. They hand cut fries and prep food for entrees, which range from a prime rib sandwich to cast iron chicken.

“It’s a long prep, each day,” Scott said.

They open the doors at 3 p.m. And so far, the people have come to Bear Creek at 9461 Brewerton Road in Brewerton.

The partners opened the bar and restaurant – their first – in October 2018. They picked the name, in part, because the building came with a few large and heavy carved bears. They wanted to create a space that paid homage to the Adirondacks and felt like a lodge in the woods.

They picked the area, they said, because there were few places doing what they wanted to do: run a bar that served food prepared with a little more time and attention. Thus, the emphasis on hand-made comfort foods, made-to-order. “We don’t have a microwave,” Nye said during a tour of the kitchen.

Good article on Terrell Bennett. The kid has a great attitude. I hope he experiences success on the field; I am sure he will be successful in life after football. Another player to follow and root for over the next few years.
