Welcome to National Bagel Day!

National Bagel Day is devoted to bagels, and bakeries and stores often offer discounted or free bagels on the day. It is unknown exactly how bagels got their start. One story says they were invented in Krakow, Poland, where they appeared in the city's community regulations in 1610. This account says they were given as gifts to women in childbirth. Another story says a Viennese baker created bagels to commemorate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. This account says the bread was formed into the shape of a "buegel"—or stirrup—because the liberated Austrians had clung to the king's stirrups as he had ridden past.

Bagels became a part of the Polish diet, and then part of the Slavic diet in general. By the mid-nineteenth century, they could be found in London, and they were first mentioned in English print, in 1892, as "beuglich." They likely found their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland, and were eaten by them especially during Sunday breakfasts. They were first mentioned in American print as "bagels" in 1916. The production and sale of bagels became significant in New York City.

Syracuse Offers Three Star D-Lineman Michael Lockhart – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

Syracuse is now the latest team to offer surging three-star defensive linemen Michael Lockhart from the 2020 class.

Lockhart, who is listed at defensive end, but likely has the ability to move inside at 6-5, 250, hails from Birmingham, Alabama. He currently has several offers, including Colorado, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Nebraska and Virginia.

Lockhart originally committed to UAB in mid-October of 2018, but rose up the rankings in December and later de-committed before getting a majority of high-profile offers.

The Orange threw their hats in the ring on Sunday, the same day as Mississippi State.

Syracuse Football: 5 takeaways from successful 2018 season (saturdayblitz.com; Muldowney)

Syracuse football shocked the ACC with a successful 2018 season under head coach Dino Babers. What did we learn from the Orange this year?

Just three seasons into his Syracuse football tenure, Dino Babers pulled off the improbable — he turned the Orange into a respectable football program.

Two 4-8 seasons in his first two years made it seem like his seat was warming up, but Babers built a base for a 10-win season to be possible in 2018. Syracuse was a serious ACC contender and finished the year with a 10-3 record and Camping World Bowl win over a Will Grier-less West Virginia.

Syracuse is heading into the offseason with plenty of momentum and will have high expectations for the 2019 campaign.

What did we learn from the Orange’s successful 2018 season?

5. Defense was the difference in 2018
Syracuse was ‘there’ in 2018 near the top of the ACC standings, but the Orange were a top-tier defense away from truly being Clemson’s biggest threat.

Beating Syracuse set up Clemson’s special season (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

Justin Falcinelli knew the 2018 Clemson football team was truly special following their win over Syracuse in Week 5 of the season.

“Once we got through Syracuse, I knew we could do it,” the All-ACC center said. “We were starting to play, and we were starting to come together.”

That was a chaotic week for the Tigers. Head coach Dabo Swinney announced that previous Monday he was going to start freshman Trevor Lawrence over senior Kelly Bryant. That same day, when the rest of the team went to practice, Bryant cleaned out his locker and sent Swinney a “Dear John” like text message and said he was transferring.

In the game, the Tigers fell behind 13-7 in the second quarter and while diving for the sticks on a third-down play along the Syracuse sideline, Lawrence was knocked out of the game. In came Chase Brice, who entered the week as the third string quarterback.

With little playing experience, Brice engineered a fourth-quarter come back for the ages as Clemson rallied from 10-points down for a 27-23 victory. On the game-winning drive, Brice found Tee Higgins for a 20-yard gain on a fourth-and-six play near midfield.

On the next play, he kept the ball for a 17-yard run that moved the football inside the 15. Two plays later Travis Etienne scored the winning touchdown with 41 seconds to play.

“It was a tough week and really with all the adversity we had with the quarterback change, then Trevor getting injured and being down and all of that,” Falcinelli said. “I knew then that if we could get through all of that and come back and win, then there is still a way we can be pretty great.”

After the Syracuse game, the Tigers were better than great. They were unbelievable. Clemson beat its next 10 opponents by an average margin of 36.1 points, including a 28-point victory over Alabama in the national championship game.

SYRACUSE (10-3): EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS

Dino Babers inherited a four-win team three years ago. Flash to the present and the Orange finished with 10 wins for only the seventh time in program history. How good was this run? Syracuse finished the season 15th in the AP Poll. The Orange hadn’t cracked the AP Poll since the 2001 season.

2019 Outlook: 247Sports did not rank Syracuse in its too-early Top 25, but the Orange have an argument returning 13 starters. The biggest question is how Syracuse will replace starting quarterback Eric Dungey, the team's starter for three-and-a-half years. Former four-star passer Tommy Devito is next up under center. The New Jersey native is talented, but his 50.6 completion percentage last season in 87 passes raises some questions – Devito did look great against Florida State. Watch out for Oklahoma running back transfer Abdul Adams. He could be a star in Babers’ offense.

Lovin’ it: Trump fetes champion Clemson football team with fast food (PS; AP)

The scent of burgers, fries and victory wafted through the stately White House on Monday as President Donald Trump saluted college football’s Clemson Tigers for winning the national championship.

Trump, a fast food lover, said he even paid for their meal himself because of the partial government shutdown. He did not disclose the tab.

"We ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza," Trump said after returning to the White House from a trip to New Orleans. "We have some very large people that like eating, so I think we're going to have a little fun."

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said much of the staff in the White House residence has been furloughed because of the shutdown, "so the president is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone's favorite fast foods."

An impressive — and highly unusual — White House smorgasbord greeted the players. Silver trays held stacks of wrapped burgers from Wendy's. Also on offer were boxed burgers from McDonald's, including Big Macs.

White House cups bearing the presidential seal held the fries.

2019 ACC early conference primer: Biggest games, Heisman hopefuls and one big prediction (sportsingnews.com; Bender)

The Atlantic Coast Conference is coming off a season in which Clemson won its second national championship in three seasons.

The Tigers now have won four straight conference championships in the College Football Playoff era, and the rest of the conference is playing catch-up. The conference finished 6-5 in bowl games and welcomes four new coaches for 2019.

With that in mind, here is a way-too-early-primer for next season.

Top ACC storyline
Clemson's drive for five straight ACC championships will be the dominant headline, but what will the two Florida blue-bloods do about it? Florida State is coming off a disastrous 5-7 season in Willie Taggart's first year, and another year of missing a bowl game won't cut it in Tallahassee. The Seminoles lost to the Tigers 59-10 last year. Meanwhile, Mark Richt's sudden retirement leaves Manny Diaz in charge of a program that finished 7-6 a year after losing 38-3 to Clemson in the ACC championship game. What can these two schools do to close that gap?

Impact freshman
Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina. Mack Brown made his first bold recruiting play by landing the four-star quarterback from Monroe, N.C., and he should have the opportunity to compete for the starting job in new offensive coordinator Phil Longo's QB-friendly offense.

New ACC coaches
Mack Brown, North Carolina. Brown, 67, is back in the FBS and has assembled an impressive coaching staff with the Tar Heels. Don't be surprised if those new tricks learned from his time in the ESPN booth pay off immediately for UNC.

Manny Diaz, Miami. Diaz briefly took the Temple job, but coming back to Miami made sense after the Richt retirement. Diaz has put his signature on the Hurricanes' defense. Now, it's time to develop a game-changing quarterback.

ACC team to watch
Syracuse. The Orange have emerged as the biggest challenger for Clemson the last two seasons, and redshirt-sophomore Tommy DeVito's time as the starter has arrived. If the Orange win a nonconference game at Maryland on Sept. 7 they should be undefeated heading into ACC play.

Maryland Football Schedule: 2019 Analysis (CFN; Fiutak)

2019 Maryland Terrapins Football Schedule Analysis
– The Mike Locksley era kicks off with a layup against Howard to get everything in place, and it all has to come together quickly with Syracuse coming up next. The trip to Temple to follow isn’t going to be a breeze, but if the Terps are going to be in for a good season, they have to blow through the non-conference slate going at least 2-1, with 3-0 an easy ask.

– The start of the Big Ten season isn’t all that bad, but the Terps aren’t at home enough to go on a big run. There’s a week off before a Friday night home game against Penn State, and then comes the run of three road games in four weeks, traveling to Rutgers, Purdue and Minnesota, and with Indiana in the midst of it all. They need to get hot, because …

– November is brutal. After closing out October at Minnesota, Maryland hosts Michigan, goes to Ohio State, and gets a week off before dealing with Nebraska and a trip to Michigan State.

Wide receiver Jeff Thomas to enroll at Illinois after flirtation with Miami, report says (miamiherald.,com; Wilson)

Jeff Thomas will be joining the Illinois Fighting Illini after all.

After a few days of discussion about a potential return to the Miami Hurricanes, Thomas on Monday told The News-Gazette in Champaign, Illinois, he is still set to join the Fighting Illini for the 2019 season. The wide receiver, who was kicked off the Miami team before the regular-season finale in 2018, said he could begin classes Tuesday in Champaign.

“I’m on my way now,” said Thomas, a native of East St. Louis, Illinois. “I’m really excited to get started at Illinois.”

Thomas arrived in Coral Gables as a top-50 national recruit, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings, and became an immediate contributor. As a freshman in 2017, Thomas played in 13 games, logging 17 catches for 374 yards and two touchdowns. He followed it up with another strong sophomore campaign in 2018 — in 11 games, Thomas caught 35 passes for 563 yards and three touchdowns, plus a 19-yard run — but the Hurricanes booted him from the program before the regular-season finale against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Photos Of Clemson Football’s White House Dinner Are Going Viral (thespun.com; Hladik)

Clemson football is at the White House tonight. President Trump is hosting the team in celebration of its national championship victory last week.

Over the weekend, Trump revealed what he planned on serving the victorious Tigers for their meal tonight: fast food.

“I think we’re going to serve McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King, with some pizza. I would think that’s their favorite food,” Trump told reporters.

Looking at the photos from the event, he delivered on that statement.

Brice leads season-saving drive
Lawrence was injured in the first half of his first start against Syracuse, and redshirt freshman Chase Brice was called upon to save the day. With a heavy assist from Travis Etienne, Brice led Clemson on a 13-play, 94-yard touchdown drive to give the Tigers a 27-23 lead with less than a minute remaining in the game as Clemson went on to earn the crucial victory. The biggest play of the game came when Brice found Tee Higgins for a 20-yard gain with Clemson facing a fourth-and-six on its own 48.

Clemson’s leading tackler passing on NFL draft, returning to school (islandpacket.com; Connolly)

Clemson is losing plenty of talent off of its 2018 defense, but its leading tackler is returning to school.

Tigers nickel/sam linebacker Isaiah Simmons announced Monday night on social media that he is returning to school for his redshirt junior season.

Simmons led the Tigers with 89 tackles in 2018. The Kansas native averaged 9.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Simmons also led the Tigers with six pass breakups and had an interception.

Muse was fourth on Clemson’s team in tackles with 61 in 2018, and he had 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and two interceptions.

With all of the NFL draft decisions due Monday night, it is now official that Clemson will lose seven starters off of its 2018 defense in Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Austin Bryant, Tre Lamar, Kendall Joseph and Trayvon Mullen.

Still, Brent Venables should have plenty of talent to work with in 2019 as the Tigers look to win back-to-back national titles.

Syracuse Football: Chance Amie transferring clears way for Tommy DeVito (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team is experiencing some turbulence. Quarterback Chance Amie is transferring, leaving the door wide open for Tommy Devito.

The hits keep coming for the Syracuse football team. After losing wide receiver Devin C. Butler to the transfer portal earlier this week, they’re now losing a much larger piece to the puzzle.

Quarterback Chance Amie announced his decision to leave the program late Saturday night on Twitter:

Drop the mic, little ole Clemson houses the best college football team ever (clemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

I loved Clemson growing up.

I lived it. I breathed it. I was all about it.

I loved everything about Clemson. My stepfather, a 1949 graduate of old Clemson College, passed down his passion for this great university when I was just a little boy and he taught me everything I needed to know about it. Once you are bitten by the Clemson bug, there is really no cure. It stays with you the rest of your life.

There is just something about this little ole place that no one can truly explain, but once you experience it, you understand how special it is.

Clemson is not just a university, but it is a town. It’s a small town. It is a community. The city has just barely under 14,000 residence. That is it.

The undergrad enrollment at Clemson is just under 18,000. That is it.

A town as small as Clemson and a school as small as Clemson isn’t supposed to beat the big boys. It isn’t supposed to win championships. It is supposed to be the best college football program in the country.

One of the things I loved about Clemson growing up was how no one really ever gave Clemson a chance. I grew up in the late 1970s and ‘80s. Until Dabo Swinney came around, it was the best era in Clemson football history.

NC State Football adds USC transfer linebacker Levi Jones - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Deep in the heart of basketball season, NC State football has landed a significant roster addition: former USC linebacker Levi Jones.

Pack Pride
@PackPride
NC State has officially added USC transfer LB Levi Jones to the roster. Jones was @247Sports' No. 6 OLB in the country in the 2017 class.

: Former 4-star prospect and USC LB Jones transfers to NC State

A former 4-star recruit — Jones was the No. 6 outside linebacker in the 2017 class, per 247 Sports — the 6-foot-3 backer recorded 30 tackles across two seasons for the Trojans.

Last November, though, Jones was kicked off the USC roster. It’s unclear what his eligibility will be for next season in Raleigh; Jones may have to redshirt. He’s the second Southern Cal transfer NC State has landed recently — joining tight end Cary Angeline.

‘Potentially major winter storm’ could hit Upstate NY this weekend (PS; Coin)

A major winter storm that hammered the Midwest and mid-Atlantic over the weekend missed Upstate New York, but another one looms for next weekend.

The National Weather Service office in Binghamton said a “potentially major winter storm" is shaping up for Saturday and Sunday, and has already alerted the media and emergency managers.

“Many of our longer-range models are pointing toward a snowstorm,” said Dave Nicosia, the warning coordinating meteorologist in Binghamton. “Since it is five to six days out, there is considerably uncertainty.”

The federal Climate Prediction Center said computer forecast models “have keyed in on the potential for a strong low pressure system" for the eastern” U.S. this weekend.

“Some guidance suggests that this storm could lead to significant snowfall, but it is still too far out to predict exact snowfall amounts or the location of the rain/snow line,” said the center, which has posted a slight risk of heavy precipitation for the Northeast.
