Welcome to Come in From the Cold Day!

There are so many things to do in the cold, snowy weather… skiing, sledding, skating, building snowmen… but one of the best things is coming in from the cold to a nice warm fire and maybe a cup of hot cocoa.

No matter how warm you dress yourself, no matter how many layers of clothing you put on the cold always seems to find a way in. You can even get worse sun burns from the snow than you can in the middle of summer on the beach.

Orange Watch: Syracuse should schedule Miami, Virginia Tech in non-conference play - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: One of the nuggets we missed with last week’s announcement of the composite 2019 ACC football schedule is that Wake Forest, Syracuse’s current Atlantic Division-mate and regular season finale opponent in the Dome Nov. 30, is going to host Coastal member North Carolina (originally announced in Jan. 2015) in a NON-LEAGUE matchup Sept. 12, creating the first time that Wake has played and hosted the other three “Big Four” conference schools located approximately 60-90 minutes from its campus (Duke and N.C. State) in the same season since 1921.

It got us thinking when taking a look at the Orange’s future schedules. If the ACC won’t change its conference alignment stance but will allow conference teams to compete against each other in games that don’t count in the league standings, then SU should follow Wake Forest’s lead and schedule the Hurricanes and Hokies, teams Orange Nation wants to see play in the Dome, instead of, let’s say, a Big Ten school such as Purdue in the 2022 season that doesn’t carry the same cache.

The only two things we remember about Syracuse and Purdue matching up in football is Paul Pasqualoni unfairly decided to start overmatched true freshman Joe Fields at quarterback against the Boilermakers in the 2004 season opener in West Lafayette, Ind., and the final score was 51-0 in favor of the home team, the beginning of the end of the 14 year Coach P run.

An inter-sectional Big Ten game simply does not match the same kind of hype and superlatives we can all relate to when compared to the Miami and Virginia Tech meetings over the last 30 years. As we know, going into its seventh ACC football season this Sept., SU has only played Miami and Virginia Tech once apiece, making it hard to relate that the teams actually compete for the same title trophy awarded in Charlotte the first Saturday of each December, and denies the Orange regularly scheduled trips to the fertile south Florida recruiting territory.

As part of the original ACC crossover rotation, SU will play at Virginia Tech in 2021, and Miami finally makes its ACC Dome debut in 2024, the current final season of the original 12 year home and away sequence between the Atlantic and Coastal division teams.

Breaking down the ACC recruiting classes (espn; VanHaaren; insider article)

The ACC is top-heavy in terms of recruiting in the 2019 cycle. Clemson is the only team ranked in the top 10 of the class rankings, with 12 of the conference's 34 ESPN 300 commitments. Compare that to the SEC, which has 116 ESPN 300 commitments, 53 for the Big Ten and the 38 in the Pac-12.

Outside of Clemson, Florida State, NC State and Virginia Tech are the only other teams in the conference ranked in the top 30 of the class rankings.

It has been an up-and-down recruiting cycle for some of the ACC teams, including Miami, which is sitting at No. 34 overall in an unusual year. Despite those numbers, each team has some good pieces to help build their respective rosters and push their teams forward.

Here is a look at how the ACC fared in recruiting this cycle.

1. Clemson

Triple option no longer part of Clemson's preparation for Georgia Tech (independentmail.com; Robinson)

Perhaps no one was more relieved than Clemson when Georgia Tech announced its replacement for coach Paul Johnson.

For the past 11 seasons, Johnson mystified defenses in the Atlantic Coast Conference with his flexbone triple-option offense. Johnson’s scheme was effective because he was a brilliant playcaller, but it also confounded defenses because it was an anomaly.

Georgia Tech was the only team from a Power Five conference that ran the triple option. Teams did not face an offense like that often during the season, so it always disrupted the flow and momentum of defensive preparation.

Clemson and Georgia Tech are in different ACC divisions, but the league preserved their rivalry and made them crossover scheduling partners. The Tigers face the Yellow Jackets each season.

The league will showcase the rivalry in the first football telecast of the ACC Network when Clemson hosts Georgia Tech in the 2019 season opener on Aug. 29. But the Tigers will not face the triple option.

Johnson stepped down after the 2018 season. Georgia Tech replaced him with Geoff Collins, who coached the previous two seasons at Temple. Collins will inject new energy into the Georgia Tech program, and he will install a new offense. Under Collins, Georgia Tech will run a pro-style scheme similar to many other ACC teams Clemson will face.

Virginia Tech Football: 3 Reasons for Optimism About the Hokies in 2019 (athlonsports.com; Kinne)

Oftentimes, year three in a coach’s tenure is when a team makes an ascension. They have recruited enough of the right players for the system and those that are left from the previous regime have had to buy in by this time.

But the only hard and fast rule when it comes to developing a football program is that there are no hard and fast rules. At Virginia Tech this past fall, it was a struggle. Justin Fuente’s third group of Hokies suffered unexpected personnel losses both before and during the season, and coupled with those that they knew would move on following the 2017 season, Tech regressed to 6-7 this fall.

Despite this year’s problems, there are reasons for hope going forward. Here are three of them with an eye towards Virginia Tech's 2019 outlook.

1. The passing game

Ryan Willis will return, though he will have competition from a hopefully healthy Josh Jackson. Whoever wins the starting job will have plenty of capable receivers to target. The top five pass catchers will be back, including top target Damon Hazelton and Tre Turner, the exciting rising sophomore that had a big close to the 2018 campaign. An offensive line that started three freshmen in the Military Bowl should make strides and be able to give the quarterback enough time to make things really click. Finding a reliable running back to ease the burden on the passing game will be a high priority this spring.

Onondaga County exec: No more outsourcing economic development strategy (PS; Knauss)

Just 10 weeks into the job, new Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon is putting his imprint on county government. And no department has been shaken up more than economic development.

In what he describes as a sharp departure from the past, McMahon promises to take a more active, aggressive approach to boosting local business development and job creation.

Economic development will no longer be "outsourced'' to state agencies or nonprofit business associations, McMahon said.

"When you outsource economic development to a nonprofit or the state, it's tough to control your own future,'' McMahon said. "We're not going to outsource that to anybody. We're going to go do the things that economic development agencies do.''

That means county officials will more actively seek out developments to support, rather than wait for ideas from other agencies, he said. McMahon's administration will inventory building sites and get them ready for development, go after state aid to spruce up the "main streets'' of local towns and villages, and fix leaky sewers that can impede new industry.

The county should be the "quarterback'' of regional economic development efforts, he said.

McMahon has already hired a new deputy director of economic development, who will focus on site development. Within a couple weeks, McMahon will hire a new director as well.

Ridiculous - one of the biggest downsides of these superconferences.

Scheduling reform is needed - YESTERDAY! (specifically, eliminate divisions!)

C'mon, commish... Git'er'done!
