Welcome to Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day!

Bubble Wrap is a generic trademark—a name that has become synonymous with similar products—for a transparent plastic material with air-filled bubbles used for packing fragile products when they are delivered or transported. Bubble Wrap is also often popped for entertainment and stress relieving purposes. Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day was started by "Spirit 95," a radio station in Bloomington, Indiana. The day was first held in 2001.

In 1957, Engineers Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding worked in a garage to create a three dimensional plastic wallpaper, by sealing two shower curtains together. They were not successful in selling their wallpaper, so they began marketing it as greenhouse insulation. In 1960 they started the Sealed Air Corporation. The following year they realized their product could be used as a cushioning and packaging material. It was originally used to package IBM 1401 computers for shipment. Now it is used for food packaging more than for anything else. Bubbles are generally different sizes, usually 1/4 inch in diameter to 1 inch in diameter. Bubble Wrap is often made from polyethylene film.

2019 QB Recruit David Summers Flips His Commitment (thespun, com; Holleran)

One of the top quarterback recruits in the 2019 class has flipped his commitment following a visit.

David Summers, a pro-style quarterback recruit out of Connecticut, has flipped his commitment from Maryland to Syracuse.

The three-star quarterback recruit is ranked the No. 36 pro-style QB in the class by 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

Syracuse has their quarterback for the 2019 class. Three star Trumbull (CT) St. Joseph quarterback David Summers committed to the Orange during an official visit. Summers had previously been committed to Maryland, but chose not to sign with the Terps during the early signing period. The 6-foot-3 quarterback was offered by his primary recruiter, Syracuse defensive coordinator Brian Ward last Wednesday. Summer is ranked the 36th best prostyle quarterback in the 2019 class by the 247 Sports Composite. He is the ninth best player in Connecticut overall.

3-star QB David Summers flips from Maryland football to Syracuse (testudotimes.com; Kendziora & Fitzgerald)

On a weekend in which Maryland football landed three new commitments in the 2019 class, the Terps also lost their lone quarterback commit, as three-star prospect David Summers flipped to Syracuse.

The decision comes after Summers officially visited the Orange this weekend, and was first reported by GameTimeCT on Sunday.

Summers pledged to the Terps in May, and remained committed despite watching DJ Durkin get fired and Matt Canada’s position at Maryland up in the air. Canada was Summers’ primary recruiter when he committed to Maryland. The Trumbull, Connecticut, native is the No. 9 player in the state and the No. 36 pro-style quarterback in the country, according to the 247 Sports Composite.

If Maryland doesn’t add a quarterback to its class in the next week and a half, it will be the first time since 2011 that the Terps have not signed at least one signal caller. But it’ll likely be a high priority for Mike Locksley’s staff. Tyrrell Pigrome looks to be the starter heading into next season, with Tyler DeSue and Max Bortenschlager competing for backup reps and Kasim Hill recovering from his second torn ACL.

Syracuse Expanding Recruiting Pipelines to the Carolinas (247sports.com; McAllister)

Since Dino Babers arrival in Central New York to coach the Syracuse Orange, the regions or states within the country in which Babers' staff has targeted have been familiar ones. They have targeted states/areas that have been traditional pipelines mixed with ones in which the staff has established relationships. The Northeast, Florida and the Midwest were among the most heavily targeted.

Two states in particular which bolster a solid amount of division one talent each cycle, North and South Carolina, were not consistent areas that Syracuse recruited very heavily. In the 2017 recruiting cycle, the first full cycle of Dino Babers' staff, only 10 total prospects received Syracuse offers from the two states. That has all changed over the in the 2019 cycle and looking ahead to the 2020 class.

Michigan Senior OT Makes Transfer Decision (thespun.com; Machlin)

The NCAA’s flurry of transfer moves has landed another player from a top college football program. This time, it’s Michigan offensive lineman Nolan Ulizio.

On Sunday, Ulizio took to Twitter to announce that he would be spending his final year of college eligibility at Pitt.

Ulizio was a three-star prospect in Michigan’s Class of 2015.

247Sports had him rated as a top-1300 prospect, the No. 141 offensive tackle in the country, and the No. 61 prospect from the state of Ohio.

NC State football to add former nemesis as grad transfer (newsobsderver.com; Giglio)

Tabari Hines has had big games against N.C. State.

The former Wake Forest receiver will now have a chance to have big games for N.C. State.

The speedy slot receiver from Florence, S.C. has committed to transfer to the Wolfpack from Oregon. As a graduate transfer, he will be eligible to help the revamped N.C. State offense in the 2019 season.

Hines (5-10, 175 pounds) was instrumental in Wake Forest’s 30-24 win over N.C. State in 2017. He had eight catches for 139 yards and three touchdowns, including what turned out to be the game-winner.

Louisville football flips offensive line recruit from Georgia Tech )courier-journal.com; Lourim)

Short on offensive linemen when they took over the Louisville football program, Scott Satterfield and his staff went back to that well Sunday, picking up a commitment from three-star offensive tackle Joshua Black.

Black, from Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, is the No. 144 offensive tackle in 247sports.com's composite rankings.

He committed to Georgia Tech last summer and remained committed publicly until Sunday. But he was caught in a coaching change after former head coach Paul Johnson and former assistant coach Jerome Riase recruited him. Johnson retired in late November, and Georgia Tech replaced him with Geoff Collins on Dec. 7.

Black wrote on Twitter on Sunday afternoon that he had received no communications from Collins and his staff since his last campus visit, indicating Georgia Tech didn't plan to make him part of its 2019 class.

After visiting Louisville this weekend, Black committed to the Cardinals in a subsequent Twitter post.

He becomes the third offensive lineman in this class, joining Zach Williamson — who signed last month — and Jackson Gregory, who committed earlier Sunday.

Louisville's 2019 class now has nine players in it, with national signing day 10 days away.

2018 sets the standard at Clemson, for college football (clemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

The 2018 Clemson football team is the best team in the history of college football. There is no argument there.

The Tigers were the first team since the invention of the forward pass to go 15-0 in a season. But they are not the best team because they went 15-0. They’re the best team because of how dominant they were in doing it.

Clemson won 13 of its 15 games by 20 or more points. The Tigers won their 15 games by an average margin of 31.1 points per game, the best in school history. They became the first school in ACC history to beat two conference foes by 60 or more points in the same year.

ACC Football Rx: Links, news and rumors - 1/25/19 (RX; HM)

Regarding the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game this year featuring Duke vs. Alabama, Guest author MSTiger sent me an email which stated, in part:

Some people ask why Duke would play Alabama in this game. This is why...

Report: Clemson, Georgia guaranteed $5 million for kickoff game

Per the AJC, the contract calls for a guaranteed payment of the higher amount between $5 million or 80 percent of the ticket revenue. The schools are responsible for selling 28,500 seats each and could receive more tickets beyond that amount.

Teams are set to also receive complimentary hotel rooms, passes for parking, suites and the bench and tickets to the College Football Hall of Fame, per the report.

The article also states that "the normal capacity for football games in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is 71,000 and next week's Super Bowl will host 75,324." Keep that in mind.

Here's the part that applies to Duke:

Per the report, Atlanta kickoff game opponents have received $5.2 million per school.

I think there are a lot of folks who'd play Alabama for that kind of money

ACC Football Rx: Five B1G teams w/o P5 OOCs in 2019 (RX; HM)

From FBSchedules: Why the Big Ten Won't Woo the CFB Playoff Committee in 2019

As long as there are five Power leagues vs. only four slots in the CFB Playoff bracket, comparative schedule strength is a crucial conversation. Throw an undefeated Notre Dame into the equation and the number of available spots is reduced to three.

For this coming season, the Big Ten is at a disadvantage before the debate even begins.

Why? Simply put, too many Big Ten teams are dodging the other power five conferences! Here's a summary of Big Ten non-conference games, totalled by P5, G5 and FCS opponents:

BIG TEN TEAM P5 G5 FCS

ILLINOIS 0 3 0
INDIANA 0 2 1

MARYLAND 1 1 1
MICHIGAN 1 2 0
MICHIGAN STATE 1 2 0

ACC Football Rx: ACC Sports Factoids - 1/28/19 (RX; HM)

Not sure if ACC sports are good enough to warrant having its own cable channel? Consider these factoids...

• The ACC has won the most national titles of any other conference (six) in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball since 2015. The next closest is the SEC with four. The ACC is the only conference to win each of the four titles over that stretch.

• In addition, the ACC's six major national titles have come from five different programs – Clemson football (2016, 2018), Notre Dame women’s basketball (2018), North Carolina men’s basketball (2017), Duke men’s basketball (2016), Virginia baseball (2015).

• The ACC has won more football national titles than any other conference since 2013 (three of the last six) and more men’s basketball national championships than any other league since 2015 (two of the last four).

• In the fall standings of the Learfield Directors’ Cup, the ACC leads all conferences with four teams in the top 10, and eight teams in the top 20. Wake Forest leads the way at No. 6, followed by No. 7 Duke, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 NC State, No. 14 Virginia, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 17 Florida State and No. 19 Syracuse.

Men’s Basketball

• Six ACC teams are ranked among the Top 25 of the latest AP poll, including No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Virginia, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 21 NC State and No. 23 Louisville, which makes its initial appearance in the 2018-19 AP Top 25 under first-year head coach Chris Mack.

• Louisville is the ninth ACC team to be ranked in the AP poll this season, tying a league record set numerous times previously.

ACC Football Rx: Hokie Transfer Exodus on Twitter (RX; HM)

Really, what else would you expect the man to say? Very professional, even if this is all very disappointing.

Here's what the Miami Hurricanes had to say...

Forget UVA - Miami is the Hokies' TRUE RIVAL!

ACC Football Rx: Goodbye, Cardinal Stadium! (RX; HM)

Based on "Demolition of Old Cardinal Stadium"...

Before there was Pappa John's Stadium (or whatever they're calling it these days), the Louisville Cardinals played football at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds... now the old stadium is nothing but a memory.

Built in 1956 as Fairgrounds Stadium, the 63 year old Cardinal Stadium originally served as home to University of Louisville football for 40 seasons. It has also served as a baseball stadium from time to time. Then, as the 20th Century drew to a close, the stadium lost its two primary tenants: UofL football moved to its new on campus facility for the 1998 season and the Louisville RiverBats moved to a new stadium in downtown Louisville in April 2000.

The stadium was declared unsafe for seated occupancy in 2013, but it continued to host outdoor concerts during the Kentucky State Fair for two more years, but eventually the right field bleachers were removed and sold for scrap metal in late 2014.

...
__________

Neat little tidbit of trivia. Old Cardinal Stadium (fka Fairgrounds Stadium) hosted the 1958 Bluegrass Bowl between Florida State and Oklahoma State. It was only FSU's 4th bowl appearance; the Noles lost 6-15.

Heavy snow this week for Upstate NY; alerts issued (PS; Coin)

Heavy snow is headed for Upstate New York Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Western winds will generate big snowfalls off Lake Erie and especially Lake Ontario.

“Snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet possible Wednesday through Friday morning, with the greatest amounts on the Tug Hill Plateau,” the weather service said.

Snowfall totals could be 10 inches to a foot in Syracuse and Utica, and Binghamton could get 9 inches. Buffalo, hit by 17 inches of snow on Friday alone, could get another foot or so.
