Welcome to National Croissant Day!

The history of croissants is steeped in legend. One legend says that croissants were first made in Buda, the ancient capital of Hungary that is now the western part of Budapest, to celebrate the victory of the Franks over the Umayyads at the Battle of Tours—which happened back in the eighth century. The shape was said to represent the crescent moon of Islam.

A second legend says that croissants were made to celebrate the victory of Christian forces over the Ottoman Empire in 1683. The Ottomans had laid siege to Vienna, Austria, and the legend says that when the Ottomans were unsuccessful in entering the city, they attempted to dig tunnels underneath it. Apparently, a baker or bakers, who worked in underground storerooms, heard sounds of digging and alerted the army. After the battle, they were given thanks, and they baked bread in the shape of a crescent moon, the Ottoman Empire's symbol. The story says that croissants then went on to become a popular breakfast food in Vienna. Some believe this moment marked the start of the kipferl, not the croissant, but the kipferl had long been in existence at this point. It is mentioned in a poem from 1227, as a treat that Viennese bakers brought to Duke Leopold.

Where Syracuse football's 2019 class stands a week before National Signing Day (PS; Bailey)

The next signing period during the Class of 2019 recruiting calendar begins with National Signing Day next Wednesday.

NSD has become less eventful since the implementation of the early signing period, but this year's iteration is still expected to be an important day for Syracuse football. Currently, SU is expected to receive binding agreements from its two verbal commitments in quarterback David Summers and defensive lineman Jason Munoz, both of whom joined the class after taking official visits last weekend.

The Orange already signed 17 prospects in December and is expected to take another handful of scholarship players in total before the fall.

Let's break down the two pledges, where Syracuse stands with other uncommitted targets, how this class stacks up nationally and the importance of a critical recruiting effort that will continue into the spring.

Syracuse Football Could Be Special In 2019. Mike Lindsley (ML) Sports Platter podcast (player.fm; radio; Lindsley)

ML says Syracuse is good enough to win the ACC if the QB has a great year.

ACC commissioner proud of success, upbeat about future with launch of TV network looming (orlandosentinel.com; Murschel)

John Swofford looks like a man with few problems. The Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner was in Orlando at the NCAA’s annual convention two weeks after Clemson’s resounding 44-16 win over top-ranked Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

It’s the league’s third title during the last six years, with the Tigers responsible for two of those wins (2016, 2018) and Florida State (2013) the other.

“I would take 50 percent of the national championships in any sport, on any day,” said Swofford, who is in his second decade in charge of the ACC.

The league hasn’t always enjoyed such success, going through a dry spell of 14 years between national championships from 1999 to 2013. Meanwhile down the road, the rival SEC won eight titles during the same window.

“The last six, seven years or so, the optics of ACC football has really changed and changed for the positive and for good reason,” Swofford said. “I think our schools have really responded to the challenge from a football standpoint. Obviously, Clemson at the top has been extraordinary, but I think our league is just better overall with much more depth. More bowl teams and everything continues to point upward.”

The ACC had 11 teams qualify for postseason bowls, with the conference tying a record with five wins in those games, not including Boston College’s game against Boise State getting canceled due to weather. The league also set a record by having at least 10 different football teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25 rankings, tying with the SEC.

ACC 2019 Pre-Spring Rankings, Depth Chart Projections, Biggest Issues (CFN; Fiutak)

These can and will change after spring ball and going into the season, but for now, as a starting point, welcome to your pre-everything early ranking of all the ACC teams.

ACC ATLANTIC

7. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The quarterback situation is terrific once Sam Hartman gets healthy again – Jamie Newman is a proven talent, too. The Demon Deacons need help on the offensive line blocking for leading rusher Cade Carney, and they have to find a new No. 1 receiver after losing top target Greg Dortch. That’s where former QB Kendall Hinton might fit in.

Losing three of the top six tacklers isn’t a plus, but getting Old Dominion’s Miles Fox for the line helps. The linebacking corps should be solid and the cornerbacks will be a plus.
...
...
3. Florida State Seminoles

The FSU bounceback needs to start with the defense. DE Brian Burns left early for the NFL, but the young linebacking corps from last year returns intact, and the secondary should be among the ACC’s best. In all, eight of the top ten tacklers return. And then there’s the offensive side …

The line has to be better, and it has to replace several veterans with just two returning starters. The skill guys are in place, with QB Deondre Francois back for his senior year, Cam Akers a big-time running back talent, and with four of the top five wide receivers back.

Final 2018 Record: 5-7 (3-5)
2018 ACC Atlantic Finish: T5
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 3
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Protection
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Secondary
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Offensive Line

2. Syracuse Orange

2018 might have been just the beginning. QB Eric Dungey is gone and Tommy DeVito has to prove he can handle the work, but the receiving corps is loaded – despite the loss to Jamal Custis – leading rusher Moe Neal is back, but the line needs a whole lot of work.

The top two tacklers are gone, but the next eight top tacklers are back. The secondary gets all of the parts back, but the linebacking corps needs work after losing Ryan Guthrie and Keilan Whitner.

Final 2018 Record: 10-3 (8-0)
2018 ACC Atlantic Finish: 2
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 12
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Protection
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Secondary
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Linebacker

1. Clemson Tigers

The defending national champs have some major reloading to do at some parts, but it’s nothing they haven’t dealt with before. The entire amazing defensive front four has to be replaced, but Clemson is a factory now for defensive linemen. The secondary is going to be terrific again, but eight of the top 12 tacklers are gone.

Miami Football Surge ’19 recruiting class is not “screwed” (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Wharton discussed the past year for Miami below. He mentions the losses off the 2018 roster, Mark Richt’s resignation and the recruiting class that Diaz inherited.

“There may not have been a team with a rougher year than the Miami Hurricanes. The Mark Richt era failed miserably as he couldn’t identify a quality quarterback to build an offense around, and their recruiting class dipped from eighth to 36th this year.

New head coach Manny Diaz looks like a progressive hire who could be the breath of fresh air they have needed for years. Unfortunately, Diaz walked back into a situation he helped create as far as a cooled recruiting class.

The Hurricanes finished sixth in the ACC with a mediocre .877 rating per recruit. Barring the unexpected emergence of transcendent playmakers from this class, this cannot be the new normal for Diaz and the Hurricanes.

With the loss of seven starters to graduation on top of the coaching change, there’s playing time to be earned by this freshman class. The injection of defensive talent looks healthy, but there are still roles that weren’t addressed.

Adding two 3-star offensive tackles, a 3-star quarterback and just one 4-star receiver to an anemic offense won’t be enough to rebuild around in 2019 and beyond. It’s possible none of these players plays an integral role in the future.

The Hurricanes may return to prominence eventually, but this class won’t help them reach it.”

There was a lot left out by Wharton. The three-star quarterback that Wharton mentions is the recently committed Peyton Matocha. The likelihood is that Matocha is just a player to add depth at a position that badly needs it. It fails to mention the addition of Martell who could be a transcendent player for the Hurricanes.

Martell was the 56th ranked player in the country and the number two dual-threat QB in the Class of 2017. He redshirted as a True Freshman at Ohio State in 2017. Martell received limited playing time in 2018 as Heisman Trophy finalist Dwayne Haskins’ backup.

Going by the 2019 rankings, Martell would be third best dual-threat QB. He is a major addition to the Miami football roster not being accounted for.

Losing seven starters to graduation is not a huge number. The Hurricanes return the all Rising Senior linebacking corps of Shaq Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud. Miami has to rebuild the secondary and replacing Gerald Willis at defensive tackle will be impossible. Nnoruka adds stability upfront on the defensive interior.

ACC Football Rx: OT: Attendance Down at Tennessee (RX; HM)

College football attendance leaders usually come down to some combination of the Big Ten and the SEC. Thanks to its 102,455 seat Neyland Stadium, Tennessee is usually among the top 35, if not the top 25 in highest-attendance single games... but not this past season. The best the Vols could muster in 2018 was 39th.

Tennessee's best attended game last season featured almost 15,000 empty seats (vs Florida). UT Vols: How Phillip Fulmer plans to remedy sagging Tennessee football attendance

In terms of actual attendance, Tennessee averaged a home crowd of 77,906 for its seven home games in 2018, records show.

That's a pretty big decline from the glory years of the late 1990's and early 21st century. What happened in Knoxville?

2019 NFL Draft Player Profiles: Syracuse WR Jamal Custis (chatsports.com)

From now until the 2019 NFL Draft takes place, we hope to showcase as many prospects as possible and examine both their strengths and weaknesses. Most of these profiles will feature individuals that the Pittsburgh Steelers are likely to have an interest in, while a few others will be top-ranked players. If there is a player you would like us to analyze, let us know in the comments below.

#17 Jamal Custis/WR/Syracuse/6’5”, 213 Lbs

The Good

-Long strider that gets on top of defenders in a hurry
-Makes terrific adjustments to the ball in the air and times adjustments late so as to not tip off defenders
-Huge catch radius with soft hands
-True home run threat that is comfortable operating out of slot or boundary
-Adept special teams player; served as Syracuse’s gunner on punts throughout time with Orange
-Physical route runner that consistently creates separation with force

The Bad

-Limited route tree while at Syracuse
-Lacks consistent effort as a blocker
-Doesn’t offer much after the catch in terms of creativity or splash YAC
-Tends to body catch the football quite a bit; needs to learn to consistently highpoint the football with his size
-No suddenness or acceleration to his game on underneath routes
-Misses spots down the field on go routes, forcing quarterbacks to hold the football and adjust on the fly

Bio

-Finished four-year career at Syracuse with 64 catches for 1,048 yards and 8 touchdowns
-Huge senior season saw him haul in 51 balls for 906 yards and 6 touchdowns, averaging nearly 18 yards per catch
-Appeared in 27 career games at Syracuse, starting 15, including all 13 in senior season
-Redshirted in 2016 due to high ankle sprain after three games
-Earned an invite to East-West Shrine Game after huge senior season

Tape Breakdown

If you’re a general manager searching for a true home run threat in the 2019 class at wide receiver, look no further than Syracuse’s Jamal Custis.

Meet LSU's newest (and youngest) assistant football coach, Joe Brady; 'He's an innovator' (theadvocate.com; Kubena)

Last summer, Ed Orgeron and the LSU coaching staff gathered inside the Tigers football facilities for a presentation. It was to learn about the New Orleans Saints offense from their offensive coordinator, Pete Carmichael, who had coached with Orgeron when they were both Saints assistants in 2008.

Carmichael brought along a young and fervent offensive assistant, who at one point took over the presentation and captivated the LSU coaching staff with his command of schemes and strategies.

The impression lasted for nearly a year, and Monday, that assistant was formally announced as the replacement for passing game coordinator Jerry Sullivan, who retired in early January.

Maryland football hires Delbert Cowsette as defensive line coach, per reports (testudotimes.com; Johnson)

Mike Locksley's staff took another step toward completion Tuesday, as he's secured a defensive line coach. Maryland football alumnus and former All-ACC selection Delbert Cowsette will return to College Park to coach his former position.

The hire was first reported by Terrapin Times and later by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, and brings Locksley’s coaching staff to nine on-field coaches.

Cowsette has spent the past five seasons at the University of Albany, coaching the defensive tackles and later being promoted to assistant head coach. He and Locksley first crossed paths during his collegiate days, when Locksley was the running backs coach and later running game coordinator while Cowsette played for the Terps.

A seventh-round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Cowsette played six seasons at the next level after being drafted by Washington, playing in between for various Arena Football squads. He first delved into coaching in 2004 as defensive line coach of Potomac High School. Once he was done playing, the former Terp returned to College Park in 2007 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach, then spent two seasons as a coaching intern for the linemen. He’d spend a couple stints at Albany and Hampton, serving as defensive line coach, defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator over his time at the latter.

Albany’s defense struggled in 2018 but was generally a plus throughout Cowsette’s tenure. His lines forced their way into the backfield for 24 sacks in 2016 and 2017. The Great Danes also had the No. 2 scoring defense in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2016. Cowsette also coached defensive end Malachi Hoskins to two straight All-CAA selections, with 16 sacks over those two seasons.

Custis...limited route tree? Interesting. I wonder if it was because he struggled running routes as the reason? Solid write up about him and hope he lands a spot on an NFL roster.

"Sneak" is the wrong verb. "Steal" would do the trick.
