Welcome to Football National Letter of Intent Day!

Signing on the dotted line of the National Letter of Intent means three things:

Your student-athlete has committed to one year at the university. They do not need to sign an NLI after their first year. The school is required to let student-athletes know if their scholarship is being renewed after the first year.
The university is promising to provide an athletic scholarship for that year. The NLI and financial aid package are two separate documents. Your student-athlete will need to sign both.
Your student-athlete’s recruiting journey is over. No other schools can continue to recruit them.

An NLI is a legal, binding contract. So, it is something you are going to want to fully understand before signing it. Your athlete’s new coach and representatives from the school can help answer your questions or concerns when it comes to signing the NLI.

Syracuse football recruiting: Arizona LS Joey Kelly commits as walk-on (PS; Bailey)

Class of 2019 long snapper Joey Kelly committed to Syracuse football as a preferred walk-on late Tuesday night.

He announced the decision on Twitter.

Kelly, who attends Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz., received the offer from Orange special teams coordinator Justin Lustig on Friday, he said previously. He’s been on the Orange’s radar for about three weeks and was contacted through private coach Adam Tanalski of Hammer Kicking Academy.

Lustig, Kelly said, flew out to do a firsthand evaluation of Kelly’s snapping on Monday before returning to Central New York and deciding to extend the opportunity.

Updating Syracuse’s Future Schedules – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Looking at future college football schedules is always fun. While most games are pre-determined by the ACC, Syracuse has freedom to schedule pretty much whoever it wants to in the other four weeks of the season.

Earlier this week, Syracuse football announced its home-and-home series with Ohio University, starting with a 2021 matchup in Athens.

Syracuse Football

@CuseFootball

FUTURE SCHEDULE ALERT

Our home-and-home series with @OhioFootball is now official. The 2021 game will be the first time in 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ years that we'll play the Bobcats!

Orange to Play Ohio in 2021 and 2024 - Syracuse University Athletics

The teams will then follow up with a showdown in the Carrier Dome in 2024. Even though it’s been 100 years, the Orange have historically dominated the Bobcats. In fact, Syracuse has outscored Ohio 111-0 all time.

OU plays in the Mid-American conference, the same league that Dino Babers coached in with Bowling Green before accepting the Syracuse job in 2016.

Scheduling non-conference games can be tough. The goal is to win the games, but the goal is to also get ready for conference play. Here’s what the Orange have lined up in the early months of the next few season.

Super-Bowl-2019-with-cbs-logo-upper-right-corner.jpg

Three Syracuse University students weigh in on the Super Bowl telecast - Sports Broadcast Journal (sportsbroadcastjournal.com; Hamilton, Jackson, Kriley)

Three students at Syracuse University, a school known for its success spawning some of America’s finest sports announcers, assessed the Super Bowl telecast from a younger lens.

Daniel Hamilton:

The 2019 Super Bowl was the worst one that I’ve ever watched. (I’m a senior in college so I obviously haven’t see everyone.) It was even more difficult to watch than the Seahawks massacre of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. Sunday’s game had no storyline. It was just plain boring.

This said, CBS did a decent job of salvaging the telecast. The broadcast duo of Jim Nantz and Tony Romo did their best to keep fans engaged. They made watching the game a little less painful and kept the punt clinic somewhat stimulating. Only in his second year in the booth, Romo is a natural. He and Nantz did what they could to keep the defensive show entertaining.

Boring Super Bowls are predictable problems. They are what they are and out of the control of the televising network. But there was still plenty left to be desired.

From a production perspective, CBS had the opportunity to spice up the game with new content like Next Gen Stats. It could have debuted a new technology system but it missed the mark. The network approached the Super Bowl as though it was just another regular season game. Honestly, if it wasn’t the Super Bowl, even passionate NFL fans would have turned it off.

Louisville football recruits to watch on National Signing Day (bigredl.ouie.com; Lane)

With National Signing Day being Wednesday it’s time to take one final look at the recruits who could end up being members of the 2019 Louisville football recruiting class.

I don’t know about you but it feels like we’ve been in the 2019 recruiting cycle for the last four years, seeing as how technically there’s been two different “classes” for Louisville football.

Former Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino and his staff put together a fairly average recruiting class during their time on campus for 2019, one that featured mostly 2 and 3 star players. It looked like the star of the class was going to be Jaden Johnson, a three star QB out of Memphis, TN, who was all Cards all the time. But after Petrino was let go, Johnson and several others opted out of their commitments shortly before the early signing period, leaving new head coach Scott Satterfield with just three recruits and a lot of work to do.

Here we are almost two and a half months later, and the new staff has casted nets far and wide looking for the type of players who will fit their new scheme at Louisville. There was a rather large concern from the fans before Satterfield was hired about recruiting and whether the former Appalachian State coach would be able to get the type of players that would allow the Cards to compete annually with the likes of Clemson and Florida State in the ACC.

After the hiring of elite recruiters like Cort Dennison, Frank Ponce, Dwayne Ledford, and Bryan Brown, Louisville is ready to go for the future.

The scholarship limitations that were left behind by Bobby Petrino have made the class of 2019 rather unique, but one that was extremely important for this staff to get right as multiple positions have been depleted of all depth, specifically TE and OL.

ACC Football Rx: Let the Rebranding of GT begin! (RX; HM)

From SI: Why Geoff Collins's Georgia Tech Rebuild Starts With a Rebrand

While at Temple, Collins hired Santino Stancato away from the Brooklyn Cyclones (a Class A Mets affiliate) to manage the Owls’ football brand... the Yellow Jackets’ program as its first brand manager. In fact, he’s the first person to hold that particular job title at a Power 5 program.

Why focus so much on brand? Simple, Collins says. “In the NFL, players choose based on contract length and dollar amounts,” he says. “But when high school players choose a school, they’re choosing based on brand. So you create the strongest brand and strongest culture you can.”

...To energize the fan base, the Yellow Jackets needed to look different. Basically, they needed to be cool. And a program located in the capital of the South—surrounded by talent in metro Atlanta—can be cool even if it’s attached to an engineering school that isn’t the easiest to get into or stay in.

Collins knows that... While Collins and Stancato have worked to educate recruits and potential recruits about what Collins plans to do, they also have been busy trying to remind everyone that Georgia Tech wasn’t always a niche program. The bio on the program’s official Twitter feed now reminds visitors that the Yellow Jackets have won four national titles...

Morning Coffee: Winners and losers on football's national signing day (courier-journal.com; Estes)

Hey, sports fans, guess what day it is?!?

It's national signing day!

Well, sort of.

The recent introduction of an early signing period in college football has forever changed the first Wednesday in February, which for years was a national holiday for college football fans as recruiting classes became official.

Now it's anticlimactic. Most of the prospects sign on the early date in December. Signing Day as we know it will never be the same, and we can only look back with nostalgia.

Good players, however, will sign today. And that makes it an enormous day for Louisville's new coaching staff. The Cardinals entered the late signing date needing a lot of help in a class that was gutted during the end of the Bobby Petrino era. As of Tuesday morning, U of L's class was rated 14 out of 14 teams in the ACC and a woeful 123rd nationally, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

That can happen when you only have nine commitments, but it's unrealistic to expect this program to be competitive on a Power Five level unless things improve quickly under Scott Satterfield, who to be fair, deserves little to no blame for the current state of Louisville's recruiting.

Satterfield's former program at Appalachian State – with 17 commits as of Tuesday – ranked 94th nationally. That means Satterfield and his assistants, with a notable exception in quarterback Evan Conley, didn't raid the Mountaineers' class after taking the Louisville job. That is admirable, especially given the Cards' desperate circumstances.

Meanwhile, here's a primer on signing day for Kentucky football, which has already secured much of its 2019 class.

And here's a look around the college football landscape on signing day:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: All 247Sports recruiting rankings referenced below were as of Tuesday morning. They can and will change as uncommitted players make decisions.)

Winners

The same teams as usual

The fact we continue to see the same group of schools perform at the sport's highest level each season is not an accident. It all goes back to recruiting.

Alabama's 2019 class was rated No. 1 (because of course it is), followed by Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, LSU, Michigan, Oregon, Clemson, Penn State, Florida, Auburn, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Tennessee to round out the top 15.

Of those 15, only four — Texas A&M, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee — have not reached a national title game in the past 11 seasons. You wouldn't exactly call any of those four minnows (though we see you, Tennessee).

How the transfer portal took over the college football offseason and rejuvenated Miami (miamiherald.com; Wilson)

Manny Diaz insists there isn’t anything too complex behind his social-media strategy — he just uses a Google keyboard to sift through GIFs to find whatever best fits the Miami Hurricanes’ latest hype-inducing announcement — but, man, what a find he discovered to Tate Martell’s transfer.

A bleach-blond, headband clad Barry Bostwick from “Megaforce,” a 1983 nominee for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, is a bizzaro ringer for Martell. It’s still not exactly clear how Diaz even found the GIF, unless he has an encyclopedic knowledge of bad ‘80s action moves, which bombed at the box office.

“I like to amuse myself,” Diaz said earlier this week.

In turn, he has amused Miami Hurricanes fans all offseason. As Jan. 15 bled into Jan. 16, Miami pulled Martell through the transfer portal from the Ohio State Buckeyes and kept wide receiver Jeff Thomas from following through on a planned transfer to the Illinois Fighting Illini.

This came less than a week after former Southern California Trojans safety Bubba Bolden, a four-star recruit in the Class of 2017, and former Buffalo Bulls wide receiver K.J. Osborn both announced they would transfer to the Hurricanes. Less than a week later, defensive lineman Chigozie Nnoruka said he planned to transfer to Miami from the UCLA Bruins.

This could have been an offseason from hell for the Hurricanes. They went 7-6. Their star defensive coordinator left to become the coach of the Temple Owls. They got throttled in the Pinstripe Bowl. Their coach abruptly retired. They hired the defensive coordinator back as coach. Their recruiting class sits outside the top 30 in the 247Sports.com composite rankings entering National Signing Day on Wednesday.

And, somehow, Miami seems to be excited about the Hurricanes again.

Praise Portal.

2019 recruiting classes close with 2nd football signing day :: WRALSportsFan.com (wrapsportsfan.com; AP; Russo)

Signing Day Part II is here and while nobody is catching Alabama for the recruiting crown, there is still some work to be done and a few blue-chippers to sign.

About 80 percent of available scholarships in FBS were scooped up during the early signing period in December. The traditional February signing period, which begins Wednesday, is more of an afterthought.

Some drama might be drummed up around the few remaining unsigned five-star prospects. Darnell Wright, an offensive lineman from West Virginia, is expected to choose between Tennessee and Alabama. Jerrion Ealy, a running back from Mississippi, will pick between Clemson and Ole Miss.

Miami and Southern California are trying to recover from underwhelming Decembers, and Florida State looks to finish strong after a disappointing first season under Willie Taggart.

ACC Football Rx: Drool-worthy P5 OOC Games, 2021-30 (RX; HM)

Drool-worthy P5 OOC Games, 2021-30

There are good P5 non-conference games every year. Some are just better...

According to FBSchedules, these are Drool-worthy: 12 future non-conference home-and-homes to look forward to. Here's the whole list, along with comments for just the ACC-related games (i.e. Clemson and Notre Dame):

2021/2022
AUBURN vs. PENN STATE
OKLAHOMA vs. NEBRASKA

2022/2023
ALABAMA vs. TEXAS
NOTRE DAME vs. OHIO STATE

When: 2022 (in Columbus) and 2023 (in South Bend)

Despite their campuses being only 250-miles apart, these two giants have only met six times previously with only four coming in the regular season.

The two-last clashed in the 2015/16 Fiesta Bowl (a 44-28 Buckeye win). Prior to that it was the 2005/06 edition of the Fiesta – another OSU win. Then there were home-and-homes in 1995 and 1996 (both Buckeye wins) and 1935 and 1936 (Notre Dame’s only two victories in the series).

2024/2025
NOTRE DAME vs. TEXAS A&M

When: 2024 (in College Station) and 2025 (in South Bend)

The Irish and Aggies last met in a home-and-home in 2000 and 2001, the host team winning on each occasion. The balance of the five-game series came in three Cotton Bowls played in a seven-year span. Notre Dame won in back-to-back appearances in 1993/94 and 1992/93 and Texas A&M was victorious in the 1987/88 game – also the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

2025/2026
CLEMSON vs. LSU

When: 2025 (in Clemson) and 2026 (in Baton Rouge)

The 2025 game between Clemson and LSU will mark the first time the two Tigers have during the regular season. The three previous matchups came in the 2012 Peach Bowl (a narrow 25-24 Clemson victory), the 1996 edition of the Peach Bowl (a 10-7 LSU win) and then the 1958/59 Sugar Bowl (a 7-0 LSU win). The Sugar Bowl win over Clemson sealed the deal on LSU’s first-ever national championship.
