Welcome to Iwo Jima Day!

Iwo Jima Day marks the anniversary of the date in February 1945 when the Battle of Iwo Jima began, with the invasion of Iwo Jima island by the United States Armed Forces. The day is officially observed in Massachusetts and unofficially marked across the United States. Some of the bloodiest fighting of the Pacific Theater of World War II took place at Iwo Jima.

The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted five weeks, with the United States capturing the island at its conclusion. Although it was believed from the start that the United States would win, it was thought that the battle would last days, or maybe a week, but not five weeks. The United States had larger numbers of people and arms, as well as air supremacy, and Japan couldn't retreat or be reinforced. About 70,000 Marines fought in the battle, compared to 21,000 Japanese forces. What was not known by the United States at first was the extent that Japan had built up their defenses, consisting of fortifications in the mountains, camouflaged artillery, and underground tunnels.

Syracuse Football: Orange in Alliance of American Football, Week 2 recap (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Alliance of American Football is now in full swing after completing Week 2. Here’s how all the former Syracuse football alum performed.

The Alliance of American Football is a unique opportunity for former Syracuse football stars both past and present to strut their stuff in front of thousands of fans in person and millions watching at home.

The AAF message is clear, play great ball and you’ll earn an opportunity to get back into the NFL. With Week 2 of AAF in the books, here’s how all the former Orange alum performed on the biggest stage.

Here’s how some former Orange stars performed in Week 2:

Amba Etta-Tawo, WR, Birmingham Iron
Amba Etta-Tawo injured his knee and did not participate in practice leading up to Week 2. There were reports suggesting Etta-Tawo would still play but on a snap count. The Iron ended up playing it safe and rested him this week. Birmingham is one of three undefeated teams left in the AAF after defeating the Salt Lake Stallions 12-9 in their Week 2 matchup.
Ervin Philips, WR, Atlanta Legends
Philips is one of three starting wide receivers for the Atlanta Legends. He was targeted twice and didn’t record a reception in Atlanta’s Week 2 loss vs the San Diego Fleet (22-14 final score).

Cauthen Named ACC Video Coordinator of the Year - Wake Forest University Athletics (godeacs.com)

Ben Cauthen, Wake Forest's director of football video operations and technology, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association.

Cauthen was selected by a majority vote of his peers in the ACC to receive the Conference Video Coordinator of the Year honor. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award which will be announced at the annual CSVA banquet on May 15, 2019 in Anaheim, Calif.

The Bob Matey Award is presented to the Video Coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance, and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&M.

Cauthen came to Wake Forest after three seasons as the video coordinator at Temple University. In addition to his football video duties with the Owls, he also oversaw the department's conversion from standard definition to full high definition. He also assisted in designing the audio/visual components of the Edberg-Olson Hall football facility expansion in 2012.

Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Cauthen spent three seasons as the video coordinator for The Citadel football program. He coordinated all video operations for the football team, including game exchanges, game film, practice film and motivational highlights.

ACC Football Rx: CBS updates Grades for 2018-19 Coaching Hires (RX; HM)

Coaching carousel winners and losers: New grades for every hire ahead of the 2019 season (UPDATED). Here are the updated grades (ACC teams only) from CBS Sports:
U of Miami Manny Diaz* A
This is about as good a result that could be expected after the shocking retirement of Mark Richt on Dec. 30. Diaz left Temple after only 18 days to come back home. It's hard to blame him for leaving Temple. Born in Miami, Diaz's dad was mayor of the city. For the last three seasons, he was Richt's defensive coordinator. Diaz has hit the ground sprinting being aggressive in the transfer portal and calling all of it The New Miami.

Louisville Scott Satterfield B
Tom Jurich, Rick Pitino and Bobby Petrino did their best lately to burn Louisville athletics to the ground. Satterfield was the next-best choice after Purdue's Jeff Brohm turned down Louisville. He is considered a top-flight up-and-comer who was mentioned in almost every coaching search east of the Mississippi. Appalachian State won three straight Sun Belt titles under Satterfield.

Georgia Tech Geoff Collins B
The former Temple coach and Florida DC got a seven-year deal from Georgia Tech. He'll need that long to clear out a roster full of Paul Johnson's option running backs, quarterbacks and offensive linemen. Three of Johnson's starting offensive linemen weighed less than 285 pounds. Ouch. Techsters everywhere will love Collins. He'll deliver having coached under George O'Leary and Chan Gailey.

N Carolina Mack Brown B-
Mack is one of my favorites. He deserves another shot at 67. But is it just me, or did AD Bubba Cunningham paint himself in a corner by not seriously considering anyone else? Brown has a history with UNC, but with Clemson taking off and leaving the rest of the ACC behind, shouldn't that be the No. 1 consideration? Five years from now, UNC will probably be better off, but will it be any closer to Clemson?

P5 Teams with worse scores than UNC: Kansas State got a C+. USC and Rutgers were judged to be "losers".

Stadium’s Pre-Spring College Football Top 25 - Stadium (watchstadium.com; Staff)

One ACC team in the top 25? That isn't even possible...someone besides Clemson is going to win 9 or 10 games.

The college football head coaching carousel has come to a stop, and we now know where the top 2019 recruits will be attending school after the conclusion of the spring National Signing Day. Spring games will start later this month and we’re about six months away from Week 1 of the college football season. We finally have a sense of what schools’ coaching staffs and rosters will look like, which means we can begin to analyze which teams are poised to have a strong 2019 as they head into spring practice.

It should be no surprise that last year’s national champion and runner-up – Clemson and Alabama – are in a great position to make another run to the College Football Playoff National Championship with the return of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, plus numerous offensive playmakers for both schools.

There are also some new faces, like Nebraska and Missouri, that have momentum to be top-25 caliber teams after finishing the 2018 season ranked outside of the top 25.

Here are Stadium College Football Insider Brett McMurphy’s pre-spring top 25 rankings.

Double vision: Miami will host Miami in future football game (miamiherald.com; Degnan & Wilson)

Hard Rock Stadium will be filled with Miami fans — and probably only Miami fans — when the two college football programs meet for the fourth time in history in 2023.

The Miami Hurricanes have scheduled a somewhat confusing nonconference game with the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks for what appears to be the season opener of the 2023 season. The Hurricanes are set to host the RedHawks on Sept. 2, 2023, a source confirmed Monday.

The RedHawks “will receive a $1.5 million guarantee for the game, per a copy of the contract obtained from Miami University,” according to FBSchedules.com, which first reported the news.

The contract between the two schools is an agreement for the lone game at Hard Rock.

Virginia Tech football: Hokies promote Justin Hamilton (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente announced on Monday that former Hokie, Justin Hamilton, had been promoted to safeties coach for the 2019 season. Hamilton, a former running back, wide receiver and defensive back during his time in Blacksburg from 2002-05. He originally joined the staff last April as the director of player development for the defense.

COACHING UPDATE

Please join us in congratulating @coach_ham on his well-deserved promotion to safeties coach!

DETAILS ⤵️Hamilton promoted to safeties coach for Hokies - Virginia Tech Athletics #LPD

Hamilton replaces Tyrone Nix, who left after one season to return to the SEC and took a similar position at Ole Miss where his brother is running backs coach. Nix was hired last April after former safeties coach, Galen Scott, departed due to an extramarital affair had came to light. Nix was never a fit in Blacksburg on the recruiting trail or this coaching staff.

Hamilton began his coaching career in 2011 at UVa-Wise. He spent three years there serving as a defensive coordinator and helping on the team strength and conditioning staff. He took a job at VMI in 2014, where he spent four years where he coached inside linebackers and special teams.

During his time as an assistant, he spent several years building and developing relationships with high school coaches all across Virginia.

This is, without a doubt, an upgrade for the Hokies. Hamilton brings a passion to the coaching staff and a knowledge of the region as well as experience playing in Bud Foster’s defense. Nix didn’t appear to have much of an interest in being in Blacksburg in his short time.

Best fish fry in CNY: See the finalists, vote for the winner (PS; Pucci)

For something seemingly as simple as fried fish, there sure are a lot of places that serve it in Central New York and just as many opinions about who makes the best.
After tallying all 1,300-plus nominations for 176(!) different restaurants, supermarkets and seafood shops across the eight-county region—Onondaga, Oneida, Oswego, Cayuga, Seneca, Cortland, Tompkins and Madison—we have our four finalists.
The final poll is open until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27. You can vote once per day.

Best fish fry in CNY: See our updated list of top nominees
The nomination period ends on Sunday, Feb. 17.

While the public votes on the readers’ choice winner, our judges will visit the four finalists and taste the best they have to offer.
Along with Best of CNY and Upstate New York writer and critic Jacob Pucci and managing producer Charlie Miller, our judging panel will feature restaurateur Bob Corning. Corning owned Swallow’s Restaurant in Syracuse’s Elmwood neighborhood for 35 years, where he selected, purchased and fried fish every Friday. To this day, he still cooks when the kitchen needs an extra hand.
Each finalist will be judged on all the components of a fish fry dinner: Fried fish, French fries, onion rings, coleslaw and at least one other seafood or house specialty.
