Welcome to Pony Express Day!

The Pony Express was a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail.

The Pony Express was a great financial investment to the US. During its 18 months of operation, it reduced the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 10 days.[1] From April 3, 1860 to October 1861, it became the West's most direct means of east–west communication before the transcontinental telegraph was established (October 24, 1861), and was vital for tying the new U.S. state of California with the rest of the United States.

Georgia adding games with ACC schools Clemson, Florida State (pilotonline.com; AP)

for gbo

Georgia is adding Atlantic Coast Conference schools Clemson and Florida State to its future football schedules.

Both home-and-home series were announced Tuesday.

The Bulldogs will play Florida State in Tallahassee in 2027 with the schools meeting at Georgia the following year.

Clemson and Georgia had already announced three games between them, in 2024 at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta and a home-and-home series in 2029 and 2030. The latest pair of games will take place in Athens, Georgia in 2032 and at Clemson's Death Valley in 2033.

The Bulldogs will face at least two ACC opponents in each of those years to go along with its annual rivalry with Georgia Tech. Clemson and Florida State add a second Southeastern Conference opponent to their schedules, adding to the Tigers rivalry with South Carolina and the Seminoles rivalry with Florida.

NC State's quarterback battle heats up ahead of spring game :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; video)

Ryan Finley has moved on to the NFL and now Dave Doeren has some options as to who his new starting quarterback will be.

Many project that Finley's former back-up, Matt McKay, will take the first snaps during the spring game Saturday.

"I'm not anxious, I'm excited. At the end of the day I'm playing football with my friends and teammates, so I'm definitely happy to be out here," McKay said.

Devin Leary is another front-runner for the starting gig. He says watching Finley elevated his game.

"He's really good at preparing for each and every game," explained Leary. "He takes every practice like it's another game and he's always locked in."

Oh wait, there's one more. Florida State transfer, Bailey Hockman. Hockman lost the battle to Deondre Francois when he was a Seminole.

Just how good are all 130 college football teams looking as we dive into the dog days of the offseason?

Obviously, a slew of key position battles still have to be figured out. There will be injuries, transfers, and only about a million other things happening to change this over the next few months. But for now, here’s your snapshot of every team.

This isn’t about where the teams will end up – the CFN Season Rankings are about production, not talent. It’s about how strong everyone looks at the moment, with the next rankings coming this summer as a part of Preview 2019.

Proposed 283-unit apartment complex in Syracuse runs into opposition (PS; Moriarty)

A New Jersey company’s proposal to build a $62 million development with nearly 300 apartments in the Syracuse University area has run into strong opposition.

The Syracuse Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-0 on Thursday to deny variances needed by Northside Genesee Associates’ to build 283 apartments on a 1.7-acre site in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of East Genesee Street.

The vote came after both the zoning board and the Syracuse Planning Commission wrote letters to the developer saying they think the project would be too big for the neighborhood.

“The proposal involves substantial demolition of primarily small-scale buildings and their replacement with a single building having a much larger mass and scale,” the zoning board wrote.

“The proposal’s 283 dwelling units and parking garage, with virtually complete lot coverage, would create a concentration of high density inconsistent with the low- to medium-density of the existing neighborhood," the Planning Commission said. “Additionally, the proposed building’s mass, scale, materials and detailing would stand in stark contrast to the salient characteristics of the subject neighborhood.”
