Welcome to Dog Farting Awareness Day!

Let's talk about farts. Like humans, all dogs fart. It doesn't matter their age, size, or breed. Sometimes people blame their own farts on dogs, but sometimes dogs really are to blame. Those who are thinking about adopting a dog must be aware of this.

Syracuse Football: Top 3 questions ahead of Spring Football Saturday (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Who will step up at linebacker in 2019?

For the third straight season, the Syracuse football team will have to replace their entire linebacking corps. It’s not an ideal scenario, but the Orange have made the best of it. Two years ago, Syracuse lost a pair unlike any other in Zaire Franklin and Parris Bennett.

Both Zaire and Parris went on to the NFL and a couple of rascals had to take their place this past season in Kielan Whitner and Ryan Guthrie. Both were inexperienced playing other positions before transitioning to linebacker. Kielan used to play in the secondary and Guthrie played on the defensive line. But both excelled in their new roles and Guthrie even earned All-ACC second-team honors.

So what about 2019?

Syracuse Football: Top 3 questions ahead of Spring Football Saturday (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football is finally back this week after a long hiatus. Here are the top three questions ahead of Spring Football Saturday.

After weeks of padded practices behind closed doors, it’s time for the Syracuse football squad to come out and play. This time with another new name: “Spring Football Saturday”.

This upcoming Saturday here is what will be going down:

The annual offense vs defense scrimmage.

There will be an autograph signing by some of the Orange football players.

There will be several Orange legends appearing including but not limited too: Tom Coughlin, Larry Csonka, and Floyd Little (among others).

The scrimmage starts at 1:30 p.m. Gates open at 12:30 p.m.

Five observations from Duke football's spring showcase (dukechronincle; Kolin)

Duke wrapped up spring practice with its annual spring showcase Friday evening. Here are five observations from the scrimmage at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Quentin Harris ready to take over

With Daniel Jones preparing for the NFL Draft, it’s finally Quentin Harris’ turn to run the offense for good. And in the 65-snap scrimmage, the soon-to-be redshirt senior impressed, completing seven of his 11 pass attempts for 69 yards and accounting for three of the game’s four touchdowns—one aerial and two on the ground.

Harris has always been able to run the ball well—it’s his inconsistent arm that has caused concern about whether he has what it takes to lead Duke's offense. But that right arm of the Wilton, Conn., native looked fine Friday evening, proving accurate in short-yardage situations and completing a beautiful 38-yard deep ball to fellow redshirt senior Aaron Young.

“I think it really helped,” Harris said of how his playing time while Jones was hurt last season prepared him to be the starter. “[Jones] helped me navigate those two starts, how to prepare for each week, how to look at film, what to evaluate, what to look for. So I think having those two starts under my belt helped me kind of craft a a pre-game or pre-week method or process.”

Defense looking for new leadership

In the past few seasons, the Blue Devils’ identity has been stingy defense, led by one of the most talented linebacking corps in the country. But with All-American Joe Giles-Harris and All-ACC honorable mention counterpart Ben Humphreys also leaving Durham, that defense must find some new leaders this fall.

Pitt Returns to Retro Color Scheme, Reveals New Secondary Logo

The University of Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon announced the return of its retro color scheme and introduced a new secondary logo, as well as new uniforms and number font for all 19 athletic programs.

Pitt first donned royal blue and athletic/mustard gold in 1973, the football program’s first season under legendary coach Johnny Majors. The Panthers were among the nation’s worst teams at the time, but steadily improved their record over the next few years, which culminated in an undefeated season and national championship in 1976. The color scheme remained a staple of Pitt athletics until the department switched to navy and Vegas Gold in 1997.

Hoops & Helmets: Ranking The Combination Of Football And Basketball Schools 1-130 (CFN; Fiutak)

Bowls & Buckets: Post-Seasons In Both Sports

And no, anything done in the NIT, CBI or CIT doesn’t get you on the list for the exclusive club.

These schools hold the distinction of getting both a bowl bid and an invite into the NCAA Tournament – with one big exception. If you win a national title, you get here.

Yes, a good run in the hoops tourney makes a big difference, but football is bigger overall to the bottom line. Come up with a great year in football and a good year and hoops, and it’s all good.

2018-2019 Hoops & Helmets

Losers in Both Sports | Good Hoops, No Gridiron

One Great Sport | Winners In Both Sports

Bowls & NCAAs | Top Ten
2017-2018 | CFN Spring Rankings

30. Temple Owls

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking:
Football: 8-5 overall, 7-1 in conference, 2nd in AAC East
Basketball: 23-10 overall, 13-5 in conference, T3rd in AAC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Owls had good seasons in both sports, but they didn’t come through after the regular seasons. The football team won six of its final seven games, and then got blown out by Duke in the Independence Bowl. The basketball team got knocked out of the NCAA First Four by Belmont.

29. Arizona State Sun Devils

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 52
Football: 7-6 overall, 5-4 in conference, 2nd in Pac-12 South
Basketball: 23-11 overall, 12-6 in conference, 2nd in Pac-12

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? It was a positive season in both sports, even if both ended with a thud, The football team got to a bowl game under Herm Edwards, but lost. It beat Arizona, though, to keep it from going bowling. The basketball team got into the NCAA Tournament – Arizona didn’t do that – and found its way out of the First Four before getting blown out by Buffalo in the first round.

28. Baylor Bears

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 105
Football: 7-6 overall, 4-5 in conference, T5th in Big 12
Basketball: 20-14 overall, 10-8 in conference, 4th in Big 12

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Bears might hav lost four straight basketball games to close out the regular season, but they still got into the NCAA Tournament and beat Syracuse before losing to Gonzaga in the second round. The football program bounced back from a rough run to go bowling and finish with a winning season, beating Vanderbilt in the Texas Bowl.

27. Mississippi State Bulldogs

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 40
Football: 8-5 overall, 4-4 in conference, 4th in SEC West
Basketball: 23-11 overall, 10-8 in conference, T6th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? Yeah, the Bulldogs got into the NCAA Tournament, but it got bounced out in the first round by Liberty as a 5-seed. The football team might have lost to Iowa in the Outback Bowl, but it was a good first year under head coach Joe Moorhead.

26. Houston Cougars

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 21
Football: 8-5 overall, 5-3 in conference, T1st in AAC West
Basketball: 33-4 overall, 16-2 in conference, 1st in AAC
How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Cougar basketball team was amazing in the regular season, but it lost the AAC title game and got knocked out in the Sweet 16 by Kentucky. The football team might have won eight games and went to a bowl game, but it lost four of its last five games and got destroyed by Army 70-14 in the Armed Forces Bowl.

25. Wisconsin Badgers

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 61
Football: 8-5 overall, 5-4 in conference, T2nd in Big Ten West
Basketball: 23-11 overall, 14-6 in conference, 4th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? Considering where the bar is set now for the athletic department, it was a disappointing run in both sports. The basketball team got destroyed by Oregon in the first round of the NCAAs, and while the football team won the Pinstripe Bowl over Miami, it didn’t get to the Big Ten Championship.

24. Minnesota Golden Gophers

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 108
Football: 7-6 overall, 3-6 in conference, T5th in Big Ten West
Basketball: 22-14 overall, 9-11 in conference, 7th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? It was a nice all-around year for Gopher sports. The football team broke the long hex against Wisconsin by taking back the Paul Bunyan Axe in a dominant win to become bowl eligible, and rocked Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl. The hoops team sputtered down the stretch, but got into the NCAA Tournament and beat Louisville in the first round.

23. Purdue Boilermakers

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 11
Football: 6-7 overall, 5-4 in conference, T2nd in Big Ten West
Basketball: 26-10 overall, 16-4 in conference, T1st in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Boilermakers were a free throw away from knocking Virginia out of the NCAA Tournament, losing out in the Elite Eight. The football season was bigger than just wins and losses thanks to the heroic story of Tyler Trent. On the field, the Boilermakers beat Indiana to get bowl eligible, but got dropkicked by Auburn 63-14 in the Music City Bowl.

22. Virginia Tech Hokies

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 17
Football: 6-7 overall, 4-4 in conference, T3rd in ACC Coastal
Basketball: 26-9 overall, 12-6 in conference, 5th in ACC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team came up with a strange bomb of a year, getting rolled by Old Dominion and needing to pull off an amazing win over Virginia to trigger a game against Marshall for a shot to get bowl eligible, and … a loss to Cincinnati in the Military Bowl. The basketball side had a nice season, right up until it missed an alley-oop layup to get knocked out of the NCAA Sweet 16 by Duke.

21. Syracuse Orange

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 75
Football: 10-3 overall, 6-2 in conference, 2nd in ACC Atlantic
Basketball: 20-14 overall, 10-8 in conference, T6th in ACC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football program outplayed the basketball team? Jim Boeheim’s squad struggled late in the season losing four of its last five games and eight of the last 12, including to Baylor in the first round of the NCAAs. Dino Babers came up with a whale of a season on the football side, winning ten games including the Camping World Bowl against West Virginia.

20. Nevada Wolf Pack

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 76
Football: 8-5 overall, 5-3 in conference, T2nd in M-West West
Basketball: 29-5 overall, 15-3 in conference, T1st in Mountain West

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Wolf Pack hoops team might have lost the Mountain West Championship game, and got knocked out right away by Florida in the NCAAs, but it was dominant during the regular season with a 14-0 start. The football team had a nice breakthrough year with an eight-win campaign including an Arizona Bowl win over Arkansas State.

19. Iowa State Cyclones

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 73
Football: 8-5 overall, 6-3 in conference, T3rd in Big 12
Basketball: 23-12 overall, 9-9 in conference, 5th in Big 12

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? It was an amazing finish to the regular season for the basketball team, overcoming a rough patch to rip off three straight wins to take the Big 12 Tournament title. The loss to Ohio State in the first round of NCAAs soured things, though. The football team started 1-3, and then it all changed, winning seven of its last eight games before dropping the Alamo Bowl to Washington State in a thriller.

18. Iowa Hawkeyes

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 71
Football: 9-4 overall, 5-4 in conference, T2nd in Big Ten West
Basketball: 23-12 overall, 10-10 in conference, 6th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? It was a good year for both sides. The football team overcame a few rough losses to win its final three games, including a tough one against Mississippi State in the Outback Bowl. The basketball side struggled down the stretch going five of its last six games, but it stunned Cincinnati in the first round of the NCAAs and lost a heartbreaker to Tennessee in overtime.

17. Cincinnati Bearcats

2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 68
Football: 11-2 overall, 6-2 in conference, 3rd in AAC East
Basketball: 28-7 overall, 14-4 in conference, 2nd in AAC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Bearcats had huge seasons in both sports. The football team under Luke Fickell won 11 games including the Military Bowl over Virginia Tech. The basketball team was booted out of the first round of the NCAAs by Iowa, but that came after getting by Houston for the American Athletic tournament title.

16. Buffalo Bulls
2018 Hoops & Helmets Ranking: 38
Football: 10-4 overall, 7-1 in conference, 1st in MAC East
Basketball: 32-4 overall, 16-2 in conference, 1st in MAC East

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? It was a fantastic year in both sports, even if the football side fizzled. UB rolled to an amazing 10-2 start, but gacked away the MAC title game to Northern Illinois, and lost to Troy in the Dollar General Bowl. The basketball team dominated on the way to a MAC title, and won a game in the NCAA Tournament before getting knocked out by Te
xas Tech.

Several Syracuse-area Friendly’s restaurants close abruptly (PS; Doran)

Friendly’s restaurants in DeWitt, Syracuse and Clay closed abruptly today.

Workers at the Friendly’s restaurant at 3275 Erie Blvd. East in DeWitt said they aren’t sure why they are closing. They are in the midst of closing the store this morning, employees said.

Along with the Friendly’s restaurant in DeWitt, the Friendly’s at 3701 James S. Syracuse and at Great Northern Mall all closed as of 6 a.m. today, workers said.

Friendly’s restaurants in the city of Oswego, Endicott and Watertown, as well as the Buffalo- and Rochester-areas, also closed suddenly Sunday.

The Friendly’s restaurant in Cortland and at 3873 Route 31 in Clay remain open.

One thing I miss living down here in the South is Friendly's. A Shame if they are closing for good.

Friendly's Closes 23 Restaurants in the Northeast

Friendly's has closed 23 of its restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and New York, according to MassLive.
More than half of the closures are in New York, but the closures also include three stores apiece in Massachusetts and Connecticut, two in New Hampshire and one in Maine.
The Wilbraham-based Friendly's, which first started out in Springfield in 1935, is known in part for its ice cream products, including sundaes, fribbles, and floats, with its restaurants also serving such items as burgers and seafood dishes
Friendly's declared bankruptcy in 2011, and was sold to Texas-based food and beverage company Dean Foods Company in 2016 for $155 million.

Friendly’s closes restaurants in Framingham, Holden and 20 other locations (list)

Last week, Dennis Pfaff, chief operating officer of Friendly’s, said he expected more restaurants to close as leases expire. The chain, he said, is shrinking its networked to fit market conditions and shedding stores that that are no longer in high-traffic shopping locations.
The closed locations include 14 restaurants in upstate New York, three in Massachusetts, three in Connecticut, two in New Hampshire and one in Maine. Following these actions, Friendly’s will have 77 corporate-owned restaurants and 97 franchisee-owned restaurants.

I didn't realize they sold to a Texas company. Too bad Dean Foods hasn't opened up any stores down here.

That's too bad. We used to get Friendly's ice cream quite a bit growing up.
