Welcome to Earth Day!

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Prior to this, there was virtually no environmental movement. Factories pumped toxins into the air, recycling was almost non-existent, and gas guzzling vehicles were the norm. The seeds of the modern movement had been planted, however, with the publishing of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962. This book raised the public's awareness of pollution and its effect on health. In 1969, water pollution and chemical waste disposal came to the attention of the public, after the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland caught fire.

Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin was deeply concerned about environmental issues. After witnessing the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969, he began planning for the first Earth Day. This was during the time of Vietnam War protests and teach-ins, and Nelson thought he could bring the problems of pollution into the public consciousness by organizing similar types of teach-ins. He hoped that by shining a spotlight on environmental issues in this way, there may be a chance of bringing them into the realm of national priorities, where they had yet to be seen. He announced Earth Day at a conference in Seattle in September of 1969.

Which Syracuse Players Could Break Out in 2019? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

This week’s NFL Draft is a reminder of the talent that is departing Syracuse and on its way to the next level. But it also gives us a chance to look ahead to what could be for the Orange in 2019. With open voids, there figures to be a few unknowns that break into the spotlight for SU next season. We know Syracuse’s offense has a couple of major openings, but some secondary guys could be the ones that emerge to really strengthen the Orange’s 2019 season.

Ed Hendrix – Redshirt Freshman, WR

There’s someone every year. Last year we saw a trio of receivers step up in the form of Jamal Custis, Taj Harris and Nykeim Johnson. While the latter two will be back next season, Custis is a graduated NFL Draft prospect. Like Custis, Hendrix is an exceptional blend of size and speed. He’s 6-foot-3 with a 4.4 40-yard dash time. So why have you maybe not heard of him before? He had a season-ending lower body injury during the regular season and was shut down for nearly all of spring practice with a lower leg injury. Hendrix is the most Custis-like wideout on the roster now, and could have the most Custis-like year in 2019.

for gbo...the SEC idiots are embarrassing themselves again...

Clemson has become the SEC Media's worst nightmare (scacchoops.com; JFann)

Now that basketball season has come to end, we’re seeing a lot of off-season college football talk. This week we saw many SEC media types take direct aim at Clemson football. Following the lead of the Alabama football program, many in the SEC media had a litany of excuses for why Clemson has become their worst nightmare to the dominant SEC football narrative.

Let me be clear… They play good football in the SEC. There’s a lot of NFL talent on many of the teams’ rosters. I even ranked the SEC as the top football in country most of this year. After a fairly pedestrian 6-6 bowl season with multiple blowout losses, certainly the SEC isn’t heads and shoulders of above the rest of the country. They haven’t been for a number of years. It started with Florida State ending their impressive 7 year national championship run by 4 different teams with the 2013 National Title. You know this if you follow college football AT ALL. The fact is ACC teams led by Clemson are 28 – 26 against SEC teams over the last 5 years. This is something SEC Media apologists will quietly dismiss as well. Guess what 5 years of football is a pretty large data point…

Here comes the SEC Media with a backhanded semi-compliment about Clemson.

Bizarre’ Saturday saw Mark Richt back around Canes program (floridafootballinsiders.com)

It was already odd enough at the Miami Hurricanes were choosing to play their Spring football game in Orlando. Well, if a four-hour drive to the north in the middle of the state, instead of playing on campus or Hard Rock Stadium etc. raised an eyebrow, then, who “popped in” on his old team did a lot more than that.

That’s, because former coach Mark Richt made a surprise sudden appearance at Camping World Stadium.

It turns out that Richt was there, as part of being announced as a new analyst for the soon-to-debut ACC Television network that ESPN is putting together:

ACC Football Rx: ACCN UPDATE: Another FB Analyst Hired - 4/20/19 (RX; HM)

ACCN UPDATE: Another FB Analyst Hired - 4/20/19

Welcome to the ACC Network family, @MarkRicht

From The Spun: Former Georgia, Miami Coach Mark Richt Joins ESPN’s ACC Network

After stepping down from the Hurricanes in surprise fashion late in 2018, Richt becomes
the newest analyst for ESPN’s ACC Network.

Mark Richt follows the pattern of hiring ACC alumni:
Mark Richt's playing career
1979–1982 QB, U of Miami

Richt is a good choice for ACCN football analyst, too. Why? Because he's in a unique position to talk about two different ACC programs (FSU and Miami), as well as the AAC and SEC, thanks to previous coaching stops.

Coaching career (HC unless noted)

1985–1988 Florida State (GA)
1989 East Carolina (OC)
1990–1993 Florida State (QB)
1994–2000 Florida State (OC/QB)
2001–2015 Georgia
2016–2018 Miami (FL)

ACC Football Rx: 2019 Preseason Predictions, Weeks 0 and 1 (RX; HM)

JHowell has posted his "projections for the NCAA IA football games through the games of 9-2-2019" based on his preseason computer model.

The favorite is listed first with the projected margin of victory (i.e., the line) in parenthesis. 'TP' represents the total number of points expected to be scored in the game and 'Odds' represents the odds of the favorite winning straight-up (not against-the-spread).

As usual, I'm only showing the ACC games - you'll have to visit his site to see the rest. As an added benefit, I've color-coded the projected margins: red for double-digit, blue for a field goal or less, black for anything between 4 and 9 points.

As always, this is for entertainment purposes only - no wagering! [Neither ACCFootballRx nor Hokie Mark in any way advocate, support, receive money from or condone gambling].

Saturday, August 24, 2019
#20-Florida (-1) vs. #24-Miami (Florida) (TP=50 Odds=.519) @ Orlando, FL

Thursday, August 29, 2019
#1-Clemson (-34) vs. #44-Georgia Tech (TP=57 Odds=.907)

Friday, August 30, 2019
#48-Wake Forest (-2.5) vs. #47-Utah State (TP=61 Odds=.537)

Saturday, August 31, 2019
#2-Alabama (-30.5) vs. #41-Duke (TP=55 Odds=.885) @ Atlanta, GA
#16-Boise State (-5) vs. #42-Florida State (TP=55 Odds=.577) @ Jacksonville, FL

#23-NC State (-26) vs. #114-East Carolina (TP=60 Odds=.825)
#25-S Carolina (-14.5) vs. #97-N Carolina (TP=56 Odds=.707) @ Charlotte, NC
#33-Syracuse (-22.5) @ #120-Liberty (TP=63 Odds=.772)
#43-Pittsburgh (-6.5) vs. #60-Virginia (TP=53 Odds=.600)
#45-Boston College (-1.5) vs. #40-Virginia Tech (TP=53 Odds=.520)

Monday, September 2, 2019
#6-Notre Dame (-19) @ #74-Louisville (TP=58 Odds=.754)

BOTTOM LINE: It looks like JHowell thinks 6 of these games are going to be blow-outs (with ACC teams winning 3 and losing 4 - one is an ACC match-up). There are also 3 virtual toss-up games... wouldn't it be good if Miami could snatch that week zero victory from the jaws of the Gators! If FSU could also flip the script on Boise State and get the upset win in that game, the ACC would be off to a fine start for the 2019 football season.

CNY's best chicken riggies: And the winners are ... (PS; Miller)

The best riggies in Central New York

While we were visiting the four finalists, our readers voted for their favorite.

And the winners are:

Judges' Choice: The Creekside Inn in Oneida.
Readers' Choice: Francesca's Cucina in downtown Syracuse.

The judges were Charlie Miller and Sunny Hernandez from syracuse.com and Chef Mary Kiernan, associate teaching professor at Syracuse University, an American Culinary Federation-certified chef de cuisine and certified professional chef.

We received about 9,000 votes from readers. Francesca's got 35 percent of the votes, Sal's got about 33 percent, Creekside got 23 percent, and Cider Mill took 9 percent.

The Criteria

We judged each finalist on the individual dish and the overall experience at the restaurant. Like all Best of CNY campaigns, we bought our own meals.

At each stop, we got three orders of riggies: one mild, one medium or regular, and one extra spicy. The three judges tried each of them.

Chef Mary Kiernan was our expert. She's a trained chef, she teaches future chefs at Syracuse University, and she's served as a judge at Utica's Riggiefest. She looked for a consistency of the sauce and a steady ratio of sauce to chicken and pasta. She also believes the pasta should be cooked al dente.
...

i would be interested to know the al dente question.. Im not a big fan of that style in most pasta offerings, usually just skip it when i come across that in a meal. do we need a poll to decide what right?
