Celebrating-Language-UN-English-Language-Day.jpg
Welcome to English Language Day!

English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN). In February 2010, the UN created six language days "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization." The days were also created "to increase awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community." The creation of the days was part of the 2010 International Mother Language Day. Besides English, there are days that honor the Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Spanish languages. Events are held at the UN Headquarters each year, and the day is celebrated at other UN locations—known as duty stations—around the world.

April 23 was chosen for the holiday's date because it is the observed birthday and death date of William Shakespeare, who is seen by many as the greatest writer of the English language. True to its name, the language originated in England. Similar in form to Frisian, Dutch, and German, it is a West Germanic language and is part of the Indo-European language family. English is known as a "world language" because it is so widely spoken; about 2 billion people—close to a third of the world's population—can speak it. It is the main language used in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some island nations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is an official language in some other countries, including South Africa, India, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Syracuse Eyes Four-Star Jalen Berger – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

Syracuse has been hot on the trail for running backs lately. The 2020 class has already picked up two Maryland based running back commits in Sean Tucker and Marlowe Wax. The Orange might not be done there though.

SU has also offered 2020 four-star back Jalen Berger. He hasn’t announced a visit or anything yet and has a slew of other offers including Alabama, Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and LSU to name a few, but Syracuse does have something on its side. Berger’s former high school teammate was none other than SU quarterback Tommy DeVito. The two four-star recruits played together at Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey back in 2016.

Berger is currently ranked as the 122nd best overall recruit in his 2020 class, according to ESPN. He’s the 9th best running back in the class. At 6-0, 187 pounds, Berger has solid speed (4.6 40-yard dash) and great vision.

There is no timetable on Berger’s decision right now and you’d have to imagine Syracuse is behind the eight ball considering who they are going up against. Plus, the backfield is filled with plenty of talent for the future and the two commits already in Berger’s class might limit interest from the New Jersey native. However, not many other schools can say they have a quarterback like DeVito and someone Berger already knows. The crazy thing is, if Berger chose SU, it would be about as big of a commitment, if not bigger, than when his former high school teammate decided to.

30 Minutes in Orange Nation | WTLA-AM (espnsyracuse.com; radio; Seth and Steve)

Steve and Seth discuss that for the first time in a while it seems like the upcoming Syracuse football season is more anticipated than the basketball season. Later, they discuss the Syracuse lacrosse season as the regular season has come to an end including if they believe the Orange exceeded expectations.

Syracuse Football: Donovan McNabb takes heat for his QB hot take (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football quarterback Donovan McNabb took a lot of heat for his recent hot take on the quarterback situation in Philadelphia.

Syracuse football fans should remember Donovan McNabb throwing fiery passes in the Carrier Dome throughout the mid-’90s. At 42-years of age, his playing days are long over, but that doesn’t mean he’s done throwing heat.

The latest hot take is towards Philadelphia, the city McNabb called his NFL home for 11 of his 13 seasons in the pros. That’s the very same franchise that selected Donovan with the second overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft out of Syracuse.

McNabb is heralded as one of the best quarterbacks in Orange history and had a very accomplished career within the city of brotherly love reaching five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance. So it’s safe to say he knows a lot about playing the quarterback position and he had a particular take about the current starting quarterback for the Eagles, Carson Wentz:

“I think in the next two years or so, (Carson Wentz) needs to find a way to get out of the second round of the playoffs. If he can’t, they should look to possibly draft another quarterback.” – Donovan McNabb on Carson’s future in Philadelphia on The Zach Gelb Show on CBS Sports Radio.

We are 8 days from the release of On the Bench: Year In Review! Today, take a look back at Syracuse Football's most successful season since 2001, capped off by the Orange's Bowl win:

Syracuse Football: Tommy DeVito could be reunited with former 4-star teammate (itlh; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team could soon reunite their quarterback Tommy DeVito and his former 4-star teammate. Here are all the details on this talented player.

A lot of great work has already been accomplished by the Syracuse football recruiting department over the last couple of weeks. But there’s still more work to be done including possibly reuniting a pair of former teammates.

We all know who the starting quarterback for the Orange is in Tommy DeVito. He’s got all the skills to be the savior for Syracuse, but he can’t do it alone he’s going to need help. Meet 2020 four-star running back Jalen Berger. Although Tommy doesn’t need to be introduced to him, they used to be teammates, per Syracuse football beat reporter Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com.

The two were teammates back in 2016 at Don Bosco Prep. Jalen is a four-star recruit and stands in at 6-foot and weighs 187 pounds.

Here are some of the analytics on him from 247 Sports:

4.6 40-yard dash
4.28 shuttle
31.30 vertical leap

His pro-player comparison is Tevin Coleman

When you look at the tale of the tape below he runs so effortlessly. While his 40-yard dash is only listed at 4.6, he appears to have game speed. Game speed is how a player runs in pads playing the game of football, which is what really counts.

Top ACC spring game performers from April 13th and 20th (stateoftheu.com; Dottavio)

Most of the ACC wrapped up spring practices by April 20th with the Hurricanes spring game in Orlando. On April 13th; UNC, Syracuse, Pitt, and Virginia Tech held their spring games while Miami held theirs on the 20th. Georgia Tech and Virginia are set to hold their spring games on April 26th and 27th, respectively.

I covered some earlier ACC spring games and their top performers here for SOTU. The ACC is a conference in flux and Miami has a real opportunity to own the Coastal if the offensive line can settle in, a quarterback can stand out, and the defense can figure out depth in the back seven.

Javonte Williams, RB, UNC

Javonte Williams was the star of the Tar Heels open scrimmage to coaches on April 6th and shined again in the spring game. Williams carried the ball six times for 51 yards (eight yards per carry) with a scrimmage opening touchdown against a Tar Heels defense that recorded 11 tackles for loss on the afternoon.

Williams is from nearby Wallace-Rose Hill High School. The former three-star prospect is five-foot-eleven, 205 pounds. In 2018, Williams averaged 5.2 yards per carry with five touchdowns. In Phil Longo’s offense he has the chance to get clutch touches, especially in the red zone.

Tommy DeVito, QB, Syracuse

Replacing Eric Dungey in Dino Baber’s offense looks to be quarterback Tommy DeVito. The six-foot-two, 211 pound DeVito was 13-for-16 passing for 178 passing yards and two touchdowns with an interception. DeVito did have a costly turnover but the offense moved the football well for both DeVito and Rex Culpepper.

UVa football: Cavs looking for a new go-to receiver for QB Perkins | UVa sports news | roanoke.com (roanoke.coml Doughty)

When last seen in game action, record-setting Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins was throwing three touchdown passes to Olamide Zaccheaus in the Belk Bowl.

While Perkins has one year of remaining eligibility, he’ll need to find another primary target.

Aside from the departed Zaccheaus, who had 12 receptions for 100 yards in the Cavaliers’ 28-0 bowl win over South Carolina, only one other receiver had more than one reception.

ACC Football Rx: Links, news and rumors - 4/23/19 (RX; HM)

Here's a trio of links from Associated Press...

From "Pass First Pitt? Panthers Believe The Big Play Is Back" by Will Graves - Apr. 13, 2019

Though Pitt reached the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game for the first time last fall behind a brawny rushing attack, it wasn't enough for Shawn Watson to keep his job as offensive coordinator. Head coach Pat Narduzzi lured Mark Whipple — whose previous stops included Massachusetts, Miami and the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers — out of semi-retirement and tasked him with bringing balance to an offense that finished next to last in the 14-team ACC in yards passing per game.

The early returns looked promising. Pickett ended six weeks of drills by completing 10 of 14 passes for 125 yards and two scores [in the Spring game]. Backup quarterbacks Jeff George Jr. and freshman Davis Beville also got the ball down the field. Seven players had at least one catch of 20 yards or more, encouraging for a group that topped over 200 yards passing just once in 2018.

Sounds like the Panthers might have a passing attack again - and that makes them dangerous!

From "Brown, Tar Heels Spend Spring Training Inexperienced QBs" by Aaron Beard

While quarterback question is obviously important for any team, it's been particularly glaring in Chapel Hill the past two seasons under former coach Larry Fedora. After Mitch Trubisky's rapid rise to become the No. 2 overall draft pick, the Tar Heels spent two seasons with injuries, inconsistency and simply poor play amid a revolving door at the QB position.

It's a big reason why Fedora's offense crashed following years of high-scoring flow, leading to his ouster and Brown's return for a second stint with the Tar Heels...

Historically, QB has been a problem for the Tar Heels.

Syracuse lawmakers approve $20M Fowler High School stadium project (PS; Mulder)

The Syracuse Common Council unanimously agreed today to borrow up to $20 million to build a sports stadium for Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler High School which has gone 10 years without usable athletic fields.

The Syracuse City School District plans to advertise Tuesday for bids which are due May 23. The district hopes to begin site work this summer.

The proposed athletic complex will include fields for football, soccer, baseball, tennis courts and new locker rooms.

The football team played its last game on the home turf in 2009. The fields were torn up in 2010 to allow the county to work on a sewer running beneath the field. The school was promised a new field in 1997, but the project has been repeatedly delayed by financial limitations and other issues. In the meantime, new turf fields have been installed at the city’s three other high schools.

The Council postponed voting on the resolution earlier this month. At a recent committee meeting some councilors expressed doubts about the project’s durability because it will be built on land with poor soil conditions that could cause the facility to sink.
