Syracuse Football: Final NFL Draft analysis, analytical breakdown of 2019 SU prospects (itlh; Esden Jr)

With the 2019 NFL Draft on the horizon, we take one final look at every draftable Syracuse football prospect. Here’s an inside look at the analytics and draft stock.

After months and months of preparation, it’s finally time for all of the former Syracuse football players to learn their NFL futures during the 2019 NFL Draft this week.

According to the experts, there are seven members of the 2018 Syracuse football squad who merit consideration in the NFL Draft later this week. That’s no guarantee that all or any will actually be drafted, but the analytics suggest that they have the best “chance”.

Although it should be noted, that even if none of these players are drafted, that doesn’t mean their NFL futures are over. Plenty of players have gone undrafted and worked their butt’s off to make an NFL roster. It’s just a little harder is all.

Speaking of, here is a look at every draftable former Syracuse football player who hopes to hear their name called during the 2019 NFL Draft. We take a deep dive into the analytics, the latest draft buzz, and who has the best chance to make an NFL roster.

Introducing Syracuse Running Back Abdul Adams – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

As we approach the Orange’s pre-season camp this summer, there’s a lot of talk about the running back position. This year’s backfield could be one of the deepest in recent Syracuse memory and one of the best units in the ACC. Moe Neal returns for his senior season, while Jarveon Howard is back after a successful sophomore campaign.

The wild card? Transfer Abdul Adams. The former Oklahoma Sooner showed off his potential in the Orange’s Camping World Bowl victory, carrying the ball eight times for 20 yards and two touchdowns. That was just a small sample size of what Adams can bring to this offense. If the backfield is going to be as elite as people think, Adams is going to be a big part of it.

What’s His Background?

Before Oklahoma, Adams was a top running back recruit in the class of 2016 at Hillside in North Carolina. The 5-foot-11 tailback was ranked as the 15th best running back in his class and the 14th highest recruit in the state of North Carolina by 247Sports. Those are really solid numbers for a four-star recruit, so it’s not hard to understand why he chose to play at Oklahoma.

Once Adams arrived at Oklahoma, he saw decent playing time right away. In the fall of ’16, he carried the ball 53 times, averaging 5.3 yards per touch. While he only had 46 carrier the following year, his yards per touch average increased to 10.2. The increase there can likely be credited to a 99 yard run that season. In ’16, his longest carry was 57 yards.

Tim Tebow and John Wildhack have a history together (PS; Mink)

Tim Tebow had a small connection to this city before he parachuted in for the summer as a member of the Syracuse Mets.

Tebow was hired at ESPN in December 2013 to serve as a college football analyst for the soon-to-launch SEC Network, and one of the key decision-makers to sign Tebow was Syracuse University athletic director John Wildhack, then an executive at ESPN.

Tebow’s broadcasting agent at CAA, Nick Khan, initiated conversations that the former Heisman Trophy winner and two-time national champion quarterback at the University of Florida was interested in moving into television.

Wildhack met with them in Los Angeles and discussed a way for one of the most accomplished athletes in SEC history to help bring credibility to the network ahead of its launch in 2014.

Tebow and Wildhack described the LA meeting as more of a casual conversation about football and the commitment ESPN was throwing at SEC Network than a formal interview evaluating his broadcasting skills.

Tebow said it made sense because of his familiarity with the SEC.

“He is 100 percent genuine. He’s just an outstanding person. Given all his background, how he dealt with the media throughout his college career, there’s no question in our mind he’d be very good in front of the camera,” Wildhack said.

All-Time Greatest NFL Draft Picks From Every ACC Team (CFN; Fiutak)

North Carolina

LB Lawrence Taylor 1981, 1st round, 2nd pick overall, New York Giants
Silver: DE Julius Peppers, 1st round, 2nd pick overall, Carolina
Bronze: LB Chris Hanburger, 18th round, 245th pick overall, Washington

The North Carolina top three are as good as almost any other college’s trio. Lawrence Taylor alone makes this group special. Arguably the greatest defensive player of all-time, the Hall of Famer is the gold standard of pass rushers.

Peppers might have gone from great to Hall of Fame special because of his longevity with Chicago and Green Bay, but he was outstanding for Carolina, too, while Hanburger turned out to be okay for an 18th round pick – the four-time All-Pro played 14 years for Washington on the way to Canton.

North Carolina State

QB Phil Rivers 2004, 1st round, 4th pick overall, New York Giants*
Silver: WR Torry Holt, 1999, 1st round, 6th pick overall, St. Louis Rams
Bronze: QB Roman Gabriel, 1962, 1st round, 2nd pick overall, Los Angeles Rams

Just like Eli Manning for Ole Miss, Phil Rivers gets credit for being “drafted” by the Chargers because of the draft day trade. Rivers is a first ballot Hall of Famer, but Roman Gabriel isn’t in despite putting up huge numbers in his 16-year career. In his 11 years with Los Angeles, Gabriel threw for over 22,000 yards and was a 1969 All-Pro.

Torry Holt is an all-timer after making 869 catches for 12,660 yards and 74 touchdowns for the Greatest Show On Turf Rams, going to seven Pro Bowls and being named a 2003 All-Pro.

Pitt

QB Dan Marino 1983, 1st round, 27th pick overall, Miami
Silver: RB Tony Dorsett, 1977, 1st round, 1st pick overall, Dallas
Bronze: DE Chris Doleman, 1985, 1st round, 4th pick overall, Minnesota

If you’re not in the Hall of Fame, you need not apply for the top three Pitt draft picks of all-time.

Darrelle Revis will end up coming close to getting a yellow jacket, and he didn’t make the cut.

Curtis Martin has a bust in Canton, and Rickey Jackson and Mike Ditka do, too. But they’re not quite strong enough.

How good do you have to be to make the Pitt top three? Larry Fitzgerald, Mark May, Bill Fralic, Jimbo Covert and Russ Grimm aren’t there, and Aaron Donald isn’t even close … yet.

Dan Marino is the obvious top choice, but Chris Doleman wasn’t all that far off with 96.5 of his career 150.5 sacks coming with Minnesota. If you want to argue that Tony Dorsett could be Pitt’s greatest draft pick – he has a Super Bowl ring – you might be right.

Syracuse

RB Jim Brown 1957, 1st round, 6th pick overall, Cleveland
Silver: WR Marvin Harrison, 1999, 1st round, 19th pick overall, Indianapolis
Bronze: C Jim Ringo, 1953, 7th round, 79th pick overall, Green Bay

Jim Brown might be the greatest player in NFL history. That’s a nice place to start, earning eight All-Pro nods in his nine years before exiting as the league’s all-time leading rusher.

Jim Ringo is a Hall of Famer, being named to six All-Pro teams as the anchor of the Green Bay line, while Marvin Harrison is one of the most productive receivers of all-time.

Donovan McNabb, Art Monk, Dwight Freeney, Larry Czonka, Floyd Little, and Walt Sweeney are just a few of the other Syracuse greats who’d make the cut for just about anyone else.

Arizona Cardinals 7-round mock draft, ACC only edition (raisingzona.com; Hovis)

254 JAMAL CUSTIS

WR Syracuse

Syracuse Orange

Jamal Custis is an interesting prospect that can be taken in the later rounds and has a lot of potential to be a solid receiver in the league. He stands at 6-foot-4 and runs a very good at 4.5 40-yard speed for his height allowing him to get downfield with easy and also win jump balls. Has big hands and the ability to catch in traffic makes him a great late round selection with value.

Custis has great deep ball abilities, according to the Pro Football Focus, he caught 54.8% of the deep ball passes thrown catching 17 being ranked third in the nation. He has long strides and speed to go along with those big hands making him a go route weapon. He’s not just a straight line receiver for his catch radius is impressive and showed a lot of spark at Syracuse.

Jamal Custis only has one year of production and it was his single season, so many wonder can the receiver keep it up? He also doesn’t have many routes in his route tree making him somewhat predictable on film and when being covered. Sometimes is too upright and needs to be coached to improve the overall art of his routes because the ability and physic are already there.

6 Miami Hurricanes That I Expect to Dominate in 2019 (fanbuzz.com; Picaro)

With the program’s spring game done and passed, the Miami Hurricanes football team had tons of names that stood out. Many were the ones everyone expected, but others shined maybe earlier than we thought.

There are quite a few players who have me excited and expecting a big season. Players like linebacker Shaq Quarterman and wide receiver Jeff Thomas are obviously expected to have great seasons because of their last few, but there are some who have an opportunity to create a name for themselves on a national stage.

ACC Football Rx: Rule Changes for 2019 (RX; HM)

From the NCAA: Rule changes for 2019

There are several rule changes, all meant to improve player safety...

Targeting protocols approved for football

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel during a conference call Monday approved two adjustments to targeting rules:

1. Beginning in the fall in games using video review, instant replay officials will be directed to examine all aspects of the play and either (a) confirm the targeting foul when all elements of targeting are present, or (b) overturn the targeting foul. There will no longer be an option for letting the call on the field “stand”.

2. The panel also approved instituting a progressive penalty for targeting. Players who commit three targeting fouls in the same season are subject to a one-game suspension.

Blind-side blocks:

Players will not be allowed to deliver a blind-side block by attacking an opponent with forcible contact. It will be a personal foul with a 15-yard penalty. If the block also includes the elements of targeting, it will be a blind-side block with targeting.

Kickoff Rule Change:

the two-man wedge formation is now illegal on all kickoffs.

ACC Football Rx: Lessons from the Pac-12 Mess (RX; HM)

Lessons from the Pac-12 Mess

The Pac-12 saga continues as the leaders of that conference just can't seem to get out of their own way. Recently they made the statement that the objective of the Pac-12 Network wasn't to make money... news to some Pac-12 schools, perhaps?

Here are some clips from what SBNation wrote about the Pac-12 (the italics and bold are mine):

Money is great, but good leadership would help the Pac-12 more

Selling off a portion of your allegedly amateur athletic enterprise might not be the answer by Matt Brown@MattSBN Apr 17, 2019

It’s been a rough few years for the Pac-12. To address this, commissioner Larry Scott is trying to sell an equity stake in the league’s media rights for $750 million... an extra $750 million can solve a lot of problems. But are the Pac-12’s the kind that can be solved by cash?

For one thing, $750 million can’t change the Pac-12’s geography...

More importantly, money alone won’t get you better school-level leadership...

RE: All-Time Greatest NFL Draft Picks From Every ACC Team...
No argument with VT's top 2 (but surely there's a DB or WR deserving of 3rd?)

Virginia Tech
DE Bruce Smith
1985, 1st round, 1st pick overall, Buffalo
Silver: QB Michael Vick, 2001, 1st round, 1st pick overall, Atlanta
Bronze: OT Duane Brown, 2008, 1st round, 26h pick overall, Houston

Nothing against Brown, but what about CB DeAngelo Hall or WR Antonio Freeman? Maybe they are 3rd and 4th?
