Welcome to May Day!

May Day is a spring holiday in many cultures, and a national holiday in many European countries. It stemmed from ancient celebrations which included Floralia, a Roman festival honoring the flower goddess Flora; Walpurgis Night, which was celebrated by Germanic countries; Beltane, a Gaelic holiday; and Anthesteria, a Greek festival. In some European pagan cultures, it was seen as the first day of summer, while the summer solstice was celebrated as Midsummer. Celebrants would get up early and gather flowers and branches to decorate their houses with.

As Europe became more Christianized, May Day became more of a secular celebration. It eventually spread to North America as well. Celebrations have included dancing around a maypole and crowning a May Queen. Many towns in the United Kingdom still crown a May Queen. The making of May garlands was done, and some still do this today. Traditionally, children would go door to door and beg while wearing the garlands. Many people also washed their faces with May dew, believing that doing so would bring back beauty. For a time, the giving of May baskets was popular. These small baskets of flowers or sweets were left anonymously on the doorsteps of neighbors, and then the doorbell was rung and the giver would run away. This has been done less and less since the late twentieth century.

Syracuse football graphic reveals length of Dino Babers’ new contract (PS; Mink)

When Syracuse University announced in December that football coach Dino Babers accepted a long-term contract extension, it gave no indication how long that meant.

A new recruiting graphic surfaced Tuesday and provided a date.

Babers’ contract runs through the 2024 season.

There’s little reason to question the accuracy of the graphic, which includes other achievements from last season, including winning 10 games for the first time since 2001, having 11 players earn All-ACC recognition and Babers being named co-ACC coach of the year by the Associated Press.

The graphic also says the university is spending $128 million on the Carrier Dome renovation, $10 million more than the figure announced last year for improvements such as a permanent roof, a vertically hung scoreboard and air conditioning.

Syracuse’s Recent Struggles on Draft Day – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Historically, Syracuse has a rich tradition in the NFL Draft. Having multiple players picked in the draft was the standard for the Orange prior to the 2015 season. Recently, SU has had three players drafted in the past four seasons. There’s no doubt that’s a statistic that head coach Dino Babers is looking to improve. Defensive lineman Chris Slayton was the only Orange player selected this season (New York Giants: round 7, pick 31).

SU has had quite a few first round picks over the years. Since 1999, the list includes quarterback Donovan McNabb, linebacker Kieth Bulluck, defensive back Will Allen, defensive end Dwight Freeney, defensive end Chandler Jones, offensive lineman Justin Pugh. Back before the McNabb days, 15 Syracuse players were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. People often speak of the strong history of SU Football and these stats back that up. The Orange were regularly pumping out first round picks back in the golden days.

It’s Clemson, then everyone else in the ACC (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

for gbo

There are two things we can count on when it comes to the upcoming football season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson is going to be great again and Louisville is not. What’s in between, no one knows.

Without a doubt Clemson is by far the class of the league. The Tigers are so far ahead of everyone in the conference right now, it might be a while before anyone can truly step up and challenge them.

I know Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said last week the ACC is a good conference and it does not get the respect it deserves. That might be true, but right now the Tigers are in a class by themselves when it comes to comparing them with their ACC counterparts.

That does not mean the ACC is a bad conference. I think the conference has proven itself well for the most part against other the Power 5 conferences throughout the years. However, I don’t see anyone in the league catching up with the Tigers at the moment.

The Willie Taggert era did not get off to a good start at Florida State. The Seminoles had their first losing season since 1976 and did not make a bowl game for the first time since 1981, an NCAA record that came to an end. Taggert has since replaced his offensive coordinator with Kendal Briles to try and provide a spark.

Last year, Syracuse had its best season in years going 10-3 and finishing second behind Clemson in the Atlantic Division at 6-2. Yes, the Orange does get Clemson at home, the only ACC game the Tigers have lost the last two seasons.

However, Eric Dungy will not be so easy to replace at quarterback. He is the one who gave Clemson the most fits the last two years. The defense also lost some key pieces and let’s face it the depth at Syracuse is not exactly built like Clemson’s.

Games 1 – 5 | Games 6 – 10 | Games 16 – 20 | Games 21 – 25 | Games 26 – 30

11. #16 Georgia Tech 30 #9 Georgia 24 – November 29, 2014

Georgia entered this week as a darkhorse to make the college football playoff. Missouri winning the SEC East effectively ended the Bulldogs playoff chances, but you can see how well UGA was regarded. Georgia Tech hadn’t beat Georgia since 2008, but this win gave the Yellow Jackets a chance at a truly great season. Add in the fact the ACC went 4-0 against the SEC in rivalry games, with this being the crowning jewel of that weekend and this win just missed our top 10 best OOC wins of the decade.

12. Virginia Tech 35 #8 Ohio State 21 – September 6, 2014

Ohio State lost one game in 2014 on their way to the National Title and it was at home to the Virginia Tech Hokies. This game is a little lower on the list because Virginia Tech couldn’t use it to propel itself to a great season. It was more of a singular event than some of the other games. That said we were again able to see the genius of Bud Foster as a defensive coordinator. Foster called a masterpiece of a game, and the Buckeyes had no answer. This result very nearly kept Ohio State out of the college football playoff.

13. #8 Clemson 38 #5 Georgia 35 – August 31, 2013

Georgia entered this game as a pre-season national title contender. Clemson was looking to validate a Chick Fila Bowl win over LSU, and beat a 2nd straight top 10 SEC team. The Tigers won this game, and around the country people knew the Tigers were building something. The win helped the Tigers eventually get to #3 in the country setting up one of the most anticipated ACC games ever when they faced fellow top 5 team Florida State. It was the first time ever a non-SEC team had beat back to back top 10 SEC teams.

14. #2 Florida State 31 #5 Notre Dame 27 – October 19, 2014

Notre Dame’s late season swoon takes a little luster off this battle, but at the time it was one of the biggest games of the 2014 season. It turned out to be the 2nd highest rated college football game of the regular season, and kept Florida State in the thick of the national title chase. It was a tremendous game that wasn’t decided until the final seconds, as the entire nation watched.

15. #12 Clemson 24 #6 Notre Dame 22 – October 3, 2015

This game laid the groundwork for Clemson’s 2015 National Title appearance run. This game had it all – National TV, Prime-Time, Gameday and an epic game. It was the BYOG (Bring Your Own Guts) game as Dabo Swinney called it. Again the Irish slipped down the stretch losing their final 2 games, but without this high-profile win Clemson probably doesn’t make the college football playoffs. This is the first of two classic ACC Games that went into the final seconds with Notre Dame.

New Fenway Park Bowl (ACC vs. AAC) (RX; HM)

New Fenway Park Bowl (ACC vs. AAC)

Of course this is not getting rave reviews among ACC fans. After all, there are plenty of cons:
- It's outdoors, in Winter, in Boston
- That means it's cold
- It's played in a baseball stadium
- The opponent is from the American Athletic Conference.
- Did I mention it's cold?
But seriously, let's talk about this bowl.

Temperature.
Hold up though. Remember when the ACC and the Big Ten floated the idea of playing a bowl game at Wrigley Field in Chicago? Let's compare typical low/high temperatures for bowl week:
Fenway Park, Boston: 23/36
Wrigley Field, Chicago: 17/32

‘The Simpsons’ writer from CNY: ‘I’m proud’ of Upstate NY episode (exclusive) (PS; Herbert)

A Central New York native who’s worked on “The Simpsons” for the past two decades especially enjoyed the show’s most recent episode mocking Upstate New York.

“I love Upstate New York,” writer-producer John Frink told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard in a phone interview.
“I’m very proud we could showcase some of Upstate New York.”

Frink grew up near Utica in Whitesboro and graduated from Oriskany Central School and Herkimer County Community College. He’s slipped in several references to the region over the years, though Moe’s Tavern -- rumored to share its name with a long-ago bar in Oriskany -- has been a part of the Fox animated TV show since its first season a decade earlier.

“The Simpsons” drew a mix of laughter and criticisms Sunday night when the cartoon family took a trip to Niagara Falls and Lisa ended up in Canada (“America’s Ned Flanders to the north”) where she’s granted political asylum in Canada against her parents’ wishes. The episode, titled “D’oh Canada,” was written by longtime “The Simpsons” consulting producer and Ontario native Tim Long with his wife Miranda Thompson, though Frink is part of the writers’ room that worked on it.

Good find. Those revenue estimates are very conservative.
