Welcome to World Bee Day!

This one is for you, rrlbees!

Bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities.

Pollinators allow many plants, including many food crops, to reproduce. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity - a cornerstone of the Sustainable Development Goals. They also serve as sentinels for emergent environmental risks, signaling the health of local ecosystems.

Invasive insects, pesticides, land-use change and monocropping practices may reduce available nutrients and pose threats to bee colonies.

To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.

Why this date?
20 May coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia and praised the bees for their ability to work so hard, while needing so little attention.

How Syracuse Could Miss Out on ESPN’s GameDay – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

As if there already wasn’t enough hype in Central New York surrounding Syracuse’s upcoming football season, ESPN has announced the start time for three of the Orange’s 12 games this fall. The headliner is Syracuse hosting Clemson on Sep. 14 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. This is the first time the Carrier Dome will host ESPN’s marquee game of the week.

SCHEDULE ALERT
It's official! Our Sept. 14 home opener vs. Clemson will be played in primetime!

— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) May 15, 2019

Outside of that, the Orange add two games on ESPN: 8 p.m. on Oct. 10 at NC State, followed by a 7 p.m. start on Oct. 18 inside the Dome against Pittsburgh. Oddly enough, Syracuse will play twice in primetime on ESPN in eight days without playing a game on a Saturday.

Rightfully so, the announcement of the Clemson game being featured on Saturday Night Football has a lot of fans optimistic about Syracuse landing ESPN’s College GameDay for the week three tilt. That’s far from a guarantee. Over the years, the worldwide leader has become more and more willing to send the GameDay crew to a game that it isn’t covering. For example, Lee Corso and the crew opened last season in South Bend for Notre Dame and Michigan. NBC broadcast the game.

Why is this relevant? Just because Syracuse and Clemson are playing in ABC’s primetime window doesn’t mean GameDay is a lock to make its first ever appearance in the Salt City. Personally, I don’t see how the program doesn’t follow the game if both teams are 2-0. Clemson starts the season with Georgia Tech and Texas A&M, both at home. While the Aggies may push the Tigers to the limit, there’s no reason to believe the defending national champions won’t pick up those early season wins.

Syracuse Football: SU prioritizing stud Canadian QB Christian Veilleux (itlh; Carey)

The Syracuse football team is doing their due diligence on the recruiting trail. Here’s why they’ve turned up the heat for a Canadian gunslinger.

The Syracuse football squad is looking for their stud quarterback recruit in the class of 2020. The Orange were hot on the trail of Tyler Van Dyke, until a recent offer from Miami, saw him commit to “The U.”

Now the Orange is reportedly after Christian Veilleux, a prospect in the class of 2021. However, Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey reported that Veilleux is being recruited by Syracuse as a 2020 prospect, someone who could reclassify.

As a prospect in the class of 2021, the Canisius High School star has racked up some big-time offers. The likes of Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia have all reached out to Veilleux and offered him.

The Ontario, Canada native plays his high school football in Buffalo, at Canisius High School about two hours away from the Syracuse campus. Prior to Canisius, he went to school in Canada. It’s a good sign and advantage for Syracuse that Veilleux plays so close to campus. He received an offer from Babers and staff after a visit to campus in early April.

Sunshine State Wide Receiver Sets Syracuse Official Visit (247sports.com; McAllister)

One of the top wide receivers in the talent rich state of Florida has set an official visit date to Syracuse, and it is coming up soon. Miami (Fla.) Palmetto standout Kentron Poitier will officially visit Syracuse from June 20th through June 22nd, he tells CuseNation.com. Poitier is one of Syracuse's top targets in the 2020 class regardless of position. He has been on campus before, taking an unofficial visit on April 13th.

Poitier told 247Sports in April that Syracuse was one of his top schools at the time, and the scheduling of an official is a message that nothing has changed. He said he likes his primary recruiter, Nick Monroe, and how the offense throws the ball deep a lot. Poitier is rated a three star prospect by 247Sports and is ranked as the 110th best player at his position.

His offer list is quite impressive. In addition to Syracuse, he holds scholarship opportunities from Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Virginia and several others. Syracuse's biggest competition for Poitier may be Auburn and Florida State, but the Orange will have a chance to make a big impression during the official visit.

As a junior, Poitier had 29 receptions for 538 yards and eight touchdowns. That is a stellar 18.6 yards per catch. Poitier is a superb athlete who also stars for Miami Palmetto's basketball team. As a sophomore, Poitier averaged 14.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game according to MaxPreps. He shot 64% from the floor and 37% from three point range as well.

Syracuse Football: ACC Network reveals 3 SU players to watch in 2019 (itlh; Esden Jr)

The ACC Digital Network revealed three Syracuse football players we should have our eyes on in 2019. Here’s why we couldn’t agree more.

With so many Syracuse football players gone through graduation, the NFL Draft, or both there are a lot of spots to fill.

While on one hand that can be intimidating, on the other hand, that provides a lot of opportunity for some of the lesser named players to earn spots on the Orange for 2019 and the future.

SU has a lot to prove in 2019 after the success they had in 2018. Despite some players leaving there is still a ton of unearthed talent on this Orange roster.

The ACC Digital Network revealed three key Syracuse football players to watch out for in 2019 on their YouTube channel:

ACCN Battle for Carriage 2019 (RX; HM)

How you can help get ACCN in your area

Florida State fans probably noticed when the first three weeks of the ACCN football schedule was announced that the Seminoles had not one but two games set to appear on the soon-to-be-launched network. That is likely not by accident, any more than having the national champion Clemson Tigers host the first ACCN football game ever on opening Thursday (a night the Tigers rarely play on).

What's going on here? Simple. Several of the major television providers in the ACC footprint - in particular Comcast, Charter/Spectrum and Dish Network, which also not coincidentally are the biggest cable providers in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina - have not yet agreed to carry the ACCN. Those carriers are huge and very important to the financial success of the new network. In fact, they are so important that ESPN put Georgia Tech vs. Clemson, a pair of Florida State games and a pair of Miami games onto the ACC network in the first 3 weeks.

Keep in mind that ESPN could have put those games on one of their own networks (they own the rights after all). Apparently, ESPN felt it was time to ramp up the pressure.

ESPN Executive Vice President Burke Magnus expressed confidence that deals will be reached with those major carriers - but that they could stretch out until shortly before the season begins. From "Swofford Wraps ACC Meetings" on Warchant:

Magnus went through a similar process with the launch of the highly successful SEC Network... "If you’ve followed other such circumstances, I think you all know that [these type of negotiations] usually comes down to the bitter end in terms of timing. But we feel really confident..."

Really, should we expect less? Even if these cable companies want to add the ACC Network right away, they have to give the appearance to their customers that they are trying to control costs!

Magnus delivered a similar message to ACC athletics directors and staff members during last week's ACC spring meetings. He also said that the conference is 'highly attractive to sponsors and consumers' because of its recent track record - winning national championship in football (Clemson) and men's basketball (Virginia) just last season.

Living Alumni - 2018 (RX; HM)

Often the easiest pool of fans to draw from are alumni. Which ACC schools have the most living alumni? Which have the least? Here are estimates provided by the Virginia Tech Hokie Club:

Team Living Alumni Enrollment
Florida State 315,425 32,812
Pitt 306,821 34,934
North Carolina 296,046 29,469
Syracuse 251,067 22,484
Virginia Tech 238,169 30,598
Virginia 213,000 21,985
NC State 205,400 34,015
Boston College 168,651 14,125
Miami 168,000 17,003
Duke 157,017 15,192
Louisville 138,340 22,640
Clemson 132,198 23,406
Georgia Tech 130,000 26,839
Notre Dame 127,553 8,624
Wake Forest 67,065 7,591

source1: Virginia Tech Sportswar article: Hokie Club among fastest-growing fundraisers in ACC
source2: Google enrollment at each ACC university.

The source article addresses percent of donors - which is an interesting topic in itself - but I'm going to focus on numbers of living alumni instead. For example, why is it that most schools have roughly 10X as many living alumni as the enrollment, but Notre Dame has nearly 15X as many? Do Fighting Irish grads live 1.5X longer than everyone else? No, that's not very likely! Instead, this probably indicates that Notre Dame had more students (relative to the other ACC schools) in the past.

Enrollment changes over time, which explains why Clemson only has 5.6X as many living alumni as current students - in the past, Clemson was much smaller than it is today.

ACC Sports Networks - 2019

When we heard about the launch of the ACC network in the fall of 2019, I think most of us were under the impression that all live ACC sporting events would be carried by either the ACCN or an ESPN network, with maybe some overflow streaming on ACC Network Extra (ACCNE). However, the ACC world is bigger and stranger than we thought.

Of course there's ABC, ESPN and ESPN2. These are your tier 1 games. Think Miami vs Florida, Boise vs FSU, or Clemson at Syracuse. A few games which are tier 1b end up on ESPNU.

Next, we will now have the ACCN. This will consist mostly of tier 2 games which used to be on Raycom - with a few tier 1 games sprinkled in strategically to promote distribution (think GA Tech at Clemson or Notre Dame at Duke).

We recently learned that the contract with the RSNs - which runs through 2026-27 - will be allowed to run its course.

Finally, a few football and basketball games (and probably lots of Olympic sports) will fall to ACCNE.

All that means that you could potentially have up to 7 events televised at the same time - though that seems very unlikely.

...

Just a quick thought - 5/17/19 (RX; HM)

I learned something important about the 2019 season: the ACC RSN games (i.e. the ones on the former Fox RSNs) are not coming to an immediate end. According to Matt Sarzniak:

Heard back from Kevin Best at the ACC. Says the RSN package for the ACC will remain in place. 17 football, 43 men's basketball, 36 women's basketball games.
— Matt Sarzyniak (mattsarz) May 16, 2019

That's a fairly big deal - even more/better exposure for ACC football and basketball. More to come soon.

Miami football has four of ACC’s top 25 2020 NFL Draft prospects (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Manny Diaz has turned out of the best defenses in college football during his three seasons as the Miami football team’s defensive coordinator. As Diaz ascends to head coach several Hurricanes defensive players are ranked among the ACC’s best NFL prospects.

Offseason rankings for the Miami football players returning for the 2019 season have been varied in the rankings for their prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft. Rising senior linebacker Shaq Quarterman has been on most national lists of the best prospects for the NFL Draft. Some lists have no Hurricanes players in the top 50.

The 2020 NFL Draft will be three years since a Miami football player was selected in the first round. You have to go back a year further for the last time a Miami Hurricanes defensive player was selected in the first round. In time Diaz will likely change that. Quarterman is the only player that could be a first-round pick in 2020.

In their rankings for the 2020 NFL Draft, Athlon Sports does not have any Miami Hurricanes in the top 50 prospects. Athlon further broke down the rankings by the best prospects by conference. Four Miami defensive players were among Athlon’s “Top 25 ACC 2020 NFL Draft Prospects to Watch.”

Cornerback Trajan Bandy, defensive end Jonathan Garvin, linebacker Michael Pinckney and Quarterman were all profile by Athlon. Pinckney and Quarterman will be seniors in 2019. Bandy and Garvin are entering their true junior season and are eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The best wings in Syracuse: See the winning wing at Inner Harbor Wing Fest competition (PS; Pucci)

In a town where chicken wings are serious business, one Syracuse restaurant took home the title as the best wing at the second annual Inner Harbor Wing Fest.

Ten area restaurants, bars and caterers competed in the competition Saturday—part of the two-day festival that drew more than 10,000 people to the city’s Inner Harbor.

Peppino’s Pizzeria was named the victor with its Sweet with Heat wings, a jerk dry-rubbed wing covered with an apricot and sweet chili glaze.

Shifty’s Bar and Grill (Syracuse), Pizza Man (Baldwinsville) and Wings Over Syracuse tied for second.

The 12-person judging panel included former Syracuse football players Dan Conley and James Mungro; former Syracuse basketball player and current Liverpool High School coach Ryan Blackwell; Syracuse Mets general manager Jason Smorol; Syracuse Mets manager Tony DeFrancesco; Syracuse Mets pitcher Ryan O’Rourke; David Duerr, of Empower Federal Credit Union; musician TJ Sacco; Niko Tamurian, of CNY Central; Lacey Leonardi, of Spectrum News and syracuse.com’s Jacob Pucci and Charlie Miller.

Saltine Warrior was the winner in 2018 at the inaugural Inner Harbor Wing Fest.

Their enrollment used to be smaller and increased in recent decades.
