Welcome to World Crohn's and Colitis Day!

The first annual World Crohn's and Colitis Day (WCCD) was celebrated on May 23, 2007. The event was created by Josh Golder and recognized by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, as well as by people from around the world. Josh is a prominent figure and activist in the Crohn's and Colitis community (who himself has Crohn's disease), who directed and produced the internationally known, community-wide movie, "True Guts: Struggle and Triumph over Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis" (which is more commonly known as "True Guts"). Josh created WCCD as a way to bring people affected by either disease together, as well as friends and family members of those individuals, and even those who knew nothing about either disease in order to increase awareness of them.

Crohn’s Disease

Named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn, who first described the disease in 1932 along with colleagues Dr. Leon Ginzburg and Dr. Gordon D. Oppenheimer, Crohn’s disease belongs to a group of conditions known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract.

Crohn’s most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (the ileum) and the beginning of the colon, but it may affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is limited to the colon, also called the large intestine.

Crohn’s disease can also affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall, while ulcerative colitis only involves the innermost lining of the colon. Finally, in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation of the intestine can “skip”-- leaving normal areas in between patches of diseased intestine. In ulcerative colitis this does not occur.

Syracuse Football: Preseason All-American honors for several SU stars (itlh; Esden Jr)

Several Syracuse football players received preseason All-American honors this week. Here are all the highlights and what it all means.

One of the biggest honors that can be bestowed on a team is “All-American” status which represents the elite of the elite. Syracuse football witnessed two of their stars receive this recognition from the folks over at Athlon Sports:

Andre Szmyt, K, sophomore
Not only was voted a preseason All-American but received first-team honors at that.
Andre Cisco, DB, sophomore
While the “other” Andre on the team received third-team All-American honors after leading all of college football in interceptions.
But it’s not just about the quality, it’s also about the quantity. “Syracuse was second to the Clemson Tigers (14) with 11 selections Athlon’s Preseason All-ACC Team,” per the official press release.

On top of the Andre brothers, three other members of the Orange also received first-team honors for the All-ACC team:

Alton Robinson, DE, senior
Last season reached the double-digit sack barrier (10 sacks). There are high expectations for him this season with Alton recently being labeled one of the top 2020 senior bowl targets by Executive Director Jim Nagy on social media.
Sterling Hofrichter, P, senior
SU has had a lot of success with their special teamers both collegiately and in the NFL. Hofrichter appears to be another great candidate to continue that legacy.

Sean Riley, WR, senior
Sean had a career-year by all metrics in 2018 and he looks on pace to shatter those numbers in 2019, apparently, Athlon Sports agrees.
Per the SU press release, “Riley made the first team as the squad’s punt returner. He was also voted to the second team as an all-purpose player.”

Orange Watch: The rich history between Syracuse football and the New York Giants - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Brad should have mentioned Joe Alexander and his role with the Giants in the earliest days of the franchise...

Item: Organized Team Activities (OTAs) got underway for the New York Giants Monday at their New Jersey practice facility. While all eyes are on the beginning of the quarterback cross-over era involving Eli Manning and Daniel Jones (Syracuse misses Jones by a season at Duke when the Orange play in Durham Nov. 16), a couple of ex-Syracuse standouts will be looking to turn heads during the 10 scheduled sessions, the latest ex-Orange players looking to make an NFL mark with Big Blue.

Did you know that the first player ever drafted out of Syracuse into the NFL went to the New York Giants?

In the 1936 draft held in Philadelphia, or technically the Player Selection Meeting as it was known in its origin, offensive guard Ed Jontos was chosen in the fifth round by the Giants. Jontos never played in the NFL, spending the ‘36 season as a first-year assistant coach to former Orangemen player and double Hall of Famer Vic Hanson, who concluded his seventh and final season as a head coach that year.

After Jontos, the Giants drafted nine other Syracuse players up to the Dome era, highlighted by selecting four members of the 1959 national championship team over three drafts between 1960-62.

Since Joe Morris electrified the still-Dome record crowd of 50, 564 in the building’s first football game in 1980 with a 94 yard kickoff return for a touchdown among four total TDs in the 36-24 win over Miami-Ohio, and was subsequently drafted by the Giants in the second round in 1982, there has been a noteworthy SU connection to the NYG, including Super Bowl Championships.

Virginia Tech football: The countdown begins Friday (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

We’ve reached a point in the year where there isn’t much going on in college sports. Baseball is wrapping up, spring practice for football is in the rearview mirror and the only basketball talk is about recruiting.

Well, as we near Memorial Day and the calendar turning to June, we realize football season is just over two months away at that point. So, we decided it is never too early to start looking ahead to football season and beginning tomorrow, Thursday, May 24, we will officially be 99 days away from the beginning of the 2019 college football season.

On that day, the Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College in the season opener.

Starting Thursday, over the next few months, we will do our best to give you a reminder of how many days it is until August 31. This isn’t just any countdown, though, as each day we will give you a former Hokie great by his number at Virginia Tech, for our countdown. For instance, if there is one day until the beginning of the season, we will use the number one and that player could be Macho Harris.

Xavier Restrepo, Rising 2020 Wide Receiver, Announces Commitment (thespun.com; Holleran)

One of the fastest-rising wide receivers in the 2020 recruiting class has announced his college commitment.

Xavier Restrepo, a speedy wide receiver out of Deerfield Beach, Florida, has scholarship offers from Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Oregon and Texas, among other programs.

The slot wide receiver will be playing his college football in the ACC, though.

Restrepo has announced his commitment to Miami.

He announced his decision on Twitter.

New Miami coach Manny Diaz winning over fans, recruits with social media posts (sun-sentinel.com; Murschel)

Miami athletics director Blake James credits his new coach Manny Diaz for his innovative use of social media even if sometimes he doesn’t understand it.

Diaz’s use of eye-catching memes, funny GIFS and hashtags like #TNM — The New Miami — are used primarily to catch the attention of 18-to-20 year-old blue chip recruits, but the message has also resonated with Hurricanes fans, alumni and even the occasional UM board of trustee member.

“I think everyone recognizes he is a master with social media,” James said during ACC spring meetings. “I see him come up with something new and I’ll get donors or Board of Trustee members calling me going, ‘What does that mean? What’s Manny tweeting about? What is it?' He’s just created a lot of excitement. He’s a great communicator.

“I’ll be honest, the first time I saw the #TNM, I had to quickly text my communications guy and ask, ‘What’s #TNM? That’s what he told me was The New Miami,’” James said with a chuckle. “I don’t always know.”

In a digital age where coaches are more willing to give up control of their Twitter or Facebook accounts to members of the communications department, the 45-year-old Diaz handles all of his own social media posts.

Louisville football: 5 Cardinals to buy stock in this offseason (bigredlouie.com; Stengel)

Five Cardinals whose stock is rising this offseason – with possibilities of yielding big returns for Louisville football.
Ask any Louisville football fan, and you might hear similar answers all around:

There’s more talent on Louisville’s roster than a 2-10 team.

That response is one not made purely out of optimism, but fact.

Rare is an understatement for a team majorly comprised of 3 and 4-star athletes with a consistent track record of success – suddenly crashing and stumbling into a two-win season.

With an even tougher schedule slated for Louisville’s 2019 season, there is a realistic chance that the Cards still might not make a bowl game – while also showing overall improvement.

Every major rebuild requires patience. Patience from the fans, the staff, and even the players. However, every major rebuild also comes with new opportunities for players to become key roleplayers in the next chapter of Louisville’s program. Based on the effort level and overall results from last season, there are plenty of opportunities for players to have ‘breakout seasons’.

With nowhere to go but up – let’s take a look at five Cardinals that every Louisville fan should be buying stock in this offseason.

BC Football Recruiting: Eagles Land Commitment From WR Taji Johnson and WR Luke Floriea (bcinterruption.com; Black)

The Boston College Eagles football team had a busy weekend as they landed two more recruits for the upcoming class of 2020. The first commit was Taji Johnson a 6’3 wide receiver from Marietta, Georgia:

C O M M I T T E D #DecideToFly #WeAreBC pic.twitter.com/MxZrYbOPKR

— Taji Johnson (@Taji_Johnson8) May 17, 2019
Johnson a tall receiver at 6’3 (who yes committed to #BCU), held offers from Oregon, Syracuse Orange, and a long list of MAC schools including Buffalo Buffalo, Akron and Central Michigan. The 3* receiver, capped off his exciting weekend by grabbing 7 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns in his high school’s spring game. BC has been in need of big receivers who can go up and get the ball, and Johnson could be that answer.

The second recruit BC landed was another receiver, Luke Floriea out of Mentor, Ohio. A smaller wide out at 5’11, Floriea held offers from UMass, and a host of MAC schools. Unlike Johnson the 2* wide out probably projects to be more of a slot receiver. He’s a bit on the smaller side now, but if adds some weight he could fit in fine with this offense.

2018's Good Wins/Bad Losses (RX; HM)

2018's Good Wins/Bad Losses
scale

Let me start by saying that the way college football games are typically scheduled, a lot of them are either meaningless to win (e.g. Power 5 team vs. G5 or FCS) or no big deal to lose (e.g. a P5-vs-P5 contest). That means you can really ignore most results and just focus on the games that made a difference. For the ACC in 2018, that boiled down to just 13 games:

The Good Wins (ACC vs P5).
Clemson 28, Texas AM 26
Clemson 56, S Carolina 35
Clemson 30, Notre Dame 3
Clemson 44, Alabama 16
Duke 21, Northwestern 7
Duke 40, Baylor 27
Syracuse 34, W Virginia 18
Virginia 28, S Carolina 0

Anybody notice a pattern there? Of the 8 P5 non-conference wins for the ACC, the Clemson Tigers produced 4 of them - half! The other half came from Duke (2), UVA (1) and Syracuse (1).

The Bad Losses (ACC vs G5).
N Carolina 19, E Carolina 41
Ga Tech 38, S Florida 49
Pitt 14, UCF 45
Va Tech 35, Old Dominion 49
Va Tech 31, Cincinnati 35

Wildhack on ACCN Content (RX; HM)

Syracuse AD John Wildhack gave some additional insight into what we should expect from ACC Network content

Here are some of the highlights:

We SHOULD expect to see during football season:
an ACC college football preview show each Friday.

Most marquee football games will air on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, with the ACC Network taking the next games in the pecking order; however, the ACC and ESPN will likely continue to put a handful of attractive games on ACC Network.
Soccer matches on Sundays; in fact, pretty much constant live sports Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
ACC Network Extra will still exist for overflow and non-revenue sports.

The network is making an effort to hire ACC alumni and well-known figures for on-air talent. Those already announced by ESPN are football analysts
Mark Richt (Miami)
Eric Wood (Louisville)
Mark Herzlich (Boston College)
Roddy Jones (Georgia Tech)
Eric Mac Lain (Clemson)
as well as women’s basketball analysts
LaChina Robinson (Wake Forest)
Debbie Antonelli (NC State).
Wildhack said all 15 schools have provided ESPN a list of alumni that they would view as likely candidates, and in the end he expects all will be represented.

Spring football games will likely be broadcast on the ACCN. Wildhack said that he anticipates that ESPN will want to broadcast spring football games, which is “really a marketing opportunity" for the schools and their football programs.

Things we should NOT expect to see:
team post-game press conferences (except on special occasion)
weekly coaches’ shows on a weekly basis.

5 kitchens and a ‘fainting room’: Who’s building Syracuse area’s biggest mansion? (PS; Knauss)

The biggest house in Onondaga County is nearing completion. After three years of construction on the western shore of Skaneateles Lake, builders are nearly finished with a mansion that makes many other mansions look cramped.

How big is it?

Eight median-size new homes could fit inside.
The 19,070-square-foot residence includes three separate kitchens, plus two kitchenettes.
The property tax bill will likely exceed $300,000 a year, the highest in the county for a single-family residence.

The waterfront mansion marks a new era for Lakelawn, a historic 26-acre property that has long been home to powerful CEOs. The current owner is no exception.
John Mezzalingua is CEO of JMA Wireless, a growing manufacturer of wireless communications equipment. He owns the Skaneateles property in the name of a Delaware limited liability company, Lakelawn Properties LLC, according to a search of public records by syracuse.com/The Post-Standard.
Construction on the mansion began in 2016, town officials said.
Despite the prominence of the new mansion, which is already a highlight on boat tours of Skaneateles Lake, Mezzalingua and his family guard their privacy.

The building contractor, Rochester-based LeChase Construction, has been forbidden to discuss the project, a company official said. (LeChase, a major regional construction company, typically builds bigger projects like schools or hospitals rather than single-family residences.)

...

so is this guy an SU donor?
Dan Mezzalingua, class of 1960, is a life member of the SU Board of Trustees ... and has been a generous donor to SU. He also has four court side seats for SU basketball. My guess is that John Mezzalingua is related to him, possibly as his son.
