Welcome to World Environment Day!

In 1972, the first major conference on environmental issues took place. Organized by the United Nations, it was known as the Conference on the Human Environment and has also informally been known as the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on December 15, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 2994, which created World Environment Day. The date of June 5 was chosen because that was the date that the Stockholm Conference had started on. World Environment Day was first held in 1974.

World Environment Day is a "day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment." The resolution that created the day said governments and organizations in the United Nations system should "undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness and to pursuing the determination expressed at the Conference." Today the day is celebrated in over 100 countries, and millions of people have been involved in thousands of registered activities.

Who Could Break Out for Syracuse in 2019? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

When the Orange heads back to camp to prepare for the 2019 season, it will do so without a number of primary contributors from last season. However, in some spots, SU brings back some key cogs, with a few potentially exciting players poised to fill new vacancies as well. With that said, there’s a good chance many Syracuse fans will get to know some new faces on the gridiron this coming season. So, we might as well take a look at a who a few of them might be.

QB Tommy DeVito

Obviously, many people might see this one as a no-brainer. Eric Dungey is onto greener pastures and Chance Amie is transferring, which very most likely means DeVito will be starting under center in ’19. In a limited sample size last season, DeVito completed just about half of his passes with a 4-to-3 touchdown to interception ratio. A bright spot last year for DeVito was when he led the Orange to a comeback win over North Carolina. In building on last season’s success, it’s safe to say Syracuse will need several efforts like that one in the season ahead.

OT Ryan Alexander

As one of the big dogs up front, Alexander’s value might get a bit overlooked next season, but don’t sleep. The South Alabama graduate transfer is going to be crucial to a Syracuse team that no longer has Cody Conway or Koda Martin. Alexander was an all-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention for the Jaguars in 2018, and started 28 of the team’s 29 games over his career.

LB Andrew Armstrong

A senior from Youngstown, Ohio, Armstrong has made an impact through three years with the Orange, but we could see him take it to the next level in 2019. Armstrong was ninth on the team in tackles a season ago, but the only two linebackers ahead of him on that list are not returning for Syracuse next season (Ryan Guthrie and Kielan Whitner). Furthermore, Armstrong has made it known that he’s got a chip on his shoulder heading into 2019. Armstrong has never lacked the drive or work ethic. Now, with Guthrie and Whitner both gone, it might just be his time to shine.

Scott Satterfield will take over a 2-10 Louisville football program looking to win and win now. Which games are the most winnable for the Cards in 2019?

Scott Satterfield won’t have anything easy in his first season as head coach of the Louisville football program. He’ll inherit the pieces (broken albeit) of a team that went 2-10, with deep-rooted issues that go way beyond football.

With a brand new culture change to the program that already seems to be paying off, a new scheme, new staff, and an eager fan base who wants to get back to their winnings ways, Satterfield will have a lot of things going for him. But one of those things won’t be an easy schedule.

Louisville football will get the 2019 campaign kicked-off with a much-anticipated matchup with Notre Dame, a team that went undefeated through the regular season in 2018 making the College Football Playoff before being knocked off by Clemson.

Notre Dame will likely roll in as a top-five team and the Cards could be looking at a two steps back, one step forward type of situation with a big loss to the Irish week one.

While the Cards will have two non-conference matchups against in-state foes Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky (will play in Nashville), teams that Louisville should be able to defeat, the rest of their schedule is unforgiving.

CBS Sports ranked the Louisville schedule as the third hardest in the ACC, and it features road games against some of the conferences top schools including Florida State, Miami, North Carolina State as well as Wake Forest and arch rival Kentucky, who will be coming off their first 10 win season since 1977.

Virginia's Mendenhall Gets 2-Year Contract Extension
Virginia has given football coach Bronco Mendenhall a two-year contract extension.
Athletic director Carla Williams made the announcement Thursday. The extension will keep Mendenhall under contract with the Cavaliers through the 2024 season.
Mendenhall is entering his fourth season at Virginia and has a 16-22 overall record. The Cavaliers won two games his first season, six the next and eight last season.

Bill Connelly of SBNation projects the Cavs to win 7 to 8 games this season (with 3 to 5 losses in conference play, plus a loss to Notre Dame).

There's no doubt Syracuse will have the Tigers' full attention this year. First, Syracuse is likely Clemson's biggest competition in the ACC, with the schedule looking particularly weak this year. Second, the Orange came inches away from knocking off Clemson in Death Valley a year ago. But, of course, the biggest reason is what happened the last time Clemson went to the Carrier Dome, as it will in Week 3. Syracuse, which would win just four games in 2017, pulled off one of the most stunning upsets of the year. -- David M. Hale

Time for Transparency in Scholarship Offers?

Here are some highlights from SI's "The Case for Allowing Schools to Make Scholarship Offers Public":

Sometimes schools offer scholarships that they don't have in the hopes of getting a player to greyshirt. Sometimes players lie about which schools have offered them in the hopes of garnering interest from other schools.

What would happen if the schools could publicize their offers?
Some of them wouldn’t offer so many players.
SI’s Ross Dellenger dove into the scholarship offer math in February, and the numbers were staggering. Power Five schools now average 237 offers a year per school, up by 100 from 2012. Tennessee and Syracuse had more than 440 class of 2019 players reporting offers to 247Sports.com. Perhaps not all of those players actually had offers—something else we’d know if the schools could make them public. But having to publicly declare an offer might shame schools out of handing them out like Wendy’s coupons. Because when a team is only allowed to bring in 25 new players a year and it offers 300-plus players, some of those offers aren’t going to wind up being actionable—and that could come as a shock to a recruit trying to commit.
