Welcome to National Ballpoint Pen Day!

The evolution of writing implement technology is a continuous and subtle one. Lewis Waterman opened up the possibility of portable pens with his invention of a practical fountain pen in 1884. But relatively quickly, users began working on a version that would be less likely to smudge ink everywhere, leading to the development of the modern ballpoint pen.

Independently, inventors around the world began developing the ball-and-socket technology—an American banker named John L. Loud received a patent on a less-than-perfect version as early as 1888—but generally, it's Hungarian brothers László and György Bíró who are credited with inventing the pen we still use today.

László, who is most often credited with the invention, was a journalist who theorized that by using newspaper ink in pens he could eliminate the characteristic smudging of fountain pens. Starting in the 1930s, he began experimenting with using the ink in fountain pens, but found that it was too thick to flow readily. His chemist brother, György, helped him perfect the ball-and-socket technology, and in 1938, László Bíró signed a deal with his early backer and business partner, Andor Goy, to produce and sell the pens in Hungary.

Syracuse Offers Pair of 2021 Prospects After Camp Performances (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football held its first on campus recruiting camp on Saturday, dubbed Dino Babers Football Camp. The Orange hosted a plethora of prospects from the 2020, 2021, 2022 and even 2023 classes. The players came from all over, but New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New England and Canada were very well represented. Included in the list of campers were several 2020 and 2021 prospects on Syracuse's radar, including 2020 Canadian wide receiver Malick Meiga who already holds an Orange offer.

Two prospects who did not hold an offer entering camp were defensive end Kechaun Bennett and wide receiver Jordan Moore, both from the 2021 class. Each performed so well during the camp that picked up a scholarship opportunity from Syracuse. A member of the Orange coaching staff informed both players, after camp, that Syracuse was extending an offer.

Pipelines are critical assets in the world of recruiting for any sport, but particularly in football. Relationships with coaches help establish those pipelines, which are largely based on trust. The more a coach at a particular high school or junior college trusts that the coaching staff at a particular collegiate program will properly take care of and develop a player, the more likely that coach is to send players to that program.

Most often, pipelines in college football are viewed in terms of states. Syracuse has established pipelines into Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, New England, Maryland, Washington (D.C.), Virginia, the Midwest and others. Syracuse is also working hard to dip into Texas to establish themselves in that talent rich state. One New England school that Syracuse has been heavily involved recently is Suffield Academy in Connecticut.

In the 2020 recruiting cycle, Syracuse offered three players from Suffield Academy. They were quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, athlete Justin Barron and wide receiver Jaden Dottin. Van Dyke has committed to Miami, but Syracuse is still involved with the other two. Syracuse has recruited each hard, and that has given them a shot to add talent from the school.

Midnight Links - 6/10/19
(for you night owls!)

First, NCAA baseball tournament news:

  • Florida State moved past LSU to join Louisville in the College World Series.
  • Duke was eliminated by Vanderbilt - no shame there.
  • UNC plays Auburn Monday at 1:00 PM EDT (on ESPN2) for the right to advance.
Bottom Line: two ACC teams are in, with one more possibility.

By comparison, the SEC also has 2 guaranteed in the CWS, with 2 more possible, the Big XII has one in, the Pac-12 has 2 possibles and the Big Ten has one possible.

Get ready to pass, Wolfpack... Three West Virginia safeties, including both starters, reportedly enter the transfer portal. While I'm sure new head coach Neal Brown will get the Mountaineers back on track in time, I don't know that he'll be able to plug all the holes before NC State comes to Morgantown on September 14th.

Interview with a Yellow Jacket
Today we are pleased to hear from a Georgia Tech fan who goes by the pseudonym "GTFletch"...

Mark: Geoff Collins has probably done more to change the IMAGE of Georgia Tech than anyone in recent memory. The Institute of Technology is turning into this weird combination of "Atlanta Swag" and "High-Tech Nerds". What do you think of the new direction of the program?

GTFletch:
There were two primary things Coach Collins focused on when he spoke to AD Todd Stansbury. The first was culture and the second was brand. The culture he is creating is high energy. Everything from having a DJ at practice, trying to bring excitements to tuff workouts they do, they're busting their [tails]. But you will see the coaches dressed up as a "Game of Thrones" character or leprechauns on St. Patrick's Day and bunnies on Easter… The culture is very different from the TO/Flexbone days. The team is doing crazy stuff while they're getting better and stronger and having fun. All of this funnels into the Brand that Coach Collins is trying to create and showcase to potential recruits and the fanbase. Georgia Tech Football and Atlanta is the coolest place to play for. Their social media feeds, podcast and a web video series all focus around that! Obviously, it seems to be working as Tech football recruiting is really on fire with 13 commits by the start of June and several transfers coming into the program.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2019/06/07/acc-network-deals-not-signed-dont-worry-and-heres-why/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

There’s seems to be a growing concern that some distribution deals for the ACC Network are not yet signed. Is it time to time to worry? No it’s not, and here’s why.

Let’s go back to the successful launch of the SEC Network. Remember the SEC launched on August, 14 2014.

Charter signed on August 6, 2014
Cox Communications signed on July 9, 2014
Comcast signed on July 18, 2014
CableOne signed on August 1, 2014
WOW signed on August 1, 2014
DirectTV signed on August 5, 2014

That’s a lot of distribution deals signed between July and August.

Pitt AD Heather Lyke doesn’t seem concerned in this article in the PostGazette.

“ESPN, they’re doing a terrific job, but it will be very intense between now and Aug. 22 to see which cable companies pick it up,” Lyke said. “We feel like we’re in a really good position.”

The ACC’s current predicament isn’t exactly uncommon. Lyke noted that the Big Ten Network — the standard-bearer of conference-centric channels that has helped make the Big Ten, by far, the most profitable league in college athletics — wasn’t picked up by Comcast until 18 months after it had launched in 2007 (the two sides also settled a carriage dispute last September).

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t call your cable provider and demand the ACC Network. That’s the only way they’ll know you want it. The late distribution agreements are just part for the course.

Oh the ACC Network already has DirectTV signed months before the SEC Network did.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2019/06/08/ranking-the-5-best-running-backs-in-the-acc-for-2019/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

Well here we go. It’s time to start ranking the best players in the ACC for the 2019 season. As usual we hope you enjoy the rankings.

Previous and Upcoming Rankings

Quarterbacks | Wide Receivers | Offensive Linemen | Tight Ends |
Defensive Linemen | Linebackers | Cornerbacks | Safeties | Special Teams

1) Travis Etienne, Clemson

Clemson has the best QB in the country. They also have the best RB in the ACC in Travis Etienne. Etienne might just be nation’s best RB. A pre-season All-American, Etienne had a fantastic 2018 season running for 1,658 yards with a whopping 8.1 yards per carry average to go along with 24 TDs. He has tremendous break-away speed, and is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball.

2) AJ Dillon, Boston College

Even with an inconsistent passing game that led to defenses keying on him, AJ Dillon still ran for over 1,100 yards last season. He even missed two games while having an All-ACC 2018 season. The bruising 245 pound back returns going for his 3rd straight 1,000+ yard rushing season. He’s a projected as a 2nd to 3rd round NFL pick that, with a great season could move into the 1st round.

3) Cam Akers, Florida State

What could Cam Akers do with a competent offensive line? Somehow he managed to average 4.4 yards per carry behind arguably one of the five worst Power 5 offensive lines in the country. Akers broke FSU’s freshman rushing record in 2017 and still ran for 706 yards last year. I’ve seen mock drafts with him as high as a 2nd round pick. The Noles just need to give him a little help. He’s a big time talent.

4) Cade Carney, Wake Forest

Wake Forest’s Senior RB Cade Carney is back after a strong 1,005 rushing season season. He also averaged a solid 5.3 yards per rush with 223 rushing yards against Duke. I’m not quite sure he’s has gifted as the other running backs on this list, but he sure is reliable and productive. He didn’t have one single fumble in 188 carries.

5) Michael Carter, UNC

Michael Carter is a talented RB that got lost on a 2-9 UNC team. On just 84 carries he had nearly 600 yards on the ground for an outstanding 7.1 yards per rush average. The versatile back also had 25 receptions last year and is UNC’s second leading returning receiver. Carter might be rest RB of a sneaky good group at UNC.
