Welcome to Sewing Machine Day!
Sewing machines, which are celebrated today, are used to stitch material like cloth or leather. They are usually powered by electricity, but many are still powered by a treadle, just as many early machines were. Their basic design has remained over the years, consisting of a needle, and a shuttle to carry thread. First being used in factories, they were a symbol of the industrial revolution, marking the shift from handmade to automated production. They also became important for home use. Women once spent much time sewing by hand, and the invention of the sewing machine helped free up a lot of this time.
Thomas Saint of England took out the first patent for a complete sewing machine. He was given patent #1764 in 1790. Some sources say that he received his patent on June 13, explaining why Sewing Machine Day takes when it does. The machine was to have an awl that punched a hole, and then a needle that would go through the hole. It is unknown if Saint created a prototype of his sewing machine, and only the drawings of it survive.

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/06/13/position-breakdown-defensive-line-2019-syracuse-football-preview/ (the juice; Cheng)
As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re taking a look at the defensive line, one of the deepest and most talented units on Syracuse.
WHO’S OUT
Syracuse only loses one lineman from 2018, but it’s a big one (both literally and figuratively). Chris Slayton, the team’s defensive captain, was an All-ACC Honorable Mention after he made 24 tackles, including eight for a loss, and had 3.5 sacks.
Slayton didn’t have the gaudy numbers that some of his other linemen had, but he also consistently absorbed double teams, which freed up the ends to have stellar seasons (more on that below).
The New York Giants took note of Slayton’s exceptional strength, and selected him with the 31st pick in the seventh round (No. 245 overall).
PROJECTED STARTERS
The Orange return three starters from a defensive line that helped set a program record with 43 sacks.
Defensive ends Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson are back, as is defensive tackle McKinley Williams.
Robinson led all SU linemen in tackles with 39 and added 10 sacks, which was tied for second in the ACC with Coleman. He was named to the All-ACC Second Team after his junior season.

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/06/11/florida-state-seminoles-2019-syracuse-football-preview/ (the juice; Cheng)
As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its ACC schedule when it travels to the Sunshine State to play FSU on Oct. 26.
BRILES ARRIVES
It was a trying first year for Willie Taggart at Florida State.
For 36 straight years, the Seminoles had been remarkably consistent, going to a bowl game each year during that time period. That all came to a crashing halt in 2018, with the Seminoles finishing 5-7.
Taggart has promised large scale changes, and has reshuffled his coaching staff in hopes of getting his team back on track in his second year.
It starts on the offense, where Taggart’s group finished an unthinkable 112th in the FBS in scoring offense at 21.9 points per game. That led to the dismissal of former offensive coordinator Walt Bell and the hiring of Kendal Briles, the son of former Baylor coach Art Briles (the same coaching tree as Syracuse head coach Dino Babers).
Though the move came with controversy, there is no questioning Briles’ offensive acumen.
During his most recent stop in Houston as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2018, the Cougars finished fifth in the NCAA at 43.9 points per game, and seventh at 512.3 yards of total offense per game. As the OC of Florida Atlantic in 2017, the results were similar: FAU averaged 40.6 points per game with 498.4 yards of total offense per game.
A taste for that offensive was on display for the first time during the spring game, and the “Gulf Coast” offense showed signs that things were starting to click. The split squads combined for 923 yards, six touchdowns, all while keeping penalties to a minimum in the hurry-up offense. The two teams moved so quickly that they ran 96 plays in the first half alone.

FSU Football: Jaiden Lars-Woodbey one of the best tacklers in ACC (chopchat.com; Hunt)
FSU football gave up a lot of explosive plays in the secondary in 2018, but returns one of its best tacklers in Jaiden Lars-Woodbey.
FSU football had such a lack of depth at the linebacker position that former five-star safety Jaiden Lars-Woodbey had to change positions in 2018.
In fact, he started as a true freshman after changing positions and was named to the ESPN Freshman All-American team.
He did that after getting banged up early in the season, a shoulder injury he’s still recovering from.
However, that didn’t stop Lars-Woodbey from being one of the best tacklers in the ACC according to Pro Football Focus:
When Jaiden Woodbey squared up for a tackle last season, he made it the majority of the time. pic.twitter.com/0977GKvZ99
— PFF College (@PFF_College) June 11, 2019
Lars-Woodbey finished the season tied for fourth on the team with 58 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. He was also second on the team with eight passes broken up.
The interesting thing to note is Lars-Woodbey is planning to return back to his original safety position in 2019.
It’ll be great to have such a physical and sure tackler in the secondary, but the biggest question now is can he still cover with the added size?
He’s listed at 6’3″ 223 pounds by the school website that was updated not long ago. He was listed at 6’2″ 204 pounds as a recruit, so that’s quite a bit of size added and
I suppose the good thing is he could always move back to linebacker since the Noles have solid depth with one of the best secondary recruiting classes in the nation coming in.

http://orangefizz.net/2019/06/three-freshmen-that-could-make-an-instant-impact-for-syracuse-this-fall/ (orangefizz.net; Raucci)
Lost in the shuffle of all the greatness that came with Syracuse football’s 2018 season (the program’s first ten win-season in nearly two decades and a Camping World Bowlvictory over rival West Virginia come to mind) seems to be just how young some of the key members of the Orange were last season.
Two of its best offensive weapons, Taj Harris and Jarveon Howard? Both true freshman. How about the secondary? Andre Cisco was a freshman All-American and tied for the national lead in interceptions as a true freshman while Trill Williams also made an impact in the defensive backfield. That’s not to mention a couple of redshirt freshman getting in Ifeatu Melifonwu and Lou Groza Award winner Andre Szmyt impressing in their first official seasons in Orange and Blue.
The young guys really stepped up to help create the magical season that the Orange went on in 2018 and should all be a huge part of what SU tries to accomplish this fall as well. With that being said, however, there are some spots that are left weakened by graduation and that don’t really have any definitive superstars ready to step in and be sure-fire standouts. That’s where this next batch of newbies might just be able to step in.
Lee Kpogba
The top-rated recruit in Syracuse’s 2019 recruiting class, Kpogba has a great chance at making an impact at the linebacker position for the Orange this fall. After losing two of its three starters (Ryan Guthrie and Kielan Whitner) to graduation, the linebacking corps is perhaps the biggest position group question mark Syracuse has going into the 2019 season. Andrew Armstrong will be back to man one of the spots, but the other one or two slots is pretty much wide open.
Some expect either junior college transfer Lakiem Williams or sophomore Juan Wallace to slide into some big-time snaps because they’ve both already spent a year in the program. DE/LB combo Tyrell Richards should also see some time at backer, but his position flexibility bodes well for a freshman like Kpogba trying to make an impact.

Louisville Football: 2019 Cardinals Season Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com)
The Cardinals rank No. 81 in Athlon's Top 130 for 2019
The University of Louisville football team lost 10 of 12 games, gave up at least 52 points in each of its last five games and got Bobby Petrino fired with two weeks left in the season. That’s all there is to say about 2018.
Scott Satterfield was recruited from his alma mater, Appalachian State, to fix a colossal mess. He didn't have much time to recruit, so Satterfield focused his introductory months on attitude, effort and values. He moved the start of spring practice to early February so that he and his staff could determine precisely how much work there was to do.
Plenty. After being outscored by nearly 25 points per game last season, the Cardinals need dramatic improvement at every position. Quarterback is a mess. Running back is a question mark. The offensive line has been an issue for two seasons. The defense ranked last in the ACC in points and yards allowed.

FSU Football: Willie Taggart explains team’s mindset entering 2019 season (chopchat.com; Parker)
FSU football is determined to not have a second straight losing season in 2019, but it took an honest look at what happened last year before moving on.
In just over two and a half months, the FSU football team will take the field in Jacksonville and look to do something that hasn’t been done since the 2016 season: win their opening game when head coach Willie Taggart kicks off year number two in charge of the Seminoles as they face the Boise State Broncos.
Of course, for Taggart and the Noles a lot of what will be done at least at the start of the season will be to get the bitter taste out of their mouths from a 2018 campaign that saw the Seminoles finish with the first losing season in over four decades with losses in four of their final five games in the regular season.
While there was nothing to cheer about in Tallahassee when it comes to last season, the future is at least brighter with a Seminoles program that is thought by many to be better in the upcoming season and should – baring an epic letdown over the course of the year – be bowling again at the end of the 2019 campaign.
So, how did the FSU football team get to a place in their minds where it was time to move on? During an event at the end of last month in Miami Gardens as part of his annual Seminole Boosters coach’s tour, Taggart told Chop Chat that the mindset was two basic words: get better.
For Taggart and the FSU football team this season, that mindset has to include a hot early start to the season with a schedule that is somewhat favorable – just one game outside of the state of Florida out of their first five contests – before heading off to face defending national champs Clemson on October 12th.“The mindset was to make sure that we don’t do the things that we did last year. Improve on the things we did wrong and make sure we correct all those mistakes and a lot of that starts with ourselves and improving ourselves…and be better teammates, better coaches and doing everything we can for our university because our university has been good for all of us.”
If the Seminoles can somehow be undefeated – heck, at this point I would take a 4-1 record at that point – when they face off against the Tigers, Taggart and the Noles can breath much easier in terms of having a winning season and getting back to a bowl game this season.

https://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2019/june/12/2019-acc-football-recruiting-breakdown-miami (thekeyplay.com; Jessee)
'The U', for all their shortcomings on the field, have been a recruiting powerhouse since entering the ACC. Miami has been ranked in the top 4 of ACC recruiting classes every year except 2011 since joining the league. Granted, it's a pretty easy place to recruit to. It's a gorgeous campus and top-notch private university, nestled in one of the most football talent rich regions in America. (They also have hammocks everywhere on campus, it's actually really awesome.)
In terms of the 2019 class, new head coach Manny Diaz had quite the task. Maybe not so much in building up a roster, but in getting guys who could contribute to win now. Miami will have a top 2 defense in the ACC, most likely. And with a talented WR corps, the pressure for Miami to trot out some quarterback talent is as high as it's ever been.
2019 Class:
ACC Rank: 4
Top Recruit: Jeremiah Payton, WR, Neptune Beach FL (0.9730)
Payton is a really interesting prospect for a 2019 guy. He doesn't fit the mold that most 4-star WR's nowadays conform to. He's 6'0" tall, weighs only about 190lb, and was most recently tested at a 4.74 second 40-yard dash. That being said, he's a beast.
Payton was impressive in Miami's spring game. His route running is beyond his years, and he can come into the 5-6 deep at WR and contribute immediately.
Biggest Need: Culture Guys
It's a vague need but hear me out. 'The U' hasn't exactly been the dominating force of a team that they used to be. They don't exactly strike fear into opponents like those early 2000's teams with Sean Taylor and Ray Lewis did. There's a major between having a team full of guys that play with swagger and relentlessness and having a turnover chain, and Miami hasn't quite been able to find that for an entire season.
In 2017-18 Miami butchered their chance at a Playoff berth by losing to a bad Pitt team, then got crushed by Clemson, then lost by 10 to Wisconsin in the bowl game. In 2018-19, Miami ended the season 2-5 after starting 5-1. In the Mark Richt era (2016-2018), Miami averaged over 6 penalties a game, not finishing in the top 60 in the country in any of the three seasons.
That's what Manny Diaz is trying to fix in Coral Gables. It's not a lack of talent, it's a lack of culture. The last time I, or Diaz checked, they don't give you trophies for what your team did 20 years ago.
Most Exciting Recruit: Jaelen Phillips, DE/LB, UCLA transfer (0.9600)
Manny Diaz hit the Portal hard, and this was his biggest pickup in a transfer class that's taking full advantage of the system. Phillips was the number one recruit in the nation coming out of high school in 2017. Injuries plagued his freshman and sophomore seasons at UCLA. Due to only playing in 4 games last season, Phillips will be a r-Sophomore next season and his appeal with the NCAA is currently pending.
On the field, Phillips had 4.5 sacks in just 10 games played at UCLA. At 6'5", he's big enough to play on the line, but fast enough to play linebacker as well. If Manny Diaz can find a way to use him correctly, he can be a game changing player for Miami.

Clemson Football: Early Opponent Analysis vs. Syracuse Orange (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)
The 2019 Clemson football season is less than three months from kickoff. Here’s our early opponent breakdown of the Syracuse Orange.
The clock is ticking.
The 2019 Clemson football season is less than three months away from kicking off. The Tigers will be opening up the season with a home game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on a Thursday night in Death Valley.
Following that ACC matchup, Clemson will take on the Texas A&M Aggies at 3:30 p.m. the next Saturday. After the two home tilts, the Tigers will take to the road for the first time when they play the Syracuse Orange up in the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse has designated the matchup as their Homecoming and it’s clear that the Orange will be pulling out all the stops to try and pull off the upset.
Here’s our early opponent analysis and breakdown of the Syracuse Orange.
Early Opponent Analysis:
Syracuse is the biggest threat to Clemson and the ACC Atlantic Division. The Orange will have to replace Eric Dungey- one of the top QBs of all-time in Syracuse history- but Tommy DeVito looked solid in his time at quarterback last season.
The Orange also return Moe Neal and Abdul Adams at running back, but will have to replace both starters at offensive tackle from last season.
Defensively, both Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman return after having double-digit sack seasons a year ago. They’ve also got plenty of returning experience in the secondary, led by safety Andre Cisco who was named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.
Dino Babers is doing a great job up in Syracuse building the program and it’s clear that the Orange are set to take another step forward this season.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/06/12/syracuse-football-pat-shurmur-comment-opens-door-eric-dungey/ (itlh; Esden Jr)
Former Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey is trying to make an NFL roster this fall. New York Giants HC Pat Shurmur opened the door this week.
Eric Dungey has been facing long odds all of his life. He faced long odds with the Syracuse football squad through a variety of injuries and now he’s facing incredible odds to make the New York Giants roster as a rookie.
After spending four years on the hill putting up video game numbers, Dungey wasn’t selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. Nearly a week went by without any update on Eric’s future until out of nowhere ED signed a deal with Big Blue.
Eric had multiple offers after going undrafted and was more patient than most players in his position with his selection process. A phone call with Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur sealed the deal:
“We were kind of all over the board probably until Tuesday late afternoon,” Tim Dungey said to Nate Mink of Syracuse.com. “Shurmur called Eric, and they had a long conversation and he made Eric feel pretty good.”
Well, another comment that Pat Shurmur made to the media should also make Dungey feel pretty good about his immediate future:
The reason why this comment stands out is that the narrative has been set that Eli Manning is the starter and nothing is going to change. That is what has been force fed down our throats since the Giants selected Daniel Jones sixth overall out of Duke as the franchise’s future franchise quarterback.“I think we’re going to play the very best player,” Shurmur said following Tuesday’s OTA practice when asked directly if there is a quarterback competition on tap during training camp via Matt Lombardo of NJ.com. “I know we’re dancing around the words there. Eli is getting ready to have a great year and Daniel is getting ready to play. We’ll see what happens with it.”
Which means at best Dungey could be the third wheel in that awkward quarterback relationship.
