Pan was the Greek god of shepherds, woods, and pastures, and when he would awake from a nap he would let out a yell that caused flocks to stampede. Greek authors coined the word “panikon” from this, which meant “sudden fear”. Panic is “a sudden sensation of fear, which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason or logical thinking, replacing it with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction.” Panic can happen in an individual or it can happen in large groups. It is not healthy for people to be in a constant panic, as stress levels are raised which can be detrimental to health. This day is dedicated to this sensation of panicking. International Panic Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 18th. SU News http://orangefizz.net/2019/06/syracuse-hosting-five-big-name-targets-this-weekend/ (orangefizz.net; Leonard) Syracuse football picked up some big momentum recruiting wise this past weekend by landing two new 2020 commits, and now the Orange looks to keep it going with a ton of big name targets coming to campus for visits this upcoming weekend. Based on rankings, this is one of the biggest SU football recruiting weekends in awhile. Five high-priority targets have scheduled visits this weekend on campus. Four of the five have rankings above 87 overall on 247sports.com. To put that in perspective, here’s the short list of just nine players in the past four recruiting cycles to commit to Syracuse with a rating above 87 on that site. 2019: Cornellius Nunn, Mikel Jones, Geoff Cantin, Lee Kpogba 2018: Trill Williams, Qadir White, Ed Hendrix 2017: Tommy DeVito, Ravian Pierce (transfer) 2016: None Here’s everything you need to know about this five targets that could soon be picking the Orange. WR: Bryce Gowdy (Deerfield Beach, Deerfield Beach, FL) Size: 6-2, 180 Ranking: 342nd, 4-star, 89 overall (via 247sports.com) Other Offers: Florida State, Florida, Arkansas, Oregon, Tennessee, Penn State, WVU, GT Fringe ESPN300 receiver. Coming to Syracuse Thursday to tour campus. Just finished up an OV at West Virginia last weekend and Georgia Tech at the end of May. Syracuse was his very first offer. He’s really risen since then and SU now has to compete with offers from elite level schools across the nation. Super speedy and shifty. Would be an instant playmaking threat on the outside. Think Taj Harris (almost the exact same build) but maybe even more impactful as a freshman. Gowdy is the highest rated player and the only four-star target on 247sports.com that is coming this weekend. The Orange have only landed two recruits with the same rating as him at 89 overall (Trill Williams and Tommy DeVito) in recent memory. Simply put, he would be one of the biggest commitments of the Dino Babers era. WR: Kentron Poitier (Miami Palmetto, Miami, FL) Size: 6-3.5, 205 Ranking: 607th, 3-star, 87 overall (via 247sports.com) Other Offers: Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Oregon, Florida, Miami, Michigan Coming June 21st (Friday) along with high school teammate and fellow 2020 target Robert Hanna (see below). Both guys go to the same HS as top 2019 recruit Cornellius Nunn did. Fringe 4-star with great athleticism and size. Could basically go anywhere he wants. Feels like SU has realistic shot because there was mutual interest early on. Main recruiter, Nick Monroe, visited him on May 18th, 2019. Poitier has an absolutely loaded offer sheet. Syracuse is his only visit planned though right now, according to 247sports.com. More proof wide receiver could be Dino Babers’ position of the future in regards to recruiting. S: Robert Hanna (Miami Palmetto, Miami, FL) Size: 6-0,170 Ranking:1275th, 3-star, 83 overall (via 247sports.com) Other Offers:Miami, Louisville, Liberty, Pitt, UCF, USF, UAB He’s coming up Friday with HS teammate and WR Kentron Poitier (see above). Already unofficially visited SU back on April 13th. Has picture of him rocking Syracuse jersey as his Twitter avatar pic, which can’t be a bad sign. One of his only other visits was hometown Miami. Could be between the Orange and the Hurricanes for this play-making safety from Miami Palmetto HS in FL (remember what happened last time that was the case). We’re looking at you Cornelius Nunn. Lowest rated player coming this weekend but still would be a very solid get and, of course, you’d think would increase the chances of getting Poitier as well. ROBERT HANNA HIGHLIGHTS OLB: Tirek Austin-Cave (Camden, Camden, NJ) ... 10 teams who could make their first College Football Playoff in 2019 (fansided.com; Villano) ... 6. Syracuse The Syracuse Orange are ranked in the late teens and 20’s in most post-spring rankings, so it’s an uphill battle to make the College Football Playoff, especially with Clemson in their conference. But, Syracuse has played the reigning national champions as tough as anyone not named Alabama in recent seasons. Last season, Syracuse went into halftime with a 16-7 lead on the road against the eventual National Champions. They went into the fourth quarter with the lead. Then, Clemson did Clemson things and came out with a 27-23 win. This season, they play Clemson at home in September. They could catch Clemson by surprise while they are still trying to replace some of their best players, especially on the defensive line where multiple players left to go play in the NFL. New quarterback Tommy DeVito looked really good in the spring game. Syracuse is still a long shot, but with a great quarterback with very little tape to scout, a coach that has the program going in the right direction, and an early-season matchup to build confidence through the rest of the season, Syracuse could be one of the biggest surprises this decade. ... https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/video/leon-lowery-one-on-one-clips-from-syracuse-camp/ (cbssports.com; video) Leon Lowery One on One Clips from Syracuse Camp Syracuse Commit Shows Pass Rushing Skills https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/06/17/syracuse-football-has-sold-more-than-4000-new-season-tickets/ (the juice; Robinson) Syracuse football has gained momentum over the past two decades, and 2019 is no exception given the data on the tickets already sold for this coming SU football season. More than 4,000 new tickets have already been sold, and in addition, the fan base is sticking around with the Orange because more than 90% have renewed their tickets. Andrew Goodrich, the Syracuse Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Marketing Officer, has said that they are truly inspired to see alumni and fans from Syracuse and other different cities like Rochester, Utica, and the Southern Tier supporting their football program. He added that they will work toward having a motivated team and excited fan base by creating an exceptional college football atmosphere inside Carrier Dome. The team’s performance The Orange won the Camping World Bowl over West Virginia University last year. Syracuse returns 13 starters on offense and defense from last year’s team, which went 10-3 and finished ranked number 15. The team is known for its high-quality game, and you cannot miss out on their action in the upcoming season. Speaking of great performances on the pitch, high levels of training and bodybuilding are required for football. Making the Indianapolis Colts roster has never been more difficult than now. We’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is two former Syracuse football teammates (Steve Ishmael and Zaire Franklin) were reunited on the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 and are both still on the roster in 2019. The conferences that have had teams left out of the College Football Playoff have been leagues with nine-game conference schedules. Of course, it helps that the SEC and ACC — the two conferences that play eight conference games — are led by Alabama and Clemson, two programs that would have made the four-team field over the past few years no matter what league they were in. As things stand, Clemson remains a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference and that group plays eight conference games. Well, except this year when two ACC members play nine conference games, though only eight of those will count in the standings. Here is from top to bottom the most difficult non-conference ACC schedules. 1. Duke Aug. 31 vs. Alabama (Atlanta) Sept. 7 vs. North Carolina A&T Sept. 14 at Middle Tennessee Nov. 9 vs. Notre Dame By opening with Alabama and then facing Notre Dame in November, the Blue Devils will battle two of last season’s four playoff teams. Plus, the trip to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to play the Blue Raiders won't be easy. 2. Florida State Aug. 31 vs. Boise State (Jacksonville, Fla.) Sept. 7 vs. ULM Nov. 16 vs. Alabama State Nov. 30 at Florida The Seminoles always have that season-ending clash with the Gators and this year it will be in the Swamp. But Florida State usually lines up another big non-conference game and this year it's the opener against Boise in nearby Jacksonville. 3. Clemson Sept. 7 vs. Texas A&M Sept. 21 vs. Charlotte Nov. 2 vs. Wofford Nov. 30 at South Carolina For the fourth year in a row (and the 10th time in 12 years), Clemson double dips with SEC games. The Tigers go to Columbia this year while A&M comes to Death Valley after nearly knocking off Clemson in College Station last September. ... ... 11. Syracuse Aug. 31 at Liberty Sept. 7 at Maryland Sept. 21 vs. Western Michigan Sept. 28 vs. Holy Cross Power 5 teams hardly ever open the season with two true road games, but that is exactly what the Orange will do this fall. Maryland should be improved under new head coach Mike Locksley and Western Michigan gave Syracuse trouble in last year's opener. ... https://247sports.com/college/virginia-tech/Article/Virginia-Tech-Hokies-Football-Composite-four-five-star-ACC-Review-Comparison-132927884/ (247sports.com; Watkins) Last week, we looked at how Virginia Tech is layering 247sports Composite four-star depth at various positions. While seeing how many former Composite four-star prospects are on the roster is a good starting point, comparing the data across the conference can help paint a broader picture about Virginia Tech’s recruiting efforts under Head Coach Justin Fuente. Coach Fuente arrived at Virginia Tech following the 2015 season, two months ahead of National Signing Day for the 2016 class. While the 2016 cycle is considered a transition year, it is the starting point of the analysis as other programs have gone through similar coaching changes over the past four cycles and are similarly included in the result set. Over the past four recruiting cycles (2016-19), the ACC has signed a total of 15 247Sports Composite five-star recruits, with 60-percent of them signing with the Clemson Tigers. 33-percent have signed with Florida State, who hasn’t signed a five-star prospect since 2017, and the remaining 7-percent have signed with Miami. As we head into 2019, there’s a chance that the Clemson football offensive line is even better than the unit was in 2018. First, it was the Brian Brohm-led Bobby Petrino offenses that featured superstar playmakers like Harry Douglas and Michael Bush. A few years later, Charlie Strong brought run-heavy offenses with Teddy Bridgewater, Bilal Powell, and Jeremy Wright, as well as receivers like DeVante Parker and Damian Copeland. Most recently. Lamar Jackson and company led offenses that broke nearly every Louisville record. More often than not, recent Louisville offenses put up big numbers and built the brand of Louisville football into a respectable program on the verge of becoming an upper echelon team in the ACC. Then came 2018. Last season, Bobby Petrino was without arguably his most important player in his decades of coaching in Lamar Jackson and knowing he had a staff that wasn’t capable of coaching up talent he had to figure out a way to continue the growth of the program. Clearly, we know how that went and it produced statistics that were mind-bogglingly bad. On the other hand, new Louisville football head coach Scott Satterfield and his Appalachian State offense continued to produce at a high rate. His run-heavy attack that featured high powered offenses year after year was part of the reason he ultimately had a career breakthrough and was hired at Louisville. ... https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/06/new-accn-hire-dalen-cuff.html (RX; HM) New ACCN Hire: Dalen Cuff Unless I'm forgetting someone (possible), this is the first non-ACC-alumnus hired by the ACC Network... https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/06/accn-live-sports-schedule-first-3-weeks.html (RX; HM) Why the SEC is the best CFB conference (or is it?) From 247Sports: "9 reasons why the SEC is college football's best in 2019" by Brad Crawford I'll tell you what he wrote, then I'll tell you why he's WRONG! Here are nine reasons why the SEC deserves the title of 'college football's best league' this fall: 9. BEST COLLECTION OF COACHES That's nice, but who are the other three? Dabo Swinney (Clemson, ACC), Mack Brown (UNC, also ACC) and Butch Davis (FIU, C-USA). Now you might discount Brown as someone who will never win another one - but for all I know neither will Fisher! Now there are plenty of active head coaches who won championships as assistants - and the SEC has more of those to be sure. I'll give a slight edge to the SEC here, but only slight. 8. NFL TALENT However, consider this from FootballScoop: Other ‘Fight like a girl?’ Syracuse Mets are all in (PS; Kramer) The visit by three rehabbing New York Mets to Syracuse last week was a real smorgasbord of delights for their temporary Triple-A teammates. Pitcher Justin Wilson, outfielder Brandon Nimmo and second baseman Robinson Cano all thanked their hosts in the customary baseball manner by treating to special team meals. Wilson splurged for a postgame ribs spread from Galloway’s BBQ and catering, Cano bought a pregame snack from Popeyes and a postgame meal from Texas de Brazil and Nimmo opened his wallet for a pregame offering from Chick-fil-A. “It’s just common courtesy. We’re very fortunate to be in the position that we’re in,” Nimmo said. “So you come down, they allow you to play and take some at-bats away from them. It’s our common courtesy to give them a little it of a meal.” Syracuse home clubhouse manager Jody Pucello rightfully takes pride in his wide-ranging offerings from Nikos, but the temporary menu expansion was appreciated by the hungry Mets. “Time to feast, man. It’s good food,” said Syracuse first baseman Travis Taijeron. The cost of the meals was not revealed. Nimmo makes almost $600,000 this season, Wilson is pulling in $5 million and Cano is banking $24 million. “They’re all making enough up there. So you come down here, obviously guys really appreciate a little bit better food. Everyone came through for the boys in Syracuse,” said Mets reliever Ryan O’Rourke. Such generosity is a tradition among rehabbing big-leaguers that can take many forms. O’Rourke recalled a similar surprise when he played with Rochester and Trevor Plouffe came down from Minnesota. After a game in Lehigh Valley, O’Rourke said the players came out their clubhouse to the sight of a couple of food trucks parked outside. Plouffe had paid for them to drive up over from Philadelphia and deliver some Philly cheese steaks. ...
