American-Eagle-Day.jpg

Welcome to American Eagle Day!

The bald eagle is the national symbol and emblem of the United States, as well as the country's national bird. It also is on the obverse side of the Great Seal of the United States. Today we celebrate the bald eagle, on the anniversary of the day in 1782 when the seal bearing its image became official. Besides being celebrated for being on the Great Seal and for being the country's symbol and national bird, the eagle is celebrated today for its recovery after almost becoming extinct, for the values and ideals it has come to represent, and for its importance to American folklore and society.

In 1776, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were tasked with creating a seal for the newly formed country. Their design was not accepted by Congress, and a few other committees were formed over the next few years where various people worked on designing the seal. Finally, after six years, a design was approved and became official on June 20, 1782.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • York Suburban lineman Garth Barclay has verbally committed to Syracuse.
  • The 6-foot, 7-inch, 250-pounder is rated the No. 20 recruit in Pennsylvania.
  • Syracuse is coming off a 10-3 season, which was the team's best season in years.
York Suburban High School lineman Garth Barclay will play college football in a Power Five Conference.
The Trojans’ standout announced his verbal commitment to Syracuse on his Twitter site on Wednesday evening, saying: “With great appreciation and respect for everyone who has helped me along the way, I am very happy to announce my commitment to Syracuse University.”
The 6-foot, 7-inch, 250-pound Barclay is the No. 20 recruit in Pennsylvania for the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.com. That service rated him as a three-star recruit on a five-star scale.
“He’s pound for pound one of the strongest kids on our team,” Suburban coach Andy Loucks had previously said about his towering Trojan. “His technique on the lifts are perfect. He’s spent a lot of time in the offseason in getting better.”

With great appreciation and respect for everyone who has helped me along the way, I am very happy to announce my commitment to Syracuse University @CuseFootball@CoachBabersCuse@CoachLynch@CoachCavCuseOL Family-LaFamilia-Ohana #OITNF#JuicedUp
— Garth Barclay (@GarthBarclay) June 19, 2019
Loucks also said earlier that Barclay, who has gained 70 pounds since his freshman season, is not yet close to peaking.
“Wherever he goes, he’s going to get better physically and technically,” Loucks said. “When I was recruiting for colleges, that was something we always took into account. We wanted to know if they were a finished product or if they could continue growing for us. … They know he’s only going to get better when they get a hold of him.”

Size runs in the Barclay family. Garth's father, Pete, is 6-8 and played football at Princeton. His mother, Kate, was also an athlete, competing on the rowing team at Princeton. His brother, Gavin, stands at 6-6 and weighs in at 310 pounds and is a starting offensive lineman for Lafayette.
Garth Barclay also had offers from Virginia, UConn, Bowling Green, Buffalo and Central Michigan, among others.

Syracuse Lands 2020 Kicker/Punter (247sports.com; McAllister)

Athens (Ga.) Academy kicker/punter James Williams has committed to Syracuse, the 2020 prospect announced on Wednesday. Williams was offered a scholarship by the Orange Wednesday, and wasted no time making his decision and becoming the seventh member of Syracuse’s 2020 class. He visited campus over this past weekend and impressed the staff with his kicking ability. Williams knew he wanted to be at Syracuse, so it was just a matter of picking up the offer. Once he had that, he pounced on the opportunity.
"Great uprising football team with a leader of a coach as well as great special teams history and very strong academics," Williams said of his decision.

Indeed Syracuse has head a great special teams history. They used to be one of the best kicker factories in college football, producing talent from Gary Anderson to Olindo Mare and many in between. In addition, Syracuse picked up its first Lou Groza Award after last season when true freshman Andre Szmyt won the coveted award. Syracuse has had some notable punters as well, with a recent string of elite production from that prediction. Syracuse has gone from Rob Long to Riley Dixon with pro prospect Sterling Hofrichter currently holding the position.
Last season, Syracuse had one of the best special teams units in the country, finishing sixth overall and second among power five teams. That is what Williams will be joining. Dino Babers has put a premium on special teams play since his arrival at Syracuse, and that has shown in the results. With Hofrichter leaving after the 2019 season, Syracuse needs a replacement. Williams is that replacement.

I didn't realize until I did the research for this post, but of the 13 college football games scheduled to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the regular season*, 12 of them - yes, all but one - involves an ACC team. By contrast, only 7 of those games involves a team from the SEC.

That doesn't mean that the SEC is in any danger of being run out of Atlanta - they still have their conference championship in this stadium every season (* hence the "regular season" stipulation), and of course either conference can send a team to play in the Peach Bowl as well. Nonetheless, in my mind this marks a definite change in the ACC - from previously conceding Atlanta to the SEC to now aggressively going after the hearts, minds and wallets of Atlanteans.

BOTTOM LINE: Playing in this state-of-the-art stadium is good for the reputation of Georgia Tech and the ACC in general.

I wonder if this guy ever watched a Clemson-Syracuse game?

The start of the 2018 football season is less than 12 weeks away, and with that in mind, it is now time to begin to break down the schedule that Clemson will have to face.
With the Tigers carrying hopes of a fifth straight trip to the College Football Playoff, and a third national title in the last four seasons, today we look at the five toughest games on the 2019 schedule.
CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Dixon becoming every-down back

Admittedly, this list was the most difficult.
How does one order a list of "toughest" or “most difficult” games when the Tigers are favored by double digits in every game — most by more than 20 points?
Here's a good old college try.
5. The N.C. State Wolfpack: The Wolfpack will enter this season’s game in Death Valley with revenge on their mind.
It was three seasons ago, the Wolfpack missed a field goal at the end of regulation that would have won the game against the eventual national champions. Two seasons ago, the Tigers claimed a seven-point victory — meaning two straight victories by a combined 14 points.
However the Tigers put the Wolfpack back in their place last season, as they dominated the Wolfpack by a final score of 41-7.
Granted the Tigers have won 14 of the last 15 meetings in this series, including the last six in a row. With one of the best 2018 quarterbacks in the ACC, Ryan Finley, no longer at the helm of the Wolfpack offense, one can only imagine that the Tigers will once again have their way — unless a rogue laptop computer makes an appearance.
CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Tigers' five 'easiest' games
4.
The Boston College Eagles: What head coach Steve Addazio has accomplished at Chestnut Hill has been nothing short of amazing, and it culminated with a special season last year that BC will look to build on.
Quarterback Anthony Brown is back to run the offense, and he has his top target returning in Kobay White, who emerged as a capable threat last season. Brown has improved as a passer, but will need to be even better if the Eagles want to do some damage in the ACC.

ACCN to Debut “All In: The Clemson Football Family” on Aug. 25 (Clemsontigers.com)

for gbo

Release via ACC Network
Three days following the launch of ACC Network (ACCN), the new, 24/7 national platform launching on August 22, 2019, fans will have an opportunity to go “all in” with a behind-the-scenes look at Clemson football, a program that has won two of the last three College Football Playoff National Championships. All In: The Clemson Football Family will air Sunday, Aug. 25 – Wednesday, Aug. 28, in primetime on ACCN.
“We knew early on that we wanted to do something special with Clemson,” said Stacie McCollum, senior director of programming and acquisitions. “We wanted to showcase the people and culture behind the program’s success as they prepare to defend their national title. Access programming and storytelling will be hallmarks of this network, and the opportunity to feature the Tigers in our first series is a testament to that commitment. Anyone who loves college football will enjoy this series.”
Tiger Family Values
For over a decade, head coach Dabo Swinney has been building not just a football program at Clemson, but a family. The series will highlight the culture of Clemson football and what it’s like to be part of the Clemson Family.
ACCN cameras will have access to daily Clemson football activities along with a variety of off-the-field events. The series will feature:

– Preparations, both on the practice field and inside Clemson’s Allen N. Reeves Football Complex, for the Tigers’ season opener against Georgia Tech on Thursday, Aug. 29.
– Team dinners, fun and fellowship, and friendly competition in the various amenities of “Dabo’s World” – bowling, golf simulator and more.
– Travel with student-athletes during summer internships and service trips to see how P.A.W. Journey, a Clemson leadership initiative, helps the Tigers develop and give back.
– First-hand accounts from Clemson’s offensive and defensive coordinators, and many of the former Tigers who are on Swinney’s staff.

Clemson Football: 5 sophomores who’ll make an impact in 2019 (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

1. Trevor Lawrence
https://syracusefan.com/javascript:void(0)
Topping off our list is the best sophomore in the nation.
Trevor Lawrence took over as the starter at quarterback for Clemson football last season four games into the season. He grew as the year progressed and eventually led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season that included an ACC Championship and 44-16 win over Alabama in the National Championship game.
Lawrence was named the Offensive MVP of the National Championship.
As he enters this season, Trevor Lawrence is considered one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. He is one of the top players in the country, no doubt, and will only get better after another summer of workouts.

The BRL gang helps you through the start of the summer months with an in-depth discussion about all things Louisville Cardinals.

Welcome to Louisville Cardinals purgatory.

As the spring not so subtly transitions to summer, college sports fans around the country long to find anything sports-related to get them through these long months.
Louisville football and “spring” (winter) ball have long been over, the basketball season and March madness concluded, and now the NBA finals are over. Once the College World Series ends in the coming weeks, the rest of June, July, and August will feel like an eternity in anticipation of Louisville football’s season opener on September 2nd.

Luckily for Cards fans, the new football coaching staff is landing recruits at an unheard of rate. Not to mention new updates to the football and basketball facilities, and a continued transition from the Jurich era to the Vince Tyra era in the athletic director’s office.
And thankfully for CardNation, you have the Big Red Louie gang to help ease you through the summer months.
In episode 7 of the Big Red Louie podcast, we had 10-plus new recruits to discuss and did so at length. We also talked about
Louisville basketball’s incoming player’s expectations for 2019, and who might be the most important piece to the Cards hopeful run to the Final Four in Atlanta.

Mack Brown and the UNC Tar Heels had a good weekend, securing two in-state 2020 commitments after the Showtime Camp on Saturday.

East Surry athlete Jefferson Boaz committed the same day as the camp. Lee County defensive back Jayden Chalmers committed on Tuesday. The addition of Boaz and Chalmers pushed the number of 2020 commitments to 18 for Brown. Together, they propelled the UNC class to No. 8 in the nation according to 247Sports and No. 3 in the ACC. It would be UNC’s first top-10 recruiting class since 2007, when North Carolina was ranked No. 10.

Brown, who took over for Larry Fedora in December, now has eight in-state commitments for the class of 2020.

Boaz grew up a UNC fan. His father, Jay, played for the Tar Heels under Brown in the early 90s. The 6-8, 230 pound Boaz played quarterback and defensive end for the Cardinals, leading East Surry to an 11-4 record and an appearance in the 1AA state championship game, where the Cardinals fell to Tarboro, 50-10.

As the starting quarterback, Boaz threw for 1,611 yards and 20 touchdowns his junior year. He also finished with 37 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. UNC already has two quarterback commits in the class of 2020 so a position switch is likely on the horizon for Boaz, who also plays basketball and baseball and caught 14 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns last year.

https://chopchat.com/2019/06/19/fsu-football-3-winning-traits-noles-need-show-2019/ (chopchat.com; Hunt)

FSU football needs to do a lot of things to return to their glory days competing for ACC and national titles. Here’s three traits they need in 2019.

FSU football would like to say they have probably thought of the season briefly and flushed it completely out of its system.

It’s kinda like one of those blowout games where nothing goes right and you don’t even look at the tape of the game afterwards.
The Noles went 5-7 but were closer to 3-9 than 6-6 if we want to keep it real. They were bad and had a lot of bad traits stemming from the toxic culture surrounding the program.
Somewhere between the national championship and 2014 season that saw them repeatedly snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, things changed.
The Noles were no longer that juggernaut that destroyed teams or put fear in their heart before walking onto the field.

It didn’t hurt they lost a generational quarterback and continued to miss in recruiting at the position. However, somewhere along the way the Noles lost their competitive edge.
It’s something they need to find in a hurry or we could see the program with a new coaching staff after this season.

Let’s take a look at three winning traits they need to exhibit in 2019.

TREVOR LAWRENCE? CAM AKERS? AJ DILLON? JUSTYN ROSS? TRAVIS ETTIENNE? BRYCE PERKINS? WHO ARE THE TOP 10 PLAYERS IN THE ACC?

https://saturdayblitz.com/2019/06/19/college-football-memories-transfer-rules-2019-blitz-podcast/ (saturdayblitz.com; Bigalke)

Bob Bowlsby’s recent comments on college football transfers sparked the first segment of discussion in this week’s edition of the Saturday Blitz Podcast.

One of the beauties of college football is that it is a language that translates across regions. You can take just about any topic and fire up a discussion on the matter, whether your partner in the conversation is from the Deep South or the Midwest or the Rockies or one of the coasts.
We test that theory in the latest edition of the Saturday Blitz Podcast. With John unable to join the conversation this week, we turn to Saturday Blitz editor Connor Muldowney as a guest for today’s discussion.

Connor and I start by talking through a subject that has become a personal favorite for the podcast: transfers. In light of Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby recently suggesting that there should be a uniform, all-sports, no-exceptions, one-year transfer rule put into place by the NCAA, we could not pass up the opportunity to dive once again into that well of conversation. A new voice in the mix offers some new perspective on the matter.

Then the conversation turns from the theoretical to the subjective, as Connor and I riff a bit about some of the things that have us most excited about the upcoming 2019 season. With college football approaching its 150th anniversary, there are plenty of storylines that have the potential to turn this year into another season of chaos in the mold of 2007.

Brooklyn Pickle’s third Syracuse-area location to open in July (PS; Pucci)

Syracuse’s north suburbs will get its first taste of Brooklyn Pickle next month as the third outpost of the popular deli is slated to open in the town of Clay.

The restaurant, located at 7175 Buckley Road in the site of the former Hafner’s Red Barn, will open Monday, July 1, vice president Craig Kowadla said.

The new spot will be much the same as the current two locations at 2222 Burnet Ave. and 1600 W. Genesee St. in Syracuse. The menu, built around oversized sandwiches, subs, salads and homemade soups, will be the same at all three locations. All three Brooklyn Pickle locations will be open Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While the former Hafner’s Red Barn closed in 2008 and was torn down last year, part of the barn’s legacy will live on inside the new Brooklyn Pickle. The dining room will feature the Red Barn Corner, decorated with a wall wrap graphic of the barn, photos of the barn and even tables made with original wood planks from the barn, Kowadla said.

Overall, the new restaurant will look “a little more modern” than the other two, Kowadla said.
After decades of operating in Syracuse, Kowadla said they’re excited to expand to the suburbs.
“It’s been a great response,” he said. “It really humbles us.”

The original Brooklyn Pickle opened on Burnet Avenue in 1975. The second location opened inside a Byrne Dairy on the city’s West Side in 1977. It later moved to a Mobil gas station and eventually to its current site on West Genesee Street in 1983.

Brooklyn Pickle is very good. The new one is maybe a mile from my house, so I am pretty excited.

To answer your question, they don't deliver at all. You can get a delivery with Grubhub though. Not sure if they deliver 728 miles away. You could give it a try. Or wait until VT plays football in the Dome again. That is going to happen in what, 10 more years, assuming the ACC stays with the same rotation in the future?

Pods can't get here fast enough.

The description of the Brooklyn Pickle reminds me of the old Danzer's on Park Ave. We used to go there on Sunday evenings when the dining halls were closed.

I think it was on Park St but your point is a good one. Both offer/offered good food, large portions and are/were homey, community oriented places people really like.
