Welcome to National Canoe Day!

There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance, adventure, solitude, and peace.
Sigurd F. Olson
There is a special day for just about every hobby nowadays, and canoeing doesn’t miss out on the fun, with its very own day of aquatic paddling celebration. Canoeing is a fantastic hobby, and along with being environmentally friendly and relaxing, its also a great form of outdoor exercise that’s suitable for all ages. It’s no surprise that canoeing gets its own day of celebration, with so many fans around the world. Canoeing is an easy activity to learn, and with some basic safety gear anyone can hit the water and enjoy this healthy hobby.

SU News

http://orangefizz.net/2019/06/ranking-syracuses-toughest-2019-games/ (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

A few months back, we projected SU’s win/loss record for the upcoming season. Twelve games later the Orange had finished with their second consecutive ten-win season. Whether that prediction is accurate or not remains to be seen. However, the level of competition Syracuse will face this year is rather clear.
We ranked all 12 games in 2019 based on projected difficulty.
12. Holy Cross (Sep. 28)
This is as close to a guaranteed win as it gets for Syracuse in 2019. The Crusaders finished 5-6 last year and were smashed by Boston College, 62-14, in their only game against a power-five opponent. This is the biggest game on Holy Cross’ 2019 calendar, but they won’t have the firepower to compete with Syracuse inside the Loud House. This matchup is very similar to when Wagner came to Central New York and it should come with a similar result.
11. at Liberty (Aug. 31)
Hugh Freeze begins his Flames era at home in Lynchburg against SU. That’s still weird to think about, right? Not only do the Orange open up against a school two years removed from the FCS, but Freeze (formerly of Ole Miss) is the head coach. The Flames do have something working in their favor: a night game to open up newly-renovated Williams Stadium. That’s about it, though.
10. Western Michigan (Sep. 21)
Row the boa… oh wait, that was the saying from a few years back with P.J. Fleck. Things are much different in Kalamazoo since the Broncos went 13-1 in 2016. Syracuse fans know that first hand after last year’s 55-42 win for the Orange to open the season. This September, Tim Lester will be back in the Dome for the first time as WMU’s head coach. Even with Jon Wassink returning at quarterback, the Broncos should be outmatched by the Orange.

With summer in full swing we are taking a look at where Clemson’s P5 opponents stand for the 2019 season. Over the summer we’ll be conducting Q&As with the SB Nation sites for opposing teams as well as providing our own scouting report. We continue with the Tigers’ Week 3 opponent: Syracuse. John Cassillo at Nunes Magician was more than willing to answer our questions.
STS: What has been the mood of the fanbase in the wake of last year’s results?
I’d say pretty excited. After a rough decade and a half, Syracuse fans were pretty excited to earn 10 wins last year and start really cashing in on the promise Dino Babers presented when he arrived. Now that everyone’s a believer, however, there may be a bit of overconfident with regard to where the Orange stands in the ACC overall. That’ll probably come back to earth a bit when the season starts and nervousness takes over once more, as it usually does. But we’re still a pretty optimistic group right now.

STS: What are some of the biggest changes to occur in the offseason?
Eric Dungey’s gone, as I’m sure several ACC fan bases are pretty happy about. SU also lost top run-stuffer Chris Slayton, three offensive linemen, the top two linebackers from last year and two more offensive weapons in Jamal Custis and Dontae Strickland. Not a short list, but a lot of teams have to replace more than that.

STS: Which players have you been keeping an eye on this offseason?
Tyrell Richards played some defensive line and linebacker last season as a reserve, but could really be a key to this year’s defense. We got some hints at what Tommy DeVito could do under center last year, so I think Syracuse fans aren’t too concerned that he’ll be able to jump in and be productive, and are excited for how the offense could look a bit more efficient with him taking the reins.
Everyone’s been pretty hyper-focused on what the offensive line could look like, though we had some injuries that kept guys out a bit plus a grad transfer addition in (South Alabama’s) Ryan Alexander. The O-line will definitely look a lot different when the Orange get to camp later this summer.

STS: What do you see as the positions of strength for this team? Potential weaknesses?
The defensive line was a major part of last year’s resurgence, collecting a program-record 43 sacks on the year. While Slayton departs, everyone else is still there, and we expect that group to be plenty aggressive once again in getting after opposing quarterbacks. SU’s wide receivers are a pretty solid and experienced group at the top of the depth chart, and there’s a lot to like about their potential with a bigger arm (DeVito) throwing to them this year. The secondary is also very deep and has a lot of upside even after last year’s breakout. Special teams brings everyone back too, and that should be a huge boost once again in the field position game.
As for potential weaknesses, there are two big areas of concern: offensive line and linebacker. Syracuse replaces a lot of production there from veteran-heavy groups last year, so there could be a bit of a learning curve early (not a great arrangement with a road game vs. Maryland and the Clemson game both in the first half of September). DeVito’s going to excel, but we’ll see how quickly he gets comfortable at QB - especially with an offensive line that will still be figuring things out.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/06/25/syracuse-football-nfl-scouts-buzzing-sleeper-prospect-evan-foster/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

NFL scouts are buzzing about Syracuse football safety Evan Foster. Here are all the details and why he’s slipping under the radar on the hill.

There’s a lot of buzz around the Syracuse football program. That’s particularly true for some of the talented SU prospects who will be eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft.
Some of the biggest noise is around a pair of senior pass-rushers in Alton Robinsonand Kendall Coleman.

Although there’s another name that’s floating under the radar that is starting to garner some serious attention: Evan Foster.

Josh Buchanan is a Phil Steele Magazine contributor and works with Draft Scout he joined Boy Green on Drive Time Sports via The Score 1260:

“Keep an eye on Evan Foster. A lot of scouts that I’ve spoken with have him as the second-best prospect (outside of Alton Robinson) coming out of Syracuse next season. There’s a strong belief among scouts that he’s going to run in the 4.4-4.5 range for his 40-yard dash. Evan is listed at 6-foot, 217 pounds or so that’s good measurables for a strong safety. There’s some buzz around him from NFL scouts that I’ve talked too.”
Evan has had a really solid career at Syracuse:
  • 105 solo tackles.
  • Seven tackles for loss.
  • Foster is the active leading tackler for the Orange (158) heading into the 2019 season.
  • Two sacks.
  • Two interceptions.
  • Seven pass deflections.
  • Played in 29 career games.
While everyone around the Syracuse program knows how talented Evan is, he was somewhat overshadowed in 2018 by freshman safety Andre Cisco.

Item: Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack returned to his network television executive roots overseeing and participating first-hand in last week’s unveiling of the new Syracuse football uniformsdown the road at partner Turning Stone Resort’s Lava Nightclub. Head coach Dino Babers certainly looked in his element as well at the free-flowing event, complete with a choreographed presentation of the new and improved on-field look, along with a chance for the most ardent members of Orange Nation to speed up the calendar to the Aug. 31 season opener for at least one evening.

Do you like the look?

We certainly applaud the 2019-? Syracuse football fashion ensemble, most certainly as compared to the departed oblong jersey numbers that registered so many complaints as unreadable from the moment they first hit the field in 2014.

But the one nit-picking element we do not like is retaining the block ‘S’ on the sides of both the new orange and white helmets. It’s simply not necessary.

When the Jake Couthamel and Paul Pasqualoni era came to an end under Nancy Cantor, she decided to go in a completely different direction with Californian Daryl Gross running the department, and he in turn hired Californian Greg Robinson to replace Pasqualoni. It also signaled a change in Orange uniform protocol.

Robinson’s first team debuted in 2005 in traditional white jerseys with sleeve stripes at home during a loss to West Virginia and a win over Buffalo (wearing white at home was a preference of Ben Schwartzwalder from the 1950s-1966 because he felt his players looked bigger in white jerseys with the traditional orange helmets) that also featured the player’s number on the helmets, another throwback look, along with a grey facemask.
In 2007, the numbers were replaced with a too large, navy blue plain block ‘S’ on each side of the helmet, and in 2008 that ‘S’ was made smaller with a white outline to better define against the orange helmet – and it’s never been abandoned since save for a couple of military appreciation games under Scott Shafer.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/06/25/syracuse-football-officially-adds-key-piece-puzzle-ot-ryan-alexander/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football has officially added grad-transfer Ryan Alexander. Here’s why he’s arguably the most important addition for the Orange in 2019.

The 10-3 season in 2018 was a really cool pinnacle moment for the Syracuse football squad. But sadly as seasons end in college football, inevitably players graduate and move on to other ventures.
Syracuse is no exception to that rule.

The Orange lost several key pieces from last year’s Camping World Bowl champs squad:

  • Eric Dungey
    • One of the best quarterbacks in program history.
  • SU will be replacing their entire starting linebacking corps (Ryan Guthrie, Kielan Whitner).
  • Chris Slayton was selected by the New York Giants in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, leaving a massive void in the middle of SU’s defensive line.
  • Jamal Custis signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs shortly after the draft on the richest guaranteed contract for any UDFA over the last two years.
But arguably the biggest loss is both offensive tackles moving on to NFL opportunities. Cody Conway was the definition of stability and consistency. He registered nearly 3,000 snaps and started over 30 games in a row over his final three seasons at left tackle.
While Koda Martin came over to the Orange for just one season, but it was a special one. At Syracuse, he lettered in 2018 after leading the squad in snaps played (1,111), per Cuse.com.
There’s a strong belief that Ryan Alexander, grad-transfer from South Alabama can have similar success at Syracuse.

The University made his addition to the squad official on Tuesday afternoon.

The talented big man started 27 games and appeared in 33 during his three seasons for South Alabama.
Ryan is listed at 6-foot-3 and 307 pounds.
He played mostly right tackle, where Koda Martin played for the Orange in 2018. But he also has had some limited experience at left tackle.
Prior to becoming an offensive lineman, he was a star tight end in high school: catching 40 balls for 400 yards and three touchdowns.

MASON GARCIA
QB, Myrtle Beach, SC

  • High School: Carolina Forest
  • Ranking: No. 361, No. 19 PRO
  • Interested Programs: Syracuse, East Carolina, Missouri, Akron, Appalachian State
There is probably no bigger need for a program than the quarterback position. Ultimately, the quarterback is the engine that drives the offense. For Syracuse, they need to address the future of the quarterback spot with their 2020 class.

They’re currently a little thin at the position, so bringing in a commit in 2020 would go a long way. Mason Garcia is one of the quarterbacks they have an offer out to.

ESPN's Chris Low wrote in his latest schedule notes article that Clemson has been 'owning the SEC' with all of the recent victories including two out of three National Championship titles against SEC power Alabama.
“For the second straight season, Clemson has two nonconference games against SEC foes -- Texas A&M at home and South Carolina on the road. Dabo Swinney is 13-5 against SEC teams since the start of the 2012 season, which includes five wins over South Carolina, three wins over Auburn, two wins over Alabama and wins over Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M.”

SEC Network Paul Finebaum told AL.com on Tuesday that the ACC is overrated besides Clemson and tried to discredit some of Swinney's biggest wins.

“It’s a completely misleading and outrageous proposition,” he said. “A preponderance of those wins from the gaudy statistic are against one school - South Carolina, which has been in transition.”

“A more intellectual way of approaching this would be to ponder what the record would be if Clemson had to play an SEC schedule with road games at Alabama and LSU opposed to Wake Forest and Boston College."
Finebaum went full Finebaum calling out the majority of the ACC programs a bunch of clowns.

“Dabo is 13-5 against SEC teams. Saban is 57-5. Which is more impressive? The SEC is the toughest conference in football. The ACC - outside of Clemson - is a clown show.”

Sounds like Finebaum isn't patiently waiting for the new ACC Network channel starting up on August 22.

100 Greatest Plays In Miami History: #60-Casey Greer Game Winning Tackle Against Syracuse 1992 (stateoftheu.com; Thomas)

In late November of the 1992 season, the Hurricanes to upstate New York to take on the #8 Orangemen of Syracuse in front of a record and rowdy crowd at the Carrier Dome.

With players like Warren Sapp and Micheal Barrow, it was a defensive struggle throughout, and the Canes held a 16-10 lead late in the fourth quarter. Down but not out, Cuse QB Marvin Graves drove his team all the way down to the Miami 22-yard line with six seconds to go.

Thanks to Casey Greer making a tackle on tight end Chris Gedney, Miami was able to escape New York with a win.

Notre Dame football has a long history of epic battles with ACC teams. Here’s how the Irish have fared over the years against those programs.
Notre Dame football may be independent, but Irish football history is full of great rivalries with several ACC teams. The recent “deal” put in place where the Irish will play five ACC teams every year is only going to eventually strengthen those rivalries.
Here is how Notre Dame football has fared historically against every team in the ACC.

Pitt
Notre Dame and Pitt have played 68 times. The Irish lead the series 47-21.
Georgia Tech
Notre Dame has faced the Yellow Jackets 35 times, including the famous “Rudy” game. The Irish lead the series 28-6-1.
Miami
The Irish and Hurricanes have met up 27 times, with Notre Dame leading the series 18-8-1.
Boston College
Boston College and Notre Dame — the only two Catholic schools who play FBS football –have met up in “The Holy War” 24 times. The Irish lead the series 15-9.
North Carolina
The Tar Heels and Irish have met 20 times, with Notre Dame leading the series 18-2.
Syracuse
After last season’s beatdown at Yankee Stadium, Notre Dame leads this series 6-3.

Is one UCLA booster pushing the Bruins to join the ACC? [LINK]
Everyone knows the Pac-12 has been a mess, both financially AND athletically (at least in the money sports - which goes back to the other problem). Now, JohnWallStreet.com is reporting that UCLA mega-booster Casey Wasserman may be advising the Bruins not to renew their GoR with the Pac-12, but his potential solution is quite bizarre... to get the Bruins to join the ACC!

Dabo Swinney vs. College FB

After going 15-0 and winning its second national championship in three years in dominating fashion, I think we would all agree here* that the Clemson Tigers are not just the class of the ACC, but of all of college football. So a victory over the Tigers is both rare and precious.

How have other teams in the ACC fared against the nation's best program, and how does that compare with teams outside of the conference? To find out, let's look at Clemson's record vs. all FBS opponents during the Dabo Swinney era...

Louisville football faces a gauntlet of tough teams in 2019, but these three players may prove to be the toughest matchups.

Heading into the 2019 season, Louisville football will have to deal with one of the toughest schedules in the country.

The Cards already play in one of the best divisions in college football in the ACC Atlantic, but this season will include two college football playoff teams, and cross-division games against a top 25 Virginia squad and a trip to Miami.

Having one of the best schedules in the country also means that Louisville will have to contend with a lot of the better players in the country.

According to the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook, Louisville will face five of the 15 favorites to win the Heisman trophy, and we have another name that doesn’t even make Vegas’s list.

Let’s take a look at the three players that could throw a real kink in Louisville’s efforts to rebound in 2019.

https://dailycaller.com/2019/06/25/jimbo-fisher-bleacher-report-jameis-dressed/ (dailycaller.com; Hookstead)

Jameis Winston reportedly played a pivotal role in the downfall of Florida State’s football program.

Bleacher Report published an unreal profile about the Seminoles and former head coach Jimbo Fisher, and it shines an unreal light on how it all went so wrong.

FSU used to be a powerhouse program. The past few seasons, they’ve been a joke. One person who reportedly played a massive role in the downfall was none other than their Heisman winning quarterback.

An unnamed former assistant told BR the moment Jameis Winston, who was accused of sexual assault in college, stepped on the field for warmups while suspended against Clemson was the moment the floodgates opened. The future first overall pick was suspended after multiple issues, and it was a major storyline in college football back in 2014. (RELATED: Former Florida State Quarterback Deondre Francois Will Walk On For Lane Kiffin At FAU)

The same profile claimed two more coaches confirmed the young quarterback was a “key figure in the program’s collapse.”

A post shared by Jameis Winston (@jaboowins3) on Jan 8, 2018 at 4:38pm PST
I’d suggest you all read the entire profile. It’s truly mind-boggling just how bad it got in Tallahassee by the time Jimbo dipped out for Texas A&M.
As for the moment when Jameis took the field while suspended to warm up in full pads, I remember exactly where I was at that moment.

Some buddies and I were sitting in the lounge of his apartment watching the game with some beers before going out for the night, and we couldn’t believe what we were seeing. The dude was suspended and going through an entire warmup. I think there’s a real possibility he thought nobody would stop him from trying to play.

https://saturdayblitz.com/2019/06/25/oklahoma-state-rescinds-commit-offer-after-taking-visit-rival/ (satrudayblitz.com; Chunbley)

Oklahoma State football has rescinded an offer to a commit after he took a visit to a rival program. Is this too far for the staff or does it make sense?
Recruiting, like football, is a game. Although one takes place on the gridiron while the other is usually done over the phone or at the dinner table, the similarities are undeniable.

To succeed, it requires a relentless work ethic and some God-given talent. There’s no question that loyalty, integrity, and accountability also play a vital role in the two separate commodities. That was on full display in Stillwater, Okla., last weekend.

After securing a commitment from three-star recruit Myles Price earlier this month, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys celebrated. The Pokes’ longstanding pipeline in the Lone Star State appeared alive and well after the Colony, Texas native chose to play for the Orange and Black over offers from nearly 15 other Power Five programs.

An ultra-athletic receiver, Price is listed as a top-100 player in the state of Texas and the 657th rated player nationally by 247Sports. The undersized (5-8, 160 pounds) playmaker gained over 1500 yards from scrimmage as a junior last season and had the look of a classic OSU slot receiver.

Mr. Cheapskate’s guide to Ithaca: 12 fun things to do for under $50 (PS; D'Imperio)

Ithaca is one of Upstate New York’s most popular and visited small cities. Because of the number of visitors coming in and out of town to the two great international universities (Ithaca College and Cornell University), the city can be a bit pricey.
Here are a dozen places to go, things to do, and foods to enjoy on a Mr. Cheapskate customized day in Ithaca. You will eat, you will drink, you will make a craft, you will come home with a souvenir wine glass and you will see a museum filled with brains…and all on a budget of $50. Actually, we are pretty proud of ourselves because all of this and more clocked in at just under budget, $49.69. Enjoy your day in Ithaca where they say, “Ithaca is Gorges!"

#1 See the remains of one of the largest whales in North America

The Museum of the Earth is one of Upstate’s great treasures. A wholly modern museum dedicated to the millions of years of history of our world. The dramatic entranceway has you descending several levels as if you are actually going underground. The exhibits and displays are great, especially for kids. The whole atmosphere is peaceful and serene with lots of sunlight splashing through the facility.
And look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no….it’s a whale! The hulking skeleton of North American Right Whale #2030 (catchy name, huh?) lords over the whole surroundings. The story of this 44-foot whale is quite poignant in that it got trapped in fishing nets in May of 1999 and succumbed to its injuries. This museum went to Cape May, New Jersey to bring the carcass back to this museum. You will be fascinated to find out why tons of horse manure were vital in the preservation of the carcass and skeleton. A great museum!
