Welcome to National Ice Cream Sundae Day!

Ice cream sundaes—which are ice cream desserts with one or more scoops of ice cream with sauces or syrups, often with other toppings such as fruits, maraschino cherries, nuts, sprinkles, and whipped cream—are enjoyed on National Ice Cream Sundae Day. The "classic" ice cream sundae has vanilla ice cream topped with a flavored sauce or syrup, such as chocolate or strawberry, as well as whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Some variations of the sundae include the banana split, knickerbocker glory, turtle sundae, and tin roof sundae. Sundaes are also often topped with heated sauces or syrups such as hot fudge, butterscotch, and caramel.

There are a few stories as to how and where ice cream sundaes got their start. One says they got their start in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, in 1881. There, George Hallauer ordered an ice cream dish at Ed Berner's soda fountain. His dish gained popularity, and other nearby fountains began serving it. It was George Giffy, who owned a fountain in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, who decided to serve it only on Sundays—hence the name it received.

Another story says that in Evanston, Illinois, in the 1890s, moralists were speaking out against drinking soda water on the Sabbath. In response, confectioners decided to create "Sundays," which had ice cream and flavored syrups instead of soda water. Another early name for the dessert was "Soda-less Soda." In order to remove any connection to the Sabbath, "Sundays" eventually became known as "sundaes."

Other cities have claimed to be the originator of the ice cream sundae, including Ann Arbor, Michigan; Ithaca, New York; Norfolk, Virginia; and Washington, D.C. No matter where they were created, they were wildly popular by the turn of the twentieth century and were served in dishes shaped like tulips that became known as sundae glasses. Around this time, many variations of the ice cream sundae were created as well.

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re taking a look at the secondary, who will look to build upon an auspicious 2018 season.

WHO’S OUT
Syracuse is still waiting on safety/nickelback Antwan Cordy, who could return for a sixth season after being granted two medical hardship waivers.
Cordy was SU’s primary nickelback during the 2018 season after playing at safety for most of his career. During his career, he’s started 24 games and recorded 114 tackles.
Cordy has been participating in summer conditioning, though he did miss the final three games of the season due to personal reasons, and also didn’t appear on the spring practice roster.
Other than Cordy, Syracuse lost backup safety Tyrone Perkins, who exhausted his eligibility. He was primarily used as a special teams player.
PROJECTED STARTERS
During the spring game, Syracuse listed Christopher Fredrick and Carl Jones as its starting cornerbacks, though Jones was listed atop the depth chart because Scoop Bradshaw was injured throughout the spring.
Frederick, a three-year starter at cornerback, is locked into the starting role. He finished fifth on the team in tackles with 56 and finished second on the squad with three interceptions.
Bradshaw was dinged up in 2018, but still managed to start 10 games and appear in all 13. He finished with 27 tackles.

With the football season less than 60 days from opening, today we take an early look at each of the Tigers' 12 opponents for the 2019 season starting with their Week 3 opponent, the Syracuse Orange.
With the football season less than 60 days from opening, today we take an early look at each of the Tigers' 12 opponents for the 2019 season starting with their Week 3 opponent, the Syracuse Orange.
Head Coach: Dino Babers enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Orange, and his offensive acumen has been on display in each of the first three.
In 2018, Babers won American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year honors for the third time in his seven seasons as a head coach. Babers guided the Orange to their first 10-win season since 2001 and a No. 15 ranking in the final AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches polls after being picked last in the ACC during the preseason.

He directed an offense that ranked 11th nationally in scoring (40.2 points per game) and set the program record with 523 points last year. The Orange topped 50 points, a school-record, five times and scored 40-plus points in eight out of 13 games.
Orange on offense: While the Orange's offensive philosophy, which makes normal hurry-up, no-huddle teams look like they are operating at a snail's pace, is the brainchild of Babers.
The man tasked with orchestrating the offense is fourth-year offensive coordinator Mike Lynch. Lynch oversaw an offense that set school records for points (523) and rushing touchdowns (38) in 2018. Lynch was the Orange's co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2016-17. Since his arrival, Syracuse has posted three of the top four total offensive figures in team history, including 6,031 yards (No. 2) last season.
The challenge for quarterback coach Kirk Martin’s group is to replace the production of Eric Dungey, who ended his career as one of the most statistically accomplished players in ACC history. In 2018, Dungey accounted for 60 percent of Syracuse’s total yards and 33 of its 60 offensive touchdowns.
The Orange on defense: The Orange's defense is led by fourth-year coordinator Brian Ward.
Ward led a defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in five categories and recorded a school-record 43 sacks in 2018. He also coached all-ACC linebacker Ryan Guthrie, who led the league last year with 107 tackles. Since 2016, four Ward pupils (Guthrie, Zaire Franklin, Parris Bennett, Kielan Whitner) have recorded 100-tackle seasons.
This season, the defense should be one of Ward's best since arriving in Syracuse, as his squad returns seven starters from last year's team.

http://orangefizz.net/2019/07/who-are-syracuses-2020-edge-rushers/ (orangefizz.net; Shults)

SU edge rushing stalwarts Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman both have just a year of eligibility remaining. And with so many first time offensive tackle starters on the schedule, both players can expect to record monstrous seasons. But after they graduate, who will replace potentially the best edge rush tandem in SU history? We’ll take a look at three players from the past three recruiting classes that could fill the void.
Kingsley Jonathan – Junior
Jonathan often rotates in when Coleman or Robinson need a breather. Last year Jonathan finished the year with five sacks and six tackles for loss. Obviously those numbers would be even higher with more playing time. But five sacks for a backup edge rusher is extraordinary. Babers has done a great job of building depth across the defensive line, and Jonathan easily steps in with little dip in production. He flips his hips to maneuver around offensive tackles very well, and once past the blocker, does a great job of moving laterally.
Caleb Okechukwu – Redshirt Freshman
Okechukwu redshirted last season, and only played in one game against Louisville where he didn’t record a stat. At 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, he fits the mold of an Orange edge rusher. While he likely won’t make the two-deep lineup this season, he was one of SU’s highest rated recruits in the 2018 class according to ESPN. Besides Syracuse, Okechukwu also had offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Arizona.
Jason Munoz – Freshman
Munoz has yet to play a down of college football, but originally signed with Miami and Mark Richt until he stepped down as the Hurricanes head coach. Then Babers snatched up the former 3-star recruit in January. Munoz, along with 13 other freshmen enrolled on July 5th. At 6-foot-4, 275 Munoz is big for an edge rusher, and will likely fulfill more of a strongside defensive end role. But he’s very quick and fills gaps nicely, opening up one on one situations for edge rushers.

http://orangefizz.net/2019/07/expectations-rise-for-sus-2018-recruiting-class/ (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Evaluating recruiting classes is a fluid process. For example, Syracuse’s 2018 group now looks even better than it did on signing day after more-than-solid freshman seasons from guys like Andre Cisco and Taj Harris. The Orange’s 2018 cycle has proven to be the most productive for the program since Dino Babers took over three years ago. With uncertainty surrounding Syracuse’s latest two classes, the 2018 recruits are going to have to carry even more of the load this season.
Cisco figures to be a huge part of the SU defense again this fall. These days, you can’t even go on twitter without seeing pre-season praise for the Orange safety. He’ll get the chance this year to silence the critics that question how “lucky” his seven interceptions were. Pro Football Focus seems to think his rookie year wasn’t a fluke.

Andre Cisco was a master with the ball in the air while in coverage last season. pic.twitter.com/wF3MobpDzg
— PFF College (@PFF_College) July 7, 2019
Offensively, Taj Harris leads the way after an impressive first year in Babers’ fast-paced offense. He’s my leading candidate to lead the Orange in receiving yards this year. Harris showed a ton of promise in a freshman year that could have been even better statistically. No one should be questioning his talent at this point in the game.
Honestly, putting more pressure on the other 2018 guys may be the logical play at this point for the SU coaches. There are plenty of guys in that group who have shown potential. Take a guy like Trill Williams, a former four-star recruit who finished second on the team among freshman last year with 31 tackles. Williams started four games for the Orange and can play both nickel and corner. While he’s projected to start the year at nickel, he could challenge veteran Scoop Bradshaw for the second starting corner job at some point in the season.

Syracuse Football 2019 Predictions

https://247sports.com/college/syracuse/LongFormArticle/Syracuse-Orange-Football-Recruiting-Highest-Rated-Recruits-Since-2000-133476461/ (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football recruiting has been an interesting thing to monitor and track over the last two decades. The Orange program has been through its share of ups and downs during that time span as they attempted to rebuild into national relevancy once again. Finally, in 2018, they were able to do that under head coach Dino Babers, the program's fifth head coach since 2000. Syracuse finished 10-3, won the Camping World Bowl, and finished in the top 15 in the final polls. It was a tremendous year.
Over that time period since 2000, Syracuse football recruiting has had its share of ups and downs as well. They have had strong classes with many multi-year contributors, highly rated prospects who signed with the Orange and gave the fans hope. CuseNation.com went back through each class from the 2000 recruiting cycle through the 2019 class to find the 10 most highly regarded players to sign with Syracuse.

What we found were ups and downs that somewhat mirrored the program during that time.
#10 ADAM ROSNER
Adam Rosner was considered one of the best prep players in the 2006 class. The 6-foot-6, 310 pound offensive lineman played at Milford Academy and was rated a four star prospect. He was ranked as the No. 13 prep player overall and fourth best prep offensive tackle. For then head coach Greg Robinson, who was attempting to rebuild the program, landing Rosner was a big deal.
Rosner, however, did not completely live up to such a high ranking, though he did contribute during his career. Rosner was at Syracuse for five years. He redshirted as a true freshman, then played in eight games as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, Rosner was a key special teams contributor and saw action in nine games. That included his first career start. During his junior season, Rosner played in all 12 Syracuse games including six starts. However, as a senior, he lost the starting left guard spot to Zack Chibane and only appeared in two games.

http://www.wholehogsports.com/news/2019/jul/07/lb-allison-hoping-arkansas-morris-comes-calling-ag/ (wholehogsports.com; Dawson)

A former SMU linebacker commit is hoping to get another chance to play for Arkansas coach Chad Morris and his staff.
Syracuse linebacker Tre Allison (6-2, 233 pounds) entered the transfer portal on Friday and is hoping to hear soon from Morris.

Allison, a former three-star recruit from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, chose the Mustangs over Mississippi State and others, but changed his commitment to Syracuse once Morris and his staff left SMU for Arkansas.
He announced his flip to Syracuse from SMU on Dec. 10, 2017, the same day that fellow SMU commits Mike Woods and Silas Robinson announced they were following Morris to Arkansas.

“They were all down-to-earth people that made it feel like home (at SMU),” Allison said Sunday of the Razorbacks' coaching staff. “If Arkansas offers me, I won’t need any more time to think. It would be great.”

Allison redshirted last season at Syracuse and would have to sit out next season under NCAA rules. He would have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2020.

He had 275 tackles, 9 pass breakups, 5 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries in his high school career at John Tyler.

Allison had 89 of those stops as a senior, when he also 9 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions and 1 forced fumble while serving as a captain.

“My strength is being able to read through play and react,” Allison said. “ I’m good at not getting caught in the trash of all the linemen. My weakness is wanting to be on every play.”

Allison is one of three Syracuse linebackers who have entered the transfer portal this summer. He said he did so for “personal reasons.”

https://theclemsoninsider.com/2019/07/07/etiennes-success-comes-from-his-ability-to-stay-humble/ (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

Growing up in Jennings, Louisiana, Travis Etienne always dreamed about being one of college football’s best running backs, but now that it is happening, it is still kind of surreal to him when he thinks about it.
“It is just crazy to me,” he said. “I am a small-town guy who just came out here and took a chance.”
Etienne took a chance by coming to Clemson. He always envisioned he would play at LSU or somewhere in the SEC. But when Swinney and the Tigers reached out to him and gave him the opportunity to come play for them, he thought why not.

Since then he has become one of the best running backs in the country and is a serious Heisman Trophy candidate heading into his junior year.

“It has paid off for me. It just goes to show hard work does not go unnoticed,” Etienne said.

The Pittsburgh Panthers have gone from playing the role of spoiler to ACC title contender during a few seasons under head coach Pat Narduzzi. The Panthers have won a lot of close games while using their strengths to cover their weaknesses, with both changing periodically during Narduzzi’s tenure.

This year, the reigning Coastal Division champs are looking for development from quarterback Kenny Pickett as they try to not just compete for an ACC title but give favorite Clemson a run for its money.

Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel ranked all 130 FBS teams in the country entering the 2019 season. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 130 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 49: Pittsburgh

Coach: Pat Narduzzi (28-24 entering fifth season; 28-24 overall)
2018 record: 7-7 overall, 6-2 in ACC; first in Coastal Division
Look back: The Panthers had the nation’s No. 18 rushing attack last season, helping them thrive in the Coastal Division. They faltered against Miami and were blown out by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game, but Pitt showed grit throughout the season and earned a trip to the Sun Bowl. The Panthers fell 14-13 to Stanford in the bowl.

https://saturdayblitz.com/2019/07/07/notre-dame-football-time-fighting-irish-join-conference/ (saturdayblitz.com; Cox)

Notre Dame football has been an Independent for too long. It is time for the Irish to finally make a change and join a conference.
In college football, conferences mean everything. Being a team in the Power Five gives you a step ahead of other teams. You face tougher competition, bring more people to games, and become more likely to play in a quality bowl game. The exception to this rule in recent memory has been the men on the Notre Dame football team.

Notre Dame has been independent for decades, but that needs to change. The Fighting Irish have been successful, but they must have a perfect season now to make it to the College Football Playoff. If they had a conference championship, they could make it to the playoff with a mistake along the way.

Although Notre Dame is based in the heart of the Big Ten, the rest of its sports programs are in the ACC. Notre Dame football should follow suit. The ACC could use them to battle against Clemson, and Notre Dame would get all the benefits of being in a big conference.

I know being independent from all conferences has its benefits. Notre Dame gets a lot of freedom to schedule who they play. If they need to rebuild, they don’t have to play the same powerhouse teams every year. However, if you want to be one of the best teams in the country, you need a strong conference schedule.

Being independent works for smaller school, but Notre Dame’s expectations have grown too high for it to work anymore. If they join the ACC, they would get to compete for ACC Championships, have higher chances to play in key bowl games, and get more room for error in the regular season.

Miami Hurricanes LB Zach McCloud ready for 4th season as starter (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Miami Hurricanes linebacker Zach McCloud is part of a unique trio with Shaq Quarterman and Michael Pinckney entering their fourth seasons as starters as a unit.
Zach McCloud, Shaq Quarterman and Michael Pinckney came in as true freshmen in 2016 and were all thrust into the roles of starters for the Miami Hurricanes. Former head coach Mark Richt challenged the media to come up with another triad of linebackers who started together at the time for three seasons.
Finding a triumvirate at LB who started together for four seasons in this era is nearly impossible. Players who start early in their collegiate careers usually leave early for the NFL. McCloud has often been the forgotten of the three LBs behind Quarterman and Pinckney during his career.

While Quarterman and Pinckney have been top five on the Miami Hurricanes in tackles the last three seasons, McCloud has usually been a few spots behind that. The creation of the striker position for Miami has taken snaps away from McCloud. After starting 11 games in each of his first two seasons, McCloud started nine in 2018.

Links, news and rumors - 7/4/19

From Washington Post: Louisiana Lafayette football sets new standard for concession prices.
To say they are “slashing” prices might be a bit strong, but ULL is definitely following the lead of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons in offering affordable concessions to try to bring fans back to the stadium. Here are some of their prices according to the Washington Post article:
Fan Favorites:
— Hot Dog, $1
— Popcorn, $1
— Fried Potato Chips, $1
— Cheese Quesadilla, $2
— 16-oz. Domestic Can, $2
— 20-oz. Fountain Soda, $2
— 20-oz. Bottled Dasani Water, $2
— Hamburger/Cheeseburger, $3
— Pretzel, $3
— Frito Chili Pie, $3
— ICEE, $3
— Cheese Nachos, $3
— Large Popcorn, $3
The Falcons found that even though their profit margin was less per item sold, their total food salesincreased a whopping 50% - and not unrelated, their merchandise sales also increased as fans started arriving earlier and spending more time (and money) at the stadium.

Will we see similar prices in ACC stadiums? Let's hope so.

Most Underrated ACC players 2019

From Athlon Sports: College Football's Top 50 Underrated Players for 2019
Here are the ACC-related players:

Jalen Elliott, S, Notre Dame
Teammate and fellow safety Alohi Gilman was preseason All-American for Athlon Sports, but Elliott shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s made significant strides over the last two years and delivered a breakout 2018 campaign. Elliott recorded 67 stops and four picks, defended 11 passes and forced a fumble as part of Notre Dame’s run to the CFB Playoff.

Dez Fitzpatrick, WR, Louisville
Fitzpatrick caught 45 passes for 699 yards and nine touchdowns as a freshman in 2017 but watched his totals drop (31 receptions for 422 yards) due to inconsistent play at quarterback last year. New coach Scott Satterfield should help the passing game improve this season, allowing Fitzpatrick to push for All-ACC honors as the No. 1 target for the Louisville offense.

Reggie Floyd, S, Virginia Tech
With 10 returning starters in place, Virginia Tech’s defense should rebound in 2019. Floyd is one of the few seniors expected to contribute on defense and his leadership should be crucial for coordinator Bud Foster. Floyd had a solid 2018 campaign, recording two interceptions and 88 tackles (9.5 for a loss). He enters 2019 with five career picks.

Christopher Fredrick, CB, Syracuse
Fredrick has been a key cog in the development and overall improvement of Syracuse’s secondary the last three years. The Georgia native enters 2019 with 31 consecutive starts and has recorded 121 stops (five for a loss), five interceptions and 13 passes defended since 2016.

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/07/enrollment-vs-attendance-acc-vs-others.html (RX; HM)

Enrollment vs. Attendance, ACC vs. Others
A while back, we looked at attendance vs. enrollment within the ACC [LINK]. Then I got to thinking: how does that compare to schools in other conferences?

For example, Temple has 4X the enrollment of Wake Forest or Duke and plays in a stadium twice the size of Wake's, yet the Owls average only about 2,000 more fans per game... If that's true on the bottom end of the ACC attendance, what about the top end?

The defending national champion Clemson Tigers trailed the Florida Gators in average attendance per game by about 2,000 fans last season. Florida has 2.25X the enrollment of Clemson.

In fact, the Gators average about 1.5X their student body at every home football game. By comparison, the Miami Hurricanes averaged 3.6X their student enrollment. Even FSU, which had a terrible season, averaged 1.6X their student body.

Not to be picking on the Gators, by comparing attendance to enrollment we see that Texas A&M (1.5X), Ohio State (1.7X) and Texas (1.9X) all draw between 150% to 190% of their enrollment - it's just that those schools have HUGE student bodies!

Tiny Andes, NY: Charming shops, good eats ... and a secret war? (PS; D'Imperio)

Tiny Andes, with a population of just over 1,000 is a perfect place for a weekend get-away. And many people do head to this mountaintop burg in all seasons. As the real estate people like to say: “We are only three and a half hours to the George Washington Bridge.”
Andes is best visited on a Friday and Saturday as the rest of the week this Northern Catskills village can be as sleepy as, well, Rip Van Winkle. But on the weekend, it pops with downstaters, locals, bus groups and nature lovers seeking the fresh mountain air and a touch of country chic along the short but lively Main Street.

The buildings along the downtown area are a mixture of Victoriana and mountain rusticity. Many of the buildings are gaily painted and overflowing flower boxes proliferate. There are boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, some top-notch eateries, a general store and even a combination winery/cider distillery, plus a small museum.

Amidst all this fun and frivolity in the clouds, a visitor really should learn the reason Andes ended up in the New York State history books.

Because of a war. And a sheriff who was shot to death.

The Anti-Rent War is little known in other parts of the New York State, but Andes was at the violent center of it on August 7, 1845.
