Welcome to Pi Approximation Day!

Pi Approximation Day celebrates the pi symbol (π) and its importance to mathematics. The symbol is a Greek letter, and it is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first digits of this ratio are 3.14159, and the number continues infinitely without a pattern, being an irrational number. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal point. The symbol "π" was first used in 1706 by William Jones. It gained in popularity after being used by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

Pi can be expressed as the fraction 22/7, which is an approximation of its actual value (hence the word "approximation" in the day's title). Pi Approximation Day is particularly celebrated in countries that write their dates in the date/month format, where today's date would be written as 22 July or 22/7. Those who write their dates in the month/date format are more likely to celebrate Pi Day. However, both holidays can be celebrated no matter where one lives. Pi Approximation Day may have first been celebrated at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Syracuse Football: Lee Kpogba can steal starting LB spot as freshman (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football has to replace their starting linebacking corps. Here’s why Lee Kpogba could steal one of the spots as a freshman.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, the Syracuse football program is replacing their starting linebacking corps again heading into 2019.

It has been a common theme over the last handful of years under Syracuse head coach Dino Babers.

To be specific, this is the third straight year this has occurred. The reason being Babers prefers veterans with football and life experience:

If we continue on this trajectory, it seems like Babers will go the veteran route again. While he will have that choice in 2019 to go back down that well, it won’t be his only option.

Dino will be tempted by a pair of star freshmen linebackers in Mikel Jones and Lee Kpogba.

Both are four-star recruits from the latest cycle. While they’re young, they bring star power and the Owner of Football Gameplan Emory Hunt recently explained why Babers should heavily consider shifting his strategy in 2019:

“Lee Kpogba was a talented running back in high school so he has the athleticism to be a very good college linebacker for Syracuse. Lee gives the Orange someone that can fly sideline-to-sideline vs the run. He’s someone that can match up one-on-one in space vs the pass. Kpogba has ridiculous strength for the position.”
Even with all of that being said, is it realistic that Lee Kpogba can step in and steal a starting role in the ACC?

We caught up with Emory Hunt to ask him:
“I think it’s up to him on how he quickly he grabs the system. He’s going to be a valuable asset defensively. The speed at the LB position in this era is invaluable. Dino Babers has a good one.”

Last year, Syracuse lost to Clemson by just four points.

Two years ago, Syracuse beat Clemson.

So Syracuse might be the only ACC team with a decent chance of beating the defending national champions this year. Syracuse, which will host Clemson on Sept. 14, won 10 games last year and finished No. 15 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.

But Orange coach Dino Babers does not want his team to overlook the first two foes on its schedule.
Liberty, whose new coach is ex-Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze, will host Syracuse on Aug 31. Maryland, whose new coach is former Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, will host Syracuse the following week.

“The first game that we have is a quality opponent with an outstanding head coach that’s known for his offensive genius,” Babers said last week at ACC football media days in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It’s going to be a difficult game for us, especially since we don’t have any tape of him with that personnel.

The month-long dead period in college football recruiting comes to a close Wednesday, which means high school prospects will begin re-connecting and meeting up with college football coaches and programs soon.

But the break hasn’t completely stopped recruiting news from trickling in.

On Sunday, Rivals four-star defensive end Latarie Kinsler Jr., who holds more than 20 verbal scholarship offers, cut his list down to a final six of Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee and Virginia:

The 6-foot-4, 208-pound defensive lineman, out of Pahokee High School (Pahokee, Florida), has already taken an official visit to Syracuse, and is projected as a future member of the Orange by 247Sports.

Oregon’s recruiting class is ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 Conference and consists of four edge rushers - outside linebacker Jaden Navarrette, Peter Latu and Jackson LaDuke and defensive end Jake Shipley.

Last week, ACC football players and head coaches as well as the media that cover the league gathered at the Westin in Uptown Charlotte for the annual ACC Kickoff. The event is a welcome reminder that college football season is almost upon us.

The new ACC Network also made its Kickoff debut, as the TV channel’s talent was introduced and made available for interviews. We also had a chance to hear from the league’s four new head coaches – Mack Brown, Geoff Collins, Manny Diaz and Scott Satterfield.

After spending two days in Charlotte consuming all things ACC football, here are my three takeaways from the event:

The fledgling ACC Network introduced its Game day talent for the upcoming football season -- from left, Matt Hasselbeck, Katie George , Chris Cotter, Mark Herzlich, Kelsey Riggs, Wes Durham, Roddy Jones, and Eric Wood --during the 2019 ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.

ACC Network is here to stay
At past ACC Kickoff events, the theme always seemed to be that the ACC Network was coming but not yet. Well, it’s finally here, and it’s obvious that the league and ESPN are fully invested in making the new network a success.

The talent lineup is impressive and features well-respected radio personalities Mark Packer and Wes Durham, as well as a slew of former ACC football stars turned analysts – EJ Manuel, Mark Richt, Eric Mac Lain and Roddy Jones, just to name a few. Original programming will also feature four new series – "The Bowden Dynasty," "Greatest Ever: 2018 Clemson Tigers," "All Access: Louisville Football" and "ACC Traditions."

ACC/SEC rivalry brewing
Lately, there has been no love lost between the ACC and the SEC, and that was apparent at the ACC Kickoff.

It started after Clemson defeated Alabama 44-16 in the national championship game, and since then, most of the rhetoric coming out of Tuscaloosa has featured excuses that have served to downplay the Tigers’ convincing victory over the Crimson Tide.

So, it’s no surprise that Clemson was a hot topic at SEC media days and Alabama’s excuses were also a hot topic at the ACC Kickoff.

Things really got heated when it was reported that Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses said that Georgia was the hardest team he played against last season. Clemson offensive lineman John Simpson fired back and said Notre Dame was the best team that the Tigers played last year. Of course, Paul Finebaum of the SEC Network picked up the comments and ran with them and now, it feels like we not only have a rivalry between Clemson and Alabama but between the ACC and the SEC.

Dazz Newsome knows how to find the end zone.

Last season, Newsome, the University of North Carolina receiver who starred at Hampton High School, was one of just seven players in the nation to score touchdowns via rush, reception and punt return. In all, the sophomore appeared in all 11 games for UNC last season. He caught 44 passes for 506 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Entering his junior season, the Tar Heels - including fellow Hampton Roads native Dre Bly, UNC's first-year cornerbacks coach, are expecting another Dazz-ling season from Newsome.

"He's a guy who was recruited to play either side of the ball," Bly recalled about Newsome - who was ranked the No. 35 player in Virginia and the No. 81 athlete in the country by 247sports.com after leading the Peninsula District with 35 TDs in 13 games as a senior. "He was expected to play defensive back but there was a need at receiver - very similar to me coming out of high school. He was a guy that was very dynamic the minute he stepped on the field. He's an explosive player. I'm excited to work with him this year and see him play. Back when I was in school, we got some of the best of the best out of The 757 - out of Virginia."

Florida State fans will see a familiar face on the new ACC Network this fall.

Former FSU quarterback E.J. Manuel is joining the network as a studio analyst for football. The network will begin broadcasting on Aug. 22.

It's a process that started almost a year ago when Manuel's football career came to an end.

'When I got let go from Oakland In September, I did a meeting with a talent agency who told me about the network coming out this year," Manuel told the Tallahassee Democrat.

"And obviously, I was super excited about it because I played an ACC, past ACC champion and played in the ACC championship twice. So, obviously, being a Florida State guy, this was a perfect opportunity for me."

But really, the process started long before that.

FSU Hall of Fame cornerback and current Mississippi State defensive backs coach Terrell Buckley gave him some advice a decade ago that allowed him to get into this career path.

The schedule for the UVa football team looks a little different this year.

Right at the top, in Week One, sits the reigning Coastal Division Champion Pittsburgh Panthers.

It's the first time since 2003 the Cavaliers will start the season with an ACC opponent.

"I have to like it, because that's what our schedule is," says head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "We'll make that our ideal, whether it is, or it isn't."

Both teams talked about playing with a sense of urgency, as there are a lot of downsides to starting the season with a league opponent.

Mendenhall says, "Conference race implications, playing on the road against a team we haven't beaten, and playing at a higher level, earlier, than what most teams can do, or are expected to do in their opening game."

Virginia opened at home against Richmond last season, while Pittsburgh took on Albany.

Panthers' head coach Pat Narduzzi says, "We don't have time to mess around, and maybe be ready, and have some things to clean up. I think the biggest change we're going to see is not with the coaches, and the preparation. It's going to be the players, and their attitude. They know this is a huge game."

https://jerryratcliffe.com/can-virginia-finally-break-through-in-the-coastal/ (jerryratcliffe.com; Ratcliffe)

Is 2019 the year when Virginia football will make its breakthrough in the ACC Coastal Division?

I’m intrigued to learn where the Cavaliers are predicted to finish in the media’s preseason voting at last week’s ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte. UVA certainly left a strong impression after dominating SEC opponent South Carolina in last December’s Belk Bowl, but how will that carry over to preseason voting?

We will find out Monday when the results are released out of the Greensboro headquarters.

A couple of preseason football magazines, Athlon and Street & Smith, selected Virginia to win the Coastal Division. Others picked the Cavaliers lower, some much lower.

The Wahoos are the only member of the Coastal Division that hasn’t captured at least one division title since the ACC went to two divisions in 2005. Could this be the year of the Cavalier?

In fact, one has to trace back to 2013 to find the last time Virginia wasn’t picked last in the Coastal. In 2014, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, and ‘18, the Cavaliers were predicted to finish last in the seven-team division. In 2013, UVA was predicted to finish sixth, just ahead of Duke. The last time media figured the Cavaliers would be contenders came in 2005 and 2006 when Al Groh’s teams were selected third and fourth, respectively.

Clemson football RB Travis Etienne is close to etching his name in the record books. Here’s how close the running back is to breaking records.

Travis Etienne has had an absolutely special career through his first two years with the Clemson football program.

Etienne came in as a freshman and eventually earned massive playing time before cementing himself as the starter. As a sophomore, Etienne was named the ACC Player of the Year and was the MVP of the ACC Championship game.

As he heads into his junior season, Travis Etienne is on pace to break Clemson football records.

Just how close is he to the all-time records? Here’s a look.

Clemson Football Rushing Record Books:

Season Leaders:

Rushing Yards: Travis Etienne (1,658 yards in 2018)

  • Rushing Touchdowns: Travis Etienne (24 TDs in 2018)
Career Leaders:
  • Rushing Yards: Raymond Priester (3,966 yards)
  • Rushing Touchdowns: James Davis (47)
As you can see, Etienne already holds records for most rushing yards and touchdowns in a single season. He is on pace to leave Clemson football as the all-time leader in yards per carry (7.8) by a wide margin.

Currently, Etienne has 2,424 yards rushing for his career and 37 rushing touchdowns.

Football:
The toughest schedule in the ACC belongs to? Boston College but FSU’s isn’t far behind.

Like Georgia Tech, Florida State is stuck by circumstance. Clemson is in the division, Miami is the Seminoles’ yearly crossover opponent, and there is the rivalry against the Gators. To top it off, FSU usually throws in another quality non-conference game and this year that is against Boise State in week one. The other crossover game, against Virginia in Charlottesville, won’t be a picnic, either.
Gameday for Week 1 is set; they’re heading to Auburn vs Oregon.

TN’s very own Juan Montavlo joined the Clemson SBN affiliate, Shakin The Southland, for an in-depth preview of what Tiger fans can expect from FSU this fall. Juan gave very good reasons as to why you might be surprised by the performance of FSU’s offensive line this fall:

Our founder Bud Elliott likes to use generalized terms, and as the sporting friendly man he is, I can understand those. He’s considering win totals, output, etc. and thinks below average is the ceiling for the unit.
I see a much more positive outlook as there is some legitimate talent across the front 5. He can dismiss it as much as he wants, but the Briles offense has never relied on deep setting tackles to protect 5+ set drops. The talent is guard heavy, but it’s there. With an OL coach in Randy Clements who knows Kendall and the Briles system well, I am of the opinion average is more than attainable.
STS’ 2019 Outlook for FSU was pretty fair.

James Blackman will get the first reps but Alex Hornibrook will be given every opportunity to prove his mettle.

Recruiting:
FSU continues to add talented names to its SNL list this upcoming weekend; four-star (probably five-star) 2021 Agiye Hall has confirmed that he’s coming.

Is FSU on the verge of gaining former florida commit & three-star DE Marvin Joseph’s verbal? (VIP)

UVA Football: Expectations, for the first time in forever (augustafreepress.com; Graham)

It has been a while since UVA Football went into training camp with anything resembling expectations.

And no, writers and broadcasters picking you to finish last doesn’t qualify as expectations.

It’s not official yet, but there was a lot of feeling at this week’s ACC Kickoff that Virginia will be anointed the preseason favorite in the Coastal Division, which, wow.

It hasn’t been that long since Bronco Mendenhall was telling the UVA Board of Visitors about not having many ACC-caliber players.

(That was last summer, actually.)

If things work out the way folks who should know seem to think, Mendenhall and his team will be back in Charlotte in December for the ACC Championship Game.

Again, wow.

“Certainly it’s the goal. Any time you’re part of a conference, the goal is to win the conference championship. That’s some of the value added of being in a conference, is to win the conference championship,” said Mendenhall, who, you may remember, left BYU, a football independent, thinking at least a small bit as he made his way east that an ACC title might one day be in the cards, if he did his job right.

But the task ahead, he would soon come to realize, was going to be much harder than he had anticipated. Mike London, his predecessor, had left the cupboard bare, and the athletics administration had let the infrastructure flounder to the point that UVA football is still looking up at the likes of Wake Forest and Duke in terms of facilities.

Despite that, his team, in Year 2, went to a bowl, and in Year 3, UVA started November in first place in the Coastal.

It wasn’t meant to be, ultimately, but it was still just a pair of overtime losses, at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, that kept Virginia from a 10-win season.

Forbes just figured out something we told you 7 years ago...
ACC Network Selling Point: No Major Conference Is More Likely To Feature A Close Game
Casual viewers might tend to flip the channel when the score gets out of hand. ACC teams give them a reason to stay tuned in since they are more likely to duke it out until the final whistle.

Over the last five football seasons (2014 to 2018), 41.6% of ACC conference games ended with a scoring differential that was within one score (eight points or less). The ACC’s percentage is slightly greater than that of the Big 12 (40%), SEC (39.28%) and Pac-12 (39.25%) and comfortably ahead of the Big Ten (35.21%).

Individual ACC teams’ average scoring margins for conference games also reflect this trend. Out of the 14 teams in the league, 13 had a differential that was less than eight points per game across the five seasons. Only Clemson, whose average result was a 19.3-point win, stands as an exception to this ACC trend.

Feeling Deja Vu? For good reason... check out this post from March 2012:

In the last two seasons, only one team in the Atlantic Coast Conference has given Clemson fits.

Two years ago, Syracuse beat then No. 2 Clemson, 27-24, in the Carrier Dome. Last year, ranked third at the time, the Tigers had to rally from 10-points down in the fourth quarter for a 27-23 victory at Death Valley.

“I think that we match up really well, and that being said, Clemson is a phenomenal team with lots of talent and that is known. I think that talent wise we are catching up,” Syracuse defensive end Kendall Coleman said.

On Sept. 14 this year, Clemson returns to the spot of its last regular-season and ACC loss … the Carrier Dome. The game is already being built up as the biggest football game in Syracuse history. The Orange has even made it their homecoming game. It’s also their home and ACC opener.

Oh by the way, it will also be ABC’s Primetime game that weekend.

“Dino (Babers) has just done an unbelievable job. It’s a great place. It starts with him,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “I mean, he’s put a good staff together. They have a good philosophy in place. They’re well-coached. They recruit well. They develop well.

“You can tell that it’s a relationship-driven program. He does a great job in connecting with his players. They play hard.

Syracuse TV stations to change frequencies; here’s what you need to know (PS; Moriarty)

If you use an antenna to watch TV, some stations will soon disappear.

To keep seeing the stations, you will need to rescan your channels.

The Federal Communications Commission is requiring 987 stations nationwide, including 11 in the Syracuse area (see list below), to change their broadcast frequencies. That’s a little less than half the stations in the country.

The reason? New, faster mobile networks -- including 5G, the fifth generation cellular network technology -- are going to need the upper part of the 600MHz frequency. So, the FCC has ordered televisions stations using those frequencies to switch to the lower part of the band.

Some Syracuse stations will have to make the switch by Aug. 2 of this year, and the rest will be required to make the change by March 13, 2020.

The changes will not affect cable and satellite subscribers. However, it will require those who get local channels over the air -- including the millions of Americans who have cut the cord to save money -- to rescan their televisions.

Basically, you’ll have to retrain your TV to find local channels on their new frequencies.
Channel numbers will not change, only the frequencies on which those channels are carried. To rescan, viewers will need to choose “Channel Scan," Channel Tuning" or “Auto Search” in the “Setup” or “Channel” menu on their TV’s remote control or analog TV converter box.

Syracuse TV should switch to the 400-290nm band so that everyone in Upstate NY can get a tan while watching ACC sports on television!

Maybe we can heat our lunch/supper with it at the same time?
