Welcome to National Tequila Day!

Today we celebrate tequila, a liquor distilled from the Mexican blue agave plant. A sweet sap from the plant's heart called "aquamiel"—meaning "honey water"—is used to make it. Tequila is actually a mezcal, although not all mezcals are tequila. Any spirit made from an agave plant is a mescal, but in order for it to be considered tequila, it has to come from the blue variation of the plant. The Mexican government allows labeling something as tequila if it has at least 51 percent agave-derived sugar—the rest can be cane or corn sugar. Mexican law says that for a spirit to be considered to be tequila, it also must be manufactured in one of five Mexican states: Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, or Tamaulipas.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers delivers some humble pie (itlh; Esden Jr)

One of our writers last year (Paul A. Esden Sr.) challenged Dino Babers to step up. Now Babers is ready to deliver a slice of humble pie.
Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers likes to use analogies when he’s talking to the media. So here’s another one, Babers is ready to deliver a slice of humble pie to one particular columnist who challenged him last season.

This writer if nothing else is straight forward and transparent, with that in mind let us look back at a portion of an article that I wrote one year ago:

“I’m back! So I am not going to ease back into writing articles for inside the Loud House in a quiet way I am here demanding results from the 2018 Orange Squad. It is time for Dino to S— or get off the pot. In this humble writers opinion, it would be hard for him to sit as that seat should be RED HOT!!!!! Before we move forward let’s harken back to days of yesteryear … when men were men and the Syracuse Orange ruled the gridiron. It wasn’t that long ago (2004 to be exact) that we as a fan base and a community were spoiled by our squad.

That is the year that we fired Paul Pasqualoni for having back to back 6-6 seasons which did not meet our vision of success. The past 4 seasons have yielded records of 3-9, 4-8, 4-8, and 4-8. Ironically that is the record that Dino will need to keep his job. It is baffling to me that there is not more discussion of Dino’s job being at risk. I do get the cool slogan ‘Orange Is The New Fast’ and the flashy offense and the video game numbers that have been put up over the past two seasons, but where are the results.”

Analyst: 10 Games Featuring 'Upset Alert' For College Football Season (thsspun.com; Lyons)

Almost every week in college football, there is at least one major upset that shakes up the landscape. While analysts often take the opportunity to predict them ahead of each week, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford is already looking at the year as a whole.

Crawford is putting 10 teams on “upset alert” for games coming up this fall. The list features some of the biggest programs in the country.

The No. 1 spot features one of the most trendy teams entering the season.

Nebraska football is coming off of a 4-8 season, but getting serious hype in 2019. Scott Frost engineered an impressive turnaround in his second year at UCF, and fans think a similar one could happen at Nebraska.

Beating Ohio State would certainly help matters.

Ohio State’s first real road test under first-year coach Ryan Day will be one of the Buckeyes’ toughest games this season. It’s hard to imagine Nebraska’s level of optimism being higher than it was prior to Scott Frost’s first run in Lincoln, but even after a 4-8 season, Huskers fans are incredibly excited about what’s to come this fall with a Heisman candidate at quarterback (Adrian Martinez) and College GameDay potentially making its first appearance at Memorial Stadium since 2007 for this one. If Nebraska starts the season 4-0, you’re not going to see a more frightening environment nationally for an opposing team than what Ohio State will be forced to deal with in Week 5.

Here is the full list of college football “upset alert” games for this coming season.
From 247Sports:

  1. Nebraska over Ohio State
  2. Virginia over Notre Dame
  3. Auburn over Alabama
  4. Baylor over Oklahoma
  5. Utah State over LSU
  6. Wisconsin over Michigan
  7. Colorado State over Arkansas
  8. Fresno State over USC
  9. Houston over Washington State
  10. Syracuse over Clemson
Of this list, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, Michigan, and Clemson could all be in the College Football Playoff conversation. While one loss won’t necessarily derail a team, if one of these upsets happen, it could radically shift the college football landscape.

Syracuse football must avoid ACC landmines to reach finish line (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football must avoid the countless ACC landmines to fulfill its destiny. Here are all the details on who stands in SU’s way.
At the conclusion of ACC Football Kickoff, the conference’s version of media day, the media voted on how they think the divisions will finish up.

The Syracuse football squad received the second most votes (913), only behind the Clemson Tigers (1,209).

This voting process was conducted through 173 credentialed media members.

“The projected second-place finish is Syracuse’s highest preseason prognostication since the Orange joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013,” per the Syracuse press release.
For what it’s worth, two media members were bold enough to predict Syracuse would finish in first place.

But ultimately if Syracuse wants to reach the finish line and live up to the massive expectations, they’ll have to avoid a variety of ACC landmines.

On ‘Drive Time Sports’ Boy Green spoke with PFF’s Lead College Football Analyst Cam Mellor to get the temperature of SU’s competition in the ACC:

On Florida State (753 votes, third most)
“FSU is the dark horse in the ACC. Everyone wants to root for Florida State because in theory it would return balance to college football. Although from an analytics perspective, I don’t think they’ve quite caught up to our PFF rankings. I think the Seminoles have to improve defensively, but they’ll be a better team than they were last season for sure.”
On NC State (666 votes, fourth most)
“Our PFF mantra is the quarterback is the most important position. Losing Ryan Finley is an underrated loss. Say what you will about him at the next level. Maybe he had a boring style of play as a quarterback, maybe that’s why fans/media are downplaying the loss? I’m not as high on the Wolfpack as some others, they have to replace too much.”

Syracuse brought in a crane for Carrier Dome renovations. #OrangeNation named it. - The Juice Online (the juice; Sen)

Orange Nation Twitterverse is a wonderful place. When Syracuse disappoints or overachieves, fans are always active on Twitter.

So when Syracuse brought one of the biggest cranes in the entire country to help with renovations to the Carrier Dome, we felt the need to properly name the crane. And the only proper place to turn was of course the #OrangeNation Twitterverse.

This crane must be named ASAP. We will get it started…

Crane Forth https://t.co/3BlpHpegGv
— SUJuice.com (@TheJuiceOnline) July 22, 2019
We received some excellent suggestions, from coaches, athletes and fans. Now, we reveal our Top three crane names:

No. 3 Conrad McCrane

Cranerad McCrane

— Sean Keeley (@SeanKeeleyIsMe) July 22, 2019
Conrad McCrane
— Brian (@bjerva) July 22, 2019
For you millennials, the late great Conrad McRae played at Syracuse from 1989 to 1993. He was a McDonald’s All-American in high school, and as a senior at Syracuse, he averaged 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds.

McRae was selected in the second round by the Washington Bullets. What a great way to honor the shot blocker from Brooklyn than naming the huge Dome crane after him? Thank you Sean and Brian.

No. 2 The Dome Crain-ger

Dome Craneger

— Dan (@haggswagg1) July 23, 2019

The Dome Ranger is one of the most iconic Syracuse fans. With his cowboy hat and mask, he pumps up the crowd in each game. The fans are just as much a part of the Dome as the athletes. So a shoutout to the Dome Ranger is very appropriate.

No. 1 Kueth Crain-y

Kueth Craney

— Jeff E (@jeff13164) July 22, 2019
This is my favorite for many reasons, but the biggest of them all is because Kueth Duany was an integral part of the 2002-03 National Championship team. Out of the starting five, Duany is often the forgotten one.

UNC Football: Tar Heels snubbed of All-ACC team (keepingitheel.com; Pearson)

The UNC Football program gets snubbed of a player on the All-ACC Preseason team as voted on by the media at the kickoff event
It’s hard not to see the level of excitement surrounding the North Carolina Tar Heels football program going into the 2019 season. Well, if you pay attention to the program at least.

The Tar Heels will enter a new era of football this year with the return of head coach Mack Brown for his second stint. After back-to-back losing seasons under Larry Fedora, the Tar Heels made the decision to fire him and replace him with Brown.

So far fans have bought in as Brown turned in a solid 2019 recruiting class despite being on the job for only a few months and he’s off to a great start for the 2020 class. But in order to sustain that excitement, Brown has to get it done with wins.

As UNC is set to begin that new era in August with a Week 1 showdown against South Carolina, the Atlantic Coast Conference is rolling out their season previews in terms of All-Conference teams and media predictions. On Monday the Tar Heels were picked to finish sixth in the Coastal Division, receiving just one first-place vote.

Now on Tuesday, they have been snubbed of a spot on the All-ACC Preseason team. The conference revealed the team which features 27 players total on offense, defense and special teams.

UNC didn’t receive a single player on the team.

No Louisville football players represented on 2019-20 All-ACC preseason team (courier-journal.com; Robinson)

Not a single Louisville football player made the preseason All-ACC Team, which was released Tuesday.
Clemson, which was predicted to win the conference in Monday's preseason poll, placed 13 players on the 27-member team. The Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawerence was named the preseason Player of the Year, earning 127 votes, despite the return of his teammate and reigning conference Player of the Year Travis Etienne.
Etienne received 24 votes and finished second in the Player of the Pear voting with Boston College running back AJ Dillion finishing in third, Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins in fourth and Florida State running back Cam Akers finishing fifth with one vote.
Louisville, which was predicted to finish last in the Atlantic Division for the second straight year, will face each of the players who earned player of the year votes this season. Perkins is the lone Coastal player who earned a player of the year vote.

5 NC State Players Who Should Be Considered for All-ACC Teams (247sports.com; Smith)

Following two straight years with multiple players named to the All-ACC First Team in the Preseason Poll, the Wolfpack was shutout the the ACC media ahead of the 2019 season. But after having five total on preseason All-ACC Teams over that time, NC State has placed nine on the final First Team while 16 have made the cut as Third Team or better.

Suffice to say, State typically has multiple players who exceed expectations. That will have to be the expectation again this year for the Pack if it wants to compete in the Atlantic Division. Here's a look at five players who have a chance to do just that for the Pack this season, starting with three senior leaders.

James Smith-Williams
After making the transition from linebacker to defensive end -- which consisted of packing on an additional 50 pounds from when he entered the program -- Smith-Williams is set for a huge year. The No. 3 "Freak" in the country by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic went from collecting just one total sack in his first three years with the Wolfpack to six sacks last year.

He also had nine tackles for loss, two passes defended and a forced fumble last season despite a slow start to his first campaign as a starter. Honored with wearing the No. 1 jersey for his final season, Smith-Williams will set the tone for the Wolfpack defense this season and look to lock down a solid NFL draft position next spring.

Larrell Murchison
Honestly, this is just a case of Larrell Murchison not being as well known of a name as players like Marvin Wilson and Nyles Pinckney. In fact, I would put both Murchison and Jason Strowbridge of UNC ahead of Pinckney, but playing for Clemson certainly has its perks -- even for a rising junior who hasn't started to this point.

In his first season as a starter, Murchison was graded out as one of the best defensive tackles in the ACC by Pro Football Focus with an 81 overall grade. After tallying four sacks, two passes defended and one of the most athletic interceptions for a defensive tackle in NC State history, look for Murchison's name to rise up draft boards and earn consideration by the ACC this fall.

Jarius Morehead
Of the senior leaders on this list, Jarius Morehead might have the most to prove. As the leader of an embattled secondary that has plenty of question marks heading into the 2019 season, Morehead has been one of the most consistent players on the Pack's defense for the last two years.

Morehead hauled in a career-high three interceptions, four passes defended and 81 total tackles last season as a junior. With two years of starting experience under his belt, look for Morehead to make a statement this season as one of the top DBs in the conference if he can top his numbers from last year again.

Emeka Emezie
Coming off a year where the Wolfpack placed two wideouts on the All-ACC First Team, Emeka Emezie didn't make the cut behind Clemson's duo and Tamorrion Terry of FSU. Part of that is likely due to Emezie not being the proven starter either of those three are or the fact that he doesn't have an experienced quarterback.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney admits now that the narrative that was out there about the ACC a decade ago was true. The league was down and couldn’t compete with the elite teams in college football the way it currently does.

From 2000 through 2012 the ACC didn’t have a team win a national title or even play in a national championship game.

“Certainly 10 years ago things were different in this league,” Swinney said at the ACC Kickoff event last week. “Ten years ago, I know when I got this job, we had a long way to go, not only at Clemson but as a league.”

During the past six years the ACC has the most national titles in college football with three. The ACC is also the only league to have multiple teams from a conference win a title since 2011, with Florida State winning the championship in 2014 and Clemson doing so in 2016 and 2018.

The only other teams to win national titles over the past eight years are Alabama (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017) and Ohio State (2014).

“I think our league is so understated it’s not even funny. I mean we’ve won more national championships the last six years than any conference in football. You probably wouldn’t know that because nobody’s going to talk about that,” Swinney said. “But where we are today, and the reason we win, is because of our league and how we’re challenged week in and week out. I think that’s what people miss.”

2019 Coaching Match-ups (RX; HM)

2019 Coaching Match-ups
From FBSchedules: The 6 most intriguing college football coaching matchups in 2019
Three of the best are ACC-related...
Mack Brown (North Carolina) vs. Will Muschamp (South Carolina)
Saturday, Aug. 31 at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, N.C.
Who else remembers when former Texas AD DeLoss Dodds got up in front of the press in November of 2008 and announced that then Longhorn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was the “heir apparent” to then head coach Mack Brown?
Speed forward two years to December of 2010 and Muschamp abdicated the throne at Texas and instead took the head job at Florida. He lasted four seasons in Gainesville, ultimately ousted after posting a 28-21 record. Meanwhile, Brown resigned from his job at Texas in 2013. Muschamp resurfaced as the DC at Auburn in 2015 and took the head job at South Carolina in 2016. As for Brown, he served as an ESPN commentator until taking the North Carolina job (for the second time in his career) for the 2019 season.
And that sets up this year’s super interesting matchup between the heir-apparent-that-never-was vs. his former monarch in the season opener. The only other time the two have met as coaches was the 2002/03 Cotton Bowl, Brown as Texas’ head man and Muschamp as the DC at LSU, the Longhorns won that one 35-20.
