Welcome to National Wine and Cheese Day!

National Wine and Cheese Day, created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, celebrates the pairing of wine and cheese, which has been done for hundreds of years. One reason certain wines and cheeses began being paired together is they were from the same locations. Going back generations, some cheeses and wines that have been paired have come from the same village, or even from the same farm. In France, in the Brie region, Brie cheeses have long been paired with local wines like Beaujolais. In Italy, Asiago cheese has long been paired with wines that came from same the region, such as Italian Chianti and Brunello.

Syracuse football K Andre Szmyt, P Sterling Hofrichter on national watch lists (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football kicker Andre Szmyt and punter Sterling Hofrichter were named to national watch lists on Wednesday.

Szmyt, a redshirt sophomore, is one of 30 players on the Lou Groza Award watch list. Szmyt took down the honor last fall, given annually to the nation’s top kicker. After entering preseason camp as a walk-on, the Vernon Hills, Ill., native made 30-of-34 field goals en route to capturing unanimous All-American honors.

Szmyt has a chance to become the second player ever to win multiple Lou Groza Awards. Sebastian Janikowski accomplished the feat at Florida State in 1998 and 1999.

Hofrichter, a redshirt senior, is one of 26 early candidates for the Ray Guy Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top punter. An All-ACC preseason selection, Hofrichter paced a punting unit in 2018 that led the ACC in net average (39.1) for the second year in a row. He dropped 26-of-67 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line and logged 17 punts of 50-plus yards last fall.

Syracuse Football: Ray Guy Award can prove Sterling Hofrichter is the best (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football punter Sterling Hofrichter may be the best punter in the nation. If he wins the Ray Guy Award, he can prove it.

At the ACC Football Kickoff, Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers was emphatic when he spoke about his punter Sterling Hofrichter.

“Our punter is an N--L punter, write it down: he will kick in the National Football League, that’s how good he is.”
Now Hofrichter has an opportunity to put the money where his coaches mouth was. On Wednesday afternoon Sterling’s name was among 25 others that were on the initial Ray Guy award watch list.

This honor is bestowed annually to the best punter in college football. The Ray Guy Award was first doled out back in the year 2000, during the award’s 19-year run, an Orange punter has never taken home the hardware.

As the college football season progresses, it’s going to get increasingly more difficult for Sterling to win this award.

“The number of eligible candidates for the Ray Guy Award will grow throughout the season. A complete list of candidates will be released on Nov. 5, with the 10 semifinalists announced on Nov. 19. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the three finalists to be announced on Nov. 25,” per the Syracuse press release.

Syracuse football debuted its docu-series La Familia on Tuesday, which goes inside the program, the culture and the behind the scenes work for the Orange. The description of the series via Syracuse's YouTube channel is, "Watch the players. Watch the work. Watch the story. Follow along through camp with Syracuse football as they prepare for the 2019 season. Family. La Familia. 'Ohana."

Such a series can be a great recruiting tool, as it can give prospects insight into the program and its culture. CuseNation.com spoke to several Syracuse recruiting targets and commits to get their reaction to the first episode.

EPISODE 1 SYNOPSIS
Before we get to the reaction from recruits, here is a brief summary of episode one. The episode featured a lot of senior running back Moe Neal, why he chose Syracuse, his thoughts on the 2018 season and looking forward to 2019. The episode also showcased the strength and conditioning program. Lastly, the episode wrapped up with looking back at the victory over Florida State that pushed Syracuse to 3-0 on the season last year. Christopher Fredrick and Andre Cisco gave commentary on the team's emotions entering the game, what they saw during the game and feelings afterward.

QB TARGET BRETT NEZAT
Brett Nezat: "Really enjoyed it. Insightful. Looking forward to the next one."

RB COMMIT MARLOWE WAX
Marlowe Wax: "I watched it. I loved it by the way. Waiting for episode two."

Mike McAllister of CuseNation.com joins the show to talk all things Syracuse Football and Basketball recruiting including how the incoming freshman on the basketball team can make an impact his year.

On the evening of Oct. 13, 2017, a single, orange balloon floated down from the Carrier Down rafters en route to the biggest party in college football. Down below, Syracuse players and coaches were celebrating with their fans, clogging the field at a moment when Clemson players couldn’t find the locker room fast enough.

″(Syracuse coach) Dino (Babers) is outstanding, and you can just see it kind of coming,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had said earlier that week. “This is going to be a really tough division opponent for many years as long as he’s there.”

Swinney’s words proved prophetic at an inopportune time for his team. Then-No. 2 Clemson’s 27-24 loss to the underdog Orange appeared to put the Tigers’ College Football Playoff hopes at risk.

For Babers, it was a marquee win and a beacon of hope for the Syracuse fan base.

The rematch in 2018 — Trevor Lawrence’s first start and with Chase Brice finishing at quarterback — wasn’t decided until the final minute, when a two-yard rushing touchdown from running back Travis Etienne sealed Clemson’s 27-23 home victory.

Clemson has been a level above the rest of the ACC in recent seasons. On Oct 6., 2018, in the most emphatic distillation of the Tigers’ dominance, they defeated Wake Forest, 63-3, on the road.

Clemson picked to win fifth straight ACC title; Virginia tops Coastal
Now Syracuse, one season removed from a 10-3 campaign, stands as perhaps the Tigers’ biggest threat to a fifth straight conference title, and the Orange will have the chance to upset Clemson once again at home Sept. 14.

“Dino has done an unbelievable job,” Swinney said. “It’s a great place. It starts with him. I mean, he’s put a good staff together. They have a good philosophy in place.”

Babers was reluctant to talk about Clemson at ACC Media Days last week. Syracuse opens the season at Liberty on Aug. 31 before challenging Maryland on the road the following weekend. Then Clemson comes to town.

“If we’re lucky enough to get through those two games, then we’ll get to our third game,” Babers said. “Every one of those games are a big game to us, regardless of who we’re playing.”

Swinney, who ventured into the Syracuse locker room and congratulated Babers after the 2017 upset, said that it’s apparent Babers runs a “relationship-driven program,” similar to Clemson.

It was a national, almost made-for-TV scene at the ACC Football Kickoff. The Westin in Uptown Charlotte turns into a makeshift broadcast studio for two days every July, complete with sets, staging areas and strict schedule that keeps all events tied to an always-ticking clock. That's not the way it's always been at the ACC Football Kickoff, but when launching a conference network and celebrating national championships is on the agenda, the event demands a sense of urgency that will resonate throughout the league's footprint and across the country.

But before creating that sense of urgency and a demand for ACC content that could translate to television sets and revenue dollars, the league had to get serious about football.

In the 2000s, ACC commissioner John Swofford began to plot the future of the league alongside conference leadership, both what the ACC wanted to look like and where it wanted to fit in the national landscape of college athletics. Clemson and Georgia Tech brought high-level success decades before, but at the time, the ACC's part of the national football discussion was as the resting place for Bobby Bowden's Florida State dynasty.

Swofford describes the state of the ACC at the time as a nine-member league that was "basketball-centric." There was not the consistency of success in football, nor the depth of nationally competitive football programs, for the ACC to be perceived as much else than a basketball league.

Looking into the future, Swofford identified a shift in the business model for college athletics. Television was becoming the primary avenue of revenue for a conference's members. Football, not basketball, was the best vehicle to secure lucrative media rights deals. If the ACC wanted to be competitive financially with the other major conferences, it needed to get better on the gridiron.

"It was going to be necessary for us to improve ourselves football-wise, if for no other reason the business aspects of it for our league," Swofford told CBS Sports. "That's when we started thinking really seriously about evaluating things. We felt like we've got to get larger, we've got to increase our footprint. We need more television sets, and we need to get better in football, collectively. We've got to do it in a way that doesn't damage the best basketball conference in the country. Here's where we need to head to, quite frankly, retain all of our members then as well as give ourselves the opportunity financially to do what we need to do."

Shortly after 8 a.m. on July 16, a sophomore with long, blonde locks strolled into Clemson’s Allen N. Reeves Football Complex, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, ready for breakfast with his teammates. A building employee seated at the edge of the dining facility greeted him with a smile:

“Hey, Trevor!”

Trevor Lawrence in synonymous with college football much in the same way Duke forward Zion Williamson was with college basketball last season. Fresh off a king-making performance in the College Football Playoff, Clemson’s teenaged quarterback enters this season steeped with Heisman Trophy and national championship expectations.

But around Clemson, in the calm before his sophomore season, he’s “Trevor,” a 19-year-old with room to grow. He’s the entrenched starter at the sport’s most celebrated position, yes, but he also is far from a finished product.

One area in which head coach Dabo Swinney wants to see Lawrence grow this season?

The Clemson football team absolutely dominated the 2019 preseason All-ACC team. Could the Tigers beat a combined all-star ACC squad?
The 2019 Clemson football team is one of the most talented squads in the country.

Despite the Tigers losing several key starters off of last year’s defense, they return basically the entire offense and have plenty of promising prospects ready to contribute.

The amount of talent certainly was on display Tuesday afternoon when the preseason All-ACC team was revealed. Clemson football has 13 selections, including eight on offense, out of the 27 overall selections.

A question arose on Twitter following the unveiling of the team and it certainly posed some intrigue. Could Clemson football beat a combined all-star ACC squad? (Assuming the squad was a cohesive unit and they practiced together, etc.)

Defensively, Alton Robinson (DE, Syracuse), Kendall Coleman (DE, Syracuse), Bryce Hall (DB, Virginia), Jonathan Garvin (LB, Miami) and several others would likely lead the way.

In the end, it’d probably be a nice battle. The all-stars could likely post more depth since there are more players to choose from, but the Tigers would still have some advantages when it came to the top-end of the roster.

With All-ACC tight end Tommy Sweeney drafted by the Bills, Frank Leonard’s group will need to replace some high-end production this season. Luckily, this is arguably the deepest and most talented group on the team, full of dudes capable of both pass-catching and blocking. Coach Addazio loves employing 12-personnel groupings (one running back, two tight ends) to play with tempo and make for a more dynamic running game, so plenty of these guys will see solid playing time and together should be quite successful.

Two Eagles were named to the the John Mackey Award Watch List, given each year to the nation’s top tight end. Only 60 tight ends were named, and BC was one of two schools (Washington) with two representatives.

Jake Burt — Graduate Student

Burt was named to the preseason Mackey Award Watch List alongside sophomore Hunter Long. Burt hauled in six receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown in 10 games last season. He hadn’t had much production prior to last season, but clearly caught some eyes and could be in for a bigger season. The St. John’s Prep product played eight games his freshman year and even started one, only to miss all of the 2016 season with a knee injury, forcing him to redshirt. He played in nine games the following season, but surely was still trying to fully recover. Burt is an excellent blocker and will hopefully will continue to see increased work in the passing game.

Danny Dalton — Graduate Student

One-time Boston College commit and now Penn State transfer, Dalton will look to complete his last two years of eligibility on the heights. Dalton was the number one player in Massachusetts coming out of high school and the number 20 tight end in the 2016 class. The 6’4’’, 250 pound Marshfield native didn’t see much action at Penn State, only playing three games and recording three receptions. One of those games was against Rutgers though, and the Scarlet Knights just happen to be on the schedule this season. No coincidence there. He should see plenty of opportunity to make a name for himself.

For almost a quarter century, when Florida State was recognized as one of the elite teams in college football, it was often referred to as “DBU.”

Do a Google search for DBU nowadays and the first reference is to Dallas Baptist University.

When Florida State was in its prime, defensive backs such as Deion Sanders, Terrell Buckley and LeRoy Butler were the scourge of opposing offenses.

Fast forward to 2018, and the Seminoles finished 14th in the ACC in passing defense, yielding an ACC-high 30 touchdowns.
Florida State might have surmised that something was up when Samford passed for 475 yards against the Seminoles in Week 2. When FSU later had a chance to salvage something from its season in Week 8, visiting Clemson passed for 404 yards in a 59-10 rout at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Defensive back university? Not last year.

Harlon Barnett, the Seminoles’ defensive coordinator, also coaches the FSU defensive backs. Prior to joining the staff of head coach Willie Taggart when he took over in 2018, he had coached defensive backs and served as co-defensive coordinator at Michigan State.

Florida State was 80th among 129 Division I-A teams in total defense, 90th in scoring defense and 119th in pass defense.

Whether it's the orange of Clemson or Syracuse, the garnet and gold of Florida State or the signature Carolina blue of the Tar Heels, the ACC is full of recognizable uniforms. But tradition and established branding don't stop any of the members from changing things up now and then either. Just look at Pittsburgh, who will be wearing what was introduced last season as a throwback option as their primary uniform this fall.

But regardless of whether it's a "new" look or an ensemble that has been around for years, which ACC team reigns supreme when it comes to being fashionable? Here's how a group of Athlon editors ranked the ACC teams' gridiron garb.

2019 Transfer Portal Winners, Losers

From Yahoo Sports: Winners and losers of the college football transfer portal
by Sam Cooper, Jul 23, 2019, 3:03 PM

There are still more moves to come in the next few weeks, but now is as good a time as any to compile the winners and losers from the offseason of the transfer portal...
Here are their winners and losers, along with ACC-related comments...

Winners

Missouri
Oklahoma
Miami

Once he got the head job in his hometown, Manny Diaz hit the transfer portal hard. Not only did he bring in his potential starting quarterback in Ohio State transfer Tate Martell, Diaz scoured the market for help at receiver and at every level of his defense. K.J. Osborn, a graduate transfer receiver from Buffalo who caught 53 passes last fall, has made such a positive impression on the Hurricanes that he represented the program at ACC media days.

While Martell and Osborn are the notable additions on offense (as was Jeff Thomas’ decision to renege on his commitment to Illinois and return to the Canes), Miami snagged Trevon Hill from division rival Virginia Tech while landing a trio of talented defenders from out West: ex-UCLA defensive tackle Chigozie Nnoruka, ex-UCLA pass rusher Jaelan Phillips and ex-USC safety Bubba Bolden. Phillips and Bolden were both heralded recruits in the class of 2017.

YouTube Videos - Still Cranking them out!

Now that the ACC Network is less than a month away, did you think - as I did - that school-produced YouTube videos were a thing of the past? If so, you're as wrong as I was! Here are some NEW videos produced by the ACC Digital Network and/or the schools of the ACC...

First, an ACCDN video about Manny Diaz and "The Miami Dream"...

The Miami Dream

At the 2019 ACC Kickoff, new Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Manny Diaz talked about his family history and how he grew up a Miami native. He then went on to explain how his rising to be the Miami Head Coach and the rise of the Miami Hurricanes mirrors that of the American Dream.

By the way, I just noticed that the ACCDN notice has changed significantly:
The ACC Digital Network (theACCDN) is a joint venture between Stadium, and Raycom Sports, a long-time television producer and partner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The cross-platform digital video network covers the spectrum of one of the nation’s top intercollegiate athletic conferences, featuring original on-demand content throughout the entire year. All ACCDN videos are viewable on theACC.com, the ACC mobile and tablet app, as well as various streaming and connected mobile and TV devices. For more information, visit theACC.com and follow @theACCDN on Twitter, and Instagram.
I don't remember Stadium ever being involved before, but there they are now.

Next we have "This is Georgia Tech" from - you guessed it! - Georgia Tech:

This is Georgia Tech

This is Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech Athletics has unveiled a comprehensive brand refinement - including the definition of Georgia Tech athletics' official colors, a new athletics wordmark and a simplification of the iconic interlocking GT.

NC State gets into the act with highlights from the entire athletic year:

2018-19 NC State Athletics Highlights

The NC State Athletic Department secured a No. 26 national finish in the 2018-19 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.
