Welcome to Spider-Man Day!

Spider-Man, who is likely the most popular Marvel character, and who also is one of the most famous comic book characters of all time, made his debut in the August 1962 edition of Amazing Fantasy. The comic book, put out by Marvel Comics, was dated August 1—the day on which we celebrate Spider-Man Day—although it was actually released on June 5. The comic book had previously been titled Amazing Adult Fantasy, but for issue #15—its final issue—its name was changed.

Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The idea came from Lee, and Ditko played a large part in the creation and drawing of the character. Artist Jack Kirby also had a hand in early drawings of the character. When coming up with the concept of Spider-Man, Lee wanted to make sure his character would be relatable to teenagers. He was influenced by the pulp magazine crime fighter, Spider, and may have also been inspired when he saw a spider crawl up a wall.

Is ACC Network on Spectrum? 3 weeks to find out (PS; Carlson)

The ACC Network is set to launch later this month – in three weeks to be exact – and subscribers to many television providers, including Spectrum, still don’t know if they will receive the channel when it debuts.

The league and the cable network, operated by Charter Communications, still have not reached a carriage agreement, leaving the biggest chunk of television watchers in Central New York in the dark about whether they will have the channel when it launches on Aug. 22.

Neither side is offering much insight, outside of vague public statements.
“We are currently in negotiations to carry the ACC Network and are trying to keep programming costs down for our customers,” said Andrew Russell, Charter’s director of communications in the Northeast. “We hope to reach an agreement soon.”

At ACC football media day last month, ACC commissioner John Swofford noted that the league had planned for a three-year build to maximize distribution because of the timing of Disney’s current contracts.

With 6,800 season tickets sold, close to 4,500 more than 2018’s total, the Orange are looking to put on a show for fans and exceed their projected second-place Atlantic Division finish.
Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel ranked all 130 FBS teams in the country entering the 2019 season. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 130 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 25: Syracuse
Coach: Dino Babers (18-19 entering fourth season, 55-35 overall)
2018 record: 10-3 overall, 6-2 in ACC; second in Atlantic Division
Look back: The Orange cruised to victories during their first four games, putting up 62 points against nonconference Wagner and 30 against Florida State. Clemson put together a last-minute drive to hand Syracuse its first loss of the season, and the Orange stumbled the following week against Pitt. Syracuse recovered and won six of its last seven games to close out the season, including a 34-18 victory against West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

Offensive starters returning: 6
Offensive starters lost: 5
Defensive starters returning: 8
Defensive starters lost: 3
Key losses: QB Eric Dungey, WR Jamal Custis, LT Cody Conway, LG Aaron Roberts, RT Koda Martin, DT Chris Slayton, LB Ryan Guthrie, LB Kielan Whitner
Top returnees: RB Moe Neal, WR Sean Riley, WR Nykeim Johnson, WR Taj Harris, C Airon Servais, RG Evan Adams, DE Alton Robinson, NT McKinley Williams, DE Kendall Coleman, DB Antwan Cordy, CB Christopher Fredrick, SS Evan Foster, FS Andre Cisco, CB Scoop Bradshaw
Strengths: Baber’s defense was ranked No. 23 nationally in efficiency and third in the ACC behind Clemson and Miami. The Orange return the bulk of a defensive line that recorded a program-record 43 sacks. Syracuse also has a lot of depth and experience in the secondary, which, coupled with the defensive line, should bolster the Orange’s pass defense.
Weaknesses: The offensive line has a few question marks. Syracuse lost three starters and two reserves from last season. On top of that, several returning players will be playing in new positions, including Airon Servais, who is switching from center to right tackle.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/31/syracuse-football-deconstructing-orange-alumni-in-todays-nfl/ (itlh; Weisleder)

Ahead of the 2019-2020 NFL Season, ITLH dissects the newcomers, the mainstays, and the proficient as they pertain to Syracuse football alumni in the pros.
Following a mid-July decision by the New York Giants to release Syracuse’s four-year starting quarterback and 2018 Camping World Bowl Champion Eric Dungey, we decided to analyze the newbies/hopefuls, the mainstays, and the seasoned veterans across the NFL who spent their collegiate years in Central New York.
The Newbies/Hopefuls:
Amba Etta-Tawo: Wide Receiver (New York Giants):
A late addition to this list is former Syracuse football wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo. In 2018 Amba just missed out on making the New York Giants 53 man roster and instead was kept on the practice squad. Due to the myriad of injuries and suspensions to the entire Giants receiving core in 2019, Amba beat out three other wide receivers to earn a spot on the roster heading into training camp. We’ll see if the second time is the charm for Amba in 2019.

Chris Slayton: Defensive Tackle (New York Giants):
Following a tenacious three years with the Orange, Syracuse’s lone NFL draftee in 2019 totaled 24 tackles (eight for loss), and more than three sacks while anchoring SU to a 10-3 record and bowl victory over West Virginia in late December. After earning an honorable mention among the best of the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season, the eventual 245th pick in this year’s draft impressed during the combine. Slayton is hoping that New York’s rich history of drafting defensive tackles will usher in early playing opportunities to prove himself in year one.
Dontae Strickland: Running Back (Arizona Cardinals):

The first word that comes to mind when you think of Clemson football probably isn’t “holes,” unless you’re considering the huge gaps the Tigers offensive linemen pave for running back Travis Etienne.
But no team could suffer the losses Clemson did on the defensive line without expecting some dropoff in performance.
In April, the Tigers became first program to have three defensive linemen selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft.

Clelin Ferrell (fourth overall), Christian Wilkins (13th) and Dexter Lawrence (17th) have all begun their professional journeys along with former Clemson defensive end Austin Bryant, who went in the fourth round to the Buffalo Bills.
That quartet of All-Americans played an enormous role in Clemson leading the nation with 13.1 points allowed per game last season. How can one team replace all that?
“That’s the biggest thing on our team,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said at the recent ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It’s a major work in progress, a lot of construction going on in that D-line.

ACC football preview: 5 biggest storylines and questions entering 2019 (fansided.com; Wolkenbrod)

The biggest ACC football questions and storylines entering camp, including whether anyone can slow Trevor Lawrence and reigning champion Clemson.
Clemson stood atop college football and represented the ACC with their blowout win over Alabama in the College Football National Championship Game. They stood atop the sport for the second time in three years and could trek towards that again.
There are other teams in the ACC to watch, though, and a full slate of conference games to play out. Nothing is guaranteed for the Tigers — yet — so there are aspects of the upcoming season to watch from the rest of this Power Five group.

5. Syracuse replaces its star quarterback
Syracuse was only a headline for basketball. After last fall’s play, however, this became a football school for a few months, with quarterback Eric Dungey taking this program to one of its best years ever.
The problem is replicating a 10-3 record in consecutive years, and without Dungey around anymore due to graduation. That pressure will apply to the newest face, Tommy DeVito, throwing passes.
Per 247Sports, DeVito was a four-star recruit in the 2017 class. He only has 87 passes on his resume, but head coach Dino Babers runs an explosive offense, so the junior passer has the chance to break out quickly in Northern New York. If so, the Orange could make noise.
4. Can Mack Brown take another program to prominence?
Les Miles returning to college football was one thing. Mack Brown, who stayed out of the game for six years, took over the program where it all started for him in the Power Five: North Carolina.

Pat Narduzzi first saw the uniform growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, as a coach's son. The team about an hour-and-a-half away had an unmistakable look.

The blue. The gold. The script "Pitt" on the helmet. Now that the Panthers have brought that Crayola combination back for good, the fourth-year coach hopes that design coincides with a program revival. Pitt reached the ACC championship game for the first time in 2018, but also lost its last three games of the season.

"Those colors - again, a uniform is not going to win us any games - but they talk about, 'Look good, play good,' and I love the colors," Narduzzi said at the ACC Kickoff on July 18. "The best thing about the new uniform is the new logo. The new Panther logo. I love that logo. … I think it's going to last for a long time."

MORE: SN's ACC predictions for 2019

The Panther logo is straight-ahead with its eyes forward, but those throwback uniforms still evoke memories of the past, of legends such as Tony Dorsett, Bill Fralic, Dan Marino and Hugh Green. Pitt receiver Maurice Ffrench watches highlights of those teams from time to time. It's still a bar this team sees every day at the facility.

https://www.bangthebook.com/acc-college-football-season-preview-predictions-atlantic-division/ (bangingthebook.com; Willis)

Clemson is two tiers above every other team in the ACC Atlantic. The Tigers are the biggest favorite of any team to win its division in college football this year at -600 or more, and their recent history has seen the program establish itself as one of the two best teams in the country.

Barring an injury to Trevor Lawrence, Clemson should have no trouble winning the ACC Atlantic once again, and a conference loss of any sort would be surprising.

The race to be the next best team in the division is wide open. Florida State traditionally is one of the top two teams in the division, but the Seminoles have collapsed over the last two seasons. They had to hurriedly reschedule a bowl game to keep their bowl streak intact in 2017 only to see it come to an end last year in Willie Taggart’s first season in charge in Tallahassee.
Syracuse and North Carolina State are seen as the next best teams in the conference with win totals of 7.5 this season, and you can’t count Boston College and Wake Forest totally out after both teams made bowls last season. The only team you can really count out is Louisville as Scott Satterfield has a massive rebuilding project on his hands.

ACC Atlantic Win Total Best Bet

Syracuse Under 7.5 (+110, 5Dimes/Bet Online) –
The Orange had an incredible season in 2018, but they are going to come down hard after massively overachieving to get to 10 wins last season. Eric Dungey is no longer there to run the offense, and while Tommy DeVito had his moments as a freshman, he completed just over 50 percent of his passes.
That’s a death knell for an offense that operates at breakneck speed. Every incompletion gives defenders a chance to rest and substitute players, and that’s something Dino Babers and Syracuse don’t want as a team. Although Syracuse is finally recruiting quality players to the school, the talent as a whole isn’t there yet, so they rely on scheme and pace to move the chains.

According to Bill Connelly’s numbers, Syracuse was one of the most fortunate teams in the country last season in terms of turnover luck. The Orange should have been +5 or +6 in terms of turnover margin, but they were +13. Those bounces don’t hold from year to year, so expect some regression.

While Syracuse has a very easy non-conference schedule with probable wins over Liberty and Holy Cross, the ACC slate is full of toss-ups. The Orange are likely to be more than a one-possession favorite only twice this year, so I’ll take the under.

Interestingly enough, there is a great opportunity for a middle here if you bet this total early. 5 Dimes and some Vegas sportsbooks originally set the over/under for the Orange at 5.5, showing they are much more bearish on Syracuse than others.

Pull of ACC led Satterfield to Louisville (nsjonline.com; Friedlander)

Scott Satterfield has two football loves.

The first is Appalachian State, the school at which he was a star quarterback and, for the past six years, a coach who led the Mountaineers to new heights in its transition to FBS status.

The other is the ACC, a conference he grew up watching as a youngster in Durham and whose gravitational pull remains so strong, it lured him away from his alma mater to take the job coaching at Louisville.

“It’s a dream come true to be here, it really is having grown up right there in ACC country with Carolina, Duke, State, Wake, all these teams,” Satterfield said earlier this month at the ACC’s Football Kickoff media event, adding that he felt as though there wasn’t much more left to be accomplished by staying with the Mountaineers.

“I love App, the 23 years I spent there. But the opportunity to coach, to be a head coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference is a tremendous honor for me. These jobs just don’t become available. … If that’s a goal or dream of yours, you have to take advantage of it.”
The thing about dreams is that you eventually wake up from them.

In Satterfield’s case, the dream of getting hired by an ACC program is about to be tempered by the reality of the rebuilding job the 46-year-old coach faces with the Cardinals.

Two high-level prospects from Deerfield Beach (Fla.) HS committed to ACC programs on Tuesday. First up, Geoff Collins and Georgia Tech landed 4-star wide receiver Bryce Gowdy. The 6-foot-2 Gowdy is the program’s best receiver commitsince Calvin Johnson back in 2004.
Gowdy is ranked as the No. 311 overall prospect in the 2020 class by 247 Sports, and the No. 54 wide receiver. Back in May, he took an official visit to Georgia Tech’s campus.

— Russell Johnson (@RivalsJohnson) July 30, 2019

Gowdy also took official visits to West Virginia and Syracuse in June; however, Georgia Tech ended up on top. Tech’s effort was led by Kenny Dixon, the team’s wide receivers coach.
A little later in the evening, another ACC program landed a teammate of Gowdy — when 4-star running back Jaylan Knighton committed to Florida State.
The 20th commit in Florida State’s strong 2020 class, Knighton lands in the top 100 of 247 Sports’ composite rankings. Formerly an Oklahoma commit, Knighton is a top-five all-purpose back. He had offers from plenty of powerhouse programs, including Ohio State, Alabama and Miami. He visited Ohio State last month, too.

https://bigredlouie.com/2019/07/31/louisville-football-big-red-louie-podcast-episode-11/ (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

We’re almost one month away from the kickoff of the Louisville football season. We talk predictions with 247 Sports Barton Simmons and relive the golden days with Senorise Perry.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks in The Ville with the 2019 ACC Kickoff giving us quite a bit to talk about and react to for Scott Satterfield and the new look Louisville football program.

Along with 13 other coaches, including two others new to the ACC, Scott Satterfield took the stage at 2019 ACC Kick-Off (aka Media Day) and had a lot to say about his new school, some good and some not so good.

Junior linebacker Dorian Etheridge and senior wide receiver Seth Dawkins were alongside Satterfield and provided a lot of insight into the locker room last season during UofL’s 2-10 finish, and what has changed since.

On episode 11 of the Big Red Louie Podcast, myself (Jacob Lane), Presley Meyer, Ethan Sprowles, and Alex Stengel discussed at length the comments by Scott Satterfield and what they tell us about the 2019 season. Whether it was his comments about the lack of overall talent, what he didn’t know about the program last season, the quarterback competition heading into fall camp, or the general state of the program, it provided us new access to the team and overall sent the message of how it’s going to take time to rebuild.

One comment that stuck was from Satterfield, he said:

“I think the first impression was that when I first saw these guys, they were obviously very hungry. Had a bad taste in their mouth of what happened last year. They want to be good. So they were very welcoming for myself and our staff to coming in. They were like, Coach, we’re ready to work. What do we need to do?
Our first thing we did, put our arm around them, loving them a little bit. (Say) ‘here is the plan, here is what we have to do.’
We have a great core of leaders on our team, great guys that want to be good. They’ve worked extremely hard this off-season. I’m excited about getting them on the field and let’s see what we can do.”
Another major talking point was the ACC Media voting Louisville last in the ACC preseason standings. This came as no surprise but it lead us to into discussion about the potential teams that Louisville could “upset” and how four or five wins may be possible.
On the show, we also were joined by two great guests. Barton Simmons, the Director of Scouting for 247 Sports, joined us to talk about his recent predictions of Louisville’s schedule on “Barton Makes Picks“. He talked about how Louisville could find their stride late after going taking lumps through the early and middle parts of the season, and how Jawon Pass could be taking a similar path to redemption as Felipe Franks did for the University of Florida.

That simulation game with Maryland was very bizarre. It was a defensive battle with Maryland winning 10-6.

But Maryland had a mediocre to bad defense last season and could not stop the run. They could run the ball but were awful passing it.

Devito had a bad game after starting out 10 of 11 passing. They had him running it 13 times and he almost never threw it long. He had at least 2 interceptions. Neal got a lot of carries and did not get much yardage. Maybe 25 carries for 50 yards?

SU punted down 4 with a little over 4 minutes to go on a fourth and 4.

But the weirdest thing of all was that the Maryland QB (VT QB transfer Josh Jackson) continually had a ton of time in the pocket. How could they not at least account for the uber strong Syracuse pass rush? MAryland finished 87th in sacks allowed last season...they are not good protecting the passer. Devito got sacked a lot too, but they isn't a great surprise given Syracuse was 109th in sacks allowed last year, though Maryland was awful pressuring QBs last season (tied for 112th in team sacks).

I bet the score is more than 10-6 after the first quarter.

Devito's gotta play better than that. I say we bench him after that game :)
