Welcome to International Traffic Light Day!

By 1914, there were more automobiles on the road than ever, and they were still sharing the streets with streetcars, horse carriages, merchant carts, and more. There was a need for regulations to make sure traffic moved smoothly and that accidents would decrease. At the time, traffic was controlled by the police. But traffic lights were about to come along and make road navigation easier, safer, and more efficient.

On August 5, 1914, what is considered to be the first electric traffic light was installed in Cleveland, Ohio, at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue. It had four pairs of red and green lights, one for each side of the intersection, and a warning buzzer that indicated when the light was about to change. It had to be operated manually by someone in a nearby booth. It was based on a design by James Hoge. He had previously applied for a patent for a "Municipal Traffic Control System," and his patent—#1,251,666—was approved in 1918. The Cleveland Automobile Club thought that their new traffic light might revolutionize the handling of traffic in crowded cities.

SU News

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/08/05/position-breakdown-special-teams-2019-syracuse-football-preview/ (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re taking a look at special teams, one of the biggest reasons for SU’s turnaround in 2018.

WHO’S OUT

For the first time since 2015, Syracuse will have a new long snapper. The Orange graduated four-year start Matt Keller, who snapped for All-ACC players Riley Dixon, Sterling Hofrichter and Andre Szmyt.

But Keller did miss the last seven games of his career after suffering an injury against Clemson, and was replaced by true freshman Aaron Bolinsky. Bolinsky is now listed as the team’s starting long snapper heading into preseason.

PROJECTED DEPTH CHART

Other than that, Syracuse returns all of its major pieces from last year’s special teams.

Redshirt senior punter Hofrichter is coming off a season where he was named All-ACC First Team and was once again a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter. He led the punting unit which led the ACC in net punting average (29.1), finishing the season with 67 punts for 2,874 yards.

Hofrichter will also handle kickoff duties, with Szmyt as his backup.

Redshirt junior Nolan Cooney will backup Hofrichter at punter. Though Cooney has not punted at the college level, he appeared in every game in 2018 as the team’s holder for PATs and field goals. Reserve quarterback Rex Culpepper was listed as the team’s backup holder on the preseason depth chart.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/08/04/syracuse-football-2019-schedule-breakdown-1st-quarter-analysis/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

The 2019 Syracuse football season is nearly upon us. Here’s an inside look at the 1st quarter of the 2019 Orange schedule from our Paul A. Esden Sr.
Finally, Syracuse football is back on the map! Dino Babers and the Orange is the New Fast lived up to the hype and delivered an eye-popping 10-3 record. Now is the time for SU to build on that achievement and show the ACC that we are not a flash in the pan but a challenger for the ACC title.

Success brings revised expectations and the long-suffering Orange fans will be anticipating another phenomenal season. We are less than a month away from kickoff so let’s begin our analysis of the upcoming season.

First up on the slate is the Liberty Flames.
Now before you chalk this one up in the win column let me fill you in on a few key pieces of information. Liberty moved from the FCS to the big leagues last year but they bring with them a legacy of success. They are just one of nine teams to post a winning season in their first year in FBS additionally they have not had a losing season since 2005.

A few nuggets on the Flames:

  • First-year coach Hugh Freeze (who may have one of the coolest names ever) is no stranger to coaching at the highest level, coaching Ole Miss from 2012-2016. He also is no stranger to controversy as he was summarily dismissed due to NCAA rules violations and questionable decisions which I will breakdown in detail during my individual game breakdown.
  • Liberty will bring to the field a type of up-tempo offense that Syracuse should find eerily familiar to the one they currently employ. This proved to be potent as they averaged over 30 points per game and 423 total yards last season.
This game will have Syracuse looking in the mirror as they face a team similar to their squad of four years ago with a new head coach and flashy offense. A reason for caution to be sure but the Orange will win this season opener and put them on the road to the playoffs.

If anyone knows please let me know.

Thanks!

https://www.wsls.com/sports/liberty-football-begins-new-era-under-hugh-freeze (wsls.com; Leonard)

A new era has officially begun in the Hill City for the Liberty Flames football program, as they open camp under new head coach Hugh Freeze.

There are lots of questions heading into this season that were addressed at the team's media day on Sunday. That includes what kind of offense Hugh Freeze is trying to command? How are they going to attack ACC opponent Syracuse in their first game of the season? And who will be under center this year?

"Our offense needs to be one that's high scoring, protects the football, attacks the defense according to what the defense is giving us," said Liberty quarterbacks coach Kent Austin.

"Whether that's on the ground, in the air, a combination of both. If we have to weigh it one side or the other, we want to win football games. Most importantly, put the ball in the end zone and don't turn it over," Austin said.

Syracuse will definitely challenge that operation on opening night.

"Come game week with a team like Syracuse coming here, to play at Liberty, I won't have to worry about the level of passion or excitement or intensity, I just want us to execute. And execute with composure," said head coach Hugh Freeze.

Quarterbacks coach Kent Austin said Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert will definitely be the starting quarterback. But a pending decision for an immediate eligibility waiver for former Auburn quarterback, Malik Willis, definitely adds another threat for the Flames.

It's that time of year again. In a few short weeks, Carter-Finley Stadium will be filled, and the Wolfpack will be taking the field against ECU. However, we still have a little ways to go until we get there, so in the meantime, let’s do what fans and the media do best: speculate!

This NC State team really is an interesting bunch. It has a very consistent set of expectations from the college football world, but at the same time, it also has the potential to really perform above and beyond the seven or eight games it is projected to win this year. What head coach Dave Doeren and his staff are looking to do this year is to develop the young talent on the roster (there’s a lot) and start making strides to begin to take the next step as a program.

State of the ACC

Clearly, there is a power vacuum in the ACC right now. Up until recently, the ACC typically started the season with at least a couple of teams that could win the conference championship. Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson have been the top teams competing for the conference crown since 2004, with even a couple of outliers like Wake Forest and Georgia Tech winning a couple of titles as well.

In 2015, that all changed when Clemson began their current run of ACC championships. After Clemson took the next step for their program and began to compete with Alabama for National Championships, it left the rest of the ACC in disarray. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and even Florida State all had their programs regress to the point where they fell behind NC State and Syracuse, which is the point the ACC is at today. Currently, the Orange and the Wolfpack are attempting to catch up to Clemson, with both schools taking steps to reach Clemson's elite level. Whether or not it can be achieved is still up in the air, but in the near future, Syracuse and NC State are the only ones who could possibly steal the ACC away from Clemson.

Doeren’s Struggles

Doeren has done a phenomenal job at NC State. Although some Wolfpack fans won’t admit it, NC State’s identity as a basketball school is slowly starting to gravitate toward football, and Doeren is a big reason for that. Doeren took what was a program in complete disarray after the conclusion of Tom O’Brien’s tenure as head coach and slowly but surely began to right the ship. Teams under Jacoby Brissett and then recently Ryan Finley continued to improve under Doeren, eventually to the point where Wolfpack fans can enjoy a quality product on the field and a program typically ranked in the top 25.

https://ramblinwreck.com/collins-adds-ostrowsky-as-senior-offensive-advisor/ (ramblinwreck.com)

Georgia Tech has officially announced the addition of senior offensive advisor Chris Ostrowsky to head coach Geoff Collins’ football staff.

A veteran coach with a long history of success on the offensive side of the ball, Ostrowsky comes to The Flats after two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Central Michigan (2017-18). Under Ostrowsky’s tutelage, CMU quarterback Shane Morris threw for 27 touchdowns and 3,237 yards in 2017, good for second and seventh in school history, respectively. Morris ranked second in the Mid-American Conference and in the top 25 nationally in both categories. Ostrowsky also coached five all-MAC honorees in ’17, including running back Jonathan Ward (1,052 rushing yards), wide receiver Mark Chapman (No. 1 overall pick in 2018 CFL Draft) and wideout Tyler Conklin (fifth-round pick in 2018 NFL Draft).

Prior to his two years at CMU, Ostrowsky served as head coach at Northern Michigan for five seasons (2012-16), where his high-octane offense averaged 31.7 points per game over his final two campaigns with the Wildcats. NMU established 28 school records in its five seasons under Ostrowsky, including several by quarterback Shaye Brown, who became the program’s all-time leader with 9,267 career passing yards, 3,123 single-season passing yards and 75 touchdown passes.

Ostrowsky’s collegiate coaching career also includes two seasons as offensive coordinator at Northern Michigan (2010-11), three seasons as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern (2007-09), two seasons as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Widener University (2005-06) and three seasons as offensive coordinator at Washington and Lee (2002-04).

https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2019/08/04/pitt-football-acc-virginia-preseason-polls-as-motivation/ (pittsburghnow.com; Berger)

Entering the 2018 season, the Pittsburgh Panthers were predicted to finish 5th in the ACC Coastal division. The Panthers responded by earning a 6-2 conference record, winning the division and making their first ACC Championship appearance since joining the conference seven years ago.

A year after shocking the college football world, the Panthers find themselves in a similar situation picked to finish fourth in the division by the conference’s 173-member media poll. While the team certainly feels that they deserve respect, they are using the early doubters as motivation.

Junior center Jimmy Morrissey finds the projections amusing.

“Motivation, I found it funny,” he said. “I don’t know. I don’t care really what they say.”

While he finds the media’s early mistrust of the Panthers comical, Morrissey does love the bulletin-board material.

“It motivates me extremely,” he said. “I love that kind of stuff. I love when critics talk and people doubt us, people count myself (out). … So, It’s good, I mean, really just focused on the team right now, going into the season. But, it’s always in the back of my mind, anytime I hear critics talk. If they think we are fourth in the Coastal that’s… wait until Aug. 31.”

https://ngscsports.com/2019/08/04/bc-football-preseason-camp/ (ngscsports.com)

The long wait of the football off-season came to an end Friday as the Boston College Eagles returned to the practice field for the first practice of preseason camp. BC will begin training camp going through the NCAA five-day acclimatization period.

During the first two days of the acclimatization period, helmets are the only piece of protective equipment student-athletes wear. During the third and fourth days of the acclimatization period, helmets and shoulder pads are worn. During the final day of the five-day acclimatization period and on days thereafter, student-athletes may practice in full pads.

“No matter how much you train, no matter how many skills you do – there’s still the element when it’s all happening (on the first day of preseason),” said BC head coach Steve Addazio. “Getting used to the speed of the game, the flow of the game. It takes a few days but they’ve got a great attitude, great work ethic. We’ve got some skill, some talent, some speed. We just have to get ourselves into pads, at least shoulder pads, so we can really start to see where we are. I don’t take much away from the first couple days, honestly.”

The first practice of the preseason was split between work inside the state-of-the-art Fish Field house and outside on the plush natural grass at the Chamberlin Practice Field.

Addazio is anxious about how fast BC can mature on both sides of the ball in 2019.

“Well, it’s hard to know that. Sometimes they come together, but it’s hard to know that, right? Sometimes it can come together pretty quickly, sometimes it doesn’t come together as quickly – that’s what training camp is for, to see how fast we can mature. Some of the younger players don’t have a lot of snaps under their belt. That has a lot to do with them, some guys are pretty mature and at a faster pace than others. That doesn’t mean a guy won’t be a good player, it just means some take a little bit longer. It’s hard to know that right now. We’ll have a good feel for that towards the end of camp, where we are relative to where we were.”

The ACC boasts the reigning National Champions in Clemson. Despite having several star defenders drafted to the NFL, the Tigers return a handful of NFL prospects and quite a few that could be first round picks. Among the conference, the running back position runs deepest with one clearly elite prospect and a handful of future NFL contributors.

Quarterback

Bryce Perkins, UVA: Only two players had over 2,600 passing yards and 900 rushing yards in 2018. First overall pick Kyler Murray and… Bryce Perkins. The 6’3”, 215 pound passer had a fantastic redshirt freshman year and is poised for a phenomenal 2019 season. Perkins is a multi-dimensional threat who might play in the shadow of Trevor Lawrence in the ACC, but he is an exciting player to watch.

Second Team: Ryan Willis, Virginia Tech

Running Back

Travis Etienne, Clemson: In what should be a loaded 2019 running back class, Travis Etienne stands out as the potential top player. The 200 pound homerun-hitter has scored 37 touchdowns in two years despite only touching the ball 311 times in that time. For reference, former second overall pick Saquon Barkleyhad 43 rushing touchdowns in three years but it took him 671 carries to get there. Needless to say, anytime Etienne touches the ball, defensive coordinators hold their breath.

AJ Dillon, Boston College: Despite the Golden Eagles telegraphing Dillon’s usage over his career, the 240 pound bruiser has found ways to dominate. Dillonis a powerful runner with solid athleticism for his size. While his projection is still as a two down back, he causes a lot of trouble any time he runs the ball

Second Team: Cam Akers, FSU and Cade Carney, Wake Forest

https://www.cardiachill.com/2019/8/4/20753855/pitt-football-training-camp-pittsburgh-panthers-pat-narduzzi-talks-passing-game-kenny-pickett (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

Well, football season is officially back. The Panthers opened up camp on Friday and head coach Pat Narduzzi had plenty to say.

One of the focal points from his opening press conference was about the offense. The offense, of course, had a decided focus on the run game last year. With two outstanding senior backs in Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall, that was somewhat to be expected. But a problem area for Pitt was that they weren’t real diverse and had great difficulty throwing the ball most of the time.

It’s been a while so you might forget just how much Pitt struggled in the passing game. But quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for only 1,969 yards and 12 touchdowns all season long. What Pickett managed to do was be an effective game manager and limit his mistakes with only six picks while completing just over 58% of his passes. Still, the Panthers were unquestionably one-sided on offense as his yardage and touchdowns ranked only 89th and 86th in the nation, respectively. That was even more frustrating as we occasionally saw the athleticism of some of the team’s receivers in Taysir Mack and Maurice Ffrench — both of whom looked capable of producing more than the modest totals they did if given more of an opportunity.

2019 Season Simulations (SG1)

SG1 Sports has been posting YouTube videos of simulated games and seasons for the upcoming college football season. Let me start by saying that I question some of the conclusions of these simulations. Sure, it's fun to watch Clemson destroy Texas A&M or hang 80 on an ACC foe (who will go unnamed here to avoid spoiling it), and it's fun to watch Florida State hang 70 on another ACC foe (also unnamed, for the same reason). However, I had to scratch my head at some of upsets.

First, if you want to watch the videos for yourself, here are the links

Clemson 2019 Season
NC State 2019 Season
Syracuse 2019 Season

Note that Florida State's season hasn't been simulated yet, although of course their games against the above teams have been.

Now for the spoilers (stop here if you want to watch the videos first!)

In these simulations, they have the Clemson Tigers going 11-1, with their lone loss being in quadruple overtime at Williams-Brice Stadium against the Gamecocks... by 2 points, on a failed PAT. Exciting? Yes. Believable? I'm not so sure.

While we're on the subject of non-conference losses, they also have NC State losing at West Virginia and Syracuse losing at Maryland. Now, I'm not saying these results are unbelievable, but a sweep?

1869: Syracuse’s role in the founding of Major League Baseball (PS; Horn)

This year marks the 150th anniversary of professional baseball.

It was in 1869 when the first openly professional baseball club was founded, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

Cincinnati went 57-0 that season, including two wins against a club from Syracuse, the Central City Base Ball Club.

The following submission about Syracuse's small contribution to pro baseball's first season was written by Brad Horn, who called It a "labor of love."

Horn Is a Professor of Practice at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University. He Is the former vice president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and once had a role with the Texas Rangers.

One-hundred and fifty years ago, the city of Syracuse played a bit part in the founding of Major League Baseball as we know it today.

Long before the scale and grandeur of the $10 billion industry MLB has become, on Aug. 4 and 5, 1869, Syracuse’s own Central City Base Ball Club took on the vaunted Red Stockings at Cincinnati’s Union Grounds, only to become a footnote to the undefeated season of the first professional sports team in history.

Featuring a menagerie of the game’s greatest early stars - including two future members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, in brothers George and Harry Wright – the famed 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings defeated the Central City Club by consecutive scores of 37-9 and 36-16, in day games held on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, en route to a remarkable 57-0 record, with another seven undefeated exhibitions running the team’s mark to 64-0.

The first openly paid team set the standard for professional sports, with MLB recognizing the 1869 season as its founding. Throughout the 2019 season, all 30 major league team jerseys feature a “MLB 150” patch, as part of baseball’s sesquicentennial salute and recognition of the founding of professional baseball.

We have a really bad sound system now and the lighting system is archaic. It takes around 15 minutes for the lights to work once you turn them on.

SU fans are hoping we can do something more along the lines of what you are suggesting in 2020. Look for a major improvement here starting then.
