Welcome to National Failures Day!

National Failures Day can be celebrated by reflecting on your mistakes, learning from them, and setting yourself on a new path to success. The day can be celebrated by reading about other people who failed but later found success. Many times people also have thought they were failures, but in fact they had done something very successful. An example of this are the times people mistakenly invented something that turned out to be very beneficial. Admitting Failure is a site where you can read stories of everyday people who failed at something, but later learned from their mistakes to help them move forward. If you are brave you can also submit your own stories to the site!

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/08/15/ranking-trap-games-for-syracuse-football/ (the juice; Auger)

There was a time when any talk of trap games on Syracuse’s schedule would certainly have revolved around what home game Jim Boeheim’s hoopsters would drop despite having no business losing.

Football trap games? Surely you jest!

That was then, this is now.

Syracuse football stands at the precipice of a revival thanks to the man at the helm. He goes by the name of Babers. Dino Babers (read that in James Bond voice).

And after a 10-3 breakout campaign, Babers and the Orange are no longer the ACC cellar dwellers that other teams plan to get their backups some extra snaps. College GameDay is even being predicted to make its Syracuse debut.
Now, Babers and Syracuse have gone from the hunters to the hunted. And with those expectations, trap games are sure to abound.

At Liberty 8/31:
Syracuse starts off with a road game for the second straight season. Liberty is led by former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze. And what better way to repair his reputation than to knock off the Orange. Syracuse’s talent disparity should be enough to avoid a catastrophic start to the season. Trap Game Rank: 4/10
At Maryland 9/7:

Two weeks, two road games. A visit to College Park brings with it a step up in competition. Though, the tougher opponent that day might be the temptation to look ahead to the following week. You smell that? Smells like a trap game. Trap Game Rank: 8/10
Clemson 9/14:

The Tigers will be a heavy favorite heading into this contest. We all know how Clemson fared the last time they visited the Carrier Dome.
Both teams will be focused, especially Clemson, given how tough Syracuse has played them. Make no mistake; it’s not revenge the Tigers are after. It’s the reckoning. Trap Game Rank: 0.0!!!

Ranking Syracuse Football's out of conference schedule, which game is toughest? (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Some Syracuse fans have long pointed to the 2019 season as the year when the out of conference schedule for Syracuse Football finally "lightened up".

Sure, there's no major power on the slate like we've seen in recent years:

2018- Notre Dame (Yankee Stadium)
2017- at LSU

2016- Notre Dame (Met Life Stadium)
2015- vs. LSU
But just because there isn't a so-called college football blue blood on the schedule, don't be fooled.
There are plenty of obstacles in the way of the Orange outside of the ACC in 2019. We're ranking the out of conference foes one through four:

4. Holy Cross, September 28 in Syracuse

You might have guessed this one as easily as you might be able to guess #1 on the list. The Crusaders are the lone FCS team on the schedule this year. Even at Division-I's lower level Holy Cross finished 5-6 on the season.
They did, in week one, give Central New York FCS power Colgate a run for their money in a 24-17 loss but were shellacked at Boston College 62-14 a couple weeks later. The Orange beat BC 42-21 if you like the transitive property. Still, the Crusaders land three players on the Patriot League preseason All-First team after a nice four game win streak to end the season. Two of them are on the offensive line and the other is running back Domenic Cozier. Syracuse should have no problems and never has against FCS teams during the Dino Babers era. Holy Cross opens the season at Navy the first weekend of the season and that should give us a glimpse of how they stack up with FBS opponents.

https://romesentinel.com/stories/babers-out-to-prove-last-year-was-no-fluke-for-syracuse-football-program,80999 (romesentinel.com; AP)

Coach Dino Babers begins his fourth season at Syracuse with a big goal — to prove that last season was no fluke.
Syracuse finished 10-3 in 2018 and was No. 15 in the AP’s final poll. It was only the Orange’s fourth season above .500 since 2001 and came after three consecutive 4-8 finishes.

“We have high expectations, but we’ve got to go out there and prove ourselves,” Babers said.

The key to that sudden success was a high-powered offense keyed by dual-threat quarterback Eric Dungey, an opportunistic defense that produced 31 turnovers, and a near-flawless kicking game. A big piece of that is missing — Dungey ran for 754 yards and 15 TDs and passed for 2,868 and 18 more scores, averaging 278.6 yards of total offense per game in his final year.
Redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito is ready to step in. He’s accumulated more experience than most backups, having taken first-string snaps two straight springs and last summer in place of Dungey, who was nursing injuries.
“It’s just fun knowing that everyone’s kind of looking at you to be the guy,” said the strong-armed DeVito, who is working on adding touch to his throws.

At 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, DeVito had his moments last fall, rescuing the Orange in wins over North Carolina and Florida State. He finished the season 44 of 87 for 525 yards and four TDs with three picks passing, but he’s certainly not a dual threat (minus-17 yards on 23 carries) and he struggled mightily against Notre Dame in place of an injured Dungey, getting sacked six times and throwing two interceptions.

It’s all part of the process. “I think he knows the offense,” Babers said. “Last year there were a couple of opportunities where he had an opportunity to be the starting quarterback.”

Syracuse will look to take another step forward in 2019 following their first 10-win season since 2001. The Orange return a fearsome duo of defensive ends in Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, and some say Cuse has a better defensive line than even Clemson. Just as scary for opposing quarterbacks is safety Andre Cisco who is coming off an ALL-ACC season as a freshman where he had 7 interceptions. On offense, Tommy DeVito takes over at quarterback from Eric Dungey. While not the running threat Dungey was, DeVito is a superior passer who will have a deep group of wide receiver talent to throw to. Head Coach Dino Babers, Tommy DeVito, and Kendall Coleman talked with us about what we can look forward to seeing from Syracuse this season, and whether they believe they can unseat Clemson from their throne atop the ACC Atlantic.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/outrageous-college-football-predictions-acc-2019 (athlonsports.com; Scott)

The polls are rolling out and the odds are being set. The 2019 college football season is upon us.

All of the most prolific talking heads have had their say. When it comes to the ACC, it sounds like everyone is in agreement that it's a one-team race without a whole lot of excitement.

That, however, will not be the case.

The ACC is going to be one of the more top-heavy conferences in the country in 2019. Additionally, there will be some serious competition in one of the divisions -- and not the one you'd expect.

With that in mind, let's make some OUTRAGEOUS* college football predictions for the ACC in 2019.

Outrageous College Football Predictions for the ACC in 2019

Florida State loses 10 games
Things are a mess in Tallahassee and they're only going to get worse. While most of the rest of the ACC improves, the Seminoles are stagnant. A new quarterback playing behind a suspect offensive line is not going to help matters for head coach Willie Taggert. Don't be shocked if Florida State's only wins come against ULM from the Sun Belt and FCS opponent Alabama State. The Noles' conference schedule is brutal, and they simply don't have the horses to navigate it successfully in 2019.

Pat Narduzzi is out of a job by season's end
Pitt somehow found itself playing Clemson in the ACC Championship Game at the end of last season after winning a division that nobody seemed to want to take control of. Still, the Panthers weren't a great team and haven't been since Narduzzi arrived in the Steel City. In 2019, there's a real good chance the Panthers will be underdogs in more than half of their games. If Pitt fails to eclipse the .500 mark for a third consecutive season, Narduzzi will be handed his walking papers. There are just too many good up-and-coming coaches for a Power 5 program to tolerate mediocrity for that long in today's game.

Syracuse upsets Clemson
People don't understand how hard it is to go undefeated in college football. In the last 10 seasons, only eight teams have done it. One of those eight teams just so happened to be the 2018 Clemson Tigers. Clemson nearly lost to Syracuse last season and did lose to the Orange in 2017. Now the Tigers return to the Carrier Dome to face a Dino Babers-coached squad that is looking to make a statement on a national stage. The Loud House will be rocking when the champs come to town. Look for the Orange to pull off the stunner in a shootout.

Three teams in the Atlantic finish with 10 or more regular-season wins
Look, Clemson is going to win the division and then the conference title, but the Tigers won't cruise to either. As I mentioned, Syracuse is going to take them down. Look for Syracuse's offense to be the catalyst for a 10-2 record, with losses to NC State and Boston College. Then watch the Wolfpack's defense carry them to an 11-1 record, with a loss to Clemson being the lone blemish on their record. It's going to be a wild ride in the Atlantic.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2020-nfl-draft-prospects-from-the-acc-clemson-players-lead-the-way-starting-with-tee-higgins-and-travis-etienne/ (cbssports.com; Trapasso)

Want to impress your friends?

Start the college football season fully aware of the top prospects across the country. It'll also give you a jump on the 2020 NFL Draft, which is only eight months away. And, heck, once the NFL's regular season ends right before the new year, draft season will shift into full gear.

In this preview, you'll get the marquee prospects from the ACC, home of the reigning champion Clemson Tigers.
(Note: Because I just wrote about Clemson's top prospects, I'll keep their write-ups short and sweet.)

Clemson
Tee Higgins, WR
Higgins is 6-foot-4, 205-pound high flyer with scary downfield speed and natural ball skills. He's averaged nearly 17 yards per grab in his first two collegiate seasons and scored 12 touchdowns in 2018. He has first-round pick written all over him.
Isaiah Simmons, LB
Simmons, who came in at No. 4 on Bruce Feldman's "Freaks" list this summer, is a 6-4, 225-pound linebacker/safety hybrid with All-Pro potential. He logged 88 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six pass breakups a season ago. His elite athleticism puts him near the ball ... frequently.

Travis Etienne, RB
Etienne won the ACC Player of the Year award last year with over 1,600 yards and 24 scores on the ground on just 204 carries. Though he runs slightly high, Etienne has nasty one-cut skills and electric downfield speed. He's the definition of a power hitter at the running back spot and is a headliner in what should be a crowded class at his position.
A.J. Terrell, CB
Somewhat overshadowed by eventual second-round pick Trayvon Mullen, Terrell had an underrated 2018 with three pass breakups, three picks, and not many passes thrown in his direction. He has the fluidity and click-and-close ability to be a first-round corner in 2020.
Florida State
Marvin Wilson, DL
Listed at 6-5 and 311 pounds, Wilson looked stockier on the field in 2018 and appeared to be the classic nose tackle type with three-technique quickness for the Seminoles. The former No. 6 overall recruit and top defensive tackle in the country per 247 Sports registered 41 tackles with four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks as a sophomore last season.
His first step pops on film, as do his active, constantly churning hands. But if Wilson wasn't able to gain an advantage with his burst off the snap, he had trouble penetrating the backfield because of a lack of power in his pass-rushing moves, and at his height, it's difficult for him to get under interior linemen to bull rush them into the quarterback. On occasion, he flashed a nasty swim move. Wilson needs to lean on that more often.

His sheer size, athleticism, and advancing pass-rushing/block-shedding maneuvers will have him the early-round radar all season.
Cam Akers, RB
Akers, the No. 3 overall recruit at top RB in the 2017 high school classaccording to 247 Sports, had a down sophomore year on paper that was barely his fault. Florida State had arguably the worst offensive line in the Power 5, rarely providing clear running lanes for Akers or any other Seminole back. However the ultra-talented, twitched-up ball carrier still managed 4.4 yards per rush on his 161 carries.
As a true freshman in 2017, Akers ran for 1,025 yards on 194 attempts (5.3 yards per) with seven scores on the ground. Already at 5-11 and 212 pounds, the Florida State feature back has a rock-solid frame and possesses scary lateral cutting skills. Plus, his contact balance is well above average.
In what looks like a loaded running back group, Akers will have to piece together a strong junior year go on Day 2. I think he has it in him to do just that.

Levonta Taylor, DB
Another highly touted recruit -- the top cornerback and No. 7 overall recruit in the 2016 class -- Taylor had a lockdown 2017 in which teams didn't target him often at all, but he still managed three pass breakups and two interceptions. He regressed in 2018 and was limited to just seven games due to injury.
The 5-10 cornerback is now up to 191 pounds, a nice benchmark for sub 6-0 players at his position. And look for him to man multiple roles in the Seminoles this year -- not just the corner spot. Think Tyrann Mathieu at LSU. With more opportunities to play with his eyes on the quarterback, the dynamic mover will be put in plenty of situations to get his hands on the football. He'll need to make more game-changing plays to revitalize his draft stock.
Hamsah Nasirildeen, LB
Nasirildeen is off the national radar right now, but he led the team with 91 tackles at 6-4 and 215 pounds last year. The former No. 14 overall safety recruit in the country with offers from Alabama, Clemson, and South Carolina flows effortlessly around the field in a Derwin James-type safety/linebacker role.
While he has spindly legs and could stand to add more weight to his frame for increased power, as a sophomore in 2018, Nasirildeen showcased the ability to sift through traffic to get to the ball carrier on outside runs and serious range to close receivers down the field.

He needs a big boost in production in coverage -- one pick, two pass breakups last season -- but looks like a freakish specimen with his arrow pointing up, and he's playing a position that's becoming increasingly valuable in the NFL.
Tamorrion Terry, WR
Terry was Florida State's most reliable receiver in 2018, and he just so happened to be the most explosive. The blazing, 6-4 redshirt freshman registered 744 yards through the air (22.9 percent of the the team receiving yards) on 35 catches -- 17.3 yards per -- and a team-high eight receiving touchdowns.
His releases off the line are a major work in progress. Terry has to get quicker with his press-beating moves and must play with significantly more physicality to work through the five-yard area in which contact is allowed.
But, at 6-4 with immense long speed and the ability to turn, track, and high-point the football, he's a fun, niche prospect.
...
...
Syracuse
Alton Robinson, EDGE
As a junior in 2018, Robinson burst onto the scene with 17 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and three forced fumbles as Syracuse's base left defensive end.
At 6-4 and 260 pounds, Robinson has ideal edge rusher size for the next level and is a smooth, speed-to-power rusher with an above-average arsenal of pass-rushing moves on which to rely. For as quick as his first step is, he's not overly bendy around the corner. He's more advanced as a pass-rusher right now than he is against the run, and I'm fine with that.
You don't see a rep with clunky movements from Robinson, and he can win to the inside, outside, or straight through the right tackle with his bull rush. In what looks like a somewhat thin edge-rusher class, Robinson has the talent and refined game to emerge as one of the best of the bunch after Ohio State's Chase Young.

https://sharpside.com/2019-college-football-betting-preview-acc/ (sharpside.com; Case)

Hello again, SharpSiders, and welcome back to another college football betting preview. This time, we’re going to look at the betting outlook for the ACC.

We’re just a few weeks away from the college football season, which means we’re just a few weeks away from the best time of the year. At least, if you ask me. As the season approaches, you can stay tuned to SharpSide.com for a college football betting preview series. It will contain a preview of each of the Power Five conferences, a general preview of the Group of Five conferences, plus independents. As these are betting-based previews, I won’t be wasting my time on teams that don’t deserve it. I’ll also have a playoff and major bowl prediction article. So, without anymore rambling, let’s dive into the ACC!

I’ll be blunt about this: outside of Clemson, the ACC kind of sucks. There are a few teams that we kind of know what we’re getting every year, there are a couple teams that seem poised to show vast improvements and entrench themselves as quasi-powerhouse teams, and then there are a few teams that have the potential to be incredible but could also be colossal failures.

Below are the current prices of each team to win the conference. These lines come from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook and are pretty stale. There’s not a ton of value here, but a couple still catch my eye at the current prices. Of course, it’s going to take something drastically bad for Clemson not to win the ACC, as the Tigers are head and shoulders above the rest and will be double-digit favorites in every game this season. But sports are crazy and anything can happen.
Odds To Win the ACC
Clemson -400
Miami +1400
Florida St. +1600
Syracuse +2000
Virginia +2000

https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/clemson/clemson-s-dabo-swinney-enamored-with-freshman-wide-receiver-joseph/article_e8d428ac-bdfb-11e9-94f1-1fadb8c1c89f.html (postandcourier.com; Needelman)

As gnats roamed the air, Dabo Swinney stood on the patchy Jervey Meadows practice field grass Monday evening, sipping water from a white paper cup.

Every fall camp, the Clemson football coach brings his team to the lumpy field adjacent to the $55 million Allen N. Reeves Football Complex for a handful of practices. It’s one thing to perform well at Reeves; it’s another to perform well at Jervey Meadows.

“Kind of old school,” Swinney said. “That’s what we always say: Live modern, train old.”

One player who has impressed Swinney during fall camp — time at Jervey Meadows included — is freshman wide receiver Joseph Ngata.

“He’s as hard a worker as I’ve ever been around, seniors included,” Swinney said. “He’s one of the most focused, one of the most committed young people I have ever seen. It’s amazing to watch him work.”

Ngata is hopeful the high praise will translate to playing time, though it won’t be easy. The Tigers wield a dangerous stable of wide receivers, starting with junior Tee Higgins and sophomore Justyn Ross. And with junior Amari Rodgers still recovering from a torn ACL, it appears senior Diondre Overton has a lock on the third starting wide receiver spot.

Game by game predictions for 2019 Duke Football season (balldurham.com; Connelly)

The Duke Football team is set to begin its season at the end of August and it’s time to give game by game predictions for the 2019 season.

There will be a lot of new faces on the football field this season for the Duke Blue Devils.

Most notably the Blue Devils will not have Daniel Jones under center as he opted for the NFL Draft as the end of last season and became the No. 6 overall selection by the New York Giants.

While there are many other skill position players that are no longer in Durham, like T.J. Rahming and Johnathan Lloyd, Duke still retains star running back Deon Jackson, the only Blue Devil to be named to the All-ACC Preseason Team.

Duke also has a lot of question marks on the defensive side of the ball as former star linebackers Joe Giles-Harris and Ben Humphreys are no longer collegiate players and All-American cornerback Mark Gilbert is still recovering from a hip injury he suffered on September 8, 2018 vs. Northwestern.

The Blue Devils are coming off of an 8-5 season, culminating in a win over Temple in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl, but after a 4-0 start and cracking the AP Top-25 Poll, Duke stumbled in ACC play, going 3-5 in conference play.

Fans will see a familiar face at quarterback this season as David Cutcliffe will turn to Quentin Harrisas his signal caller in 2019. Harris filled in for Daniel Jones last year when the junior went down with a collarbone injury.

Harris saw action in 12 games, starting two in place of Jones, and won both of his starts on the road against Baylor and home game versus North Carolina Central.

The Wilton, Connecticut native completed 50.0% of his passes for a total of 437 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception.

Duke’s schedule will do it no favors this season, as on top of the grueling ACC schedule, Duke will play National Championship hopefuls the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The Blue Devils will be in a fight to become bowl eligible this season, but we will see where Duke could stack its wins this season.
...
...
Week 12: vs. Syracuse (November 16, TBA)
The Syracuse Orange were one of the surprise teams of the 2018 season and they will look to keep its momentum going into 2019.
Syrause has been labeled by many as the second best team in the ACC but a berth into the ACC Championship Game is far fetched because it is in the ACC Atlantic Division, the same division as the Clemson Tigers.
Dino Babers has changed the culture of the Syracuse Football team and the team looks like it will turn back to Tommy DeVito under center this season after Eric Dungey led the team to the Camping World Bowl last season and a 10-3 record.
Dungey graduated from Syracuse and is now a member of the New York Giants.
Regardless of who is under center for the Orange, Syracuse will be a well-coached, hard-nosed team that is ready to compete for 60 minutes.
While Babers and David Cutcliffe run a a similar program and have to turn to, somewhat, inexperienced quarterbacks, Syracuse keeps more of their defensive and skill position talent than Duke and that could be a major difference maker in the later part of the season.
Despite Syracuse making the trip to Wallace Wade Stadium, home field advantage might not be enough for the Blue Devils.
PREDICTION: Loss (5-5)

Editor’s Note:
This story is the product of years of off and on research by Osceola subscriber CFLnole. Nick is a retired partner from an international accounting firm and he has spent several years studying the evolving development of conference alignment and the creation of separate conference networks. He has been tracking media reports and news articles since the introduction of the Big Ten Network in 2007, the launch of the SEC Network in 2014, and now the upcoming launch of the new ACC Network. We know that this is a topic of great interest to our subscribers; our intention is to help give you not only a better understanding of the ACC Network, but also the roots and formation of various league-specific channels.

The ACC Network will debut on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. Just a few days later, FSU soccer will play the first live game on the channel and hundreds more games will follow – from FSU’s home football opener against ULM to the first ACC road game with Virginia through basketball season and spring sports.

As we mentioned in previous stories on the Osceola, agreements between Disney and individual carriers are critical. The ACC Network will go live in a few weeks on DirecTV as well as streaming services like Hulu Live, YouTube Live and PlayStationVue (CenturyLink and Frontier must choose to “opt in” and carry the channel). Noticeably missing are deals with Comcast and Charter, which service millions of households in the Southeast and Atlantic coast.

How did we get here? Why are deals tough to make with cable networks? Nick answers these questions and much more through his research in the paragraphs ahead.

Rare Amur leopard cubs go on exhibit at Rosamond Gifford Zoo (PS)

The two baby Amur leopard cubs born at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo made their public debut Wednesday, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon announced.

The cubs were born June 19 to Amur leopards Tria and Rafferty as part of the Species Survival Plan for this critically endangered species. Fewer than 85 Amur leopards remain in the wild in their native habitat in Far East Russia, making them the world’s rarest big cats.

The new cubs, a male and a female, stayed in private quarters with their mother for their first 8 weeks and are now big enough to venture into their exhibit in the zoo’s Social Animals wing, Zoo Director Ted Fox said. When zookeepers opened the doors to the habitat Wednesday, the cubs did not venture out for over an hour, then came out with their mother and played for hours. They will have access to the exhibit daily starting today.

County Executive McMahon said, “I am thrilled to announce that the new Amur leopard cubs born at the zoo will be able to be seen by the community starting today! These precious little cubs represent an extremely endangered species and we are very proud of our zoo’s involvement in the efforts to save them from extinction.”

The zoo’s current indoor Amur leopard habitat is temporary -- it will allow the cubs to explore and learn to climb while the zoo is working to build a larger, more complex outdoor habitat for the family in the former African lion exhibit, Fox said.
