Welcome to National Potato Day!

Potatoes were first cultivated by man in Southern Peru and the Northwest regions of Bolivia sometime between 5000 and 8000 BC. From that point forward it has spread all over the globe to become one of the primary staple crops of many cultures. Potatoes are a favorite part of American cuisine, with millions of different forms of preparation to be found. Potatoes are even used to make bread, rolls, and pancakes, and as such can be found in every meal of the day.

For a time Ireland was so reliant on the potato as a food crop that a potato plague managed to starve the entire country. Make no mistake, there was plenty of food being grown in Ireland at the time, 5 ships full a day were being sailed out of the country, but the people of Ireland were being drained dry by the English who ruled them that potatoes and cabbage were all they had to live on.

Syracuse Football Scrimmage Two Recap (247sports.com; Guarin-Carmargo)

Syracuse football completed its second scrimmage of training camp on Saturday. While media was not permitted to attend, Cuse.com provided a summary of the scrimmage which provided some insight into the events. In addition, head coach Dino Babers spoke to Matt Park via Syracuse Athletics' YouTube page to give his thoughts on the scrimmage. Below is a summary of the scrimmage along with a transcript of Dino's comments.

SCRIMMAGE RECAP
Data via Cuse.com:

  • Syracuse ran 125 plays in 90 minutes.
  • Drives started at various parts of the field. No extra points were kicked after touchdowns.
  • The offense scored eight touchdowns.
  • The defense recorded six sacks, one safety, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
  • Tommy DeVito threw for three touchdowns and ran for one. He threw touchdowns to wide receiver Taj Harris, tight end Luke Benson and tight end Aaron Hackett. He also ran for a 28 yard score.
  • Freshman defensive lineman Steven Linton sacked backup quarterback Clayton Welch for a safety early.
  • Alton Robinson recorded a sack.
  • The offense's first score, a short field goal by Andre Szmyt, was set up by a 65 yard run by running back Jarveon Howard.
  • A pair of true freshmen scored twice. Running back Jawhar Jordan had two rushing scores while tight end Luke Benson caught two 35-yard touchdowns. Benson's scores came off of passes from DeVito and Welch on back to back plays.
  • The two interceptions were recorded by Andre Cisco and Devon Clarke.
  • Tyrell Richards had the fumble recovery in which he also forced the fumble. He stripped freshman quarterback David Summers and scooped the ball up. Cuse.com notes Richards would have scored if the play was not blown dead upon his recovery.
  • Lakiem Williams, Kenneth Ruff and Kingsley Jonathan each recorded a sack. Jason Munoz and Ishmael Goulbourne recorded half a sack each.
BABERS ON THE SCRIMMAGE
"Well I thought that first of all, we came through the thing with no injuries. We had some injuries the first time out, and that’s going to affect us for a couple of games. But to be able to come out of this one completely clear with some hitting but no injuries- there were some sounds going on out there. I’m really pleased with the way they competed, and I think we’re getting ready."

https://247sports.com/college/syracuse/Article/Syracuse-Orange-Football-Tommy-DeVito-New-Jersey-Connection-134548793/ (247sports.com; Gaurin-Carargo)

Syracuse sophomore quarterback Tommy DeVito holds his home state of New Jersey close to his heart. During my first day of working with CuseNation.com in early August, I was coming down the asphalt walkway with quarterbacks coach Kirk Martin, with the quarterbacks walking in front of us. As we made our way down to the field, I began talking to Coach Martin about where was from; New Jersey.

As soon those two words left my mouth, DeVito belts out the words “Jersey Boys,” prompting a couple laughs from the rest of the quarterbacks and Coach Martin.

“You just always got to rep your home state," DeVito said. "That’s where I was born and raised. You could tell, like obviously, I can see she's [a Newhouse reporter] got a New Jersey necklace on, I just noticed that. I think things are just different. Everybody from where they're from will say things are different. But I think just the mindset that I carry really make a difference here.”

DeVito grew up in the small, suburban township of Cedar Grove in Essex County. Like any other state, New Jersey has its fair share of divisive issues. One of the main ones involves the nickname for ham. For people in North Jersey, it’s called “Taylor Ham.” For people in the South, it’s known as “Pork Roll.”
“Okay, I call it 'Taylor ham,'" DeVito said. "I think that’s South Jersey that calls it ‘pork roll’, honestly. No one up North [Jersey] calls it ‘pork roll.’ I don’t know, do you?”
This reporter just calls it “ham.”

One other controversial issue in the Garden State involves the existence of a “Central Jersey” region. Officially, there is no such thing as “Central Jersey.” However, residents of Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon, Union, & Ocean counties have advocated to make the state government recognize “Central Jersey” as an official state region.

CAMP NOTEBOOK: WEEK 2
8/18/2019 12:00:00 PM | Football

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With less than two weeks remaining until the season opener against Liberty, preseason camp is winding down. The Orange concluded their second full week of workouts today with a light session following yesterday's 125-play scrimmage.

Speaking of the scrimmage, yesterday's outing was more balanced than the first, in which the defense had the upper hand. On Saturday, defensive coordinator Brian Ward's crew still made its share of plays, including what would have been a likely scoop-and-score by Tyrell Richards had the whistle not been blown. However, the offense bounced back and was able to move the ball with more efficiency that it did in the first scrimmage. Quarterback Tommy DeVito led the way, accounting for four touchdowns, including three through the air.

https://caneswarning.com/2019/08/18/miami-football-recruiting-too-early-to-judge-2021-dt-decommitment/ (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

It is far too early to judge the de-commitment of three-star defensive tackle Anthony Hundley from the 2021 Miami football recruiting class.
It is far too early in the recruiting cycle for the 2021 class of the Miami football program to judge the impact that the de-commitment of three-star Booker T. Washington defensive tackle Anthony Hundley will have. Hundley is also considering FIU, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU and Syracuse.

Four-star Palmetto DT Savion Collins is the top-ranked commit in Miami’s 2021 recruiting class. Collins announced he was de-committing from Miami following Booker T’s victory over Apopka on Saturday. Hundley’s de-commitment leaves Collins as the lone committed defensive lineman in Miami’s 2021 recruiting class.

The Hurricanes are very young at defensive tackle heading into the 2019 season. Miami will lose senior Pat Bethel and graduate transfer Chigozie Nnoruka following the 2019 season. Junior Jon Ford is eligible for the NFL Draft and could leave with a big season. Behind Bethel, Nnoruka and Ford is a young but talented group of DTs.

Sophomore Nesta Silvera is out until the end of September or beginning of October with a foot injury. The Hurricanes are very high on redshirt freshman Jordan Miller and true freshmen Jason Blissett, Jared Harrison-Hunte and Jalal Holley.
Those will four will form the base of the interior of the Hurricanes defensive line for at least the next two seasons. Hundley de-committed from Miami three months to the day after announcing his commitment on Twitter. The initial commitment is still pinned to Hundley’s Twitter page. He de-committed via Twitter.

— Anthony Hundley (@AnthonyHundley1) August 18, 2019
The Miami 2021 recruiting class remains first nationally even with Hundley’s de-commitment. With the focus on adding DTs in the 2019 recruiting class, the Hurricanes do not have a lot of depth on the interior of the defensive line in the next two years. Four-star DT Willie Moise is the only interior defensive lineman committed for 2020.

Minnesota, Baylor among college football’s dark horse league contenders (denverpost.com; Russo; AP)

College football is a chalky sport.
Parity is usually found in the middle class. The favorites usually win the championships. For some teams, though, simply being in contention late in the season or reaching the conference title game is a huge accomplishment. Just ask fans of Northwestern or Pitt, both of which were surprising division winners last season. Or Washington State fans, whose team went into the regular-season finale with a chance to play for the Pac-12 title. Or fans of Syracuse, understandably fired up about finishing second to Clemson in the ACC Atlantic.
The traditional powers will probably wind up claiming the playoff spots and big trophies this year, too. But a few dark horses will emerge to make those conferences races more interesting.
Maybe these six teams:
ARIZONA STATE

RELATED ARTICLES

The Pac-12 South is currently a bit of a mess. Only Utah is a solid bet to be good. There is opportunity for another team to make a big move. USC is the best bet purely on talent, but the Trojans should never be considered a dark horse in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils have some interesting pieces. The offense is loaded with experience, led by star running back Eno Benjamin, but will be breaking in a new quarterback and looking for a big-play receiver to replace N’Keal Harry. The defense is filled with sophomores — most notably linebacker Merlin Robertson — who played through growing pains last year and could be a lot better in Year 2 under Herm Edwards. The schedule (this will be a recurring theme) provides the benefit of not facing North Division powers Washington and Stanford.

BAYLOR
At Temple, coach Matt Rhule took the Owls from 2-10 in his first season to 6-6 in the second to a 10-win breakthrough in Year 3. At Baylor, Rhule’s team went 1-11 upon arrival and jumped to 7-6 last year. The Big 12 doesn’t provide the same opportunity for upward mobility that the American Athletic Conference does, but the Bears seem to be heading in the right direction. Quarterback Charlie Brewer is a good place to start. There is speed on both sides of the ball. The schedule sets up nicely, with three nonconference cupcakes to build confidence in September and five Big 12 games in Waco, including Oklahoma and Texas on back-to-back weekends in November.
MINNESOTA
At first glance, the Gophers’ sophomore-heavy depth chart looks a year away from making a serious challenge in the Big Ten West. But Year 3 under P.J. Fleck could see an early arrival. The Gophers have one of the Big Ten’s best receivers in Tyler Johnson, three good running backs and a nice balance of senior leadership and talented underclassmen on defense. They also have the most favorable schedule in the West, with five Big Ten home games and only one division crossover against the East’s Big 4. The Gophers get Penn State at home.
NAVY
Since winning the West Division and reaching the championship game in their first season in the American Athletic Conference, the Midshipmen have gotten worse each season. Navy bottomed out last year at 3-10, coach Ken Niumatalolo’s worst record in 12 seasons. Has playing in a conference caught up to Navy? Maybe, but it’s hard to believe the Middies won’t bounce back at least a little bit. The schedule steers them clear of East Division favorites UCF and Cincinnati and in a division with good depth that could be enough to nudge Navy into contention.
TENNESSEE
The Volunteers are nowhere near challenging Georgia or Alabama after finishing last in the SEC East in 2018. Jeremy Pruitt is still reshaping the roster after a lack of development under Butch Jones. But there are enough former blue-chip prospects in Knoxville for the Vols to be competitive against any team in the SEC East not named Georgia. If the offensive line can keep him healthy, former four-star recruit Jarrett Guarantano could emerge as the SEC’s third-best quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa and Jake Fromm.

WAKE FOREST
The race for second to Clemson in the ACC Atlantic is wide open again. Why not Wake? Coach Dave Clawson has two capable quarterbacks (Jamie Newman and Sam Hartman) to lead an offense with experience upfront and numerous potential playmakers. Admittedly, the defense needs significant improvement. The margin between success and failure for Wake is thin, but you don’t have to stretch the imagination to picture the Demon Deacons heading into a midseason home game against Florida State at 5-1 or even 6-0.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2019-08-18/college-football-2019-ncaa-power-five-coaching-jobs (latimes.com; McCollough)

College football players must now spend time in the mysterious transfer portal to find a new destination, but for coaches, switching up locales is as easy as ever in 2019: break one contract, sign a new one. And they won’t have to make an appeal to the NCAA for immediate eligibility either.

It’s never too early to look ahead and try to forecast the potential movements of the coaching carousel. Among power programs, USC, Florida State and Auburn could come open. Then there is the possibility that Oklahoma loses Lincoln Riley to the NFL. (If Kliff Kingsbury can get fired at Texas Tech and be rewarded with an NFL head coaching gig, imagine what luxurious packages those franchises who are searching for the next Sean McVay are going to start throwing at Riley?)
In the next tier, we find a few scenarios that are more of the “thank you for all that you did, but it’s time to freshen things up” variety.

For instance, Texas Christian would never “fire” Gary Patterson, the man who has built that program from the ground up over the last two decades and pushed the Horned Frogs to the verge of the College Football Playoff in 2014. But after going 7-6 in 2016 and 6-7 in 2018, if TCU doesn’t show marked offensive improvement and clear signs of competing with Texas and Oklahoma, there could at least be discussion of an amicable parting of ways.

Similarly, Michigan State would not send Mark Dantonio packing unceremoniously. The Spartans have made the CFP and gone 8-4 against Michigan under his watch. But things are starting to get a bit stale in East Lansing — Dantonio did not bring in a new offensive coordinator despite having a woeful offense, electing instead to shuffle his staff — and it’s at least worth watching if Michigan State doesn’t have a big bounce-back year.

Virginia Tech is probably sticking with Justin Fuente after he won 19 games in his first two seasons, but if the program trajectory continues toward last year’s 6-7 record, his seat will get hot. The Hokies already announced that defensive coordinator Bud Foster, a Blacksburg institution, will retire after this season, so a transition is coming. It’s just a matter of whether Fuente will be leading it.

South Carolina is in no hurry to give up on Will Muschamp, whose Gamecocks are facing one of the toughest schedules in the country. Still, a big win over Alabama, Florida or Clemson, all of which visit Columbia, would go a long way toward proving his program is on the upswing.

Here’s who you don’t want to be in 2019: Illinois’ Lovie Smith and Rutgers’ Chris Ash.

For the top tier jobs, Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Syracuse’s Dino Babers and Virginia’s Bronco Mendenhall will be the first names on most athletic directors’ wish lists. For a premier, top-five job like USC, a name like Penn State’s James Franklin would make sense, too. Of course, it would be foolish to leave Urban Meyer out of any speculation.
Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, Boise State’s Bryan Harsin, N.C. State’s Dave Doeren, Pittsburgh’s Pat Narduzzi, Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson, Memphis’ Mike Norvell and North Texas’ Seth Littrell could be worthy of more high-profile jobs and might be appealing based on the particular fit.

Narduzzi? Is that a misprint?

In a previous post, I broke down Clemson’s regular season schedule month by month and discussed what type of challenge each opponent could present the Tigers. In this article we’ll take a broader look at the ACC, predict where each team will finish, and give some analysis behind the picks.

Atlantic Division
1. Clemson Tigers
Athlon Pre-Season National Rank: #2
Cross-Divisional Opponents: GT, at UNC
2018 Record: 15-0 (8-0)
The Tigers return a ton of key pieces on offense including QB Trevor Lawrence, RB Travis Etienne, WRs Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross, and three offensive linemen. It could be the best offense in Clemson history.
The defense will be interesting as the strength will flip from the front four to the back four. Clemson loses all four starters off a historic defensive line, as well as key backup DT Albert Huggins. Potentially compensating for those losses is the boost the secondary will get. Last year, they were viewed as the weak link on the #1 scoring defense, especially after allowing 510 yards passing to U of SC’s Jake Bentley. In 2019 they return both starting safeties as well as cornerback AJ Terrell who had the pick-six in the National Championship game. Additionally, they add five-star CB recruit Andrew Booth and are moving former 5-star and #1 recruit in the state of South Carolina – Derion Kendrick – from WR to CB. The secondary should be excellent.
Aside from a tough early road trip to Syracuse, the ACC schedule is very favorable. They play the two weakest teams in the Coastal Division.

2. Syracuse Orange
Athlon Pre-Season National Rank: #21
Cross-Divisional Opponents: Pittsburgh, at Duke
2018 Record: 10-3 (6-2)
Their leading passer and rusher departs, as QB Eric Dungey moves on. They’ll have to re-orient the offense around the more traditional pocket passer taking over – Tommy DeVito. Despite the big loss at QB, folks in Syracuse are rightfully excited about what DeVito brings to the table. During their game against FSU, Eric Dungey left with an injury, and Tommy DeVito guided them to a 30-7 win with 24 of those points coming in the second half. A few games later, Syracuse blew a big lead to UNC and Syracurse turned to DeVito to turn the tide. He threw 3 TDs in a double-OT victory.
On defense, Syracuse brings back their entire secondary with includes Safety Andre Cisco who led the nation in interceptions a year ago. Seven defensive starters return overall.
They avoid the top three teams in the Coastal division and replace Notre Dame with Maryland on the schedule. They replace three offensive linemen and their QB, which will be tough, but if they can do it without having a significant drop off from the wild 40.2 ppg they scored on offense a season ago they could win 10 games again.

3. Florida State Seminoles
Athlon Pre-Season National Rank: #33

Clemson Football: Athlon Sports predicts Syracuse upset (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

for@gbo

Athlon Sports released its “Outrageous Predictions” for the 2019 season in the ACC. One of the predictions had Clemson football losing to Syracuse.
Athlon Sports released an article detailing “Outrageous Prediction” for the upcoming season in the ACC and Clemson football, as expected, was a popular topic.

One of the outrageous predictions for the ACC was that Syracuse would knock off Clemson in the Carrier Dome in Week 3. This has been a popular upset pick among analysts looking for bold predictions in the preseason and it’s not a surprise that athlete would go there with an “Outrageous” prediction article.

That being said, the author of the article still has Syracuse going 10-2 and Clemson winning the ACC Atlantic, and the conference for that matter.

Interestingly enough, Athlon predicts that the ACC Atlantic will have three teams with 10-plus wins. The article has Clemson penciled in as the champion with an 11-1 record, it has Syracuse going 10-2 and it has NC State going 11-1 with the Wolfpack’s lone loss coming against Clemson football.

While it’s fun to dream, outrageous predictions should still be realistic.

NC State may have a decent defense, but there’s no way in our estimation that Wolfpack goes 11-1. NC State may very well not finish in the top-four of the ACC Atlantic, much less be a CFB Playoff contender going into the back-half of the season.

As far as the Syracuse upset, it’s easy to see why that’s a popular bold prediction when discussing the ACC.

The Orange will be motivated and they have played Clemson close in each of the last two outings, actually winning the game two years ago up in the Carrier Dome.

That being said, the more analysts predict an upset in this game, the more I’m starting to believe Clemson is going to win handily. Last season, everyone pointed to the NC State game as an ‘upset alert’ game for the Tigers.

Everyone talked about how the Wolfpack played the Tigers close and how they’d do it again. Instead, Clemson football came away with a 41-7 victory and absolutely controlled the game from start-to-finish.

UPDATE: How Many Subscribers

Thanks to feedback from various readers I now have more accurate subscriber data for several TV providers. In particular, while I was pretty close on the total combined subscribers for ATT/Uverse and DirecTV, I was way off with the split -- DirecTV has the lion's share of the TV subscribers.

Here is my updated table of subscribers:

OBSERVATIONS:

1. This new data indicates that the ACC Network is now available to around half of all pay tv subscribers(note: we aren't accounting for the myriad of small providers - such as those which make up the National Cable Television Cooperative - which may add up to a pretty big number).

2. Dish Network is rumored to be in serious negotiations for the ACC Network right now.

...

Last update I saw had the SECN at about 70 million and the B1G at about 65 million. The SECN gets an average of $0.71/subscriber, the B1GN $0.41/subscriber. The Pac 12 network has 15 million subscribers at $0.35/subscriber.

That means the ACCN needs about $.55/subscriber to beat the B1GN in revenue, assuming the ACCN adds no further subscribers (there will be at least 10 million more added by the end of the year).

How much more does ESPN make in affiliate revenue than the other sports networks?

Time to Call Comcast!

The announcement that Charter/Spectrum had reached an agreement to carry the ACC Network was great news for millions of ACC football fans in the conference footprint. However, there are still millions more whose cable provider doesn't yet have a contract with the ACCN - I'm referring to Comcast, which is especially big in Florida.

In the South Beach area UM, Manny Diaz sent a message to all Canes fans: Demand Comcast carries ACC Network — or switch cable providers!
It’s crunch time.

Miami Hurricanes football coach Manny Diaz posted a video Thursday urging South Florida Canes fans to contact Comcast and tell the company it needs to carry the soon-to-be debuted ACC Network — or else, added UM athletics in a written message, “make the switch’’ to another cable company.

Thousands of University of Miami football fans have Comcast/Xfinity or AT&T U-verse cable carriers, which are South Florida’s major cable providers.
Further north Florida State Head Coach Willie Taggart had a similar message about the ACC Network:
Seminole fans contact Xfinity / Comcast and demand they add the ACC Network or make the switch to a company that does. A list of providers carrying the network is available at GetACCN.com.

ACC Network Extra Will No Longer Be Available on Sling TV Unless a New Deal is Reached
ACC Network Extra will no longer be available on Sling TV unless a new agreement is struck by August 22nd to carry ACC Network. The overflow channel, recently renamed ACCNX, which will air 400 additional live events — will only be be available for subscribers of services carrying ACC Network.
While we’ve heard Disney is having productive conversations with Dish to carry the channel for Sling TV — no deal is currently in place. For subscribers of services carrying ACC Network, you can use your TV Everywhere credentials to ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) through the ESPN App.
If you are a subscriber of either Sling (streaming) or Dish (satellite) television, keep the pressure on - and be ready to change providers if they don't get the ACC Network!

Secret Sandwiches of CNY: 12 great spots you didn’t know about (PS; Miller)

You can always find a great sandwich in Central New York. We’ve got Brooklyn Pickle, Darwin and, of course, Wegmans.
But the area offers so much more. Over the past week, I was on a mission to find sandwich shops that you might not know about. I asked readers on our Where Syracuse Eats Facebook page for recommendations and was bombarded with suggestions. Along the way I found some others.

I realize you may know some of these, and I’m sure you might have a favorite not on this list. Let me know about those so I can write a sequel to this story down the road. Email me or leave a comment.
In the meantime, here are 12 places I found to get a killer sandwich that you might not know about. Click on the address link for directions.

Green Hills Farms market
Address: 5933 S. Salina St., Syracuse
Green Hills hugs the southern border of the city just before you get to Nedrow.
The deli department offers a daily lunch specials with plenty of hot entrees, including delicious fried chicken.
But we’re here for the sandwiches. And there’s a reason you’ll often see a line at the sandwich counter. Every sandwich here is huge, made to order and cheap.

How huge? Well, I ordered a full-size combo panini. The full was only $3 more than a half, so I figured this was the economically wise choice.

For $10.49, you get 3 pounds and 3 ounces of food. THREE POUNDS!!!! That includes the sandwich (which comes in two Styrofoam containers), a box of house-made potato chips and a couple dill pickles.

The Combo, which happened to be the panini of the day, is thinly shaved turkey breast and ham, Swiss cheese and honey dijon mustard on Ciabatta bread.

Same here. lol
I am almost always surprised by what aspects of the daily articles people respond to. I would have thought the comparison of subscription numbers and revenue for the ACCN, the SECN and the B1GN would have been the big one people would respond to. You never know.

And yes, those salt potatoes do look like donut holes.

That reporter is not from NJ. There is a vast difference between ham and Taylor Ham. If you don’t know that, you haven’t tried it. If you haven’t tried it, you’re not from NJ. North Jersey Tommy knows what’s up! Good job care taker
