https://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2019/08/why-is-syracuse-football-opening-2019-season-at-liberty.html (PS; Mink)

It’s unusual for a top-25 team from a major conference to open the season on the road in a small stadium against an opponent that only recently moved up to college football’s highest classification.

That’s how it is for Syracuse football in 2019. The No. 22 Orange heads to Liberty for Saturday night’s opener at 25,000-seat Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Va.

So, why is the most anticipated Syracuse football season in two decades starting in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the middle of Virginia?

With kickoff two days away, it’s a good time to address one of the simplest questions about SU’s season opener.

Besides, since the game was scheduled two years ago, in the middle of a stretch of 4-8 seasons, the answer is easy to forget.

And, there’s a few more folks taking stock of what is happening in the Carrier Dome this fall before the start of basketball season. They get a pass.

Syracuse scheduled a 2-for-1 with Liberty

This year’s game against Liberty is the first in a three-game series scheduled to run from 2019-2021.

Financial terms of the agreement between the two private institutions were not disclosed.

Games in 2020 and 2021 are scheduled to be played in the Carrier Dome.

Liberty desired a Power-Five opponent for its home opener

The Flames have no conference affiliation and had been looking to schedule major-conference opponents to patch together an attractive schedule for a program moving up to the FBS level.

It especially sought out a major-conference opponent to kick off the 2019 season, the first year Liberty would eligible to compete in postseason bowl games.

Syracuse stepped forward as an amenable dance partner. It wanted competitive balance in its nonconference schedule to offset a challenging ACC Atlantic Division featuring teams such as Clemson and Florida State.

2019 Syracuse football season preview (dukechronicle.com; Browning)

Following four years straight of winning less than five games, the Syracuse Orange took a big step forward in 2018. After being picked to finish last in the ACC in the preseason media poll, they shocked the college football world, finishing second in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference and achieving their first 10-win season since 2001.

While Syracuse looks like a possible playoff contender for the first time in recent memory, they will have some big personnel changes to contend with. The Orange have to replace two starting linebackers and three offensive linemen, but perhaps the biggest change will be under center. Syracuse lost the playmaking Eric Dungey to graduation, leaving pocket-passing sophomore Tommy DeVito in-line to step in and replace him.

Despite the losses, Syracuse is returning players that are ready to make an immediate impact. Senior edge rushers Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman are ready to build off double digit sack seasons. Furthermore, standout sophomore safety Andre Cisco—who tied for the national lead in interceptions last season with seven—is primed to put the pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Syracuse enters the season ranked No. 22 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll. The Orange's season begins against the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Va., but it’s their third game of the season when they face Clemson that is turning heads, as the contest will likely have tremendous playoff implications. They won’t face Duke until their 10th game, after the team's second bye week. Duke hasn’t played Syracuse since the 2014 season, when the Blue Devils won 27-10.

SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN

Only one team on SU’s schedule enters the season ranked – #1 Clemson. The Orange, however, are probably not afraid of the Tigers, having knocked them off two years ago at home and falling by four points on the road last season, failing to hang onto a ten-point fourth quarter lead. Clemson will come back to the Dome this season and that game will have plenty of hype, as it has already been announced as the ABC national Saturday night game and will be a strong candidate to have ESPN’s College Gameday come to campus if both teams are unblemished.

The Tigers are the only opponent entering the season who will definitely be favored over Syracuse. The rest of the conference slate features the remainder of the Atlantic Division, who were all voted behind the Orange in the conference preseason media poll and there was a pretty decent gap between SU and the third- and fourth-place teams, Florida State and N.C. State. Both of those opponents, however will be hosting the Orange, so there is an extra element of danger in those games.

The two crossover opponents from the Coastal Division are rival Pitt and Duke, who were voted fourth and fifth, respectively, in their division. That, along with a relatively light non-conference schedule should set things up very nicely for a successful season. Maryland as the only Power Five opponent on the slate, but their appearance a

week before Clemson makes that road contest more of a potential trap game. Western Michigan, who should contend for their division in the MAC, is the second-toughest non-conference matchup. Liberty has only recently jumped to FBS status and Holy Cross is an FCS level foe.

The layout of the schedule is fairly beneficial, as well. The Orange get their first bye week after five games. They return to games on a Thursday, a Friday, and a Saturday, meaning they get at least one extra day of rest between those three contests. The second bye comes before the final three games, meaning the team’s two off weeks are about as equally spread out in their schedule as they can be.

SEASON PREDICTION

The Orange come into the 2019 season with something unusual – expectations. After finishing 10-3 last season, the team has quality depth at several positions (defensive end, defensive back, running backs, wide receiver) and they replace arguably the most productive quarterback in school history quarterback with one of the most highly-regarded prospects at the position in school history.

There are some things the Orange did last season that will likely not happen this time around. SU finished fifth nationally in both interceptions and fumble recoveries, forcing 31 turnovers overall, good for third in the country. Achieving at that level again is not something to be expected.

At the same time, there is plenty of talent on the defense. The line, particularly the ends, is experienced and has impact players. The pass-rushing threat provided by Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman on the ends is something opponents must account for.

Orange Empire: The Next Step - A 2019 Syracuse Football Preview (spectrumlocalnews.com; Long)

On December 7, 2015, Dino Babers met with the Syracuse media for the first time. In the press conference that made Babers sound as if he practically came out of a time machine after he stated special things are going to happen on the hill.

As Babers listed those he wouldn’t have progressed through his career without, he brought up his college coach, Dick Tomey. Babers learned five words that have been etched into the mind of his players, staff, and the community.

“Consistently good, not occasionally great.”

Tune into Orange Empire: The Next Step, on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. on Spectrum News. The show will re-air Friday at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at 11:00 a.m., and Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

As the Orange are coming off of their first 10-win season since 2001, showing flashes of brilliance in prior seasons against the likes of Clemson and Virginia Tech, it’s clear that the Orange have been occasionally great.

Now that they find themselves in the pre-season ranked 22nd, the Orange have a chance be consistently good.

Dino Babers led the 2018 team to a ranking as high as 12, and have gone from being the hunters to being the hunted. All eyes are on the Orange to continue their winning ways from the year prior as they were voted to finish second in the ACC Atlantic in 2019. But Babers is not taking any game lightly, including week one against the Liberty Flames, who recently made the jump to the FBS.

Black Shoe Degenerates, Week 1: Let The Real Fun Begin (blackshoediaries.com; misdreavus)

Last week was fun, but this **** right here, this is it! A full weekend, Thursday through Monday, of nothing but college football pumped right into my veins! There are your usual duds *cough* Penn State vs Idaho *cough*, but there are some great matchups as well to start the season, and every monitor in my house will have a game on! Alright, let’s get right to business.

I went 1-1 last week, not giving Hawaii enough credit for how many people they returned, while being spot on with Miami keeping it closer than everyone thought (including Florida players, apparently). Miami might have even won the game if they would have gone for it on 4th down instead of attempting a field goal...

Here’s a quick reminder of the rules:

  1. Everyone starts out with 1000 fake dollars.
  2. You bet based on American rules (a spread bet costs 10% unless otherwise noted).
  3. If you win, you get what you put down plus your winnings. If you lose, you lose.
  4. If you run out of money, you’re out of luck. To keep going, you need to borrow money. However, instead of borrowing from me, you have to borrow from your fellow participants! This means whoever you borrow from can ask to be paid back whenever they want, and they set the terms of your loan! For this exercise, “terms” means “how much interest to charge, up to 15% (one-time fee).” Once you take out a loan, if you have enough money to cover it, you must pay it back as soon as your lender requests payment.
  5. Picks are locked when you place them, even if the line goes up/down afterward.
  6. You can make your picks up until the start of a game, or Saturday at noon, whichever comes first. Tuesday/Wednesday games will not be included.
  7. If you don’t make any picks for a given week, you get docked 100 dollars for the week.
  8. After four consecutive weeks of not making any picks, you balance is set to zero and you are disqualified from competition for the season.
  9. Person with the most money at the end of the season wins.
  10. Minimum bet amount is 10% of your total stash. For example, if your stash is 1000 and I have four games on the board that week, you can make four 25-dollar picks.
Picks

Syracuse -17 @ Liberty - I know Liberty was better than advertised last season, but Syracuse is still the second best team in the ACC until proven otherwise. New quarterback or not, this seems like a small line to me, even on the road. $50.

Syracuse Football: Week 1 Liberty Flames crystal ball predictions (itlh; Esden Jr)

It’s time for the debut of our weekly crystal ball predictions series ahead of Syracuse football vs Liberty Flames. Here are all the details.
This feels like it has been the longest offseason in the history of mankind. But finally the waiting and speculation are over, it’s time for some actual analysis and most importantly some Syracuse football.

In Week 1 the Orange will travel to play the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Virginia. Syracuse will also hit the road in Week 2 when they play the Maryland Terrapins. This will be the first time since the 2010 season that Syracuse has opened up with its first two games on the road.

While the Orange are projected as a heavy favorite in this contest, there’s a lot that we don’t know about this Liberty team. This upcoming matchup on Saturday will be the first time in history these two programs are squaring off.

On top of that, Liberty has a new head coach up top in Hugh Freeze. The name stands out and so does the winning pedigree (42-32 in eight seasons). But there’s no tape of Liberty and Freeze together, so it’s anyone’s guess what Syracuse will encounter at Williams Stadium Saturday night.

With that as our backdrop, here are our official crystal ball predictions for Week 1 between the Syracuse football squad and the Liberty Flames.

This news broke during the GT/Clemson game...

Dish Network, Sling TV agree to carry ACC Network
Network negotiations often come down to the 11th hour. The ACC Network negotiations with Dish Network and Sling TV came after midnight. Clemson’s season opener against Georgia Tech was broadcast exclusively on ACC Network on Thursday night, but Dish and Sling did not agree to carry the network until midway through the second quarter.
This a message Dish sent to at least one customer:
You asked and we listened! We are happy to announce that the ACC Network is available on channel 402 if you subscribe to the America's Top 120 Plus package or higher!
And this is what Dish posted on Twitter:
@espn and DISH have an agreement in principle to distribute the @accnetwork on DISH TV in time for the Georgia Tech vs #1 ranked Clemson. If you're a subscriber with America’s Top 120+ or above, our Regional Action Pack or our Multi-Sport Pack, watch tonight’s game on channel 402
This is what the ACC Network posted on twitter:

GT/Clemson Result 8/30/19 (RX; HM)

GT/Clemson Result 8/30/19

Georgia Tech 14, Clemson 52

The Tigers scored early and often, building a 35-0 lead before the Yellow Jackets could even get on the scoreboard. In all, Clemson's offense scored 7 touchdowns and a field goal, while their defense gave up a total of 2 touchdowns - both in the second half.

Georgia Tech fans had to know this was going to be a tough transition year, but the Jackets have no reason to be ashamed for the way the Tigers beat them - knowing that Clemson laid a similar beat down on Alabama back in January. So I expect GT to improve as the season progresses, but Clemson's just on a whole different level right now.

Next for the Yellow Jackets: USF at home (a revenge game)

Next for the Tigers: Texas A&M at home (a near-loss last year)

https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/acc/article233783557.html (miamiherald.com; Wilson)

The Atlantic Coast Conference once again has a team on the short list of national championship favorites as the Clemson Tigers aim to defend their title. The rest of the conference is wide open, though, with teams like the Syracuse Orange and Miami Hurricanes trying to prove 2018 was a fluke in different ways.

Here’s a division-by-division look at how the ACC could wind up shaking out in 2019:

Atlantic Division

1. CLEMSON TIGERS

00:11 / 00:30

Coach: Dabo Swinney (12th year, 116-30).
Players to watch: QB Trevor Lawrence; RB Travis Etienne; WR Justyn Ross; DE Xavier Thomas; S Isaiah Simmons.
Key games: vs. Texas A&M (Sept. 7); at Syracuse (Sept. 14); vs. Florida State (Oct. 12); at Louisville (Oct. 19); at South Carolina (Nov. 30).

Overview: The defending national champions have a lot to replace, particularly on defense, but Swinney officially has a machine going in Clemson, South Carolina. Lawrence might be the best quarterback in the country. Etienne might be the nation’s best running back. Ross could take the leap into the conversation as the best wide receiver in the country. The Tigers’ offense should be good enough to overcome the losses of All-American defensive linemen Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Clelin Ferrell, particularly in the ACC.

2. SYRACUSE ORANGE

Coach: Dino Babers (sixth year, 36-28).
Players to watch: OL Evan Adams; DL Alton Robinson; DB Andre Cisco; K Andre Szmzyt; K/P Sterling Hofrichter.
Key games: vs. Clemson (Sept. 14); at Florida State (Oct. 26); at Louisville (Nov. 23).

Overview: Syracuse was one of the most pleasant surprises in the country last year as Babers got his offensive machine rolling in Syracuse, New York. Even with quarterback Eric Dungey gone, Babers is a system unto himself and Tommy DeVito, Dungey’s replacement, is one of the top quarterbacks the Orange has recruited since Donovan McNabb. Throw in an experienced defense and the best kicker in the country, and Syracuse might be here to stay in the Atlantic Division.

3. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES

Coach: Willie Taggart (10th year, 52-57).
Players to watch: RB Cam Akers; WR Tamorrion Terry; DT Marvin Wilson; DB Stanford Samuels III; P Logan Tyler.
Key games: vs. Boise State (Aug. 31); at Clemson (Oct. 12); vs. Syracuse (Oct. 26); vs. Miami (Nov. 2); at Florida (Nov. 30)

Overview: Year 1 was a disaster for Taggart, but things can only go up in the coach’s second season. The offensive line will almost certainly be better, the quarterback situation should be more consistent and there’s enough talent in place to bounce back, even if it doesn’t quite push Florida State to the top tier in the division. Worst case, the Seminoles can just lean on Akers.

4. NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK

Coach: Dave Doeren (ninth year, 66-38).
Players to watch: WR Emeka Emezie; S Jarius Morehead. Key games: at Florida State (Sept. 28); vs. Syracuse (Oct. 10); vs. Clemson (Nov. 9); vs. Louisville (Nov. 16).

Overview: North Carolina State was hit hard by key departures after spending much of the 2018 season inside the Top 25. The Wolfpack lost a pair of All-American offensive linemen as Garrett Bradbury and Terrone Prescod graduated. North Carolina State will also have to work in a first-year quarterback after Ryan Finley departed for the NFL. It looks like a rebuilding season in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Clemson football: Who can challenge the Tigers in the ACC? (nypost.coml Sears)

It’s Clemson, a sizable gap, then everyone else.

That goes for the ACC and — with the exception of Alabama — the rest of the country. The No. 1 Tigers have won two of the last three national championships, own one of the top 2019 recruiting classes and return most of their production from an undefeated season.

Head coach Dabo Swinney has built a juggernaut to rival that of Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa. Trevor Lawrence looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the nation and has a receiving corps to help him win the program a second straight national championship. Travis Etienne will anchor the run game after averaging 8.1 yards per carry last season. Even the front seven, the only area on the roster with significant turnover, still has defensive coordinator Brent Venables running the show.

So for the fifth straight year, the ACC is Clemson’s to lose. And, with the rest of the conference in the midst of a rough stretch, the gap between the Tigers and everyone else seems wider than ever before.

Coastal Division

Miami Hurricanes: Head coach Manny Diaz takes over a talented team in need of starting quarterback Jarren WIlliams to step up. The freshman went 19-for-29 for 214 yards and a touchdown in 24-20 season-opening loss to Florida.
Virginia Tech Hokies: Longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster will retire after this season, but for now, fields an up-and-coming squad with an attainable path to eight or nine wins.
Virginia Cavaliers: Last year, the Cavaliers quietly put up their best season (8-5) since 2011, and with a lot of returners including quarterback Bryce Perkins, should build on it.
Pittsburgh Panthers: After winning the division despite a 7-5 record, then getting walloped by Clemson in the ACC title game, it seems the rest of the Coastal has caught up with coach Pat Narduzzi.
North Carolina Tarheels: Mack Brown is a splashy hire — he hasn’t coached since 2013 with Texas and returns to the program he led in the late 1980s and 90s — and after five overall wins in two years, it could take some time for the Tarheels to to reboot and rebuild.
Duke Blue Devils: Losing current Giants quarterback Daniel Jones from a team that went 3-5 in conference play doesn’t bode well.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: The transition from Paul Johnson’s triple-option to Geoff Collins’ more conventional system will probably take a full recruiting cycle to really kick in.

Atlantic Division

No. 22 Syracuse Orange: Ten wins will be a tough act to follow for coach Dino Babers, especially with new starting QB Tommy DeVito, but the defense and schedule give room for optimism.
Florida State Seminoles: After a disastrous five-win season, the Seminoles should improve, though they have a long way to go to challenge Clemson.

ACC football: Things to watch on the opening week (greensboro.com; AP)

Things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 1:

Game of the week

Virginia at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m. Saturday, ACC). So much for tiptoeing into the season: The Coastal Division favorite Cavaliers open against a Pitt team that won it last year before being blown out in the title game by eventual national champ Clemson. The Coastal has had six different winners in six years and Virginia is the only school in the division not to make a championship game. QB Bryce Perkins — an exciting playmaker who would get all-ACC consideration if not for Clemson's Trevor Lawrence — looks to follow up an impressive 2018 season in which he ranked third in the league in total offense (277.2 ypg) against a Pitt defense that must replace three starting linebackers.

Best matchup

Virginia Tech's defense against Boston College's ground game (4 p.m. Saturday, ACC). The Hokies would love nothing more than to start longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster's final season by slowing down the ACC's top rusher from last season. AJ Dillon averaged a league-best 110.8 yards in 2018 despite a nagging midseason ankle injury. Virginia Tech's notoriously tough defense under Foster took a step back last season, ranking 11th both overall (438.6 ypg) and against the run (210.3).

Inside the numbers

It turns out Florida State won't get a chance to extend its long winning streak in Jacksonville (noon Saturday, ESPNews). The Seminoles' game against Boise State was moved to their home stadium in Tallahassee because of the threat of Hurricane Dorian. The game originally was set for a neutral site that isn't all that neutral for FSU — which has won nine straight in Jacksonville, a run that dates back 30 years. Florida State is 14-2-1 in Jacksonville, and for now, the only chance the Seminoles have to improve on that record is to earn a Gator Bowl invitation.

Long shot

N.C. State opens with the same opponent against whom it closed the 2018 regular season — East Carolina (noon Saturday, ACC) — but the oddsmakers aren't expecting anything close to a repeat of that 58-3 beatdown. The Wolfpack enter as 16½-point favorites over a Pirates team making its debut against new, but familiar, coach Mike Houston — who built a reputation at James Madison of giving FBS teams fits. His Dukes team routed ECU in the 2017 opener and began last season with a 24-13 loss to the Wolfpack.

ACC Rooting Guide: Week One (theoftheu.com; Reynolds)

The college football season kicks off this week for nearly every program across the country. Despite it only being week one, there are key games for Miami to watch as the race for the Coastal Division title begins. The ACC begins the season with just two teams ranked in the Top 25, so this week also bears significant importance for the conference as it tries to prove its’ strength.

Thursday, August 29th
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ No.1 Clemson Tigers, 8:00 P.M. Eastern, ACC Network

This game marks several new beginnings. It is the first game that will be solely broadcast on the brand new ACC Network. Additionally, it is the first game for new Georgia Tech Head Coach Geoff Collins.

Unfortunately for Collins, he’ll try to install a brand new offense against one of the best defenses in the country. Clemson has to replace much of their defensive line, but the new starters will play an offensive line that is completely new to pass-blocking as the Yellow Jackets transition out of the triple-option offense.

Root for Clemson in this game. Georgia Tech is in the Coastal Division which means any in-conference loss for them benefits Miami.

Friday, August 30th
Utah State Aggies @ Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 8:00 P.M. Eastern, ACC Network

Wake Forest comes into this season hoping to make a fourth consecutive bowl game and continue the program’s recent run of success. They’ll face a tough test in week one, as they take on a tough Group of Five program that finished with an 11-2 record last season.

Wake Forest has long hoped to have more than just a 6-6 or 7-5 season, and a win in week one could give them the momentum boost they need to exceed expectations this year. Root for the Demon Deacons to win this out-of-conference game this week.

Saturday, August 31st
East Carolina Pirates @ N.C. State Wolfpack, 12:00 P.M. Eastern, ACC Network

Dave Doeren enters his seventh season in charge of the Wolfpack looking for a way to replace Ryan Finley at quarterback. This week Doeren chose Matt McKay as the new starter for N.C. State, and he’ll have big shoes to fill against their opponents from their neighboring state.

Expectations are lowered for the Wolfpack as they try to reset their roster after losing a lot of experience across the team this season. However, their talent should outclass East Carolina’s in a game Miami fans should root for N.C. State to win.

Duke Blue Devils @ No.2 Alabama Crimson Tide, (Atlanta, Georgia), 3:30 P.M. Eastern, ABC

2019 should be a rebuilding year for Duke. The Blue Devils have to replace first-round draft pick Daniel Jones. New starter Quentin Harris will be throwing to a receiving corps that has very little experience, and things could get ugly against a ridiculously talented Alabama defense.

To make matters worse for the Devils they could be without their most experienced returning linebacker, Koby Quansah, after he had surgery to stabilize a broken thumb. Duke’s defense will have to face Heisman hopeful Tua Tagovailoa, and a talented stable of receivers, and they could end up just hoping to cover the spread Saturday.

Root for Duke, but realistically its’ smart to just hope the ACC doesn’t get embarrassed during this game Saturday afternoon.

South Carolina Gamecocks vs North Carolina Tar Heels, (Charlotte, North Carolina), 3:30 P.M. Eastern, ESPN

Mack Brown will return to coaching in an interesting matchup against an SEC opponent to start the year. After a quarterback carousel hampered the Tar Heels last year freshman Sam Howell will hope to come in and lock down the starting role. He’ll face a talented South Carolina defense in his first ever college start.

For the Gamecocks, this season will come down to how they can navigate a brutal schedule. They have a lot of talent, but the schedule could end up forcing them into the bottom half of the SEC. A season with a lot of losses could hurt Will Muschamp’s job security, as some feel he hasn’t made the most of his talent over the last few years.

Miami fans should keep their eyes on UNC in this game since the ‘Canes will be on the road to face them next week. Root for the Tar Heels in this game, as a win for them would boost the reputation of the ACC.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Boston College Eagles, 4:00 P.M. Eastern, ACC Network

Justin Fuente looks to get his program back on track with an opening weekend game against an in-conference opponent. Virginia Tech will hope to have a bounce back year after their season fell off the rails in 2018. Additionally, the Hokies will be hoping to send off long-time defensive coordinator Bud Foster with a successful season.

For the Eagles they’ll hope to build upon a 7-5 season last year and make a jump forward behind star running back, and dark horse Heisman contender, AJ Dillon. The biggest test for BC will be to see if they can finally push past the seven win plateau, which has been unbreakable for the program in recent years.

Root for Boston College in this game. An early ACC loss for Virginia Tech would help Miami’s pursuit of the Coastal Division title.

No.22 Syracuse Orange @ Liberty Flames, 6:00 P.M. Eastern, ESPN+

Bizarrely, Syracuse goes on the road to Lynchburg, Virginia to start their season. The Orange are the only ACC team ranked in the preseason besides Clemson, and the hype is building around what could be one of the best Syracuse teams in recent memory. However, the Orange have a significant question at quarterback, as they must replace standout QB Eric Dungey. Tommy DeVito has been the heir apparent to Dungey since he was recruited into the program. This year DeVito will be hoping he can lead the Orange to a season that lives up to the hype and shocks the college football world.

Root for Syracuse to win big in this game and dominate a lesser opponent on the road.

The 79,118 fans piled into Memorial Stadium in Thursday’s season opener for Georgia Tech and Clemson to see the strong-armed, long-haired quarterback in orange.

You could even buy a blond, flowing wig with a headband on the Internet and wear it to the game. That head gear looked like one of those cheesy Heisman Trophy campaign props that schools used to mail to media members.

By the middle of the third quarter, though, it wasn’t super sophomore Trevor Lawrence who had put together a Heisman-esque performance against the Yellow Jackets.

It was the small-town Louisiana kid who typically shies away from attention.

Travis Etienne’s career-rushing night of 205 yards on 12 carries and a trio of touchdowns helped boost the Tigers to an easy 52-14 victory Thursday.

The junior moved into the top 10 all-time in career rushing yards at Clemson, and a 90-yard scoring scamper in the first quarter tied for the longest run in school history.

His impressive night even came after a difficult start. Etienne had negative-2 yards on his first two carries and turned the ball over via a fumble on Clemson’s third drive of the game.

The Syracuse University area’s newest apartment development combines a modern addition with a renovated century-old building originally built by one of the city’s best-known madames.

The Uncommon Apartments consist of 12 two-bedroom apartments in the Sylvester building, an apartment and retail building that opened on the southeast corner of East Fayette Street and Irving Avenue in 1910, and a new, four-story addition containing 30 one-bedroom apartments.

An easy walk to Syracuse University and SUNY Upstate Medical University, the apartments are already leased, half to students and half to young professionals.

The apartments are on the building’s top three floors. The first floor contains a total of 10,000 square feet of retail space. Strong Hearts Cafe, a vegan bistro, will be the first commercial tenant when it occupies 3,200 square feet of space in the new section this fall.

Rents start at $1,350 for the one-bedroom apartments and $1,425 for the two-bedroom units. Rents include utilities, cable TV, high-speed internet and use of a fitness center. Fifteen on-site and 35 off-site parking spaces are available for $125 a month.

The apartments feature granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and secure keyless entry.

Christopher Geiger, Scott Smith and Andrew Charles are the Long Island developers behind the $10 million project.

Geiger, a 1995 Syracuse University grad, said they named it Uncommon Apartments because of the unusual combination of an historic building and a connected modern structure.

Adding to the uncommon nature of the project is the fact that every apartment in the older building is unique, with no two units the same size and layout, he said.
