Welcome to the Fall Equinox!

The First Day of Fall, also known as The Fall Equinox or Autumnal Equinox, takes place when the Sun crosses the celestial equator—an imaginary line in the sky directly above the earth's Equator—from North to the South. When the autumnal equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, the vernal equinox occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time the sun shines directly on the Equator, and the length of day and night is nearly equal. Days continue to shorten in the Northern Hemisphere as the earth's axis begins to tilt away from the sun, and days lengthen in the Southern Hemisphere as the opposite occurs there. With this, fall, which is the transition period from summer to winter, is started in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperatures begin to cool and leaves fall from deciduous trees.

Five key takeaways from game against Syracuse (westernherald.com; Berry)

Western Michigan went into Saturday’s game as just a five-point underdog against Syracuse, an ACC team that was ranked in the top 25 in the preseason polls.

The Broncos threatened multiple times to pull off the upset, but ultimately the Orange were able to pull away for a 52-33 win to drop Western’s record to 2-2 overall as they head into Mid-American Conference play next week.

Here are five takeaways from Saturday’s shootout at the Carrier Dome.

Consistency issues plague defense

After giving up 51 points on the road to a suspect Michigan State offense two weeks ago, the Broncos had a nice bounce back effort at home last week, as they held Dan Ellington and a hot Georgia State offense to just 10 points.

On Saturday, however, the Broncos showed many of the same issues that appeared in the Michigan State game.

Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito went off, completing 27-of-35 passes for four touchdowns through the air. WMU’s secondary was not able to contain the likes of Trishton Jackson, who hauled in six passes for two touchdowns and 141 yards.

DeVito was also able to use his legs to hurt the Broncos defense as he went for 85 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. He broke off two big runs where Western Michigan’s defense left the middle of the field wide open, including his 36-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to put Syracuse up 21-0.

Broncos dig themselves another hole

Similar to the Michigan State game, WMU found themselves in a quick 21-0 hole out of the gate.

After the slow start, the Broncos were able to regain their footing as LeVante Bellamy exploded through a hole on a 47-yard run play to cut the Syracuse lead to 21-7 with 9:09 remaining in the second quarter.

WMU was slowly able to chip away as Jon Wassink found Giovanni Ricci late in the first half on a fourth-down play to cut it to 21-13.

The Final Word: Syracuse defeats Western Michigan, 52-33 (DO; podcast; Staff)

For a second straight year, Syracuse avoided a scare against Western Michigan. Like 2018, the game was a high-scoring affair. While Syracuse’s secondary weathered injuries, it held its own to give the Orange a point cushion. And first-year starter Tommy DeVito had his best overall game at SU with 287 yards and four passing touchdowns.

Here’s what our beats writers had to say after the 19-point win.

Syracuse 52, Western Michigan 33 — Three Things We Learned - The Juice Online (the juice; Blehar)

Syracuse’s offense finally came to life on Saturday afternoon against Western Michigan in a 52-33 win at the Carrier Dome. Here are three things we learned from the game.

TOMMY DEVITO EMERGES

Tommy DeVito was a huge reason for Syracuse’s victory this week.

After three weeks of sub-par play, DeVito had a superb bounce back game against Western Michigan, finishing with 287 yards passing and four touchdowns. DeVito’s fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon to WR Trishton Jackson finally put the Orange in complete control, giving SU a 45-33 point lead with 8:45 to go.

He spread the ball around to all his playmakers as well. Eight different players connected with DeVito with six of them having multi-reception games.

In addition to his fine passing performance DeVito showed how dangerous he is when in the open field, rushing for 85 yards on just nine carries (9.4 yards per attempt).

DeVito struggled earlier to take the reins of this fast paced offense after the departure of Eric Dungey, but while some may argue the verdict is still out, this performance against Western Michigan is a step in the right direction.

Three Things We Learned from Western Michigan – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Was it perfect? No. Was it pretty? No. Was it what it needed to be to start getting back on the right track? Yes.

The Maryland loss was ugly. The Clemson loss was disappointing. A lot hinged on this past weekend’s matchup with Western Michigan and while it answered some questions, some others have been raised. But when we look back on it, what exactly did we learn about Syracuse football in its 52-33 romp over the Broncos? Well, that’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?

Tommy’s Got Wheels

Who the heck knew this before the game? One of the biggest questions heading into the season was how different the offense would look without the supremely athletic and multi-faceted Eric Dungey at the offense. Sure, Tommy DeVito’s arm is undoubtedly better than Dungey’s, but the improvisational skills and ability to extend plays and be a legitimate threat in the run game are the reverse.

Some thought it would be a good thing because a more traditional gunslinger fits the Dino Babers system better. Those same people were then probably begging for some explosiveness and running ability at QB when the first three weeks didn’t go to plan on the offensive side of the ball. They wanted to see an offensive explosion. They got their wish on Saturday.

On top of completing 77% of his passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns, Tommy ran wild against the Broncos’ D, tallying 105 true rushing yards (discounting yardage lost on sacks) and scoring a TD while averaging nearly 10 yards per carry. That’s not to mention the ridiculous 60-yarder he broke off to set up the first score of the game for the Orange. He’s certainly not as fast or as physical as Dungey was but seeing him show the ability to create some excitement and positive yardage with his feet is a welcome change to what many anticipated. If he can continue to be even slightly more dual-threat the rest of the year, only good things will come.

Syracuse vs. Western Michigan report card: Offense explodes in needed Orange win (auburnpub.com; Sciria)

Saturday’s Syracuse-Western Michigan game was an offensive slugfest in which both teams combined for 85 points and a slew of big plays. Seven of the 12 touchdowns came on plays of at least 23 yards and six from more than 35 yards.

Ultimately the Orange were able to pull away, after the Broncos overcame an early 21-0 deficit to get within five, at 38-33. Syracuse scored the final two touchdowns to turn a nailbiter into a laugher.

FIVE ORANGES to Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito, who has had his share of struggles so far this season but the redshirt sophomore played his best game so far on Saturday. DeVito finished with 27 completions in 35 attempts for 287 yards and four touchdowns.

But DeVito made his biggest contributions with his legs as well as his brains. DeVito ripped off a 60-yard run on Syracuse’s second play from scrimmage which set up their first touchdown. He also scored on a 36-yard run. DeVito will always be compared to his predecessor Eric Dungey, who was always eager to take off when flushed from the pocket, against the Broncos, he finished with a career-high 85 yards.

SEPT. 21 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DeVito leads Syracuse to 52-33 win (timestelgram.com; AP; Frank)

Syracuse coach Dino Babers was pleased his team’s offense had come out of its shell, but in a game that saw the teams combine for more than 1,100 yards and 85 points, it was the defense that helped seal a 52-33 win for the Orange.

Western Michigan (2-2) had rallied from a 21-0 deficit to narrow the margin to 38-33 with a little more than 10 minutes remaining and had a fourth-and-1 from its own 42. Momentum was on the Broncos’ side and the Carrier Dome knew it. But Syracuse defensive tackle Kenneth Ruff and safety Evan Foster stopped Davon Tucker about a foot short of the first down. On the subsequent drive, tight end Aaron Hackett caught his second touchdown pass of the game from Tommy DeVito and the Orange (2-2) could exhale.

“We treat fourth-down stops like a turnover,” Babers said. “That was a really big deal. I thought the one stop was unbelievable where they originally gave them the first down (on third down). For us to come back and stop them on that series was a really big part of the game.”

“We have to be able to convert a fourth-and-short,” said Western Michigan coach Tim Lester, who served as Syracuse offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2013-2015.

DeVito passed for a career-high four touchdowns and ran for one score as Syracuse broke a modest two-game losing streak.

“I’m a throw-first guy but definitely can run if I have to,” said DeVito, who broke off a career-high 60-yard run.

“I thought it was cool that he started the game and finished the game with the same number of interceptions (zero),” Babers said.

Hackett had a career day with six receptions.

...

Tommy DeVito leads Syracuse to win over Western Michigan fox47news.com; AP)

Tommy DeVito passed for a career-high four touchdowns and ran for one score and Syracuse broke a two-game losing streak to defeat Western Michigan 52-33 Saturday.

The Orange (2-2) raced to a 21-0 lead but had to withstand a Western Michigan (2-2) rally as the Broncos closed to 38-33. A 9-yard touchdown catch by Aaron Hackett, who had two scores on a career day of six receptions, extended Syracuse's margin to 45-33 with under nine minutes to go. Trishton Jackson, who had six receptions for 141 yards, also had two touchdown catches for the Orange. Moe Neal led Syracuse with 123 yards rushing and two scores.

Syracuse had been held to a total of 50 points in its previous three games.

"I thought it was a game of different mood swings, different momentum swings. Felt like one minute we had control of the game and the next thing you know you're back in a football game," Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. "Really proud of the offense to kind of come out of their shell and put some points on the board against any defense in college football, but I'm disappointed in the turnovers. Some were unforced, and we have to do a better job if we're going to be the kind of football team we want to be."

Syracuse’s secondary weathers injuries in 52-33 win over Western Michigan (DO; Graham)

Eric Coley started breaking on the ball before it left Western Michigan quarterback Jon Wassink’s hand.

Late in the fourth quarter of Syracuse’s win against WMU on Saturday, Coley, playing in the place of injured defensive backs Andre Cisco and Antwan Cordy, read the middle curl route perfectly and stepped in front of Wassink’s throw.

”It was really cool to see Eric get an interception,” Dino Babers said post game. “He’s going to take a ribbing for falling down like he did right there. I think he’d have had a touchdown if he’d have went to the left. Oh well, he’s going to have to live with that one.”

Coley’s interception, the first of his career, extended SU’s streak of games with an interception — one that began with Cisco’s pick against WMU to open the 2018 season — to 17-straight games.

On a day where the Orange’s (2-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) normally loaded secondary was down two starters and then lost one of the replacements midway through the third quarter, SU’s defense managed to hold Western Michigan’s (2-2) passing offense mostly in check in a 52-33 win. SU held Wassink to a 50% completion rate, only two touchdowns and Coley’s late pick. And despite allowing 356 passing yards, SU’s secondary always felt that it had the upper hand.

While it wasn’t always perfect on Saturday, the Orange played one of their best games of the season down two starters in the secondary.

Louisville football must cut down mental errors to improve after its bye week (courier-journal.com; Robinson)

While many may look at Malik Cunningham’s fourth-quarter interception as the reason Louisville lost its ACC opener Saturday, it didn't all fall on that one play.

Louisville lost 35-24 to Florida State after a plethora of mistakes, but nearly all of them can be attributed to mental errors.

Look no further than the play before Cunningham’s interception. On second-and-2 from the Florida State 21-yard line, Cunningham went to hand the ball off to Hassan Hall, but Hall wasn’t expecting the hand off. Instead of receiving the ball and hitting a hole on a play that had the potential for a first down, Hall went the other way and Cunningham lost five yards. One play later, instead of extending its lead, Louisville gave the ball back to Florida State.

Then there was the blitz from defensive back Anthony Johnson that led to a Tamorrion Terry go-ahead touchdown catch. Johnson wasn’t supposed to blitz from the edge, but because he did Terry was wide open.

And then, when Louisville got the stop it needed on third-and-goal, a roughing the kicker penalty by Marlon Character ended any chance of another comeback. At that point, Louisville was down four points, and a FSU field goal would’ve kept the Cardinals within one score.

Instead, Florida State scored two plays later to seal the game.

"If we do nothing and they make the field goal it’s a seven-point game and we have an opportunity to go tie the game, instead we gave up a touchdown,” Satterfield said.

ACC Football: What we learned around the ACC in week four (yellowjackedup.com; Callaghan-Croley)

Geoff Collins and his Georgia Tech football program had this past weekend off but we were able to learn quite a bit about the other 11 football programs in the ACC this weekend.

Boston College: 30-16 win over Rutgers

After a shocking loss last week to Kansas, Boston College struggled against Rutgers on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights are arguably the worst Power 5 program in America over the last few years which doesn’t scream great news for Boston College. They got a nice win in week one over Virginia Tech and cruised against FCS opponent Richmond, but the last two weeks have cast some doubts about the Eagles.

Clemson: 52-10 win over Charlotte

There was a kickoff. There was a ton of Clemson points and the defending national champions rolled once again. Rinse and repeat for the remainder of the regular season. The Tigers are going to cruise to an another ACC title and playoff appearance.

Duke: OFF

Duke got a bye week this week and will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday night, looking for their third straight win.

Florida State: 35-24 win over Louisville

The first thing you should know about this game is that Florida State was once up 21-0. Then they were losing 24-21 in the second half and for a while it looked like Willie Taggert’s program was headed for another baffling loss. Looking at the numbers won’t matter here, Florida State isn’t a good program right now and Willie Taggert may be out of Tallahassee by seasons end.

Louisville: 35-24 loss to Florida State

Credit to Louisville for making this once a game after going down 21-0 but like Florida State, their not a good program right now. But that’s expected, they need a total rebuild with Scott Satterfield now at the helm and were the vastly less talented team compared to that of the Seminoles. They showed a lot of heart and grit in their loss, like they did in week one against Notre Dame. The Cardinals are not going to be contending for anything, any time soon but they’re a team that may be able to squeak out two or three more wins this season.

https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/acc/university-of-miami/article235292952.html (miamiherald.com; Degnan)

Amid the gloom following the University of Miami’s ugly 17-12 home victory Saturday against Central Michigan (a mid-major team that finished 1-11 in 2018), there is reason for optimism.

The rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference, except, of course, for defending national champion Clemson, is not exactly sterling.

“With a bye week comes time to heal, as well as time to really get into our next opponent,’’ said linebacker Shaq Quarterman, whose career-high 14 tackles (and two tackles for loss) Saturday led all players. “The fact that our next opponent is [in] ACC play, you’ve got to take advantage of it. So, with the one we have coming up... we have to put in the work.’’

The Coastal Division’s Hurricanes (2-2, 0-1 ACC), who face ACC opponents in the next seven of eight regular-season games, are a microcosm of their league.

Only the Atantic Division’s Clemson and Coastal’s Virginia are undefeated overall and in league play. And Virginia (4-0, 2-0), which meets UM on Oct. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium for a Friday-night game, had to score 14 points Saturday in the final quarter to defeat Conference USA’s Old Dominion (1-2 overall).

Wake Forest, in the Atlantic, is 4-0 overall with victories over Utah State, Rice, North Carolina (which defeated Miami) and Elon, but has yet to enter ACC play. Wake’s win over UNC didn’t count in the ACC standings because the two teams wanted to continue a long-time rivalry and were given permission by the league to count it as a non-conference game.’

https://accsports.com/acc-news/wake-forest-lands-in-coaches-poll-just-outside-of-the-ap-top-25/ (accsports.com; Geisinger)

For the first time since the 2008 season, Wake Forest is ranked inside the top 25 of one of college football’s main polls. After the team’s blowout win over Elon, Wake Forest lands at No. 24 in the Coaches Poll. However, the Demon Deacons landed just on the outskirts of the AP Poll; Wake Forest received 73 votes, the most of any team outside of the top 25.

One has to think that if Wake Forest can defeat Boston College on the road next week, that the Deacons will land inside the AP’s poll, too.

Once again, though, Clemson remained at No. 1 in this week’s AP Poll — just ahead of Alabama and Georgia. Virginia, which dealt with a bit of a scare from ODU this weekend, jumped up to No. 18 in this week’s poll.

POLL ALERT: Wisconsin breaks into top 10 of AP Top 25 presented by @askRegions; Cal up to No. 15; Michigan, Utah, UCF fall; Clemson stays No. 1.

Elon - 7 | Wake Forest - 49

Dang, is Wake Forest good now? The Demon Deacons finished up their non-conference schedule in style today as they stomped FCS Elon while piling up 600 yards of offense with nearly 50 points. Quarterback Jamie Newnan had another incredible game, passing for 351 yards and five touchdowns. Freshman tailback Kenneth Walker III was a good complement for him, getting the ball nine times on the ground for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Wake Forest defense held Elon to just 171 yards of total offense and just over three yards a play.

Wake Forest plays again Saturday at Boston College.

Western Michigan - 33 | Syracuse - 52

After a 20-point third quarter from Western Michigan, this game ended up being a little bit closer than it probably should have been, with the score being as close as 38-33. The Orange were able to fight away and pull out the victory though. Western Michigan actually outgained Syracuse 541 yards to 527. The Orange were able to win the turnover battle though en route to their victory. Quarterback Thomas DeVito was Mr. Do-it-All for the Orange, passing for 287 yards and four touchdowns and also adding 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Syracuse plays again Saturday against Holy Cross.

Boston College - 30 | Rutgers - 16

Speaking of games that were closer than they probably should have been, there was BC-Rutgers. Both teams traded the lead a few times, but Boston College was just able to outlast them. They won the game by relying on their running game and forcing a couple turnovers on defense, which is the most Boston College way to win a game. AJ Dillon ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and David Bailey and Anthony Brown added a combined 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Boston College plays again Saturday against Wake Forest.

Penalties per Game as of 9/20/19

It's no secret - penalties have been a problem for ACC football teams so far this season. If you saw the end of the Florida State/Virginia game, you probably couldn't believe how many first downs were given up due to penalties.

I feel confident in saying that most ACC football teams will commit more penalties Saturday - except for Duke, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech (all of whom have byes). That said, this is what it looks like before the games of week 4...

2019 Week 4 Results - Good!

Well, as bad as last was, this week is almost that good.

Superlatives:
Best non-conference win: #15 UCF 34 @ Pitt 35
True, a win last weekend would've been better, but this ain't bad. Bonus: sweet revenge!

Best unranked P5 win: Boston College 30 @ Rutgers 16
Way to get that taste out of your mouth, Eagles! TBH, this game was more important than last week anyway, because BC recruits Rutgers' backyard.

Best ACC game: Louisville 24 @ Florida State 35
Is this a sign that Taggart is starting to turn things around?

Worst loss: Appalachian State 34 @ UNC 31
After winning their first 2 games, the Tar Heels are 0-2 against in-state teams.

Worst transitory loss: Temple 22 @ Buffalo 38
The team that beat the team that whipped Syracuse just lost to SUNY.

Close calls, but wins:
Central Michigan 12 @ Miami 17
CMU shouldn't be able to hold the Canes to 17

Western Michigan 33 @ Syracuse 52
WMU shouldn't be able to score 33 on the Orange

Old Dominion 17 @ #21 Virginia 28
The Monarchs had a bye before UVA and used the extra prep to jump out to a 10-0 lead, but the Cavaliers made adjustments at halftime and outscored ODU 21-0 in the second half.

Who Helped by Losing - 9/22/19

Sometimes who lost is just as important as who won...

Who helped the ACC by losing?
Here are the ranked teams who potentially got out of the way by losing:
#11 Michigan lost at #13 Wisconsin, 14-35
#15 UCF lost at Pitt, 34-35
#17 Texas A&M suffered a second loss - at home - to #8 Auburn, 20-28
#19 Washington State lost at home to UCLA, 63-67
#24 Arizona State lost at home to Colorado, 31-34
#25 TCU lost at home to SMU, 38-41

Meanwhile both Virginia and Wake Forest won, remaining unbeaten. UVA should move up, and Wake should move into the top 25.

Syracuse football wide receiver Sean Riley achieved a career milestone on Saturday. Here’s how he has exceeded career expectations.

In the middle of a thrilling shootout between Western Michigan and Syracuse football on Saturday came some history being broken.

Syracuse football wideout Sean Riley is now the all-time leader in kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage, per the University.

After the game Riley went to social media to share his thoughts on making history:

“Thankful for the opportunity and thank you to everyone who’s blocked for me on kick return let’s finish this season out the right way Go Orange.”

Riley came to Syracuse as an athlete, not sure what his position would ultimately be on the Orange.

In high school, Sean excelled as a running back and put up some intriguing numbers as a receiver as well.

As a freshman he saw action in all 12 games and led all of college football in kickoff return yardage, that’s one way to make a statement. In that same season, he also set new single-season records both at Syracuse and in the conference.

In his sophomore season, Sean took more of a role in the offense while still maintaining all of his responsibilities on special teams. Also was named to the All-ACC Academic Team.

While in 2018, Sean Riley had a career-year as a junior. Played in every game (13) and started 12 of them at slot receiver. Sean led the team in all-purpose yards (1,424) and averaged a record-breaking 13.8 yards on each of his all-purpose plays. That’s the second-highest figure in program history.

Heading into his senior season expectations have never been higher.

College football guru Phil Steele had Sean listed as one of the best punt returners in the country heading into 2019. When we spoke with him prior to the season, he strongly believed that Riley could be playing football on Sundays with another strong campaign.

The Onondaga Lake Parkway closed Sunday afternoon in Liverpool for a movie shoot featuring actor Vince Vaughn, according to village residents.

Onondaga County 911 dispatchers said they were notified around 4 p.m. the parkway was closing, but they were not told why. Dispatchers also said the state Department of Transportation was being notified, but they did not have any other information about the road closure.

A Liverpool firefighter said he did not know why the parkway was closed either. Liverpool police and DOT officials could not be reached for comment.

Liverpool village residents, however, said they saw a sign saying the parkway would be closed from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday for American High, the Hollywood-backed film studio in Liverpool.

Over the last several days, Central New Yorkers have reported seeing “Swingers” and “Wedding Crashers” star Vince Vaughn around town, including on a movie set. The reason is because, according to Deadline, Hulu has secured the exclusive rights to “The Binge,” starring Vaughn with Skyler Gisondo (“Santa Clarita Diet”), Eduardo Franco (“American Vandal”) and Dexter Darden (“The Maze Runner”). The comedy film puts a funny twist on the premise of “The Purge,” set in an alternate time period where all drugs and alcohol are illegal but everyone can party on “Binge day" once a year.
