The first American comic book is seen as being Famous Funnies, which was released in 1933, although many books and comics predated it and helped lead to its creation. For example, an 1842 hardcover book titled The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck was made up of comics. In the early 20th century periodicals that contained comics were printed in the United States. American comic books are divided into different eras. [/SIZE][/I] [SIZE=12px][I]In 1938, the release of Superman launched the Golden Age of comic books. Superhero comics were introduced and very popular for most of this era. [/I][/SIZE] [I][SIZE=12px]The Silver Age is seen as beginning with the introduction of Flash in 1956, which led to a rejuvenation in superhero comic books. The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man came about during this era, and the era lasted until sometime in the early 1970's, when the Bronze Age began, which lasted until the mid-1980's. From the end of the Bronze Age until the present day is known as the Modern Age. Non-mainstream comic books such as underground comix sprang up in the 1960's, followed by alternative comics in the 1980's. "Yeah, we figured it out," Syracuse receiver Trishton Jackson explained. "It was our speed and our tempo. We started to go faster in practice and it transitioned to the game Saturday. That was really the main goal during the week and we executed it on Saturday." "Really just moving the ball and just executing," Orange quarterback Tommy DeVito said. "When the defense gives us turnovers, putting points up on the board, whether it's a field goal or a touchdowns, obviously we always want a touchdown -- but any kind of points is good. So, to be able to do that compared to what we did two weeks ago, is a lot better." Both DeVito and Jackson connected in a big way against the Broncos, accounting for six catches and 141 yards. Orange coach Dino Babers knows it's a work in progress. ''Saw some good, saw some bad,'' Babers said Monday after a 52-33 home win against Western Michigan. ''Still continuing to grow. I think they got better.'' The Orange (2-2) host Championship Subdivision foe Holy Cross (1-2) on Saturday before going into a bye week. Syracuse began the season with a 24-0 road win over Liberty and the victory on the weekend came after bad losses to Maryland and Clemson . Syracuse scored a combined 26 points in those games. ''Football is all about adversity and how you respond to it,'' Babers said. ''To be able to have those two losses and be able to come back this weekend, produce and hold our own, so to say, in the Dome, means a lot. It shows how much character we have in the room.'' The Broncos still put a lot of points on the board to continue a disturbing trend since the opener. In the past three games, the Orange defense has allowed 137 points and 1,819 yards - an average of 603.3 yards a game - and is ranked 124th nationally in total defense. Still, Syracuse is tied for the top spot in the nation with 11 turnovers gained - six interceptions and five fumble recoveries. The Orange recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass against Western Michigan to extend their streak of consecutive games with a takeaway to 18, the third-longest active streak in the Bowl Subdivision. ''I hope that we start getting more of the defense that we saw earlier in the year,'' Babers said. ''The one thing that our defense has been outstanding about is getting turnovers. Whose stock is up the most and down the most from the start of the season to now? Stock Up Trishton Jackson Jackson has established himself as the number one guy. After his second two touchdown, 140+ yards performance of the season against Western Michigan Saturday, he was named ACC receiver of the week. The Michigan State transfer has been as advertised. Jackson is currently fourth in the ACC in receiving yards. Sterling Hofrichter On one hand maybe its not the best that a punter is your second highest stock up of the season four games in. On the other hand, though, punters are underratedly valuable. Hofrichter is top five in the country in average yards for punt right now. All the dude does is back opponents up inside the 20-yard line. Aaron Hackett Hackett had caught eight passes in his Syracuse career and one career touchdown before Western Michigan. On Saturday, the junior reeled in six passes and two touchdowns. He entered the season as the second string tight end to Chris Elmore and now it appears, based on the way the other receivers are contributing, Syracuse could really use his pass-catching skills going forward, especially in the red zone. Lakiem Williams Frankly, it’s hard to pick much from the defense after three straight games of 30+ points allowed (first time that has happened since 2011 for Syracuse). We should give some credit to Williams though. He leads the team in tackles (32) and sacks (2.5) through four games. Not too shabby for a guy who never really played outside of special teams coming into the year. Stock Down Nykeim Johnson This is the biggest mystery. Johnson is averaging 1.3 yards per catch this season and has compiled a measly 13 receiving yards in four games. The same guy who caught at least one pass in every game last year and was known for being a “deep threat.” Three of his four touchdowns last year were 40+ yards. He has gone from a key consistent part of each Syracuse game to a complete non-factor. That’s not a good thing. Take last year’s Orange: They were a team that rarely turned the ball over, took the ball away, dominated the kicking game, pressured the opposing quarterback and relied on a tough athletic quarterback on offense. Their strengths were consistent and unrelenting, their weaknesses were unsurprising and overcomeable. Dino Babers came into this season talking up the defense and tempering expectations for the offense. After a week 1 shutout against Liberty, it seemed he hit the nail on the head. Are the Orange destined for a season of low-scoring defensive wars? Since Liberty, that theory has been debunked. SU has allowed 63, 41 and 33 against Maryland, Clemson and Western Michigan. Granted, the defense was impressive against the Tigers and banged up in the secondary against the Broncos. Still, is an up-tempo team that plays in a Dome going to ever going be a defensive team? Time-of-possession disparity wears out the defense when the Syracuse offense stalls. And Dome conditions breed offense. Think about the Saints, Falcons, Colts and Cowboys. All of those NFL teams play at least some home football indoors and none design their roster for defense. It’s hard to see SU football playing like a physical defensive BigTen school this season, or ever. Syracuse needs to put points up if it’s going to win games. So let’s ask the same question: what is the offensive identity of this team? With a first-year starting quarterback and an inexperienced offensive line, it was easy to see this team as run-heavy offense. Dino Babers had three capable backs to mix in with Moe Neal, Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard. Although sacks count towards rushing stats in NCAA (stupidly), SU is getting out rushed 772 to 535. The burning question that has been in everyone’s mind leading up to last week’s game versus Western Michigan: Who would win in the battle of Universities located on top of a hill? Syracuse or the Hilltoppers of Western Michigan? Now we can move on to this week’s contest. But I kid… Syracuse took a major step forward in last week’s game against the Broncos and executed their game plan for a solid win. In the I told you so category the first three pass plays were to speedster No. 7 Dee Eskridge of WMU that may have had a greater impact in the game, except on the third play he was injured and did not return. This aided the Andre Cisco-less Orange on defense and helped the OITNF on offense as this had the Broncos without their starting cornerback. On to this week’s opponent, Holy Cross plays in the Patriot league of the FCS. They are considered a Division 1 school but have their own playoffs and are limited to the number of scholarships that they can give out. The FCS allows 65 total scholarships compared to the 85 allowed by the BCS. Members of the Patriot League, wait for it, further limit themselves to 15 scholarships! So when the Crusaders trot out onto the turf of the dome they will be fielding 70 fewer scholarship athletes than the Orange. While realistically they’re truly only one win below what their expectation would’ve been at this point in the season, the way they’ve gotten to .500 hasn’t been pretty. The Orange shut out Liberty in Week 1, but only scored 24 points, in spite of their offense. Then, it all went downhill, as the ‘Cuse got throttled at the hands of Maryland in College Park, and then, while they had numerous chances, got trounced again, this time at home against Clemson. Finally, just last week, the Tommy DeVito led offense looked a lot better, but it wasn’t a convincing win, as Syracuse won at home against a high-powered Western Michigan offense, 52-33. Now, as the regular season is now already one-third of the way through, the Orange have a virtual write-off win against FCS Holy Cross, before a bye-week, and then the start of ACC play. Here are all the details and updates. Syracuse football has fought back to .500, despite battling through a wide array of injuries. On Monday, Dino Babers spoke with the media and hoped that his roster would come together by the time the full ACC schedule rolls around. Two key players on both sides of the ball have been out for weeks. Syracuse starting defensive tackle McKinley Williams has been out since back in August with a lower-body injury. While Sam Heckel missed the last three games and is likely to miss this Saturday’s game vs Holy Cross. “I would hope that McKinley would be getting ready somewhere around that time.” Also in Week 4 vs Western Michigan, the Orange suffered a key injury in the secondary to Antwan Cordy. It was the moment where fans of the FSU football program thought things couldn’t get any worse – just ahead of the second half letdown that has been the symbolic moment in each game this season, the injury bug hit the Seminoles in the worst possible spot when quarterback James Blackman went down with a knee injury. While Blackman’s injury put a damper on the third quarter as Louisville staged their comeback to take the lead into the fourth quarter, it also allowed one thing to come to the forefront: the Seminoles are going to be just fine if grad transfer Alex Hornibrook has to start at least one game for the Seminoles. Hornibrook came into the game and took over, getting FSU football the lead back with a great touchdown pass to a wide open Tamorrion Terry that helped take the pressure off. The Noles would add another touchdown later in the quarter and looked like a team that was – dare I say – impressive in the 11 point win. With the news this weekend first reported by Noles247 that Blackman suffered a MCL sprain, the Seminoles now may have a chance to turn to their backup for the NC State game – and with his resume and the way he performed, that’s just fine with myself and a decent amount of the fan base. Some people seem to forget that this is a player in Hornibrook who was essentially one game away from the College Football Playoff just two seasons ago at Wisconsin and has a pretty good record leading a Power Five program for the three seasons he did with the Badgers before graduating and transferring to Tallahassee this summer. Blade sports writer Kyle Rowland asked Anthony: Is it time for Notre Dame football to join a conference? Well, that depends on who you ask. For me, a Big Ten guy, I believe they should be in the Big Ten. Based on location, ease of travel, and natural rivalries that already exist, it only make sense. But, here’s the thing: Notre Dame is already in a conference. Sort of. Notre Dame began its relationship with the ACC in 2014, when the Fighting Irish joined the conference in all sports except for football, for which it remains independent. Within that agreement (which in 2017 was extended through the 2037 season), Notre Dame football gets to retain its independence while playing an average of five ACC football games each season. The ACC gets a boost from Notre Dame road games on their turf, while ND still gets their home slate on NBC. Notre Dame still gets to participate in the ACC’s bowl tie-in games and still gets to schedule whomever they want outside of the roughly five ACC matchups each season. Now, if ND were to surrender its independence, they are contractually obligated to join the ACC. With ND’s contract already intact with NBC, a deal that pulls in roughly $15 million per year through the 2025 season, the athletic department just got another boost with the launch of ESPN’s new “ACC Network”, which will more than likely have a larger impact on the non-football sports. If you’re Notre Dame, you can’t get the collections coming fast enough. ND has worked the ACC for all the benefits, while still getting their own private TV deal. If you’re ND, it was a win-win. The ACC receives nothing from the Notre Dame-NBC deal. They just receive the prestige of the name coming into their conference for five games per season. I would like to credit Notre Dame on this front. It has kept their “nonconference” schedule entertaining. This past weekend in Georgia was a great college football showcase. I could go on another rant about how that game in particular should be the gold standard for every athletic director in the country. Get away from these big-time matchups in Dallas at “Jerry’s World”, these neutral site money grabs and get major matchups back on campus. Notre Dame this season plays No. 3 Georgia (23-17 loss) from the SEC, No. 21 USC and Stanford from the Pac-12, No. 20 Michigan (make sure that No. 20 is in pencil because they are not the 20th best team in the country) of the Big Ten, plus they’ll sprinkle in BGSU on Oct. 5. Louisville, No. 18 Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, and Duke round out their ACC schedule. Navy and New Mexico make up the remaining two games. The fact that ND continues to schedule some of these big-name programs is impressive and should be applauded. The Fighting Irish will need to go undefeated to keep their playoff hopes alive, and without a conference title game, Brian Kelly and Co. could still be on the outside-looking-in even with nine straight wins to end the season. An 11–1 regular season would still be a major accomplishment for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish host Virginia and USC in two of the next three weeks, and road matchups against Michigan and Stanford provide potential pitfalls. Ian Book will need to be spectacular for Notre Dame’s season to last into 2020. So where will the Irish and the rest of college football conclude their respective 2019 seasons? Possible overscheduling. 2016: Again two P5's - Penn State and Oklahoma State - Pitt split them. 2017: Same two P5 OOC teams, but this time Pitt lost both. 2018: Pitt played Penn State, at ranked UCF, and at Notre Dame - and lost all three! Overscheduling! 2019: Pitt played at Penn State and hosted ranked UCF - and split them. Reasonable schedule, IMO. VERDICT: Pitt overscheduled a couple of times, particularly in 2018. However, the bigger problem for the Panthers is consistency - they'll upset a great team and lose to a mediocre one in the same season! Still, I don't see much upside in scheduling Oklahoma State... Next, let's examine Syracuse' OOC Schedules: 2013: Cuse faced 2 P5 foes - Penn State and Northwestern - losing both. Possible overscheduling. 2014: Still 2 P5's - Maryland and Notre Dame - same result. Possible overscheduling. 2015: Only one P5 this season - but it was Top 10 LSU; also lost at USF 2016: One P5 - Notre Dame, which they lost to; also lost to USF. Reasonable 2017: Lost to Middle Tennessee St and at LSU. Reasonable 2018: One P5 - Notre Dame, which beat the Orange. Reasonable 2019: One P5 - at Maryland, which was a loss for Syracuse. Reasonable VERDICT: When the Orange first began playing in the ACC, Syracuse was accustomed to needing some big-name non-conference opponents, which resulted in overscheduling the first 2 seasons - but since then it's been reasonable - although I still don't see why they scheduled LSU. The Orange seem to be in a pretty good rhythm now in terms of schedule - the o nly issue now is winning! __________ BOTTOM LINE: It's unfortunate that neither ACC newbie has managed to go undefeated in OOC yet, but I don't think it's been due to overscheduling except for a few schedules.
