Welcome to Veterans Day!

Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable)[1][2]. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.[3] There is another military holiday, Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that also occurs in May, which honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

Dear, Dino: Syracuse football fans want their faith back (PS; Axe)

Hey Coach Babers. It’s me, Brent.

I’m sure in your four years living in Central New York you have discovered that we love a good bargain.
It was worth it to invest our time, money and emotion in Syracuse football the past few years.

The Orange scored points in bunches, pulled off yearly upsets of ranked teams and your postgame speeches became a reliable source of viral entertainment.

Your message of faith was fulfilled last year when SU won 10 games, returned to the Top 25 polls and provided a trip to Florida to the Camping World Bowl to escape the December cold.

What a difference a year makes, eh?

Nobody expected the 2018 season to just magically repeat itself, but with your Orange sitting with a record of 3-6 without a win over a Power Five or ACC team, going the polar opposite direction was not a good strategy.
I’m not telling you anything you don’t know about the struggles your team has faced.

What I’m trying to tell you is I’ve seen and heard grumbling like this before about the football program in this town. It was nice to take a break from it for the past few years, but it is back like a bad penny.

My inbox, comments section and Twitter feed are filled with the usual suggestions on how you should fix this, so I can only imagine what yours look like.

The outcries of the fan messages fit the usual categories.

Notre Dame routs Duke, Syracuse football’s next opponent (PS; AP)

Ian Book rushed for a career-best 139 yards and threw four touchdown passes and No. 15 Notre Dame routed Duke 38-7 on Saturday night.

Book finished 18 of 32 for 181 yards passing, Chris Finke caught touchdown passes of 18 and 6 yards, and Chase Claypool and George Takacs also had short scoring catches.

C'Bo Flemister rushed 2 yards for a TD for the Fighting Irish (7-2, No. 15 CFP). In winning their second straight and fifth in six games, they rolled up 469 total yards, led 21-0 before the Blue Devils picked up their second first down and kept them at bay the rest of the way.

Book became the first Notre Dame quarterback with 100 yards both rushing and passing since Brandon Wimbush did it two years ago against Wake Forest.

Quentin Harris was 16 of 28 for 102 yards for Duke (4-5) with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Young late in the second quarter. The Blue Devils have lost three straight and four of five since starting 3-1.
The Fighting Irish rushed for 288 yards — their best game on the ground in a month — against a decent Duke run defense, and 148 of those yards came on three carries, runs of 45 and 53 yards by Book and a 40-yarder by Jahmir Smith. Both co-starters — Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong — were back, but they combined for just 27 yards on 10 attempts.

The Blue Devils have played three 2018 College Football Playoff programs in 12 months — Clemson last November, and Alabama and now Notre Dame this season — and lost them all by a combined 108-16, failing to reach double-figure scoring in any of them. This loss puts Duke in bowl jeopardy: The Blue Devils must win two of their final three — against Syracuse (at home Saturday), No. 22 Wake Forest and resurgent Miami — to reach their third straight bowl game.

Miami Hurricanes Football: Bowl Options for 2019 (stateoftheu.com; Underwood)

The Miami Hurricanes earned bowl eligibility with a 52-27 win over Louisville on Senior Day and Homecoming yesterday. That win, Miami’s 6th, secures a post-season game for Manny Diaz’s Canes in his first year at the helm.
With that being the case, the only thing left for Miami to find out is not if they’ll be bowling, but where. With the announcements set to take place in about 4 weeks — after Conference Championship games — let’s take a look at some of the places Miami may end up for their postseason game. (Note: I’m not doing matchups, just destination for Miami)

Tiers and things

Before we get to the bowl options, let’s look at the ACC Bowl Tie-ins. They’re split into tiers. It’s simple, really. Take a look:

New Year’s Six

If the ACC #1 team (Clemson or...Clemson) isn’t in the College Football Playoff, then they’ll get one of the spots in the New Year’s Six bowls (Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl) that aren’t the CFB Semi-finals games. But, Clemson seems likely to be in the CFP yet again, so that’s merely an academic pursuit, really.
After being a CFP semi-final last season, the Orange Bowl is back at the top of the ACC bowl pecking order for 2019. The highest ranked non-Playoff ACC team will get placed here. There could be more to this but that’s only if there’s like a 4 or 5-way tie for this spot. Just go into this with the belief that the Coastal Division champ, the team that Clemson plays in the ACC Championship game, will get this spot. It’ll make your life easier.

College Football Corner: Virginia and Virginia Tech capitalize on the crazy Coastal Division | WTOP (wtop.com; Preston)

You just knew this was going to happen. On a Saturday where No. 1 LSU outscored No. 2 Alabama and No. 5 Penn State would fall at unbeaten Minnesota despite a fourth quarter rally, two schools in the Commonwealth have placed themselves on track for an epic Thanksgiving weekend showdown. Blame an ACC that divided its schools 15 years ago anticipating a much better showing from Miami. Blame programs that are in full or semi-rebuild. Blame a setup where three of your seven schools (Duke, UNC, UVa) value their standing more in basketball than football. In a world where most Power Five Conference divisions have one or two dominant programs (Alabama in the SEC West and Ohio State in the Big Ten East, for example), everybody wins in the ACC Coastal.

The past six years have seen six different schools represent the Coastal in the ACC Championship Game, and it only seemed comical to pump up Virginia (the lone holdout) as the natural successor this fall. Thankfully the softest Power Five Conference division with multiple schools in rebuild or revamp mode provides the Cavaliers with the perfect avenue to complete what would be one crazy seven-year run for the Coastal. But to do so they have to get past their nemesis — if you haven’t heard or read before, Virginia has not beaten Virginia Tech in football since the Hokies entered the ACC in 2004. The Hokies also once ruled the Coastal with an iron fist, taking the division five times over a seven-year span. Virginia Tech still has to play their way into position over the next two weeks, but I’m marking Nov. 29 on my calendar.
Maryland (3-7, 1-6 Big Ten) was never in their game at No. 3 Ohio State; the Buckeyes would score on their first six possessions en route to a 73-14 rout that wasn’t as close as the score would suggest. Perfect time to go on a bye week; the team’s other week off came against a loss at Temple that set the season’s ceiling. This defeat established the floor. There is hope: the team closes with consecutive games against teams that are currently 4-5.

Terrapin Triumphs: Javon Leake continues to shine on special teams with a 70-yard kickoff return. Keandre Jones tallied eight tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble against his former teammates (the senior transfer played in 34 games with the Buckeyes before coming to College Park). The men’s basketball team bounced back from an early 12-point deficit to beat Rhode Island Saturday night, allowing those who made the flight the chance to see the Terps score 73 points in a different sport.

Terrapin Troubles: Seven sacks allowed by an offensive line that remains a work in progress but remains the key for future teams if they want to compete in the Big Ten East. The offense converted just two of 11 third downs while the defense let Ohio State move the chains on nine of 14 attempts.

Next: November 23 at home against 4-5 Nebraska.

Virginia (7-3, 5-2 ACC) moved within one victory of a first-ever Coastal Division crown, but as has been the case this fall it wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. The 33-28 win over Georgia Tech saw the previously hapless Yellow Jackets lead for most of the first half before Bryce Perkins donned his Superman’s cape yet again and led the Cavaliers to victory. All that stands between UVa and the ACC Championship Game is Virginia Tech. How have they fared against the Hokies lately?

UVA hangs on to win, retains control of ACC Coastal (247sports.com; Oakes)

The Virginia Cavaliers needed to defeat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday to continue controlling their own ACC Coastal destiny.

Mission accomplished … But it was no easy feat.
After winning the toss, UVA deferred to the second half, electing to start on defense. They weren’t on defense long. Georgia Tech’s James Graham hit Ahmarean Brown for a 59-yard touchdown, putting the Jackets ahead 7-0 with 13:19 left in the first quarter. It was the longest offensive play from scrimmage for the Jackets so far this season.

Virginia responded with a nine-play, 76-yard drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Wayne Taulapapa, his tenth rushing touchdown of the season, tying the game at 7-7 with 8:39 left in the first quarter.
Georgia Tech answered right back with a James Graham five-yard rushing touchdown to put the Jackets back on top with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

After UVA’s offense went three and out, Joey Blount intercepted Graham and returned it 37-yards to the Georgia Tech 28-yard line. Bryce Perkins hit Joe Reed for a nine-yard touchdown three plays later to tie the game at 14 with 1:50 left in the opening quarter.

The Virginia defense forced a three-and-out on the next Jackets’ possession. UVA took its first lead of the day on the ensuing possession which ended with a 24-yard Brian Delaney field goal to put the Wahoos ahead 17-14 with 10:36 left in the first half.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: After Week 11. Explaining What Will Happen (CFN; Staff)

The CollegeFootballNews.com bowl projections, picks and predictions for the College Football Playoff after Week 11.

Here’s the rationale for all of this …

1) There aren’t going to be a slew of at-large teams available. The projection is that the Pac-12 won’t be able to fill a slew of its bids, and there won’t be a whole lot of other big options. The bowls are going to try to get in with their matchups FAST – it’s going to be a feeding frenzy, because …
2) The American Athletic Conference matchups are going to be awful. They’re going to be way overseeded in bowl after bowl if the league doesn’t get its champion into the New Year’s Six.
3) Let’s go … the College Football Playoff. Here’s the call. LSU, Ohio State and Clemson all win out and go 13-0. Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State – but wins the Big 12 Championship at 11-2. Alabama will beat Auburn, and in the committee room, the debate will be between a Pac-12 champion that either lost to USC (Utah) or to Auburn (Oregon) or an 11-1 Alabama whose only loss will be to LSU.

Much to the anger and chagrin of a weary public, the real call is that there will somehow be three obvious choices and two Power Five champs with more than one loss … and the door will be open for Alabama to get yet another chance. Think 2017 – and 2011 BCS season – when it comes to what happens when this program gets its shot.
As the line goes, we can’t change the future. We can only see it.

College football bowl projections: LSU chooses Peach Bowl, Alabama to Sugar Bowl (fansided.com; Buhler)

Week 11 of the 2019 NCAA season is in the books. Here are what the New Year’s Six bowl projections look like heading into the third week of November.

As we are in the last month of the 2019 college football regular season, we have enough evidence to make some solid bowl game projections. While there are so many bowls to watch this holiday season, we really only care about the New Year’s Six. In addition to making the College Football Playoff, making the other four New Year’s Six games is a huge accomplishment for any program.

At this time, there are roughly 10 teams that have a realistic to a semi-realistic shot of making the College Football Playoff. Outside of those 10 teams, there are a handful more than are in the mix to earn an invitation to a New Year’s Six bowl game.

This year, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl will act as the two national semifinal games of the 2020 College Football Playoff. The other four games (Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, Capital One Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl presented by Northwestern Mutual, Allstate Sugar Bowl) could have any number of teams playing in them, outside of some conference tie-ins.

So through 11 weeks of the NCAA season, here is what we project as the 12 teams taking part in these most meaningful of bowl games this year. Who will represent the Group of 5, how many SEC teams will make this dozen and who on planet earth will represent the ACC in the Capital One Orange Bowl? Let’s find that out now.

College Football Playoff
Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA, Saturday, Dec. 28)
No. 1 LSU Tigers (13-0) vs. No. 4 Oregon Ducks (12-1)

The projected top seed in the 2020 College Football Playoff will be the undefeated SEC Champion LSU Tigers. With their choice of which national semifinal to play in, they’ll make the trek to Atlanta to face the one-loss Pac-12 Champion Oregon Ducks.

Recruits react to Clemson winning fifth straight ACC Atlantic Division title (clemsoninsider.com; Oliver)

for gbo

Clemson clinched the ACC Atlantic Division title with its 55-10 win over NC State on Saturday night at Carter-Finley Stadium and will play the Coastal Division champion in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The Tigers will become the first ACC team to represent a division in five consecutive ACC Championship Games. It marked Clemson’s eighth overall division title, including a co-championship in 2012 in which the Tigers did not appear in the ACC title game.

After the Tigers’ victory over the Wolfpack, The Clemson Insider reached out to a number of Clemson commitments and recruits for their reactions to Dabo Swinney’s program winning the ACC Atlantic Division title again. Check out what they had to say:

Clemson commit Sergio Allen, 2020 LB, Fort Valley, Ga. (Peach County): “Just goes to show we’re doing something right!! We’re coming for that Natty!”

Clemson commit Sage Ennis, 2020 TE, Tallahassee, Fla. (Lincoln): “Man it was a great game for Clemson! Played very well the whole entire game and got a big win! Clinched the division and now I’m sure they have their eyes on next week’s game.”

Clemson commit Walker Parks, 2020 OL, Lexington, Ky. (Frederick Douglass): “Awesome as always. Dominant team right there that is no doubt in the top 4. Putting Penn State over them was a mistake.”

Who helped by Losing - 11/10/19 (RX; HM)

Who helped by Losing - 11/10/19

This might be one of the freudiest installments of Schadenfreude I can remember in a long time...

Who Helped the ACC by losing?
#3 Alabama lost at home to #2 LSU 41-46 in a game where the Tide trailed by 20 at halftime and by 12 with 1:37 left to play.
Why helpful: should move Clemson into the top 4.

#4 Penn State lost on the road to #17 Minnesota, 26-31.
Why helpful: hopes for a 2nd Big Ten playoff team takes a serious blow. Besides, PSU recruits a lot of the same players that many ACC schools recruit, so any loss by the Nittany Lions is a good thing!

#18 Iowa fell to 6-3 by losing at #13 Wisconsin, 22-24. (The Hawkeyes now have the same record as the Virginia Tech Hokies, by the way).

#16 Kansas State also fell to 6-3 after a 24-27 loss to Texas in Austin.
Why helpful: third losses by Iowa and Kansas State may crack the door just a little for Virginia Tech to get some votes (if not move into the bottom of the top 25).

The Emperor has no clothes...
The self-declared best conference in college football suffered two more ignominious losses today as...
...Arkansas lost at home to Western Kentucky 19-45
...and South Carolina suffered the same fate at the hands of Appalachian State, 15-20
(at least the Gamecocks kept it close).

Unbeaten/Bowl Trackers - 11/11/19

We're getting close enough to the end of the regular season to make it worthwhile to bring back the trackers...
Unbeaten Tracker:
Undefeated Teams remaining (5):

Clemson (ACC), Baylor (Big XII), Ohio State (Big Ten), Minnesota (Big Ten), LSU (SEC)

Comment: The Big Ten Championship Game looks like it will pit two undefeated teams against each other in a situation where the winner is virtually guaranteed a playoff spot and the loser - particularly if it's Ohio State - still has a shot, too.

Bowl Tracker:
Already Bowl-eligible (5):
Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia, Pitt, Miami

Comment: At 10-0 and having clinched the Atlantic Division title, Clemson is not only bowl-eligible but is virtually guaranteed a New Year's Six bowl at this point.

Needs one more win (4):
Florida State, Louisville, Boston College, Virginia Tech

Comment: FSU is a virtual lock to get their 6th win. Louisville has 3 games remaining and could conceivably win out. VT also has 3 games left, but the Hokies are shooting for a sweep and a trip to Charlotte for the ACC CG. BC has only 2 more games - Notre Dame and Pitt - it will be tough getting to 6 wins now.

Needs two more wins (3):
NC State, UNC, Duke

Comment: of these three, UNC has the best chance of getting 2 more victories, IMO.

Already Eliminated (1):
Georgia Tech

One loss from elimination (1):
Syracuse

Winter storm warning issued in Upstate NY for heavy snow, icy roads Coin)

A messy winter storm is expected to hit Upstate New York today, and roads could be slippery into the Tuesday morning commute.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the winter storm watch for much of Upstate New York into a warning.
The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

“Total snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze,” are expected, the warning said. “Widespread accumulating snow and ice will create dangerous travel conditions.”

Heavy snowfall in Upstate New York

Heavy snow is expected to fall in Upstate New York today and Tuesday morning.

The line between rain and snow will be very sharp, with the Binghamton expected to get about 3 inches while Syracuse could get 9 inches.

Snow is expected to start this morning and continue through early Tuesday morning, with areas downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario getting lake effect snow throughout the day Tuesday and even into Wednesday. That includes Buffalo, Syracuse and Watertown.

This season’s a success if we get to 6 wins.
