Welcome to Humane Society Anniversary Day!
Founded in 1954, the Humane Society of the United States fights the big fights to end suffering for all animals, not just dogs and cats. We work to stop large-scale cruelties such as animal fighting, puppy mills, factory farming and the wildlife trade. Along with our supporters and volunteers, we work to pass anti-cruelty laws, end the extreme confinement of farm animals in cages, stop cosmetics testing on animals, halt cruelty to wildlife and bring veterinary services to pets in underserved communities. Along with our affiliates, we care for more than 100,000 animals each year through our rescue teams, sanctuaries and wildlife centers. To learn how we put your dollars to work, take a look at our annual reports and financial statements.

Louisville 38, Syracuse 30
Last week’s win over Duke was all about the defense. This week, it’s on Tommy DeVito and the Orange offense to step up. A glance at Louisville’s schedule says you better be ready to score in bunches if you are going to win. Louisville’s defense ranks 103rd in the country in scoring defense, allowing 32 points per game, so the opportunity is there for DeVito to have a standout game and lead Syracuse to a shootout win. I think he’ll come up a couple plays short of that, stopping Syracuse’s quest for a bowl game cold in the Bluegrass State.
STEPHEN BAILEY
Louisville 35, Syracuse 34
The Orange’s revamped defense faces a different challenge this weekend as Louisville’s team speed can turn a slight miscalculation in leverage into a touchdown on any play. On the other side of the ball, if SU’s offensive line can build on its best performance of the year at Duke, there should be consistent scoring opportunities. I’ll give the edge to the home team, but this one could come down to the wire.

Syracuse opponent preview: What to know about Louisville (DO; Black)
After snapping its four-game losing streak by defeating Duke in dominant fashion last week, Syracuse (4-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast) travels to Cardinal Stadium on Saturday to play Louisville (6-4, 4-3). Should the Orange take down the Cardinals and keep their bowl eligibility alive, it’ll be their first back-to-back road wins since the end of the 2012 season. Louisville enters Saturday’s game having won four of its last six games, including most recently a 34-20 win last week over North Carolina State.
Here’s a look at Louisville before it kicks off with Syracuse.
All-time series: Louisville leads, 10-7
Gambling odds: As of Thursday evening, Louisville is a 9.5-point favorite and the over/under is 63.
The last time they met: Syracuse used a second quarter in which it outscored Louisville 30-7 to blow out the Cardinals, 54-23, last year in the Carrier Dome. The Orange’s defense forced four turnovers, all coming in the second quarter alone. Their running game carried the offense, totaling 326 yards and 5 touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry. Moe Neal led the way for SU, going for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just eight carries. Eric Dungey added two rushing scores of his own, while Jarveon Howard added 71 yards and a touchdown. It was the last home game of the season for the Orange, who finished the year undefeated in the Carrier Dome.
The Louisville report: The Cardinals have been pretty consistent this year, beating teams clearly worse than them and falling to those that are either better or just as good. They’ve lost to teams like then-No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson as well as ACC foes Miami and Florida State, but have gotten the job done versus conference bottom-feeders Boston College and NC State. Louisville also has a pair of impressive conference wins against Virginia and Wake Forest, who are both 7-3 this season. That’d seem to imply that it will have no problem against the Orange, who are tied for last in the ACC Atlantic division.
The Louisville offense, which ranks in the top 5 of the ACC in both points and yards per game, is bolstered by its strong running game, which features one of the best running back duos in the conference: Javian Hawkins and Hassan Hall. Hawkins, a redshirt freshman, has tallied the third-highest rushing total in the conference this season (1,045 yards) and added six touchdowns. Backfield mate Hall, who ranks third in the country in yards per kickoff return, has complemented Hawkins to the tune of 397 yards and four scores of his own. Quarterback Micale Cunningham is a talented passer and has 14 touchdowns to show for it, but the redshirt sophomore has proven solid on the ground as well with five touchdowns scored with his legs.

What Syracuse football must do to pull off 2nd straight two-score upset at Louisville (podcast) (PS; podcast; Bailey & Whigham)
Syracuse football will need to beat the odds for a second week in a row to keep its bowl hopes alive.
The Orange (4-6, 1-5 ACC) beat Duke 49-6 last Saturday and is a two-score underdog once again going into a matchup at Louisville (4-6, 4-3) this Saturday at 4 p.m. What needs to happen for SU to win again and give the seniors a chance to play for a bowl in the home finale?
Julian Whigham and I break that down in the latest episode of the Syracuse Football Podcast. The Cardinals have an edge in team speed, particularly at the offensive skill positions. But U of L’s aggressive defense has been burned by opponents throughout 2019.
Julian also discusses what it’s like to be a player during social movements like #NotAgainSU and Cameron Teague Robinson, a reporter for the Louisville Courier Journal, stops by to share insight from the other side of the press box.

Louisville (6-4) vs. Syracuse (4-6) Game Preview
Why Louisville Will Win
The Syracuse offensive line continues to be a problem.
It might have been okay against Duke last week, but overall it’s having a nightmare of a time in pass protection and isn’t doing enough for a running game that isn’t consistent.
The Cardinals might not have enough of a pass rush to matter, but this is the game to start gearing it up to be more disruptive.
On the other side, the passing game continues to be among the nation’s most efficient, with Micale Cunningham on fire throwing for close to 12 yards per try overall helped by a huge lot three weeks. Ever since the blowout loss to Clemson, the Cardinals and Cunningham have been able to bomb away.
Louisville is able to throw like Syracuse is supposed to, and can’t.
Why Syracuse Will Win
Yeah, the Syracuse offensive line is lousy. Louisville’s is every bit as bad, if not worse in some ways.
It’s not as bad in pass protection as Syracuse’s is, but it gives up way too many plays behind the line – it’s last in the nation in tackles for loss allowed – and the Orange have the ability to crank up the pressure and make big things happen in the backfield.
But that hasn’t mattered too much so far – the defense still gives up way too many points. The key will be the offensive side that finally seemed to find something on the ground, ripping up Duke for 286 yards and four scores.
The Cardinal run defense isn’t bad, but it’s not a brick wall against anyone who can get into a groove. The D has improved, but it allowed more than 200 rushing yards four times this year – and 197 to Miami.
Syracuse is 2-0 when hitting the 200-yard mark, and is 9-0 over the last two years when it gets there. But …

Orange fight for bowl eligibility on the road against the Cardinals
Bowl eligibility is still attainable for the Syracuse Orange if they can close out the season with two wins, including one on the road Saturday against the Louisville Cardinals.
These two teams have played nothing but blowouts as of late in this series. The Orange won 54-23 at home last year to stop a four-game win streak by UL. The Cardinals took the 2016 and '17 meetings by a combined score of 118-38 thanks to Lamar Jackson's nine touchdowns.
The 2019 Syracuse team is no longer winless in the ACC after they beat Duke 49-6 last week on the road. The Orange (4-6, 1-5 ACC) outscored the Blue Devils 35-0 in the second half and finally looked like the team we thought they would when the season began. The squad got 115 rushing yards from both Moe Neal and Jarveon Howard, as they bulldozed the Duke defensive line. Cuse's defensive line was strong as well, and part of that was the season debut of McKinley Williams, who was supposed to make a huge impact but had been out with a lower-body injury.
Louisville (6-4, 4-3) is bowl eligible after beating NC State 34-20 last week. Micale Cunningham threw for four touchdowns, as the team somewhat broke away from their run-heavy tendencies. Chatarius Atwell had five receptions for 110 yards in the victory, while Marshon Ford picked up two touchdown catches. The team even had their kicker get into the fun with a seven-yard touchdown pass. It was their second road win of the season.

When Syracuse Has the Ball
For one week, everything seemed to work for the Orange on offense. It all begins with the failures up front in the offensive line. The unit has allowed Tommy DeVito to be sacked 42 times and hurried countless other times. The sophomore signal-caller has completed 62.9 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns to just five interceptions. Early injuries to the group up front has led to some of this collapse. Moe Neal, Abdul Adams, and Jarveon Howard are the main threats out of the backfield, while Trishton Jackson and Taj Harris are the best wide receivers. Jackson has nine touchdown receptions.

Louisville football: Previewing Syracuse with Inside The Loud House (BRL; Lane)
Louisville football will finish their home slate this weekend when Syracuse comes to Cardinal Stadium for Senior Day. We preview the matchup with the Orange with Paul Esden Jr. of Inside The Loud House.
It’s hard to believe that Senior Day is already here in the inaugural season of Scott Satterfield as head coach of the Louisville football program, but here we are.
Louisville football comes off of a big come from behind win against North Carolina State, where they absolutely dominated in the second half on their way to the sixth win of the season – officially making the Cards bowl eligible.
Now the Cards will look to further enhance their postseason resume when they go up against Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. Getting to six wins is a huge feat in itself for this Louisville football team, but with two more games this season there is still an opportunity to get to 8 wins, something no one thought was possible.
If Louisville is going to do that they’ll first have to go through Syracuse, a team that was projected to finish where the Cards currently sit in the ACC Standings in the preseason. After a 9-3 finish to the 2018 season that included a 34-18 win over no. 16 ranked West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl, the Orange looked primed for another big run in the ACC.
At 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the ACC, the season has been a huge disappointment for a team that started the year with so much promise. Veteran backup Tommy Devito stepped into the starting role full time at quarterback this year after the graduation of Syracuse legend, Eric Dungey, a player responsible for a lot of the success for the Orange the last few seasons.
While Devito has played well for Dino Babers throwing for 2,180 yards, 17 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, he’s not given Syracuse the big-play threat that they were so used to having in Dungey. It doesn’t help that his offensive line has struggled to stay healthy all season while the defense hasn’t been able to stop much of anyone.

Louisville football: 3 things to watch for Cards vs. Syracuse (BRL; Reddington)
Louisville football will finish their home schedule this weekend as they host the struggling Syracuse Orange for Senior Day. Here’s how Louisville gets the job done.
Louisville football’s revenge tour continues this Saturday against the Syracuse Orange. So far in 2019, Louisville has defeated four opponents that beat them by 18 or more last season in Wake Forest, Boston College, Virginia and NC State. Syracuse is up next.
Going into 2018, Syracuse had not appeared in a bowl game since 2013. The Orange turned it around and finished with their highest win total since 2001 with 10, finishing the season ranked 15th in the country.
This year, things have been different. Syracuse started the season ranked 22nd in the AP poll but through ten games, they’ve only been able to win four games which includes only one win against a power five team. that came last week against Duke in a game that they won 49-6 in their most impressive outing of the season.
But this opened the door for a miraculous Syracuse turn around. If they are able to win in Louisville this weekend and then are able to go on and beat Wake Forest, they will become bowl eligible after starting 4-6.
Syracuse pummeled Louisville last year, beating them 54-23 in the Carrier Dome. But this season, the teams find their roles reversed as to what they were last year. Louisville is looking to build off of what is already a stellar campaign and Syracuse is just looking to stay afloat.
But if last weekend is any indication of what to expect from the Orange, they won’t be throwing in the towel. Duke was a 10 point favorite at home last weekend and Syracuse handled them easily for a full 60 minutes.
Louisville also goes into this matchup as a 10 point home favorite against the Orange (courtesy of the Action Network). Here’s what they’ll need to do get to win number seven.Highlights

Syracuse may have country’s best punter-kicker duo (AP; Kekis)
Syracuse has had one constant source of excellence in what has been a down year — the right legs of punter Sterling Hofrichter and kicker Andre Szmyt.
Szmyt, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound redshirt sophomore from the Chicago suburbs, won the Lou Groza Award last season, given annually to the nation’s top kicker, and earned unanimous All-America honors. He finished his breakout first year as just the second Bowl Subdivision kicker to lead the nation in scoring average (12.3 points), converting 30 field goals (one off the national record) in 34 tries and all 61 extra points he attempted on a team that averaged 40 points.
Impressive for a walk-on who five years ago was playing high school soccer, not even on the radar of his school’s football coach. The soft-spoken Szmyt won the Orange job in preseason camp last year.
“I knew once I was listed as the No. 1 on the depth chart that I could continue,” Szmyt said. “Gaining confidence was a big part.”
The heady days of 2018 for Szmyt, who was awarded a scholarship at midseason after kicking three field goals in the rain in an overtime loss at Pitt, have dimmed somewhat this year as the Orange (4-6) have struggled on offense. Scoring is down to 26.6 points per game.
Szmyt is 11 of 14 on field goals, with two of his misses hitting uprights, and he’s also missed one point-after attempt. But in two seasons he remains a perfect 14 of 14 from inside the 40-yard line, and he has converted four attempts from 50 yards and beyond without a miss.
“Last year was ... a real whirlwind,” said Szmyt’s father, Eric. “A lot of it was like validation of our thinking about how talented he was because he had just played the one year in high school. He didn’t have a whole lot of exposure. We knew what his potential was, but it was hard to know whether or not that would translate. To go from not just winning the position but to winning the Lou Groza was incredible.”

Syracuse Football: Louisville poses daunting challenge for Orange (itlh; Esden Jr)
Syracuse football has a huge test vs Louisville on Saturday. Here’s an inside look at what challenges they’ll present and how the Orange will try to win.
Syracuse football fans are feeling good for the first time in over a month. On one hand, the team has lost four out of its last five games which is terrible. While on the other side of the coin, Syracuse at 4-6 still has a chance with two games remaining at a bowl berth, albeit a small chance.
Although their next opponent has already reached bowl eligibility. The Louisville Cardinals are 6-4 with two games to go and they’re looking to pad the resume ahead of bowl season. Last year this program was in shambles with Bobby Petrino and now they have new signs of life under former Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield.
Syracuse is a huge underdog on the road according to all the metrics:
- Per ESPN FPI Analytics: the Orange have a 33.1 percent chance at victory.
- While the latest vegas line has the Cardinals as a nine-point favorite at home.

Georgia Tech Football: Jackets hold off NC State in ACC finale (yellowjackedup.com; Cagle)
A strong first half from James Graham and Ahmarean Brown helped propel Georgia Tech Football to victory in their final game of ACC play against the NC State Wolfpack on Thursday night.
After taking a 21-3 lead in Thursday night’s game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets held off a second half push from the Wolfpack to hold on for a 28-26 victory.
The Jackets offense set the tempo early in the game and it all started when quarterback James Graham and the Jackets set the tempo early taking a massive shot down the field on the first play of the game for 54 yards to Malachi Carter and culminating in Ahmarean Brown catching his first touchdown pass of the night.
It was a strong first drive for the Yellow Jackets and the beginning of a quality night for Graham. Despite completing just 7-of-15 passing attempts, Graham passed for 129-yards and three touchdowns. It’s not flashy numbers by any means but it was a much better result than last week’s performance against Virginia Tech. Add in Graham’s 112-yards on the ground and he put together possibly his best performance of the season.
Graham wasn’t the only Jacket to have a great night offensively as Jordan Mason got back into his groove and rushed for 141-yards against the Wolfpack on 22 carries.
The defense also showed up in a big way early stopping the Wolfpack early on 4th and 2 in a prime scoring position. The Jackets would use a muffed punt just before halftime to bring together James Graham and Ahmarean Brown for an 11-yard connection on a perfect pass for his second touchdown of the night. That touchdown was also his 7th receiving score of the year and tied the freshman scoring record set by Calvin Johnson. He’ll have the opportunity to break the record next week against Georgia.

Virginia Tech football: Hokies pick up another commitment on Thursday evening (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
for Hokie Mark
The Virginia Tech Hokies picked up a commitment on Thursday night from 2020 three-star offensive lineman Parker Clements. Clements, a 6’7”, 270-pound offensive tackle from Lugoff-Elgin High School in Lugoff, S.C., chose the Hokies over offers from N.C. State, Louisville, Kansas State, Appalachian State and East Carolina.
Unbelievably excited to announce my commitment to Virginia Tech #GoHokies #HokieNation #ThisIsHome #Hokies #LetsGoHokies @VanceVice @CoachFuente
— Parker Clements (@ParkerClements0) November 21, 2019
Before you look at his offer list and think the Hokies could’ve done better, that’s probably a mistake. Clements, as a prospect, reminds me a lot of current Hokie redshirt freshman Luke Tenuta.
Tenuta, a member of the class of 2018, chose Tech over offers from North Carolina and West Virginia. Tenuta came to the Hokies with similar size as Clements, standing over 6’7” and weighing around 275 pounds. Most thought Tenuta would be a few years away from seeing the field. Yet, here we are in 2019 and Tenuta is a starter at right tackle. Sure, he began the season as a backup and moved into the starting lineup due to injury, but he played extremely well. Oh, and Tenuta is now 315 pounds.
There’s no doubt offensive line coach Vance Vice sees something similar with Clements. And some of Virginia Tech’s better offensive linemen through the years were unheralded coming out of high school. Clements, like Tenuta, has the perfect frame to come in and spent a couple of years in the weight room without having the need to be on the field early in his career.
In watching some film on Clements, you see the raw power. Like most bigger players at the high school level, it’s hard to get a true read because he is so much larger than the competition. I see a player who plays too high in his stance but that is not a concern. Most high school offensive linemen deal with the same issue, especially those with Clements’ size.

ACC Football Coach Has A Message For ESPN (thespun.com; Hladlik)
ACC football has been the subject of derision for much of this season and Pat Narduzzi is sick and damn tired of it.
Narduzzi delivered a sharp message today to ESPN and others who criticize the league for its lack of balance and overall mediocrity. He even called out the Big Ten in the process.
Narduzzi urged those at ESPN to “wake up.”
Pat Narduzzi w/ this when asked about the ACC big picture:
“The people at ESPN, they need to wake up. You look at all the conferences, you can pick on one because Clemson’s been so dominant. But Ohio State’s been pretty dominant in the Big Ten. Who else is there right now?”
— John McGonigal (@jmcgonigal9) November 21, 2019
It is true that Ohio State is the most dominant program in the Big Ten, and has been for a while. However, there is slightly more parity overall in the league.
Assuming Clemson wins the ACC this year, it would be their fifth consecutive title and sixth in nine seasons. The other three were won by Florida State from 2012-14.
If Ohio State wins the Big Ten this season, they will have done so for the third year in a row and the fourth time in that same nine-year span. Wisconsin and Michigan State have two titles apiece and Penn State has one in that time frame.
Have to respect Narduzzi for sticking up for the league though.

What’s the best cranberry sauce to serve at Thanksgiving? We tasted 19 to find out (PS; Pucci & Miller)
Cranberry sauce has long had an oft-overlooked, yet essential, role in the typical Thanksgiving feast. It can vary from a requisite red garnish on an otherwise drab-colored plate to the star of the show.
Regardless, you only want the best on Thanksgiving for you and your guests.
We’re here to help. We taste-tested 19 varieties of cranberry sauce, from chunky relishes to the translucent jellies that slither onto a plate still marked with the can’s ridges that serve as a cutting guide. We sampled a selection of national brands and store brands available in the Syracuse area to find the winner.
Here are the not-so-scientific results:
Extended Family Only
19. Great Value Jellied
Price: $0.94 for 14 ounces (6.7 cents per ounce)
Notes: To be honest, many of the generic cranberry sauces tasted similar, so it seems unfair to rank Walmart’s less-than-a-buck offering at the bottom. But this sauce just wasn’t great. It lacked the tartness we liked in our favorites and overall, tasted flat and bland.
18. Great Value Whole Berry
Price: $0.94 for 14 ounces (6.7 cents per ounce)
Notes: See above. They’re the same product, save for a few pieces of cranberry mixed in. It added just enough texture to bump it over its jellied brethren. It does look prettier though, especially once you take a fork to it to fluff it up.
17. Sweet Harvest Jellied
Price: $0.89 for 14 ounces (6.36 cents per ounce)
Notes: This Aldi offering and its whole berry version were the cheapest of the bunch. It was a little bit more tart than the Great Value, but was still a far cry from fresh fruit.
16. PICS Jellied
Price: $1.25 for 14 ounces (8.92 cents per ounce)
Notes: This Price Chopper brand sauce was almost indistinguishable from the Aldi product. Both were a little grainy.

2. Trader Joe’s Cranberry Sauce (fresh)
Price: $3.49 for 16 ounces (21.8 cents per ounce)
Notes: Another refrigerated sauce, this cranberry sauce was almost entirely whole cranberries. Due to it not being canned or jarred, this sauce tasted the least cooked, which meant it had the best and most pronounced fresh fruit flavor of any of the sauces. The cranberries are so fresh that they pop in your mouth.
1. Williams-Sonoma Jellied Cranberry
Price: $14.95 for 13 ounces ($1.15 per ounce)
Notes: No, that’s not a typo. From the gourmet food store, whose holiday catalog is infamously filled with overly-expensive treats ($19 sprinkles or $20 marshmallows, anyone?) that annually gets ripped apart by Deadspin (RIP), comes this cranberry sauce that costs more per ounce than some of the others did for the entire thing. You could end up paying more for this than the whole darn turkey!
At $15 a jar, this stuff better be good. And guess what? It was. With cranberries and apple sauce making up the base, this gel was silky smooth and rich, with the color of red wine. It’s spiced with cinnamon and clove that were present without being too assertive. A dash of sea salt and black pepper invigorated the flavor. It was almost buttery.
Here’s our final word. If you’re buying cranberries for this Thanksgiving, look at the other finalists in our top 5. But if you’re patient, stop by the store after the holidays when the remaining stock will certainly be on clearance. It lasts a couple years. Stock up for next year and impress your guests all over again.
