Welcome to International Volunteer Day!
International Volunteer Day (IVD), is an opportunity for us all to promote volunteerism, encourage governments to support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, national and international levels.
At UNV, we are marking #IVD2019 with the theme "Volunteer for an inclusive future", highlighting SDG 10 and the pursuit of equality – including inclusion – through volunteerism.
Volunteering provides opportunities for people, particularly those often excluded, to concretely impact their own lives and play a constructive role in their communities by volunteering their time and skills. Through volunteerism, communities around the world often experience strengthened solidarity and inclusion.

SU football report card: position-by-position grades, superlatives (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse football entered the 2019 season with hopes of upsetting Clemson and chasing a spot in the Orange Bowl.
The program exits Year 4 of the Dino Babers era with a 5-7 record, a fired defensive coordinator and more staff changes coming.
Before fully turning the page to what projects as a very busy offseason, The Post-Standard | Syracuse.com is taking one last look back at the season. Here are our position-by-position grades and team superlatives:
Quarterback
Stephen Bailey: B-
Tommy DeVito might’ve been dealt the toughest situation of any Power-Five quarterback this season. The Orange allowed 45 sacks through nine games, leading him to play through multiple injuries with little running game to provide balance until the final quarter of the year. Still, there were issues with early season decision making and year-long chemistry with his receivers. Finding renewed comfort in the pocket will be critical for his growth this offseason.
Nate Mink: B-
If this season taught us anything, it’s that Tommy DeVito can only be as good as his surrounding cast. To that end, DeVito’s numbers landed in the middle of the ACC. He will take a season of learning with him in 2020, along with an 8-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in league games. A more pressing need is developing or bringing in immediate depth to the quarterback room.

D.O. Sportscast: Beat writers recap Syracuse's disappointing season (DO; sportscast; Staff)
After starting the season in the AP Top 25, the Orange recorded only two Atlantic Coast Conference wins and finished with a 5-7 overall record. Our beat writers recap Syracuse’s disappointing season in the final football edition of The D.O. Sportscast.
The stats that defined each fall Syracuse sports team’s season (DO; Staff)
With all of Syracuse’s fall sports wrapped up, The Daily Orange Sports Staff reviewed each team’s season. No team made it out of the second round of their respective sport’s NCAA tournament, and some teams failed to make the postseason altogether. Still, players like Ryan Raposo shined, and teams like Field Hockey, who beat three top-five teams, enjoyed high-points.
Below are the season-defining statistics for each Syracuse fall team.
50
Syracuse football allowed 50 sacks this year. Only two teams – Old Dominion and Akron – allowed more in the regular season. As SU (5-7, 2-6 Atlantic Coast) slipped further down the conference ranks, the sacks piled up. By the time the Orange lost to Florida State on Oct. 26, Syracuse had allowed seven or more sacks in three-straight games against Power 5 opponents and 37 total.
The Orange’s protection of the quarterback improved in the final four games of the season, leading to two Syracuse wins. Part of the success came following a lineup switch when Carlos Vettorello and Airon Servais rotated spots, putting Servais at left tackle and Vettorello at center. Following that switch, SU’s quarterbacks were sacked just five times in three games.
But the early season woes on the offensive line will be what is remembered from Syracuse’s 2019 season because of how much it inhibited the offense. For a large portion of the year, SU couldn’t run the ball. When forced to pass, quarterback Tommy DeVito rarely had time to set his feet before a defender had hands on him.

Syracuse Football: ‘It’d be surprising’ if Steve Stanard retains DC gig (itlh; Esden Jr)
‘It’d be surprising’ if Steve Stanard is retained as the permanent Syracuse football DC. Here’s who said that and what it all means.
Syracuse football will be making a ton of tough decisions this offseason and one of their biggest is the future of the defensive coordinator position.
With three games to go in 2019, Dino Babers fired Brian Ward and promoted Steve Stanard to interim DC.
Syracuse finished 2-1 in that stretch and had their fair share of ups and downs on the defensive side of the ball.
Syracuse football beat reporter Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com joined Boy Green on The Score 1260 on Wednesday and provided the details on whether or not he’ll be retained:
“I would be surprised if he was retained as the full-time defensive coordinator. Although I could see a situation where he’s the linebackers or defensive line coach in 2020. In the last three games, he did show some things to Dino Babers. How Steve recruits in the Carolinas could be deemed an asset. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hung around but I’d be very surprised if he was the defensive coordinator.”

The College Football Playoff rankings came out on Tuesday. The ACC had two teams in the top 25.
That moved the ACC bowl picture one step closer to being clearer.
Sorta. Kinda.
It’s always complicated when it comes to the ACC bowl selection process. How it looks after the penultimate CFP rankings were unveiled and heading into Saturday’s conference championship game between Clemson (12-0) and Virginia in Charlotte:

Clemson Football: Travis Etienne deservedly wins ACC Player of the Year (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)
for gbo
Clemson football running back Travis Etienne was announced as the ACC Player of the Year for a second-straight season Wednesday morning.
The ACC announced Wednesday morning that two Clemson football players were named as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year for the conference.
RB Travis Etienne was named the conference’s overall player of the year and the offensive player of the year. Clemson football LB Isaiah Simmons was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Both Etienne and Simmons were deserving of their honors and, ultimately, Etienne finished just a little ahead in the voting due to his explosive ability, impressive statistics and record-breaking season.
For the season, Etienne has rushed 168 times for 1,386 yards (8.3 YPC) and 16 touchdowns. That impressive 8.3 yards per carry mark leads the nation and proves just how efficient the running back has been during this season.
In addition to having a solid junior season, Etienne also broke the ACC career record for total touchdowns and rushing touchdowns.
Though Etienne has played just three seasons with Clemson football, he is currently ranked No. 3 on the Tigers’ all-time career rushing board (3,810 yards). He surpassed CJ Spiller a few weeks ago and is now just behind James Davis (3,881 yards) and Raymond Priester (3,966 yards). For those of you counting along, that means the running back is just 72 yards away from passing Davis and 157 yards away from holding the record.

What is the Value of a CCG in 2019?
Way back at the beginning of this year (2019), the Fox Sports TV network walked away from an option to carry 3 years' worth of Big XII Football Championship Games. The issue was over money, of course:
source: https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2019/01/14/Media/Big-12.aspxThe Big 12 had hoped that Fox, one of its two primary media partners, would pick up the rights to the championship games in the odd-numbered years. Fox carried the 2017 game as part of a mediated settlement around conference expansion, paying about $25 million for its rights. But the network and the conference could not come to terms on the other three available games. Sources said the last offer made to Fox valued the game in the high teens. The conference is trying to get at least $20 million for the game, sources said.
Apparently the Big XII wanted $20M for those rights, Fox offered something "in the high teens", they couldn't reach an agreement, so the rights went on the open market, where ESPN ultimately purchased them as part of a package deal:
This deal also included 3rd tier rights from 8 of the 10 Big XII schools and, in fact, represents all remaining T3 rights for those 8 schools:In the new deal, which includes three championship games and ESPN+ rights, ESPN will pay a total of around $40M... ABC or ESPN carry every [Big XII] football championship game through ’24 [namely 2019, 2021 and 2023] and will launch a Big 12-branded area on ESPN+.
source: https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2019/04/10/ESPN-Big-12.aspxEight of the 10 schools will provide more than 50 exclusive events per year, including at least one football game, any spring football game and any basketball game that is not on an ESPN linear network. https://www.syracuse.com/best-of-cn...chicken-sandwich-and-its-unanimous-video.html (PS; Miller)
The first-ever fried chicken sandwich from Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen was so popular when it hit restaurants Aug. 12 that hungry people waited hours in line to get one. Fifteen days later, Popeyes sold out.
The Popeyes drought ended last month when the world’s most famous chicken sandwich returned. And that marked the start of the chicken sandwich challenge.
People all over began pitting the Popeyes sandwich against the so-called original from its competitor, Chick-fil-A. They’d buy a sandwich from each and do a blind taste-test to see which one was the best. Many posted their challenges on YouTube.
Both of these sandwiches are fried breaded chicken breasts. Both have two pickle slices. Both are on buttery, toasty buns. They’re similar in price: Popeyes is $3.99; Chick-fil-A is $4.29. So how could one be so much better than the other?
