Welcome to Green Monday!

Green Monday is an online shopping day similar to Cyber Monday, and it occurs on the last Monday when there are at least ten days prior to Christmas, which usually happens to be the second Monday in December. Online shoppers have historically wanted ten days between when they order gifts and Christmas, to ensure the gifts arrive in time. The day is like an online version of Super Saturday, where shoppers realize there isn't much time left to look for items, and that they must buy. As many retailers now offer guaranteed two-day shipping, the importance of getting all online shopping done by Green Monday has lessened. eBay came up with the name for the day, which has been in use since at least 2007. They called it Green Monday because of the extra revenue that the day brought in, and because online shopping may be more environmentally friendly than shopping at brick-and-mortar stores. It has become the largest shopping day in December, and in 2016 there were $1.6 billion in sales.
Green Monday is being observed today! It has always been observed the Monday before December 15th.

Syracuse Football: Top 5 most impactful 2020 Orange recruits (itlh; Peckham)

Syracuse football is going to need some help if they’re going to turn things around. Here are the top 5 impactful 2020 recruits to watch out for.
The Syracuse football team won’t be getting any five-star recruits or top-rated players in their incoming class but they recruited guys who have the potential to be dominant players in a couple of years.
This could be one of Dino Babers’ best classes when it’s all said and done with the versatility of the incoming players. The 2020 class will have an opportunity to see the field during their freshman season and possibly contribute which would be a huge step forward to their development and how this class as a whole turns out in the end.

With that being said here are the top 5 2020 recruits that could have the biggest impact.
Latarie Kinsler Jr: No. 45 DE (ESPN Rankings)

Latarie Kinsler is the top recruit for the Syracuse football team next season. Latarie is going to have a major role on the defense with the Orange’s top two edge rushers and arguably one of the top tandems in college football leaving for the National Football League in Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman.
Syracuse has done a tremendous job over the past decade in recruiting edge rushers and developing them into stars before they head towards the NFL. With the losses of Coleman and Robinson, the Orange are going to need some new edge rushers to match the production of their two studs although Syracuse will have their two defensive tackles returning in Joshua Black and McKinley Williams.
Latarie can play multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball which include defensive end, outside linebacker, and inside linebacker. Kinsler has the rare combination of speed and athleticism. If the Orange strength and conditioning program can beef him up, he could be a special talent.

Garth Barclay: No. 83 OT (ESPN Rankings)
Garth is the highest-rated offensive lineman that Syracuse will be bringing in next season. After an up and down season from the offensive line who seemed to struggle mightily in pass protection, the Orange could use a boost.

Syracuse will be losing just one starter on the offensive line (Evan Adams), which means opportunity is in the air. Although the Orange could look to shake things up because last year’s offensive line wasn’t exactly perfect.

Garth is coming in at 6-foot-7 250 lbs and will most likely add more strength when he arrives on campus. Tommy DeVito was sacked 44 times this season and Clayton Welch was also sacked 5 times this season which isn’t going to cut it for a Syracuse offense.
Syracuse will be looking for an offensive lineman who can run block as well as pass protect as their key to success starts with the running game. Garth is going to get better once he arrives on campus as he will get bigger, stronger, quicker, and more technically sound as a blocker working with college coaches and having access to the weight room whenever he needs.

Clemson’s Return to College Football Playoff Headlines ACC Bowl Lineup (theacc.com)

Defending national champion Clemson’s return to the College Football Playoff for the fifth consecutive year highlighted a Sunday in which the Atlantic Coast Conference landed a nation-leading 10 bowl bids.

The five-time ACC Champion Tigers (13-0) are No. 3 in the CFP Top 25 poll and will face No. 2 Ohio State (13-0) in the CFP Semifinal at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28.

If the Tigers advance past the Buckeyes, they will face No. 1 LSU (13-0) or No. 4 Oklahoma (12-1) for the CFP National Championship at 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, in New Orleans.

Clemson is bidding for the program’s fourth national football championship and the fourth by an ACC team in the last seven seasons.

Both CFP semifinals and the national championship game will be carried live by ESPN.

Clemson’s five overall CFP selections tie Alabama for the most of any school in the six-year history of the Playoff’s existence. The ACC has placed a team in the Playoff in each of those six years. The Tigers earned the No. 1 seed in 2015 and in 2017, and were the No. 2 seed in 2016 and 2018. Florida State was seeded No. 3 as the conference champion in 2014.

Clemson and Ohio State also met in the Fiesta Bowl as part of the 2016 CFP Semifinal, where the No. 2 Tigers blanked the No. 3 Buckeyes 31-0.

The ACC is one of just two conferences that has placed a team in the CFP or the BCS Championship in each of the last seven years.

Since 2013, the ACC is second among all conferences with 75 postseason appearances in addition to leading in national championships with three.

Sunday also saw ACC Coastal Division Champion Virginia (9-4) accept an invitation to play Florida in the 2019 Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. That game is scheduled to kick off on Monday, Dec. 30, at 8 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN.

The game will mark No. 24 Virginia’s first appearance in the Orange Bowl and first in any “New Year’s Six” game. It will be UVA’s 21st overall bowl appearance and third consecutive under fourth-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall. No. 9 Florida is 10-2 and finished second in the SEC’s East Division.

Virginia Tech (8-4), which received a bid to the Belk Bowl, will be appearing in a bowl game for the 27th consecutive year, extending the longest active streak in college football.

Boston College (6-6), Florida State (6-6) Louisville (7-5), Miami (6-6), North Carolina (6-6), Pitt (7-5) and Wake Forest (8-4) are also bound for bowl games.

Over the last four years, the ACC has placed 42 teams in bowl games, tying for the best among all conferences. For the 19th consecutive season, the ACC has earned at least six bowl bids. The ACC ranks second among all conferences with 137 bowl appearances since 2005.

Boston College is headed to the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl and will face No. 21 Cincinnati (10-3). The game is set for Thursday, Jan. 2, at 3 p.m., at historic Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Eagles are 14-12 all-time in bowl games. Last season’s First Responder Bowl in Dallas was cancelled due to inclement weather in the first quarter with BC leading No. 23 Boise State 7-0.

It has been two years since North Carolina has been to a bowl game.

In the first season of Mack Brown’s return to UNC, the Tar Heels will face Temple (8-4) in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Md. on Dec. 27.

The Tar Heels went 6-6 under Brown after a 5-18 two-year lull, and are in a bowl game for the fifth time in seven years.

Virginia Tech (8-4) will take the ACC’s spot in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 31 and face Kentucky (7-5).

This Clemson-Ohio State Fiesta Bowl won't be 31-0 (independentmail.com; Robinson)

for gbo

“O-H…31-O”

The last time Clemson and Ohio State met in the Fiesta Bowl, the Buckeyes left with no points and a remixed version of their infamous call and response chant.

Clemson demolished Ohio State 31-0 in Arizona in a 2016 College Football Playoff semifinal. The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage and embarrassed the Buckeyes.

And Clemson fans reminded them about it— repeatedly. Even the Clemson Band trolled Ohio State in the subsequent season, marching to form 31-0 during a performance in Death Valley.

Ohio State can avenge that loss on Dec. 28 when it faces Clemson again in the Fiesta Bowl CFP semifinal.
It is the same stadium. It is the same situation. But it will not be the same result. Or at least not the same lopsided score.

Ohio State has different coaches and different players. It runs a different offense that will produce different yields.

Less than 24 hours after the Virginia football team absorbed its most lopsided loss of the season in the ACC championship game, the mood among Cavaliers players and coaches grew considerably more upbeat when they learned they would be playing in the Orange Bowl for the first time.

Orange Bowl officials made the announcement Sunday, a few hours after the unveiling of the four teams selected to participate in the College Football Playoff. One of those teams, No. 3 Clemson, trounced the Cavaliers, 62-17, on Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, but soon after the final whistle, Orange Bowl representatives spoke with Virginia Coach Bronco Mendenhall outside the team’s locker room.

For the second time in program history, the Louisville football team is heading to the Music City Bowl.
After a surprise turnaround, the Cardinals, who won just two games a year ago, finished second in the ACC’s Atlantic Division and were rewarded with a bid to the Music City Bowl. Louisville (7-5, 5-3 ACC) will face SEC opponent Mississippi State (6-6, 3-5 SEC) in the Dec. 30 game at Nissan Stadium, in Nashville, Tennessee. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. and air on ESPN.

"We are really excited," Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said. "You get 15 extra practices, roughly, to work with our guys again. We are excited to get back to work."

Mississippi State leads the series 3-2 overall. The two teams will meet for the second time in the last three years. Mississippi State defeated Louisville 31-27 in the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl. That was the last time Louisville played in a bowl game. It missed out on the postseason last year, for the first time since the 2009 season.

The verdict on Boston College Football’s bowl destination is in, and it’s pretty much what the prognosticators had been expecting over the past week. The Eagles will be headed to the Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, AL on January 2nd at 3pm ET/2pm CT for game number 13 with a chance to once again finish with seven wins. The news is per Brett McMurphy:

Cincinnati will compete in the @Birmingham_Bowl against Boston College on January 2nd, 2020, at 3PM ET on @ESPN.
— Cincinnati Football (@GoBearcatsFB) December 8, 2019
The Eagles will face off against #21 Cincinnati team of the American Athletic Conference on ESPN. The Bearcats were just 25 yards from making it to the Cotton Bowl, had they taken down Memphis in the AAC Championship Game, but still enter the postseason ranked despite the loss. Cincinnati comes in with a 10-3 record, with one loss to #1 Ohio State and two losses to #17 Memphis.
Obviously at 6-6 the Eagles are just happy to be going anywhere, but this is a halfway decent destination. The weather in Birmingham will be decent -- certainly warmer than Detroit. And hey, it's a January bowl, technically??

Most watchable non-New Year's Six Bowl match-ups: Even if I weren't a Hokie fan, I think I'd be interested in Virginia Tech vs. Kentucky in the Belk Bowl. The teams combined for 15 wins (VT 8-4, UK 7-5) and are close enough geographically to have some interest in playing each other. I also like Wake Forest vs. Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl, as well as Florida State vs. Arizona State in the "Tony the Tiger" Sun Bowl.

Worst bowl matchups: While I'm not overly excited about the Quick Lane (Pitt vs. EMU) or the Independence (Miami vs. LA Tech) Bowls, this year has to be one of the least-interesting Camping World Bowl matchups I can remember. What does Iowa State have in common with Notre Dame?

Toughest Draws, besides the Orange Bowl: Boston College will face the second-best team from the American Athletic Conference (Cincinnati) in the Birmingham Bowl. Also, while I don't consider Mississippi State to be a juggernaut by any means, I do think it's a challenge for a still-rebuilding team like Louisville. As for the rest of the ACC, I think one of the biggest challenges is in their heads... some of these teams need to simply get out of their own way.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefoot...ley-dixon-signs-extension-with-ny-giants.html (PS; Owens)

Former Syracuse Orange punter Riley Dixon, having a standout season with the New York Giants, has been rewarded by the NFL team with a three-year contract extension.

The Giants announced the move Sunday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dixon is averaging 47 yards per punt this season, and has placed 20 of his 46 punts inside the 20 yard line.
“I think he’s playing at a Pro Bowl, All-Pro level. It makes our job easier to go cover those punts,” Giants special teams captain Michael Thomas told Big Blue View last week.

Dixon is in his second year with the Giants. He was drafted by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL draft and spent two years in Denver before being traded to the Giants. In 2018, his first season with the Giants, Dixon set a team record with a 41.8-yard net average on 71 punts.

Back when Maryland football’s season showed promise and the hype train quickly gained passengers, coach Mike Locksley pumped the brakes.

In the second game of his tenure as the full-time coach, Locksley’s squad had throttled then-No. 21 Syracuse. The week before, the Terps had demolished Howard. A combined score of 142-20 over two weeks drew eyes from around the country, and the oft-hibernating fan base in College Park began to stir.

But there Locksley was, at the lectern inside the Gossett Football Team House, reminding listeners — and especially those players outside the room, jubilant over a 2-0 start — not to get ahead of themselves.

“There’s all types of things we need to continue to work to improve,” Locksley said Sept. 7 after the 63-20 win over the Orange. “It is hard to get them to understand that every day you have to come to work with the right mindset and maximize it every single day. That’s been the toughest challenge for us. But guess what? We drew the line in the sand and we ain’t backing off of it as a staff. We’re going to get it out of them.”

The proponents of an eventual eight-team College Football Playoff often point to conference championship weekend as the proper place to start remaking the sport's highly scrutinized postseason format.

After all, since the Power Five champions aren't guaranteed a spot in the playoff bracket, then what's the point of staging these games on a Saturday that could easily serve as the beginning of an expanded march to the national championship?

There is plenty to critique, but the CFP selection committee sent a message Sunday that the conference championship games did matter, moving Louisiana State into the No. 1 seed Sunday morning above Ohio State, which appeared to have established itself as the committee's top team in November.

Penny Allyn, a longtime supporter of Syracuse University and the city, died Thursday, Nov. 28, at the age of 81.

Allyn and her husband, Bill, were graduates of SU’s classes of 1960 and 1959, respectively. Allyn served alongside Bill on the board of the Allyn Family Foundation, a private foundation that provides grants to charitable organizations in central New York.

The Allyns donated $2.28 million to the College of Engineering and Computer Science in 2018, which funded the Bill and Penny Allyn Innovation Center at Link Hall. Their gift also funded an Invent@SU invention accelerator program that aimed to provide a platform for students to bring their inventions to life, according to Syracuse University News.

The Invent@SU program is a collaboration between the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Visual and Performing Arts, according to Syracuse University News. The six-week immersive experience teaches students how to design, prototype and pitch original ideas to help them develop their entrepreneurial and inventive skills.

Penny Allyn was heavily involved in local organizations in central New York, including the Central New York Community Foundation, American Red Cross and Planned Parenthood. She was the largest donor for apheresis-style blood giving in Syracuse for many years, according to her obituary.

Penny Allyn was born in Syracuse and attended Nottingham High School before attending SU, according to Syracuse.com. Penny Allyn and her husband married and moved to Portland, Oregon, before returning to Bill’s hometown of Skaneateles in 1963.

is this not a confusing sentance?

The Syracuse football team will be bringing back a majority of their secondary next season with Christopher Fredrick, Evan Foster, Antwan Cordy, and Scoop Bradshaw graduating. Syracuse will have one of their starting safety spots open with the departure of Foster and Cordy.

which is it? majority coming back or losing 2 of the 4 starters and 2 of the key rotation guys?

and this statement

Ben isn’t highly recruited by any major recruiting programs due to him playing at a junior college.

he is coming from canada not a JUCO..

Yes it is confusing.

We played Iffy, Chris and Cordy at CB. A little Scoop and Jones (another senior) too. Trill might have played some CB as well.

We played Trill, Cordy and Stritz at the nickel.

We played Foster and Coley at SS.

We played Cisco and Coley at FS.

Cordy might have played some at SS and FS too.

A few others played a handful of snaps, mostly in garbage time.

I think next year, we can lock in Cisco at FS and Iffy as a CB. Trill will start somewhere. He could be our nickel, a CB or even our SS.

I think he ends up at CB, mainly because we have experienced players to fill in at nickel (Stritz) and SS (Coley).

But there are a lot of young and talented players in the mix and most anything can happen, especially if the new DC brings a new scheme with him.

Well kids in Canada do go to a two year "college" after high school. They aren't JUCOs but they are older incoming freshman.
