Welcome to Bake Cookies Day!

As the holiday season gets into full swing, family and friends will be gathering together to make memories, exchange gifts, and eat food. Desserts are a favorite this time of year, and one of the most common and versatile is the cookie. Bake Cookies Day gives everyone the opportunity to get their hands dirty in some dough and bake cookies, so they are prepared for their holiday get-togethers.

Sweet and small, cookies are flat or slightly-raised cakes that are eaten as desserts or snacks. The word "cookie," which first appeared in print in 1695, comes from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "little cake." In fact, cookies became popular in America on account of the Dutch, who brought them to the New World and baked them in their settlements. Not everyone has the same name for them, however. For example, in England they are often referred to as "biscuits," and in Scotland, a "cookie" is a small bun.

Re-evaluating Syracuse football’s 2016 class (PS; Burrows)

When he took over as Syracuse football’s new head coach, Dino Babers had just 58 days to put together his 2016 recruiting class before National Signing Day.
Taking over for Scott Shafer, Babers and his staff overhauled the class, shedding all but four of Shafer’s 15 verbal commitments while adding 17 of their own.

Previous Shafer recruits Rex Culpepper, Scoop Bradshaw, Moe Neal and Sam Heckel all stayed with the Orange as Babers and his staff added eventual standouts such as Kendall Coleman, KJ Ruff, McKinley Williams and Andrew Armstrong.

Gerri “Babydoll” Williams Celebrates 50 Years at Syracuse University (syr.edu; Maser)

This past October, Gerri Williams celebrated a milestone that most employees—in any job, with any organization—only dream of attaining: her 50th anniversary with Syracuse University.
Williams began her career with Food Services in 1969. She worked in Washington Arms, Haven Hall and the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center and dabbled in Campus Catering before landing her current role in Manley Field House’s dining center. At Manley, she works as a group leader, serving the football players and coaches.

“While I was at the Faculty Center I was in the back of the house. I liked it, and everybody was nice to me, but something was missing,” Williams says. “I didn’t know what it was at first—then I realized, I missed connecting with the students, face to face.”

One day in ’99, her manager asked Williams if she could cover a shift at Manley. “I came over here and worked on the grill, I was talking to the kids and I loved it. I thought to myself, ‘This is the bomb!’” she says. “They kept saying to me ‘Gerri, can you stay here all the time?’ and I said, ‘It’s not up to me!’”

But fate was on Williams’ side. After she spent some time splitting shifts between Manley and Goldstein, Manley began serving lunch in addition to breakfast and dinner. A full-time position opened up for Williams. She recounts the day she found out she’d be permanently placed at the football dining center with the enthusiasm of someone who’d just won the jackpot on a slot machine.

“My manager, Kelley, called me up and said ‘Gerri, I’ve got some good news for you,’” Williams says. “They told me that this would be my job, all the time, year-round…I was so happy! I grabbed that poor lady, I was screaming and hollering, thanking the Lord.”

Virginia Tech football: Hokies pick up two commitments; more on the way? (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

The Virginia Tech Hokies wrapped up the final weekend before the early signing period with two new commitments.

First, three-star offensive lineman Kaden Moore flipped to the Hokies after previously being committed to Bowling Green. A 6’3”, 305-pound mauler from Bethlehem, Pa., is a player who will need a couple of years in the weight room.

COMMITTED #HOKIES
— Kaden Moore (@KadenMoore64) December 16, 2019
Moore is a bit of a late-bloomer who flew under the radar. It would explain his lack of offers and his commitment to Bowling Green. However, when watching Moore you see why Virginia Tech offensive line coach Vance Vice likes him. He is powerful and is a road-grader in the running game. He also plays with something you cannot teach and that is nastiness. That will give him a leg up at the next level.
Fortunately for the Hokies, they have enough talented young offensive lineman already on campus, so there is no need to rush Moore.

Later on Sunday, Tech picked up another commitment in three-star defensive end Justin Beadles. A 6’5 1/2”, 232-pounder from Sandy Creek High in Tyrone, Ga., is another prospect who was in Blacksburg this weekend.

Jeff Hafley introduced as the 36th head coach at Boston College (bostonherald.com; Thompson)

Jeff Hafley can pack a room.

An overflow crowd of Boston College staff members, boosters, alumni and media jammed inside the Barber Room of the Yawkey Center on Monday morning as Athletic Director Martin Jarmond introduced Hafley as the Eagles 36th head football coach. Hafley, 40, was joined by his wife, Gina, and two daughters, Leah and Hope.

“We set out to find a new coach and there were a few things that we wanted,” said Jarmond. “We wanted a man of integrity, we wanted someone that understood who we were and our Catholic Jesuit values.

“We wanted someone who was a teacher, we wanted someone passionate about what they do in their craft and developing young people and someone that wants to compete and win.

“We found everything, all of those and more in this guy, Jeff Hafley.”

Hafley grew emotional as he thanked his family members, supporters and the litany of college and NFL coaches that influenced his career and got him to this place and time.

Hafley came across as an individual who wears his heart of his sleeve, likes proving his critics wrong, learns from each experience and gets where he wants to go.

“It’s been a journey and its been hard and it’s been fun and without these people it wouldn’t be possible, I wouldn’t be standing here,” said Hafley.

“I’ve had to work really hard and I’ve had a chip on my shoulder and I’ve had to kick down doors. It’s been hard and it’s been real and worth it. I told Martin I have a list in my wallet of all the things doubters have said to me my whole life.”

Clemson tight end Braden Galloway back in fold for College Football Playoff (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

for gbo

Braden Galloway is back in the fold for the Clemson football team.

The sophomore tight end, who was one of three Clemson players to receive a one-year ban after testing positive for the banned substance ostarine prior to last year’s College Football Playoff, received official clearance from the NCAA on Sunday.

“Our compliance staff informed us that he is once again eligible after his 365 days concluded on Sunday,” Clemson football spokesperson Ross Taylor said.
Galloway, who played high school football at nearby Seneca High, has been practicing with the team. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Galloway played in 12 games as a freshman in 2018, catching five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman Davis Allen has been the Tigers’ leading pass catcher at tight end this season with five receptions for 53 yards.

Galloway could have an immediate impact and Coach Dabo Swinney expects him to be ready right away.
“The intensity is at a different level, but it’s not like he hasn’t been playing football all year,” Swinney said. “He’s been practicing every day. He’s in great shape. He’s caught a million balls.”

Heisman Winner Age Range, 2000-2019 (RX; HM)

Heisman Winner Age Range, 2000-2019
Previously I had commented on how old this year's Heisman winner, Joe Burrow, is (he's 23). That makes him the oldest winner in 16 years, and to find someone more than a few months older you have to go all the way back to Chris Weinke, Florida State QB, 2000 Heisman winner.

Here are the winners since Weinke, with ACC winners highlighted:

PFF: Best 2019 ACC offensive players (RX; HM)

PFF: Best 2019 ACC offensive players

PFF does NFL scouting evaluations. Here's their take on the best players with certain NFL skills (ACC players shown - click the link to read the rest):

From "College football's best at everything on offense"

BEST RED-ZONE QB: TREVOR LAWRENCE, CLEMSON
A key aspect to any quarterback's repertoire is the ability to find open throws in the red zone while also possessing the required arm strength to fit throws into tighter windows inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Lawrence did that better than any other quarterback this season, completing 31 of 42 passes for 240 yards and 18 touchdowns while avoiding any turnovers and leading the country with his 73.8% completion percentage.

MOST ELUSIVE RB ON RUSHES: TRAVIS ETIENNE, CLEMSON
At no point in the history of PFF's time grading college games have we seen a running back break tackles more frequently than Etienne did in 2019. He forced a missed tackle on 46% of his carries, breaking 84 tackles on his 181 attempts and gaining 969 yards after contact. He was the nation's most elusive back, and it wasn't even close.

BEST RB THROUGH CONTACT: A.J. DILLON, BOSTON COLLEGE
Dillon led the nation with 79 missed tackles forced and gained a whopping 1,104 yards after contact. He was dominant when tasked to run the ball, even though the defense knew the Boston College offense ran through him as he toted the rock 317 times this year.

BEST WR BY ROUTE
Out: Joe Reed, Virginia
Leading the nation with a combined 17 receiving conversions, including three scores and 14 first downs on out routes, Reed also finished the season with the most yards (313) and yards after the catch (179) on out routes. He was the highest-graded receiver on such routes and even brought in four contested catches on the route, tying for the most in the nation.

Corner: Tutu Atwell, Louisville
The emergence of Atwell came largely at the hands of his success on corner routes. One of the more difficult routes to accomplish, its usage has certainly gone down over time, but Atwell still made four receptions for 81 yards and a score. He connected on three more first downs and, most notably, was the only receiver in the country to see at least four catchable post routes and not drop one.

BEST SLOT RECEIVER: TUTU ATWELL, LOUISVILLE
Leading all receivers who played at least 100 snaps in the slot in overall grade, Atwell emerged onto the scene in a big way in 2019. He hauled in 49 catches from an interior alignment, ripping off 1,007 of his yards and 12 of his touchdowns from the slot. He made four contested catches and led the country with an average of 20.6 yards per catch from the slot.

Whenever they post defense, I'll try to post the ACC players here.

New Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant opens in Syracuse (PS; Pucci)

Tesfahiwot Okube grew up cooking the food traditional of his native Eritrea—first at a cafe at the Ethiopian refugee camp he called home for seven years and now, his own restaurant here in Syracuse.
His aptly-named EthioEritrea Restaurant opened in early November at 505 N. State St. The building was most recently home to Mai Lan. One of Syracuse’s oldest Vietnamese restaurants, Mai Lan closed in October 2018 after more than 25 years of business.

Okube’s menu is wide-ranging, but many start with the same base—injera, the sourdough flatbread made of teff flour that serves as the primary utensil, as the food is traditionally eaten by peeling off pieces of the flatbread and using it to grab the food. Many of the dishes are stews, called wots, made with meat—often beef, lamb or chicken—and a variety of vegetables. Another page of the menu is devoted to vegetarian and vegan dishes, such as braised greens and stews made with red lentils or chickpeas.

A little weird to think that Lamar Jackson is in the running for NFL rookie of the year and he's STILL younger than Joe Burrow! Also, when Jameis Winston won the Heisman, he was the youngest winner ever... then Jackson won it while 5 days younger than him.
