Welcome to National Apricot Day!
Related to the peach, the apricot’s velvety flesh is quite similar. However, the texture of the golden-orange fruit is firmer, and the flavor more tart than its cousin’s. Since we easily preserve the apricot, we enjoy this versatile fruit all year long – fresh, canned, and dried.
Apricots are found the world over but originated in northeastern China near the Russian border in ancient times. Later, the fruit was introduced to Europe and Armenia. The apricot found its way to North America when English colonists settled in Virginia. Apricots traveled further west when Spanish explorers and missionaries brought them on expeditions. This migration caused apricots to be grown commercially today.

How SU landed $25M donation: Gruden, Lallypalooza and a fountain of youth (PS; Carlson)
The party held on the Gulf Coast of Florida is called Lallypalooza and, like its musical namesake, it provides an annual opportunity for the all-grown-up to feel young again.
The first party included a $10,000 check that technically makes Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden a Syracuse booster. The second included the first public announcement that Joe Morris’ jersey would be honored at the Carrier Dome, a tearful moment that included family and teammates. The goal of the third, which will be held this February, is to deepen the connection of Syracuse football alumni from different generations, from Schwartzwalder to Shafer.
It is the place where John and Laura Lally plugged back into both Syracuse Athletics and Syracuse University, a connection that has led to replaced practice turf, a scholarship in Syracuse’s Whitman School and, most recently, a $25 million pledge to make the school more competitive with its ACC peers.

Eric Dungey joins XFL franchise in Dallas with league’s debut set for next month (PS; Carlson)
Former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey has been added to the roster for the Dallas Renegades of the XFL. The move was reported on the league’s transaction wire on Wednesday.
Dungey went undrafted after leading Syracuse to a 10-win season in 2018. He joined the New York Giants for training camp before being released. He joined the Cleveland Browns practice squad in October but was released in December without earning a call-up to the active roster.
Dallas added Dungey shortly after announcing that expected starter Landry Jones had suffered a knee injury during the team’s training camp. The injury is expected to keep Jones out four-to-six weeks, potentially impacting his status for the teams’ opener. Jones had a standout career with Oklahoma and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
After signing with the XFL, Jones was allocated to Dallas and reunited with former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who is the general manager and coach for the Renegades.
"We are sorry to see Landry sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks and are hopeful he will heal quickly and be back on the field at our opener, if not just shortly after,” Stoops said in a press release. “Landry is the leader of our team and will continue to play that key role.”
For the moment, though, Dungey is one of just two healthy quarterbacks on the Dallas roster. The other is Phillip Nelson. Nelson began his career at Minnesota and transferred to Rutgers, where he was dismissed before playing a game. He finished his career at East Carolina. He was cut from the Canadian Football League last year and played briefly in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football this past year.

Incredible Old Ed Orgeron Quote Going Viral Ahead Of National Championship (thespun.com; Lyons)
There may not be a college football coach that is the subject of more incredible anecdotes than LSU’s Ed Orgeron. With just a few days until his first national championship appearance as a head coach, ESPN has collected many of them, from his childhood to this season.
A number of Orgeron’s players reflect on him as head coach now, or as a recruiter a few years ago. We also hear from Pete Carroll, and other major figures that Orgeron worked for throughout his career.
There is also the famous Joe Burrow recruiting story, which was recounted last month. He explained a bit further just how he could get a restaurant to get 15 pounds of crawfish out of nowhere (and confirmed that they ate the entire thing).
The best quote may come from his time at Syracuse, of all places. Orgeron coached under the highly successful Paul Pasqualoni from 1995-97, a particularly strong stretch for the Orange in which they went 9-3, 9-3, and 9-4, winning the Big East in the last two seasons, and going to Gator, Liberty, and Fiesta Bowls.
Ed Orgeron’s time at Syracuse was very meaningful for him. Back in 2015, he lobbied for the Orange head coaching job, which eventually went to Dino Babers.
In the ESPN piece, longtime SU football equipment manager Kyle Fetterly remembers a time when he asked Coach O why he was showing up to workout at 4 a.m. before 5:45 workouts.
Orgeron was always the first guy in, full of energy, and he’d work out on the field just before practice — sit-ups, push-ups, chin-ups, squat thrusts. One day, one of Fetterly’s assistants stopped him.
“Coach, you’re in good shape. Why do you do all this?” he asked.
Orgeron looked stunned. To take a day off would mean falling behind, and that’s not something Orgeron would ever do.
“Son,” he said, “the day I can’t whoop a man’s ass is the day I don’t get out of bed.”
There’s nothing that really needs to be added there. It’s a perfect Coach O story.

Warwick Brings Professional Touch As FSU Football Chief Of Staff (seminoles.com; Linafelt)
Despite being 11 years and a few thousand miles removed from it, Bruce Warwick could never quite shake the allure of college football.
Warwick, Florida State football’s first ever chief of staff, spent the last 11 years working with the NFL’s Rams, eight of which came as the franchise’s director of operations.
Before that, though, Warwick’s career in football administration had taken him to Syracuse, Maryland, Clemson, Duke and Tennessee.
Warwick enjoyed his time with the Rams, particularly the achievement of overseeing the franchise’s move from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016. But for an east-coast native with roots in the college game, the opportunity to lead the front office at Florida State was too good to pass up.
“I’ve always had a great affection for college football,” Warwick said on Wednesday. “Living in Los Angeles is a little different. … As a family, we determined that this would be a good time to maybe head back east.”
And so they did. FSU head coach Mike Norvell named Warwick his chief of staff on December 28.
He’ll oversee all aspects of FSU football’s administration, and his influence will spread to the program’s coaching, recruiting, operations, academics and communications.
The way Warwick sees it, his job is to allow Norvell to focus exclusively on football as much as possible.
“When the head football coach wants to be involved in the football aspect of it, you need to help him out as much as you can administratively and take some of the things off of him,” Warwick said. “That’s what I’ll do.”
Teaming up with director of player development and operations Jeff Kupper, as well as director of high school relations Carlos Locklyn, Warwick will lead a front office that Norvell believes will be one of the best in the nation.

Hokies make big-time hire in new DL coach Bill Teerlinck (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
The Virginia Tech Hokies have two full-time staff openings, both on the defensive side of the football. Well, on Wednesday the Hokies announced the hiring of Bill Teerlinck, leaving Tech with just one opening left.
Head coach Justin Fuente announced, that eight-year NFL coaching veteran Bill Teerlinck is joining Virginia Tech as defensive line coach. Teerlinck has spent the past two seasons in that capacity with the Buffalo Bills.
Make no mistake, this is a big-time hire for the Hokies. Before you read where Teerlinck has ties with head coach Justin Fuente and think this is another Brad Cornelson, please stop.— Phil Steele (@philsteele042) January 8, 2020
Teerlinck is legit.
He spent the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, beginning in 2017 as an assistant defensive line coach Sean McDermott. He was promoted to defensive line coach in 2018 and remained in that capacity for the last two seasons. Teerlinck helped in the development of several talented defensive linemen including Ed Oliver, Shaq Lawson and Jordan Phillips, among others.
Teerlinck began his coaching career at Illinois State with Fuente. He spent two years there as the defensive line coach. In 2007, he moved on to the Indianapolis Colts where he would spend the next five seasons as a defensive assistant, working for Tony Dungy at one time. He coached the likes of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis during his time with the Colts.

WHEN LSU HAS THE BALL
What can Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables cook up to stop LSU's hyper-aggressive passing game that often attacks with five receivers?

DeWitt distribution center ‘is 100 percent Amazon,' expert says (PS; Doran)
A 112,000-square-foot warehouse/distribution center proposed in DeWitt is “100 percent” for Amazon, according to a logistics expert.
Logistics expert Marc Wulfraat told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard in an interview Wednesday that every indicator points to Amazon: the size of the building, its large lot with ample space for trucks and employee parking, its code name, the design, the developer and its location close to railroads and highways.
The developer proposing the center in DeWitt - Montante Construction of Buffalo - is currently building a similar distribution center in Tonawanda for online giant worldwide retailer Amazon.
The plans submitted by the company to DeWitt and Tonawanda officials use similar or identical language to describe the projects.
Montante Construction has submitted plans to the town of DeWitt for a distribution center on 42 acres at 3864 Kirkville Road for a “national logistics company." The developer declined to says whether the company is Amazon.
Wulfratt, president of MWPVL International, a Montreal global supply chain and logistics consulting firm, said there’s no doubt the DeWitt center will be a “last-mile delivery station” for Amazon. It’s where all packages for the Syracuse market will arrive, be sorted and then be placed onto vans to be delivered to people’s homes or designated Amazon lockers, he said.
