Welcome to Shrove Monday!
Shrove Monday is part of the Shrovetide celebrations that encompass the week before Lent. It takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. In between these two days is Shrove Tuesday. "Shrove" is the past tense of "shrive," which means to obtain absolution from sin. Shriving can be done through confession and penance. Historically, English Christians were supposed to do some shriving before Lent. "Shrove Monday" and "Shrove Tuesday" are terms not widely used in the United States and Canada, but they are still sometimes used in Lutheran, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches.
Shrove Monday is part of the Carnival celebrations that take place in many countries. In Germany, Denmark, and Austria, it is known as Rosenmontag, meaning Rose Monday. In Germany, the apex of Carnival in on Shrove Monday, while in some other countries it is on Shrove Tuesday. German schools are usually closed on the day, and workers often have the day off. Parades are held, with floats of a satirical nature that lampoon politicians often being made. Dressing up in costumes, dancing, and drinking are also common. In the Rhineland of Germany, that day is part of Fasching, which is the Feast of Fools. There are parades, marching, satirical floats, and merrymaking.

Syracuse Football: Orange report card after XFL Week 3 (itlh; Edsen Jr)
XFL Week 3 is already in the books. Here’s a full report on how every former Syracuse football alum performed and who stood out.
Another exciting week of XFL football is officially in the books. Here’s how all the former Syracuse football alum performed in XFL Week 3.
Eric Dungey, quarterback, Dallas Renegades
Eric Dungey didn’t register a stat on the box sheet, but the Dallas Renegades got a satisfying 24-12 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in XFL Week 2.
Although something that is far more important is what the Dungey family is going through this week. Earlier this week the Dungey family announced that Eric’s father, Tim, died after his battle with cancer.
Eric shared this statement on Instagram:
“Yesterday I lost the man who made me who I am today. He was my idol, my biggest supporter, my toughest critic, and the most selfless person I’ve ever known. The lessons he taught me growing up will forever be engraved into me and I will pass them onto my own children one day.
He taught me to never give up and that actions will always speak louder than words. To respect everyone, but most importantly respect yourself and always fight for you and the ones you love.
A mix of emotions runs through me ranging from sadness to anger, but the overpowering emotion of happiness and joy from memories shared with him will forever bypass all. I love you, Dad. May you Rest In Peace”

Ten ACC football players primed for breakout seasons in 2020 (247sports.com; Stepien)
While the College Football Playoff national championship game is yet to be played, it can be said that all eyes are already on the 2020 season.
In the year-round sport that college football has become, the NCAA transfer portal and National Signing Day has served as the bridge to spring camp. And in just three months after that, media days arrive before fall camp revs up.
As the forward-thinking discussion begins, expectations come with it. And from way-too-early rankings to Heisman Trophy contenders, the ACC — with Clemson leading the charge — will be right back in the discussions for each.
The likes of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence are already known nationally as full-blown stars. Who else might join that discussion when the 2020 campaign kicks off?
On top of the two players from the conference that were recognized by 247Sports as the top 10 national names primed for breakout seasons, scroll through the following to see who else cracks the conversation for the ACC.
LEVI JONES, NC STATE LB
247Sports' Take: Remember Levi Jones? If not, the ACC — and country — is about to receive a reminder. A four-star recruit as the 247Sports Composite's No. 93 overall prospect, No. 6 outside linebacker and No. 13 player in Texas for the 2017 class, the Austin Westlake product signed with USC out of high school.
As a freshman with the Trojans in 2017, Jones logged all 14 games and recorded 15 tackles while backing up at inside linebacker. But after recording 13 tackles (three for loss) and three pass breakups through eight games in 2018, Jones got dismissed from the program Nov. 13. Following a violation of team rules, Jones departed from USC and landed with NC State.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder's return to the field comes at an opportunistic time after the Wolfpack saw starting linebacker Brock Miller to the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Jones is expected to fill the void as a starter alongside sophomore Payton Wilson, who was also a four-star recruit as the 247Sports Composite's No. 79 overall prospect and No. 4 outside linebacker for the 2018 class.

Ex-Penn State DE Daniel Joseph headed to ACC program as graduate transfer (saturdaytradition.com; Schutti)
On Sunday, the former Nittany Lion announced that he’ll finish his college football career in the ACC, as he’ll be heading to North Carolina State. He will have one year of eligibility remaining to use with the Wolf Pack, and will be immediately eligible for the 2020 season as a graduate trasnfer.
Joseph tweeted out his decision on Sunday.
“To Penn State and the best fans in college football, thank you for the love and support and allowing me to chase my dreams on the field and in the classroom. You will always hold a special place in my heart,” Joseph said. “With that being said, I am ready for the next chapter of my life and am looking forward to what the future holds. I will be attending the University of North Carolina State for my last year of eligibility.”
Joseph appeared in 33 games during his Penn State career, tallying 30 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He was a four-star member of Penn State’s 2016 recruiting class and is a native of Lake Forest, Illinois.
Last season, NC State finished with a 4-8 record, which included a 1-7 mark in ACC play.

Relating Odds of National Title (RX; HM)
Relating Odds of National Title
This time of year it's easy to think your team's going to win the CFP National Championship. If that's your thinking, Banner Society would like to reel you in just a little bit!
From "The READ OPTION at Banner Society: The odds of dying versus winning at Rutgers..."
The odds of your team winning the national title aren’t good. They’re probably worse than you even realize...
The odds of becoming a millionaire in the United States stand at about one in 30... To put this in college football terms: You stand the same chance of becoming a millionaire as 30/1 national title contender Notre Dame has of winning the 2020 national championship, based on current odds... Notre Dame’s last title happened 32 years ago...
...compare [odds of your team winning the 2020 national championship] to the chances of non-football things happening to you in real life, based on numbers from the CDC or this book. At 9/2, betting on Alabama to win the 2020 title is still more of a risk than... the 38% chance of a passenger surviving any plane crash...

Dave Doeren Searching For Answers With Coaching Staff Changes (southernpigskin.com; Holcomb)
In 2019, N.C. State finished with its worst record (4-8) since head coach Dave Doeren’s first season in 2013. Heading into 2020, Doeren has made sweeping changes to his coaching staff in hopes of rebounding back to near the top of the Atlantic Division
N.C. State counted on massive offensive changes, both to the program’s staff and starting lineup, to keep the Wolfpack relevant in 2019. That didn’t happen, though, as N.C. State finished with its worst record (4-8) since head coach Dave Doeren’s first season in 2013.
But Doeren is turning to a similar strategy again this offseason, making sweeping changes to his coaching staff in the hopes of rebounding back to near the top of the Atlantic Division.
N.C. State will have a new offensive and defensive coordinator in 2020, and it’s the second straight season the program will have a new play caller. Last season, the Wolfpack promoted Des Kitchings and George McDonald to a split offensive coordinator situation after Eli Drinkwitz left for Appalachian State. McDonald will return as an assistant head coach and passing game coordinator this season, but Kitchings will not.
It was hardly only their fault, but Kitchings and McDonald couldn’t jump start the Wolfpack offense in 2019. N.C. State finished 11th in total offense (380 yards per game) and 12th in scoring (22.1 point per contest) in the ACC. It was N.C. State’s lowest scoring output in a season under Doeren.

Construction to start on new homes on site of former CNY golf course (PS; Doran)
Construction is expected to begin in early March on 172 new homes on the site of the former Seneca Golf Club in Van Buren.
The golf course, which closed in November 2019, was sold in June 2019 for $800,000. Owners Bill and Dawn Tsetsanos sold the approximate 90 acres to Brolex Properties LLC. The site is at 7360 State Fair Boulevard.
The new housing development is called Treybrook, after developer Brandon Jacobson’s two children, Jacobson said. Jacobson is with Brolex Properties.
Treybrook will include an assortment of attached townhomes, detached patio homes and single-family homes. The homes will range from two-bedroom ranch homes to five-bedroom colonials, Jacobson said. Square footage will range from 1,200 square feet to 4,000 square feet.
Jacobson said there is a need for housing in that area as companies like Tessy Plastics expand. Also, the homes are in the Baldwinsville school district, and people can commute to downtown Syracuse in about 10 minutes.
