National-Limerick-Day1-1-1024x802.jpg

Welcome to National Limerick Day!

National Limerick Day, held every year on May 12, pays homage to the man who made the short poems widespread — Edward Lear. Lear was an English poet who is known for his nonsense-style, often writing with made-up words, telling tales of “Quangle-Wangles,” and “runcible spoons.” He wrote 212 limericks, most of which didn’t follow the specific rhyming rules of the style. Although the by definition limericks have five lines, Lear’s were often shown in three or four, to give space to his accompanying illustrations and drawings. (A favorite of his: “There was an Old Man of Peru, who watched his wife making a stew; But once by mistake, In a stove she did bake, That unfortunate Man of Peru.”)

Orange Watch: Syracuse football's Dino Babers working remotely like everyone else - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Over the past week, the ACC Network brought the league’s 14 football coaches together (with a lot of coercing from his school’s football media relations directors) in a video roundtable to take some of the steam off of the monotony of Type A personalities, i.e. football coaches, being confined to their home office environments just like the majority of us. While there’s plenty the coaching staffs can accomplish virtually, especially on the recent recruiting front for the Orange, it’s also entertaining to hear more about the non-football side of SU’s fifth year head coach, from questions posed by ACCN hosts Jordan Cornette and Kelsey Riggs, while “seated” alongside his coaching peers.

With spring football practice canceled in March, a necessitated shift in how to effectively communicate with prospects between the current April 15-May 31 evaluation period of limited direct contact, and preparing for all sorts of different scenarios as to when the 2020 season can start, Dino Babers, like his contemporaries, is heading into uncharted territory for a genre of football CEOs that revolve their professional lives around following specific routines.

Babers and his peers let their hair down a little bit in answering all sorts of personality-driven questions on the ACCN program. Among the tidbits: Yes, Babers admitted missing showering one day during remote work from home; no, he has not found time to read a book, and he has never played a prank on any of his coaching staffs.

We have transcribed and edited for clarity two of the questions Babers was asked below:

Would you rather be quarantined with an offensive player, or a defensive player?

“I’d rather be quarantined with an offensive player (smiling and chuckling), and my defensive players know I won’t lie (laughing and much to the on-screen dismay of counterpart Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, a well-known defensive disciple).”

What’s the worst job you ever had?

“I had a job in high school where I was working at a (StarKist) tuna factory. At the time, it was a hell of a job, high school going to college. I’m working at the tuna company and at the time I am making more money than my Dad.

First of all, tuna is (not small, it’s a big fish). We’re taking these giant saws and we’re sawing the tuna in half and baking them in these large walk-in ovens, and pulling everything off so it can fit in those cans and get to your (gesturing to the other coaches) houses.

You do that for eight hours, you come home at 6:45 a.m., and my Mom, who’s really religious, for the first time in my life she told me I had to take my clothes off outside, put them in the washer, start the washer, walk through the house, and she wouldn’t even let me have a towel around me, go straight to the shower, and she’d have breakfast for me when I woke up.

It was as smelly situation.”

Syracuse football has a great chance to land 2021 QB Riley Leonard (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football is prioritizing 2021 quarterback Riley Leonard, and the Orange appears in solid shape to potentially win the recruiting battle for him.

Riley Leonard, a two-sport star at Fairhope High School in Fairhope, Ala., received a scholarship offer from Syracuse football coaches about a week ago, and the Orange could prove in line to ultimately secure his services as part of the team’s 2021 class.

The 6-foot-4, dual-threat quarterback, rated as three stars by , told Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com in a recent article that the ‘Cuse is prioritizing him.

“They’ve told me I’m No. 1 and that’s the truth,” Leonard, who also excels in basketball, said in the story. “They told me I was their guy so that’s really important to me as a player.”

According to 247Sports and , he currently holds additional scholarship offers from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Duke, Nebraska, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

Nebraska, which plays in the rugged Big Ten Conference, would have likely amounted to among the stiffest competition for the Orange as it relates to Leonard, although he surely could snag other offers in the near term.

However, Syracuse’s position with Leonard certainly improved after word broke over the weekend that the Cornhuskers got a commitment from Heinrich Haarberg, a 2021 three-star prospect who attends Kearney Catholic High School in Kearney, Neb.

Fairhope QB emerges as 2021 QB prospect (al.com; Kennedy)

Fairhope junior Riley Leonard is a humble young man, but that doesn’t mean the multi-sport doesn’t have big goals.

When pressed about his ideal scenario for college athletics, the 6-foot-4, 187-pound point guard/quarterback smiled and said, “I’d say Duke for basketball and Alabama for football. That’s still a long way off, so for now I’m just playing it out to see what happens. But those would be my dream offers.”

Leonard is intriguing as a prospect in both sports because of his incredible athleticism for a player his size.

“I think when it’s said and done Riley is a Power 5 quarterback,” said QB Country’s David Morris, who works with Leonard. “He’s a little raw, but he has the stuff both physically and mentally.”

Enjoy Andre Cisco While You Still Can – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (oragngefizz.net; Shults)

Well two years with Andre Cisco came and went quickly. After one more season, the rising junior will probably be off to the NFL. If there was ever a diamond in the rough discovered by Dino Babers, it was Cisco.
FIZZ FEEDBACK: Syracuse’s Andre Cisco was ranked as the second best safety in next year’s NFL Draft by Mel Kiper. Where do you think Cisco will he picked?
— Orange Fizz (@OrangeFizz) May 7, 2020
Cisco enters the 2020 season as the FBS active leader in interceptions with 12. He’s also second in the FBS in passes defended per game, averaging 1.27. At safety Cisco has been able to do what he does best, find the football and take it the other way. He did that seven times his freshman season. In just nine games last year, he still finished with 5 interceptions.

Cisco can also transition to multiple looks in a defensive scheme – which he’ll need to do under Tony White’s 3-3-5 defense. In the past two years, Cisco has shown he can serve as a safety manning a single-high look, where he gets to roam around making plays. This is probably what he’s best at. But he’s also able to work in the slot and cover wide receivers all the way downfield.

Syracuse faces new challenges recruiting in the ACC - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

Recruiting in the ACC can be more challenging than playing in the ACC.

Clemson is a recruiting wagon. Florida State, despite struggling the past couple of seasons, is still Florida State. North Carolina and Louisville both appear to be on the rebound. And even Boston College has upgraded from pitching #Dudes to recruiting guru, Jeff Hafley.

And like it has on all other, more serious aspects of life, the COVID-19 pandemic has complicated recruiting efforts for seemingly all programs. For a school like Syracuse, which relies on campus visits to sway the opinion of football prospects, the inability to bring recruits to upstate New York makes landing ACC-caliber talent that more challenging.

Dino Babers and his staff – some of whom head into their first full season recruiting in the ACC for Syracuse – have to navigate unchartered waters as they look to stock their roster.

Fans – and some columnists *drops head, raises hand* – tend to easily get caught up in the star ranking system assigned to recruits and classes. Chandler Jones and his 2-star ranking were an example of an obvious miss.

A better way to evaluate a recruit, at least from a fan’s perspective, is to look at his offer list. But with staffs and recruits temporarily forbidden from in-person contact, offer lists might not be as reliable. Fans must trust that staffs can correctly spot talent. That seems to be Syracuse’s strategy for the Class of 2021, at least in the near future.

Syracuse football doles out a bunch of scholarship offers in various classes (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football remains quite busy these days, as the Orange has pledged more than a dozen scholarship offers just in the last week alone.

Syracuse football continues to show positive signs with its recruiting efforts, despite the novel coronavirus pandemic that has forced Orange coaches to conduct virtual visits with prospects.

The ‘Cuse has landed a handful of new commitments of late, which Inside The Loud House has documented. But Syracuse has also offered scholarships to at least 16 guys over the past week or so, according to the players’ Twitter pages, as well as a review of recruiting services like 247Sports and .

Let’s take a brief glance into who these offers have gone to, and we’ve organized the prospects by their class. Of course, we’ll continue to monitor the recruitment of all these players, and hopefully some of them will select the Orange!

2021 Class

Austin Roon is a 6-foot-3 outside linebacker who attends Byron Center High School in Byron Center, Mich. Per 247Sports, the three-star Roon is rated No. 60 at his position in this class.

Mark Story: If you want college football in 2020-21, this is the one thing that must happen first (fltimes.com; Story)

Here's a sentence you don't see written often in the American sports media: Mark Emmert is right.

If you were not following the NCAA's Twitter feed Friday evening, you might have missed the president of the college sports governing body render his opinion in a video question-and-answer session on what must happen for there to be college football during the 2020-21 school year.

As all well know, the impending college football season is very much in doubt with the overwhelming majority of college campuses shut down as part of the efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

"If you don't have students on campus, you don't have student-athletes on campus," Emmert said. "That doesn't mean (the school) has to be up and running in the full normal model, but you have to treat the health and well-being of the athletes at least as much as the regular students."

In this case, the much-criticized NCAA leader is on target.

Clemson football: 2020 in Chestnut Hill will be measuring stick for the Tigers (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

for gbo

Looking at the 2020 Clemson football schedule, there is one game that sticks out more than the rest when looking at 12 regular-season games.

No, we are not talking about Notre Dame on November 7th. That will be a night game of teams ranked in the Top 5 of the country and will not be overlooked by anyone wearing orange and white that night.

However, there is a game in early October that everyone should circle as this is a game that will let us know exactly where Clemson is in 2020. We are talking about the trip to Chestnut Hill and facing Boston College on a Friday night.

No, Boston College does not have the talent that Clemson does but they do have a new coaching staff and will have new philosophies on both sides of the ball. This will be a very different Boston College team than what we have seen in recent years. However, they will still have that blue-collar work ethic that BC teams are known for.

Why is this a measuring stick game? For a couple of reasons actually.

The first is it is on a short week. There are a lot of young guys that are going to contribute to Clemson’s defense. Can they be prepared and focused when thrown off their routine that early in the season?

We have seen almost every season, that one game that gives Clemson football trouble on the road – 2016 at FSU, 2017 at Syracuse, 2018 at Texas A&M and at UNC in 2019. This has the potential to be one of those games.

As you can see, even though we've lost some folks, the subscriber count today - 74.4 million - is more than it was last August - and is creeping up on the SECN's 85 million!

My revenue estimate (based on $1.00 per subscriber, or about 80% of the SECN's $1.25 rate) came out to around $10 million per school [see Updated ACCN Revenue Projection]. Now there are even more subscribers, so I don't see a need to revise that number down at this time.

Plans for reopening take shape in CNY: Here’s what we know (PS; Baker)

As Central New York inches toward reopening segments of its economy this weekend, local leaders are being given more discretion to dictate what that will look like.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo selected a group of regional leaders to serve as the state’s eyes and ears in Central New York. That group will advise state officials on progress toward reopening and pull levers to balance restarting the economy while containing any potential future outbreak of Covid-19.

“This is going to be a shift,” Cuomo said Monday. “This reopening phase is locally driven, regionally driven and regionally designed.”

It’s still unclear what, entirely, local businesses will need to do in order to reopen. But several members of the Central New York advisory group said owners will likely be able to self-certify that they’re able to safely reopen, then get to work.
...

Brown said the current plan is for him and his staff to return to the building on June 15, and he will stick to that until someone at the university tells him otherwise. Already, Brown is thinking about how many people can safely fit into his office, coach meeting rooms and the team meeting room, in addition to how many players will be allowed to work out in the weight room at the same time.
