This was good work. Moving to the ACC hurt Syracuse for basketball because we lost so many rivalries with nearby schools and lost a lot of our access to playing in the NYC area. Our big recruiting areas have historically been NYC, Philly and DC and we have no one in our league any longer from any of those areas. The ACC was an awful fit from that perspective. It wouldn't have been so bad had Maryland stayed. We also had some history with the Terps, it is an important area for recruiting for basketball and football and we have a ton of fans and alums who live in the DC area. Replacing them with a school like UL was awful for us. We don't have almost any history with Louisville. It is the hardest school for SU fans to get to. The culture is completely different. Ugh. It wouldn't have been so bad had Rutgers and/or UConn come in with us. Yes, we dislike both but at least we would have had another team or two that is easy to get to, more visibility to prime recruiting areas and more access to our fan base in the NYC/NJ/New England areas. From a football perspective, it wouldn't have been so bad had West Virginia also been part of the ACC. WVU was a much bigger rival than BC (or Rutgers or Temple or UConn), and even a bigger rival than Pitt. Only Penn State would have been bigger. Then, we get put in the opposite division from old rivals Miami and VT, and only play them once every 6 years! From a Syracuse perspective, the way things are set up is awful. I hope down the road that rational people make good decisions and set things up so the ACC becomes a real conference in football. When you play a conference school at home in football each every 12 years, you are not playing in a conference. Not really. This is a crappy confederation right now. It is no surprise the ACC lacks the passion and excitement of some other conferences that play each other so much more often. The ACC is hurting themselves badly with a series of mistakes and bad decisions.
