Fly a Kite Day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (some sources say he flew his kite on June 10). His experiment led to further understanding of positive and negative charges, the proving that lightning was an electrical discharge, and to the invention of the lightning rod—which provided a safe way to discharge electricity and a way to prevent fires. Lightning rods are still used today to protect buildings, ships, and people.
Franklin began his experiments with electricity in 1747 and began hypothesizing about the connection between electricity and lightning two years later. He set out to prove his hypothesis; his idea was to erect iron rods into storm clouds to attract electricity. He believed he would need to be on high ground for his experiment to work, but he was in Philadelphia, a city that is quite flat. At first, he was waiting for the steeple to be finished at Christ Church, believing that he could use it for his experiment.

Syracuse's Josh Black watches tweet go viral, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson responds (cnycentral.com; video; Tamurian)
Social media has become the standard form of communication for the majority of people around the world.
That means if you put out a Facebook post, Instagram photo or Twitter message, it has the potential to reach millions of people.
A Syracuse University senior defensive lineman was the latest to post something and watch it explode along the social media universe, reaching thousands of people.
Black posted a video of himself doing a back flip off a wall, tweeting a message at one of the most famous actors in America.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, a former University of Miami defensive lineman and WWE wrestler, is now an actor starring in a variety of films, but most known for HBO's hit show 'Ballers'.
'The Rock' soon responded to Black's tweet with a noteworthy message.
"Wow, this is a helluva athlete -- and he squats over 700 pounds in the Syracuse weight room. You're on our radar big man. Keep kickin' a** and despite the Coronavirus challenges, I hope you and the team have a great season."
The tweet has been liked more than 10,000 times and retweeted nearly a thousand times, with the numbers continuously increasing.

Syracuse Football: Orange turns to offensive line with Austyn Kauhi commit (itlh; Adler)
Austyn Kauhi, a 2021 three-star prospect, has verbally committed to Syracuse football.
Austyn Kauhi, an athletic, agile offensive tackle in the 2021 class, has given Syracuse football its inaugural pledge on the offensive line in this recruiting cycle.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Kauhi, a rising senior at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School in Honolulu, revealed his commitment to the Orange program via his Twitter page.
Although unranked by , 247Sports rates Kauhi as a three-star player who is No. 140 across the country at the offensive-tackle position in the 2021 class, as well as the No. 12 prospect in the state of Hawaii.
According to a review of and the 247Sports Web site, Kauhi has received 10 scholarship offers. Other squads to offer him are Central Michigan, Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Navy, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV.
The ‘Cuse doesn’t typically recruit much in Hawaii, however, Syracuse does have some connections to that state. Orange head coach Dino Babers played running back and defensive back at the University of Hawaii and also coached there, for example.
Per a Syracuse.com report, ‘Cuse offensive-line coach Mike Cavanaugh recruited Kauhi. The article says that Cavanaugh served as the offensive-line coach at the University of Hawaii from 1999 until 2004.I AM 100% COMMITTED!!

Syracuse Football: Orange in the mix for elite 2022 QB Peter Delaportas (itlh; Adler)
Pro-style quarterback Peter Delaportas, recently offered by Syracuse football, is athletic, strong and accurate on the move.
Peter Delaportas is a top-10 pro-style quarterback in the 2022 class, and Syracuse football has entered the fray to land the four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Delaportas, a rising junior who attends Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, N.J., is slotted by 247Sports as the No. 236 player overall in his class, as well as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback and the No. 5 guy in the state of New Jersey.
The Orange offered a scholarship to Delaportas only a few days ago, a development that he revealed on Twitter. Per a review of the 247Sports Web site and , Delaportas, who also excels in wrestling, presently holds eight football scholarship offers.
Besides the ‘Cuse, the offers have come from Boston College, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. After a great talk with Coach Achuff,
Honored amd humbled to be offered by Syracuse University @LB_theHUNT @BobbyDeren @rivalsmike @PopeJohnLionsFB

Syracuse Football: SU athletics officials are acting with caution (itlh; Adler)
All of ‘Cuse Nation wants Syracuse football to compete this fall, and university administrators are taking the right approach in being prudent.
Uncertainty surrounding the novel coronavirus pandemic – what’s occurring at present, and the possibility of a so-called “second wave” later this year – means that it remains unclear as to whether Syracuse football will actually play in official games in the coming months.
Yes, several dozen Orange players returned to the Hill last week for voluntary work-outs. They, along with coaches, team personnel, and athletics department employees were tested for Covid-19 this past Tuesday morning.
Thankfully, SU athletics leaders, in partnership with public-health and government officials, have crafted a detailed operational plan for bringing ‘Cuse football players and other fall-sport student-athletes back to campus for voluntary training.
From my perspective, they are moving things forward, but in an extremely careful way. Even as NCAA officials weigh a proposed pre-season plan for college football later this week, unfortunately news reports have surfaced that players at a few programs around the country have tested positive for Covid-19.

Syracuse Football: Tommy DeVito the next Joe Burrow? (itlh; Mlodzinski)
Year two of Tommy DeVito as the Syracuse football starting quarterback is right around the corner. His ceiling? The Joe Burrow of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Can Syracuse football QB Tommy DeVito be the best thing? Well, according to Yahoo Sports, don’t rule him out from a breakout year in 2020. Eric Edholm, the lead NFL Draft analyst at Yahoo Sports, listed Tommy DeVito in the ‘Others of note’ category in a recent article speculating the next Joe Burrow of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Brock Purdy, Kellen Mond, D’Eriq King, and a few others were the main selections who Edholm highlighted in his article. However, it’s notable that the SU signal-caller was placed in the article, to begin with. This shows his potential is still there, and especially that even after a so-so 2019, college football experts haven’t totally written him off yet.
While Edholm didn’t go into depth about the DeVito selection as an honorable mention, that’s where we come in.
For starters, I totally agree with this selection and placement. DeVito absolutely deserves to be on this list. While he and the Orange didn’t live up to full expectations, his 19 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and over 2,300 passing yards showed a player with a strong arm, who just needs to limit mistakes.
Some of those mistakes weren’t all of DeVito’s fault. The Syracuse football offensive line was dismal last season, something that the ‘Cuse needs to fix. It goes without saying that even a decent O-Line can keep the Orange competitive in 2020, but given DeVito is a pocket passer, it becomes that much more important. He can run enough to keep defenses on their feet, but it isn’t a strength of his, meaning he has to rely on protection upfront.

Syracuse Football: Defense takes hit with Allen Stritzinger in transfer portal (itlh; Adler)
Allen Stritzinger is at least the third defensive player for Syracuse football to enter the transfer portal in recent weeks.
Syracuse football is seeing another player, defensive back Allen Stritzinger, arrive at the transfer portal, although he does have the option to return to the Hill if he doesn’t like the other possible destinations out there for him.
CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister first reported this news, which Stritzinger then confirmed via his Twitter page. Although Stritzinger is a reserve safety, per his bio on cuse.com, his potential departure from Central New York would decrease the Orange’s depth on defense.
The 6-foot, 194-pound Stritzinger, who is entering his senior campaign, has competed in 29 games, with one start, over three seasons.
Stritzinger, after spending his freshman stint at running back, switched to defense in 2018. In 20 contests over the past two stanzas on the defensive side, he has registered 27 tackles (14 solo) and four passes defended, including one interception.
As McAllister noted, Stritzinger’s lone pick came in the team’s 2018 Camping World Bowl victory versus West Virginia, which pushed SU to 10-3 and a final No. 15 ranking in the major polls.
“For we live by faith not by sight.”
(2 Corinthians 5:7)
Thank you God for continuously blessing me and helping me maintain my faith in you. I have officially entered into the transfer portal.
A three-star prospect prior to coming on board at Syracuse during the 2017 recruiting cycle, Stritzinger attended De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren, Mich.— Allen Stritzinger (@Stay_Winnin_) June 11, 2020

Syracuse Football: Keys to a three-peat versus Western Michigan (itlh; Mlodzinski)
On September 26, Syracuse football will travel to Western Michigan for a matchup against the Broncos. Here’s now the Orange can come away with a win.
Ahh, Syracuse football and Western Michigan. One of the greatest rivalries in college football hist…
Okay, well not quite. But for the third straight season, the two teams will face off in a non-conference battle, pitting the ACC against the MAC.
To be fair, the Broncos’ coaching staff does have ties to Syracuse, as Western Michigan Head Coach Tim Lester was once the offensive coordinator for the Orange. Clearly, there’s been no bad blood – and quite the opposite really – as the two sides have created a recent partnership, playing every year since 2018.
Cuse will look to make it three consecutive wins against Western Michigan, as the Orange defeated the Broncos 55-42 in 2018, followed by a 52-33 win last season.
If anything can be counted on, it’s that scoring will be plentiful – so much so that the winning team may need to put up at least 40 points to feel safe.
The Broncos finished 7-6 last season, appearing in a bowl game for the second straight season. They’re set to lose three-year starter Jon Wassink, which in itself points to a potential rough start to the season for WMU. However, it’s a team that does return four of five starting offensive linemen from a year ago, perhaps leading to a more advanced run game, and comfort for the new starting quarterback.

Louisville football: Legacy recruit trending to the Cards (BRL; Lane)
Louisville football may be on commit watch.
Scott Satterfield, ShaDon Brown, and the entire Louisville football defensive staff have done an incredible job recruiting the safety position in the class of 2021.
As if what the Cards already have in hand for the class wasn’t enough, things got even more encouraging when a prominent recruiting expert put a crystal ball pick in for a rising three-star safety.
Four-star Benjamin Perry and three-star Bralyn Oliver are both set to play for Louisville starting in 2021, giving Bryan Brown two big (6’3,190-pounds & 6’2, 195-pounds respectively), fast, and versatile playmakers in the back end. You’d think after adding those two along with Josh Minkins and Lovie Jenkins 2020 that the staff would be done at the position – but in the words of Lee Corso, “not so fast, my friends.”
The name TJ Quinn first emerged on the Louisville radar early last month, when Satterfield and company officially threw their name into the ring with a group of ACC programs including Syracuse, Boston College, North Carolina State, and Virginia Tech. Thanks to one existing connection to the program, Louisville quickly shot up his list of schools and now look primed to land the Georgia safety.

Athlon Magazine reveals ACC preseason power rankings (247sports.com; Stepien)
Given the dominance that the conference has seen for the past five college football seasons, it's no secret that Clemson is once again a favorite to win the ACC in 2020. While the Tigers are in a favorable spot to keep the conference crown from the Atlantic Division and reach the College Football Playoff national championship game once more, there's an intriguing game of musical chairs going on with the other 13 teams.
As each takes aim at Clemson in 2020, among other storylines, who has the best shot to knock off the Tigers? That's where Athlon comes in, with the national college football magazine recently unveiling its preseason power rankings for the ACC and others.
Of the 14 teams in the conference, scroll through the following slides to see where each was ranked by Athlon heading into the 2020 season. Ranked from seventh to first in each division, the subsequent list starts with the Coastal, followed by the Atlantic.
7 COASTAL: GEORGIA TECH | 6 COASTAL: DUKE

7 ATLANTIC: BOSTON COLLEGE | 6 ATLANTIC: SYRACUSE
(Photo: Rich Barnes, USA TODAY Sports)
7. Boston College (4-8, 1-7 ACC) — The jury is out for new head coach Jeff Hafley, who was the architect of Ohio State's top-ranked passing defense in 2019 as the Buckeyes' co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Hafley, 41, is a first-time head coach in just his second year back at the college level after spending nearly the past decade in the NFL. Boston College, which went 6-7 overall and 4-4 against ACC play in 2019 under former head coach Steve Addazio, has pieces to compete right away and a solid offensive line. However, after losing the likes of quarterback Anthony Brown (Oregon graduate transfer) and running back AJ Dillon (2020 NFL Draft) while Notre Dame transfer and former four-star recruit Phil Jurkovec waiting on an immediate-eligibility decision from the NCAA, the Eagles' initial season under Hafley is a question mark.
6. Syracuse (6-6, 2-6 ACC) — Head coach Dino Babers dearly missed former multiyear starting quarterback Eric Dungey, transitioning to then-sophomore Tommy DeVito and undergoing a 2019 season of growing pains. After the Orange's 10-3 (6-2 ACC) season in 2018, a 5-7 (2-6) 2019 campaign brought Babers back down to earth. With a year of starting experience under the belt of DeVito, who flashed at times while tying Ryan Nassib (2010) and Donovan McNabb (1996) for most touchdown passes by a sophomore in program history with 19, 'Cuse should at least get back to a bowl game with an even record.

Restaurants reopen: The scene from one CNY dining district (PS; Cazentre)
Restaurant dining rooms in Central New York opened this morning for the first time in almost 90 days.
You wouldn’t know it by the scene around lunchtime today in Syracuse’s Westcott Street business district.
Some places that decided to open their doors had decent crowds, but it was a nice morning and people sat outside on decks or patios, as they have been allowed to do for the past week. Many places also did a brisk takeout business, as they have since dining rooms were closed on March 16.
For the first few hours, no one took advantage of the opportunity to sit inside. It’s likely that will change over the course of the day and into the coming weeks.
"It’s all going to take time to figure out, just as everything else that’s been happening for the last few months,'' said Roxanne Broda-Blake, general manager of Recess Coffee, at 110 Harvard Place just off Westcott. “We’re definitely ready for people to come in, when they’re ready.”
Honora Eskridge and her husband, Toye, came to Syracuse from their home in Nashville to visit her sister, Maggie Iribarne of DeWitt. They sat on Recess’ front porch instead of inside. After all, it was a nice morning.
The Eskridges said they’ve noticed a slow and cautious embrace of returning to restaurant dining and eating out in Nashville, which opened that phase up several weeks ago. So the absence of people dining in today didn’t surprise them.
“It’s like one step forward and one step back,” Honora Eskridge said.
“It’s like a dance,” Iribarne agreed.
