His ceiling? The Joe Burrow of the 2021 NFL Draft. Can Syracuse football QB Tommy DeVito be the best thing? Well, according to Yahoo Sports, don’t rule him out from a breakout year in 2020. Eric Edholm, the lead NFL Draft analyst at Yahoo Sports, listed Tommy DeVito in the ‘Others of note’ category in a recent article speculating the next Joe Burrow of the 2021 NFL Draft. Brock Purdy, Kellen Mond, D’Eriq King, and a few others were the main selections who Edholm highlighted in his article. However, it’s notable that the SU signal-caller was placed in the article, to begin with. This shows his potential is still there, and especially that even after a so-so 2019, college football experts haven’t totally written him off yet. While Edholm didn’t go into depth about the DeVito selection as an honorable mention, that’s where we come in. For starters, I totally agree with this selection and placement. DeVito absolutely deserves to be on this list. While he and the Orange didn’t live up to full expectations, his 19 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and over 2,300 passing yards showed a player with a strong arm, who just needs to limit mistakes. Some of those mistakes weren’t all of DeVito’s fault. The Syracuse football offensive line was dismal last season, something that the ‘Cuse needs to fix. It goes without saying that even a decent O-Line can keep the Orange competitive in 2020, but given DeVito is a pocket passer, it becomes that much more important. CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister first reported this news, which Stritzinger then confirmed via his Twitter page. Although Stritzinger is a reserve safety, per his bio on cuse.com, his potential departure from Central New York would decrease the Orange’s depth on defense. The 6-foot, 194-pound Stritzinger, who is entering his senior campaign, has competed in 29 games, with one start, over three seasons. Stritzinger, after spending his freshman stint at running back, switched to defense in 2018. In 20 contests over the past two stanzas on the defensive side, he has registered 27 tackles (14 solo) and four passes defended, including one interception. But for the third straight season, the two teams will face off in a non-conference battle, pitting the ACC against the MAC. To be fair, the Broncos’ coaching staff does have ties to Syracuse, as Western Michigan Head Coach Tim Lester was once the offensive coordinator for the Orange. Clearly, there’s been no bad blood – and quite the opposite really – as the two sides have created a recent partnership, playing every year since 2018. Cuse will look to make it three consecutive wins against Western Michigan, as the Orange defeated the Broncos 55-42 in 2018, followed by a 52-33 win last season. If anything can be counted on, it’s that scoring will be plentiful – so much so that the winning team may need to put up at least 40 points to feel safe. The Broncos finished 7-6 last season, appearing in a bowl game for the second straight season. They’re set to lose three-year starter Jon Wassink, which in itself points to a potential rough start to the season for WMU.
