Welcome to National Onion Rings Day!

The origin of the onion rings is actually somewhat mysterious, but we do know that in 1802 a recipe was published in ”The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined.” This recipe describes a process of dipping ½” onion rings dipped into a rather flavorful mixture of flour with creams and cheeses and then boiling them in a vat of lard. Following on the heels of this was a suggestion to serve it with a sauce made of a mixture of mustard and butter.

Countdown to College Football Kickoff: Top NFL prospects at Syracuse (SI; Rang)

College football is scheduled to return Saturday, August 29. Each day until then, NFLDraftScout.com will be evaluating the rosters of the best teams in college football, including all 64 within the Power Five conferences.

Syracuse Orangemen

Head Coach: Dino Babers (fifth season)

2019 Record: 5-7

2020 NFL Draft Picks: Alton Robinson, DE, Seattle Seahawks – 5th Round, No. 148 overall

Sterling Hofrichter, P, Atlanta Falcons – 7th Round, No. 228 overall

Overview:

Fresh off of a 10-3 campaign which tied as the best record at Syracuse since their undefeated season back in 1987, the Orangemen stumbled in 2019, falling back to 5-7 and out of postgame contention for the third time in head coach Dino Babers’ four years at the helm.

Though Syracuse lost just one player to the NFL’s 2018 NFL draft (seventh round defensive tackle Chris Slayton, NYG), most expected a drop on the offensive side of the ball as the team lost gutty dual-threat quarterback Eric Dungey to graduation. Dungey led the Orangemen in both passing (18) and rushing (15) touchdowns in 2018, numbers that 2019 starter Tommy DeVito was able to exceed as a thrower (19 touchdowns), but not as a runner (two scores), dramatically changing the Syracuse offense.

The pass rush also took a major step back with edge defenders Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman dropping to four sacks apiece in 2019 after tying the previous year, as well, but with 10 quarterback takedowns each. The Orange, in fact, dropped nearly a full third of their sacks from the 2018 to 2019 season, finishing with just 30 this past season, tying them with the likes of North Texas, Central Michigan and Navy after ranking among FBS leaders with 44 sacks a year earlier.

LAMSON LEGEND AT OAK RIDGE

Lamson, only a junior, looked the part of the region’s next promising quarterback talent. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Lamson has a strong arm to go with strong legs, making him a dangerous duel threat. Oak Ridge coaches were high on him a year ago when he was a backup.

He passed for 3,114 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for 462 and five scores for an 11-3 team. He had a late-season win over Harris and Elk Grove and then engineered a 3-0 section run, punctuated by 35-27 win over Monterey Trail and Jones in the driving rain at Hughes Stadium to decide the D-I championship. Lamson carried a career-high 24 times for a career-best 129 yards and three touchdowns to steer Oak Ridge, and then he celebrated in the wind and rain.

Lamson embraced his role in all seasons.

“I try to set a good example, but I never wanted to overthink it and get in my own head,” he said. “I feel I’ve worked hard and that I can lead the guys and that they feel they can win with me.”

Class of 2021 defensive lineman

Robert Jackson
out of Archbishop Wood High School (PA) announced his top 10 list of schools on Sunday and Rutgers made the cut.

The Scarlet Knights were among the list of his top 10 schools, joining Arizona State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Jackson visited Piscataway for a quick unofficial visit in early March before the NCAA dead period was put into place because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

"It was a great experience," Jackson said. "I got a tour (of campus and the facilities) and got to talk to a lot of the staff. I pretty much spoke to all of the coaches. They were just telling me about the program. Overall Rutgers is a great schools with a nice atmosphere and real genuine people.”

The 2021 defensive lineman is still pretty new to the game of football as this past season was only his first ever playing football, as his primary focus before was mainly basketball.

Stay tuned for more on Jackson and other 2021 RFootball recruiting targets right here on The Knight Report!

Syracuse Football: Pat Stark won 1959 title, scored 78 in high school (itlh; Adler)

Pat Stark, a member of the coaching staff when Syracuse football captured the 1959 NCAA championship, has passed away.

Pat Stark leaves an indelible mark on Syracuse football and collegiate sports throughout Upstate New York that will never waver.

Stark, who passed away on June 19 at the age of 90, served as the quarterback of the Orange from 1951 to 1953, helping the ‘Cuse to its first bowl bid in 1953.

He also suited up for Syracuse basketball for two years, and Stark was the team’s starting guard during his junior term, according to orangehoops.org.

At Vocational High School in Syracuse, Stark earned all-state honors in hoops, football and baseball. He set a New York state record when Stark accumulated a ridiculous 78 points in an 86-16 victory versus Smith Tech in 1949, per his bio on the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame Web site. By the way, Stark got enshrined into that Hall of Fame in 1995.

As the quarterback for the ‘Cuse, he played a critical role in the team going to the 1953 Orange Bowl, where Syracuse unfortunately got crushed by Bart Starr-led Alabama. The Hall of Fame says that Stark finished his tenure on the Hill with 2,116 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, and the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the second round.

Louisville Football: Class changing commit on the horizon? (BRL; Stengel)

Louisville football staff chasing major commitment.

I’m not sure how many times it needs to be mentioned, but Scott Satterfield and the Louisville football staff might be pretty decent at this whole recruiting thing.

Gone are the voices of concern with the recruiting challenges a tenured mid-major coach might face in the big bad power five landscape. Satterfield’s wildly successful first season turning around Louisville Football has continued off the field, even in the midst of an extremely challenging offseason. In the last few weeks, Louisville has landed multiple commitments, including cornerbacks Kani Walker & Derrick Edwards along with athletic offensive lineman, Michael Gonzalez, to add to an already impressive haul.

Even with the Cards 2021 recruiting class currently sitting fourth in ACC and 18th nationally, they are still on the hunt for one class-changing commitment. However, that might not be as far off as we think.

Syracuse Football: 2023 QB Drew Viotto has stellar size and arm strength (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football is getting involved early on with promising 2023 pro-style quarterback Drew Viotto.

Drew Viotto is only a rising sophomore from the greater Detroit area, yet Syracuse football has already begun its pursuit of the pro-style quarterback.

Orange coaches recently offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Viotto, a 2023 prospect who currently attends Walled Lake Western High School in Walled Lake, Mich.

At present, he holds other offers from Bowling Green and Central Michigan, according to Viotto’s bios on the 247Sports Web site and .

He’s not rated at this juncture by either recruiting service, but that is at least partly because those two Web sites don’t have their rankings up for 2023 high-school players.

After a great talk with @CoachReynolds81 I’m Very excited & honored to receive my first ACC Offer from Syracuse University. @CuseFootball @CoachBabersCuse @QuarterbackUniv @WLW_WarriorsFB @AllenTrieu @JoshHelmholdt @nexgenscouting
— Drew Viotto (@ViottoDrew) June 17, 2020
On qbhitlist.com, a recruiting Web site that focuses solely on evaluating and ranking quarterbacks, Viotto is slotted as two stars for the moment.

Don't mess this up for everybody!

With about 10 weeks until football season, things are not looking good on the Coronavirus statistics:
Wrong direction for #CFB. Especially in @SEC country.
— 2-Minute Drillfield (@HunkerDownHokie) June 19, 2020
On most of these graphs you can really see where the curve was "flattened" by the "stay at home" orders... but, sadly, how the number of cases has skyrocketed since those restrictions were lifted (oddly, North Carolina never flattened - it just kept growing).

The fear is that this is going to be more common, if not worse:

23 of Clemson's 104 football players have tested positive for COVID-19. Those players will quarantine and voluntary workouts will continue as scheduled. Source: 23 Clemson football players test positive for...

POLL: How many MUST Miami win?

Follow-up on 2020 Hot Seats: What is the MINIMUM number of wins that keeps Miami Head Coach Manny Diaz off the hot seat? Is 8 good enough for now? 9? 10? Will Manny be shown the door if he only wins 7? what about 6? Ultimately, Miami boosters and administrators are really the only opinions that count here, but I'm asking everyone: what's the number? Please take a moment to give you answer in this poll...

With no students, college town Ithaca worries about future (PS; AP)

What happens to a college town when the students disappear? Ithaca, a small upstate New York city nearby gorges and vineyards, is finding out.

Most of the 24,000 students at Cornell University and 6,200 more from Ithaca College effectively vanished in March when the coronavirus pandemic struck, leaving behind struggling restaurants and shops. Locals still reeling from the outbreak and resulting exodus are wondering when — or if — things will get back to normal.

“It’s going to be hard. I mean, normally we have about seven months that the colleges are here,” said Gregar Brous, who runs the local Collegetown Bagels shops, other restaurants and a catering operation. He has brought back just over 100 of the 330 employees he laid off, but the long-term fate of college-dependent businesses remain cloudy.

“One of the biggest challenges right now is so many unknowns,” Brous said.

Ithaca College intends to bring students back this fall, but weeks later than normal on Oct. 5. Cornell — the Ivy League school that dominates this city of 31,000 — is offering its summer courses online and expected to release its plans for the fall semester soon.

Even if Cornell opts for a return to in-class instruction as locals expect, they're concerned about returning students holing up on campus more, or an autumn surge in COVID-19 cases sparking another sudden exit. Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick said possible international travel restrictions could affect Cornell, where almost a quarter of the students come from other countries.

“If people don’t feel comfortable sending their children across the country or across the world back to our campuses, then we’ll start to shed jobs,” said Myrick.

Cornell students spend an estimated $225 million annually, helping fuel a healthy retail economy highlighted by blocks of funky shops and restaurants on the Ithaca Commons, a pedestrian strip downhill from the sprawling Cornell campus.

“If you’re a line cook or a server in Ithaca before the pandemic … it was so easy to get a job. You couldn’t avoid it, they were everywhere,” said Matt Stupak, a laid-off line cook now working a part-time delivery job with partial unemployment.

This makes it sound like most of the campus left town, that was never true. Kids had leases and new one started and there are kids all over town right now.. They just dont have as many things to do.
