Welcome to Color TV Day!

The "GE Years' in Liverpool changed the village, and Central New York with a new-style manufacturing facility and lifestyle changes for the whole region.

On August 24, 1944, General Electric executives came to a dinner at Syracuse's Hotel Syracuse, and, in the Imperial Ballroom, announced they;d be building a big new facility just north of the City of Syracuse.

The 155 acre site, named Electronics Park, was farm and forest land near the under-construction State Thruway. Grading and clearing began in October, but was stopped two weeks later by an early winter blizzard.
The first building, the powerhouse, went up in 1946 and first television set production started in 1958. In the early 1950s, picture tube production was relocated to the Liverpool complex from Buffalo, which meant TV sets were completely produced at Electronics Park.

GE could not keep up with demand for television sets: assembly lines were turning out 120 an hour, and the company had estimated it would need a work force of about six thousand. Instead they went to a 3-shift, 24x7 operation that saw 20,000 workers in the peak years.

Mike Midkiff sits on benchpress in Syracuse University athletics gym

A Family Connection Leads to a Continued Tradition of Football and Service - Syracuse.edu (syracuse.edu)

ROTC cadet and walk-on long snapper Mike Midkiff appreciates the support he’s received as he integrates athletics with service to his country.

Mike Midkiff was raised in a military family and hopes to commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after completing his undergraduate degree, joining two immediate family members on active duty.

Mike Midkiff is a walk-on long snapper on Syracuse University’s football team. His father, Lt. Col. Stephen Midkiff Jr., serves in the U.S. Army. Like many children of active duty service members, Midkiff had to move every few years when he was growing up. He rattles off the states where he’s lived: Georgia, Colorado, Missouri, Maryland, then back to Colorado. As he grew older, leaving the people he’d met became more difficult. “Going to a new school, the kids there may have been with each other their entire life,” Midkiff says.

“Relocating forced me to create a lot of new relationships, meet people from different backgrounds.” He learned how to quickly build the bonds that grow out of playing a team sport, proving himself through action rather than familiarity. “It's one of those things where complaining doesn't help,” he says. “I just put my head down and worked.”

One could say football is a family tradition. Midkiff’s father played at Ball State University, as did his grandfather, who was a member of the undefeated 1965 Ball State football team. Playing football in high school, Midkiff was a wide receiver and defensive back. During his sophomore year, his father suggested he pick up a new skill that would increase his chance of getting on the field: long snapping. “Growing up, my dad was also a long snapper, along with playing linebacker,” Midkiff says.

Position Breakdown: Tight Ends — 2020 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re taking a look at the tight ends, which is a deep, versatile and talented unit.

WHO’S OUT

  • Ben Honis: Honis was an All-American wrestler at nearby Cornell before transferring to Syracuse for his final season of eligibility. He appeared in nine games as a special teams player, and logged a tackle against NC State.
PROJECTED STARTERS
  • Aaron Hackett: In his junior season, Hackett was named the team’s most improved player, appearing in 12 games and starting six of them. He established himself as a reliable target, hauling in 23 receptions for 205 yards, while finishing second on the team with six touchdown catches.
  • Chris Elmore: Elmore is as versatile a player as the Orange has on its roster. Elmore started five games at tight end (appearing in all 12) in 2019, but has also played in the backfield in his career (28 carries for 65 yards) and even on defense, logging 76 snaps as a defensive lineman.
WHO’S BACKING THEM UP
  • Luke Benson: Benson earned third-team freshman All-America honors from Pro Football Focus after catching eight passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He appeared in all 12 games as a true freshman, logging two starts and netted a 70-yard touchdown catch against Holy Cross that was SU’s longest by a tight end since John Mackey in 1961.
  • Jesse Conners: Injuries have derailed Conners’ collegiate career to date. He redshirted his freshman year at Holy Cross and then sat out a second year because of transfer rules. The last two seasons, Conners has been hurt.
  • Zack Lesko: Lesko, also a transfer (via Chattanooga) has had a similar trajectory. He didn’t play the first two years of his career because of redshirting and transfer rules, but did make his collegiate debut against Western Michigan. He suffered an injury in that game and didn’t play the rest of the year.

Syracuse football continues to recruit defensive ends, eyeing another in 2021 (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Syracuse football has been known mostly for offensive production since Head Coach Dino Babers arrived in town. Recent recruiting trends point at defense.

Almost as soon as Class of 2021 three-star defensive end, Robert Jackson put Syracuse football in his top ten, the Orange hit the market again. This time, it was another three-star rated DE in Cole Nelson.

Nelson, who is given the three stars by Rivals, is a strongside DE from Johns Creek, Georgia. According to his Rivals profile, he’s also been offered by schools such as Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and Boston College, among others. The Syracuse offer fits right in with those competitors – an east coast school with a good football program – but with a better chance of playing sooner rather than later.

Nelson announced the offer from Syracuse via his Twitter page, saying that Syracuse football assistant coach Vince Reynolds is his primary recruiter.

After a good talk with @CoachReynolds81 I am blessed and honored to say I have EARNED an offer from THE Syracuse University @RecruitGeorgia @ChadSimmons_ @CuseCoachTW @JohnsCreekHSFB @FBCoach_JH @mwhsports3838

— Cole Nelson (@Col3DN_03) June 22, 2020

The defensive line as a whole has been a hot commodity for the Orange as of late. NFL prospects such as Zaire Franklin and Alton Robinson have worn the Syracuse jersey, while All-Pro DE Chandler Jones continues to rep his alma mater, proudly completing his graduation requirements in May.

The Nelson offer speaks volumes about what Syracuse is looking for in their defense. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, he is a big body with the potential to add even more muscle and really fit in on the SU D-line. However, more than this, he is an example of the type of prospects Syracuse recruits. The Orange don’t settle for anything, making sure they bring in talented players filled with potential.

Syracuse football adds Wagner to 2022 schedule (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Syracuse football has completed its 2022 non-conference schedule with the addition of the Wagner Seahawks. Here’s why this game is a solid fit for the Cuse.

We haven’t even begun the 2020 college football season and Syracuse football is already focusing on 2022. No, not really, because Tommy DeVito and co are primed for what should be a fantastic season this year. However, knowing that two years down the road is set is a good feeling for any program.

This Wagner game, in particular, adds a nice balance to the rest of the Orange 2022 non-conference slate. According to cuse.com, Syracuse will also host Purdue and Notre Dame, to go along with a road game against Connecticut.

To have home games against a Big Ten school in Purdue and one of most nationally renowned programs in Notre Dame is a blessing. Not only does it create intrigue for the season at hand, but it will also help in recruiting, ticket sales, and future scheduling.

The road game against UConn is the first of a small series between the former rivals. It’s always key for teams to keep old rivalries in check, and it’s not a bad idea to schedule a game with a weaker team in Connecticut, as games against Purdue and Notre Dame already make the Syracuse non-conference schedule in tip-top shape.

Finally, the Wagner game pairs well with UConn to balance out everything. It’ll be a home game for Syracuse football, likely the last non-conference match-up before the daunting ACC play starts. The Notre Dame game is currently TBD, meaning it could be the week of September 3rd, but it could also be in the mix of the ACC schedule.

Nonetheless, Wagner creates a game where Syracuse can work on anything needed to fine-tune before the ACC. As an FCS team, the Orange still need to respect them, but there will be a talent disparity between the two ball clubs. With this being said, it’ll be interesting to see two in-state squads go at it, regardless of level.

Best non-Tiger 2020 ACC Position Groups (RX; HM)

Best non-Tiger 2020 ACC Position Groups

OK, for five years now the Clemson Tigers have owned ACC football, and from the preseason point of view 2020 looks no different. However, there are some teams with really good position groups out there - maybe not as talented as Clemson overall, but enough to put up a pretty good fight, maybe!

Best ACC position groups (outside of Clemson)
OFFENSE:
QB - UNC (Sam Howell)
RB - UNC (Michael Carter, Javonte Williams)
WR - UNC (Dyami Brown, Dazz Newsome,
TE - Miami (Brevin Jordan)
OL - Boston College (Ben Petrula, Tyler Vrabel, Alec Lindstrom, Zion Johnson)

DEFENSE:
S - Pitt (Paris Ford, Damar Hamlin)
CB - Virginia Tech (Caleb Farley, Jermaine Waller, Chamarri Conner)
LB - Virginia Tech (Rayshard Ashby, Dax Hollifield)

Links, news and rumors - 6/25/20

Today we have the most overrated and most underrated teams, plus some philosophical questions about the new Mayonnaise Bowl...

From SaturdayBlitz:

Most overrated college football team in each Power 5 conference for 2020
Every single year, certain teams are given undue praise...

ACC: Miami Hurricanes
I thought I’d just get this one out of the way early. Compared to most years, I wouldn’t actually say that Miami is that overrated. I mean, they’re overrated, but nobody thinks they’ll be a top 10 team or anything. At least I hope not.

But for some reason, Miami is still seen as a team that could win nine or 10 games, despite the program having taken somewhat of a nose dive the past 15 years. Miami has won double-digit games just one single time since 2003 and the 2019 squad looked a long way from that.

They have a 13-13 record the past two seasons and no signs point to the fact that they’ll win any more than seven games this year. None of this matters though, since Clemson would probably trash them as soon as they made it to the ACC Championship Game.

Big 12: Oklahoma State Cowboys
SEC: Florida Gators
Pac-12: Utah Utes
Big Ten: Nebraska Cornhuskers
Yeah, that sounds about right.
__________

From CBS Sports' "Most undervalued Power Five teams entering the 2020 season"

ACC: Pitt
Odds to win ACC Championship: +3000

Why it's undervalued: Chalk it up to the mush that is the ACC Coastal race. Still, there's trendy pick out of that division every year and it's never been Pitt since coach Pat Narduzzi arrived five years ago. The Panthers have perpetually been picked by ACC media in the preseason to finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. Lower expectations don't typically yield disappointments, but not once in the past five years has Pitt finished below their preseason slotting; in fact, Pitt won the Coastal just two seasons ago after being picked fifth. With Miami, North Carolina and perhaps even Virginia Tech the likely preseason go-to choices for the Coastal crown, Pitt once again will probably find itself fourth-ish when this year's polling is released.

Boston College football prioritizing health in return to campus (bostonherald.com; Hewitt)

The Boston College football team is taking as little risk as possible as it gets back to work during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The NCAA’s decision in May to allow athletes in all sports to return to campus for voluntary workouts starting June 1 let schools and programs individually choose when they wanted to come back. A number of schools, like Clemson and LSU, returned earlier in the month and reported a number of positive COVID-19 cases.

BC, though, has taken more time as new coach Jeff Hafley and his program sort out the new reality.

“The No. 1 deal for us is making sure our players are safe and healthy before we do any football,” Hafley said on a Zoom call Wednesday.

The Eagles returned to campus on Monday, making football the first sport at BC to come back since the pandemic began. In conjunction with safety guidelines set by the state and the city of Boston, they’re adhering to a COVID-19 operational plan they hope is a path to beginning voluntary workouts in the near future.

Hafley said that every player who was expected to return on Monday did so, and the team has begun a quarantine period with every player isolated that will last at least eight days, at which point players will be tested for COVID-19. With in-person athletic activities banned by the NCAA until at least June 30, the hope is that by July 1, the Eagles can begin activities in some form.

“We really feel like we picked a great time, because if we get through this quarantine and get to July 1, it really gives us two months to get ready (for the season),” Hafley said. “I think that’s a good amount of time, I think it’s a fair amount of time. That’s more time than you get if you just came back for training camp.

“Now, you lose the time because you didn’t have spring football, but I think we picked a really good time. I think we waited to make sure we were ready and prepared. We didn’t want to rush back into it and we wanted to have a plan.”

Upon returning, the players came together for a socially-distanced team meeting, which Hafley said excited him. But until further notice, the team’s primary mode of communication will be through Zoom. On Wednesday morning, former BC football player Mark Herzlich came on to address the team as part of Hafley’s ongoing effort to keep the school’s alumni involved with the program.

Clemson Football: 5 teams the ACC absolutely needs to consider adding (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

Five teams Clemson football would love to see added to the ACC

The Clemson football program has absolutely dominated the ACC over the past half-decade, winning five-straight ACC Championships.

The Tigers have gone a combined a 43-2 against ACC opponents in the last five seasons and that has led to quite a bit of success extending to outside of the conference.

While the ACC is seemingly on the rise with programs beginning to recruit at a higher level and new coaches implementing winning cultures, there is always room for improvement.

As we continue to approach the age of conference realignment, here are five teams Clemson football fans would absolutely love to see added to the ACC.

5. Appalachian State

Appalachian State may seem like a small program, but the Mountaineers have been nothing but successful during their FCS run and vault into the FBS.

4. Memphis

Memphis is a little further west than the Atlantic Coast Conference may want to include, but one can’t deny the prominence and promise of the Memphis football program.

Memphis currently plays in the American Athletic Conference and the Tigers have been consistently competing at the top of that conference for a while now.

Making a trip to a beautiful and historical portion of Tennessee wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for Clemson football fans and there’s certainly a chance that Memphis could continue to be a consistent top-25 program, especially with Power-5 appeal.

3. UCF

Clemson football: Three Tigers that will make the All-ACC team for the first time in 2020 (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

for gbo

Once again, Clemson football is expected to dominate the ACC in 2020.

By now, this is not a new proclamation about Clemson football. However, it is nice to be at the point that the Tigers are finally given some respect. For most of the last five years, FSU was still the preseason ACC pick by most prognosticators.

In 2019, Clemson football placed 16 different players on all three teams of the All-ACC team and six of them return for the 2020 college football season –Jackson Carman, Tyler Davis, Derion Kendrick, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and Nyles Pinckney.

Only Lawrence and Etienne are the returning first-team All-ACC picks for the Tigers. Kendrick and Davis were named to the All-ACC second team and Carman and Pinckney were named to the third team. More than likely, you will see all six of them on the 2020 All-ACC first team.

That said, there are three Tigers that will make the All-ACC team at the end of the 2020 season that were not 2019 selections. Two of these will be seniors making an All-ACC team for the first time.

Not only does show how incredibly deep that Clemson football has become but that also shows just how well the Tigers coaching staff recruits and develops.

Jamie Newman posted a new workout video and he looks fired up to lead Georgia’s offense (fansided.com; Perez)

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jamie Newman looks fantastic in new workout video

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but Georgia football fans can’t wait for the 2020 season and fall camp to arrive.

After spring ball was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Bulldogs Nation has had to wait longer than expected to see what the 2020 squad will be able to do together.

Well, if you need to fill your fix, quarterback Jamie Newman has certainly delivered in that department. The grad transfer signal-caller from Wake Forest has been working out like a mad man this offseason, showcasing his arm strength in an awesome new workout clip.

Jamie Newman looks ready to take the SEC by storm with the Bulldogs

Not only does Newman sling the ball around, but he’s looking pretty darn jacked these days as well. Good luck to defensive linemen or linebackers who think Newman will go down with an arm tackle. Nope, you’re going to need to bring your best effort every single time to try and get the Georgia quarterback to the ground.

Restarting NY: What’s open, what’s closed in phase four (PS; Breidenbach)

On Friday, Central New York is set to begin phase four of New York’s plan to restart businesses after the coronavirus shutdown in March.

The fourth phase is focused on arts and entertainment venues and higher education.

At this point, there is no phase five. It is clear, however, that the state still has a long way to go to bring business back to full throttle in New York state. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said health officials are still evaluating the risks of opening shopping malls, movie theaters, casinos and gyms — large, enclosed, air-conditioned spaces.

Destiny USA remains closed, unless a store has its own entrance.

Businesses that opened in the first three phases have pages of restrictions that still apply. Those restrictions are lifted only when the governor amends or rescinds them, not when the region enters a new phase.

The limit on gatherings has been increased from 25 to 50 people, Cuomo said Wednesday.

In-person religious services have been increased from 25% to 33% of the capacity of the space.

Here is what’s open and what’s still closed starting Friday:

First, here are the newest businesses to open in phase four. These places are considered low-risk arts and entertainment venues. They are required to limit visitors and workers to 33% of the capacity of the space.

Outdoor zoos
Botanical gardens
Nature parks
Grounds of historic sites and cultural institutions
Outdoor museums
Outdoor agritourism/agricultural demonstrations
Indoor museums
Historical sites
Aquariums
Art galleries
Film companies are allowed to start making movies.
...

also allows for a couple weeks of teams to be in isolation if need be to get some players healthy for many reasons.

Trill and Iffy have a lot to prove this fall, and I think they’re up to the task.

It may be Color TV Day, but Arby's says it's also World UFO Day - which is far more interesting! This is what they say about it:

It's World UFO Day. What does that have to do with Arby's? Nothing, really. We just wanted to make some alien themed gear. It’s the Area 51 Collection, and it’s out of this world.
