Welcome to Chocolate Day!

Chocolate Day celebrates chocolate, the sweet treat that is made from the cocoa bean. The holiday takes place on what some accounts say is the anniversary of when chocolate was introduced in Europe, in 1550. There are various chocolate days throughout the year, and this one is also commonly known as World Chocolate Day, and sometimes as International Chocolate Day.

Chocolate comes from a bean called Theobroma cacao. The word "chocolate" itself comes from the Spanish, and it stems from the Aztec word xocolatl, which means "bitter water". The Aztecs pounded the cacao beans and drank them without adding any sugar, and they thought the beans came from the gods. Indeed, Theobroma means "food of the gods". Cocoa beans are about 50% "cocoa butter" and 50% "chocolate liquor". Hernando Cortés brought cocoa beans back to Spain, and a chocolate drink that included sugar became popular right away. This seems to contradict the accounts that say chocolate wasn't introduced in Europe until 1550. The word "chocolate" first appeared in print, in England, in 1604.

SU commit Wes Hoeh ‘plays offensive line with a defensive mentality' (PS; Bailey)

Wes Hoeh opened his junior season at Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) High School matching up against one of the best players in Illinois.

Hoeh battled against Maine South’s Peter Skoronski, a four-star prospect and the No. 112 overall recruit in the 2020 class, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. And Hoeh more than held his own despite a roughly 40-pound weight differential.

“We rushed for 460 yards, and Wes matched up with Peter most of the game and did an outstanding job,” Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlet said. “For us, that was a big, big deal for us to have a guy who dominated a player that highly recruited.

“Wes didn’t back down one play and that’s maybe the thing that makes me most proud of him.”

SU football’s phase 2 adds include most of 2020 signees; 4 international players absent (PS; Bailey)

The majority of Syracuse football’s 2020 signing class has officially joined the program for phase two of the team’s summer workouts.

Only Canadians Damien Alford and Ben Labrosse have yet to arrive, according to an SU Athletics spokesperson, as “they are still working through their home country’s process of transitioning to school in the U.S.” That means 16 prospects have joined the five who enrolled in January.

Here’s the full list: DB Robert Hanna, TE Steven Mahar, RB Sean Tucker, OL Garth Barclay, RB Marlowe Wax, ATH Justin Barron, DB Ja’Had Carter, DE Kevin Lemieux, WR Trebor Pena, DE Leon Lowery, LB Anwar Sparrow, OL Josh Ilaoa, DB Chase Atkinson, QB Dillon Markiewicz, P James Williams, QB JaCobian Morgan.

Cody Roscoe, a defensive end transfer from McNeese State, is also among the Orange’s roughly 20 additions for phase two, which started on Thursday.

Syracuse Football: Duce Chestnut would give Orange first 2021 four-star (itlh; Adler)

Duce Chestnut, an elite cornerback in the 2021 recruiting cycle, has listed eight finalists including Syracuse football.

Over the last few days, Syracuse football has picked up a pair of three-star players for its 2021 class, and now the Orange has its sights set on four-star cornerback Duce Chestnut.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Chestnut, a rising senior at Camden High School in Camden, N.J., revealed his top eight on July 4, and the schools are the ‘Cuse, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Kansas, Louisville and Rutgers.

That’s a pretty diverse group of contenders, with Syracuse stacking up against several Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten Conference squads, along with the SEC’s Ole Miss and Kansas out of the Big 12 Conference.

At this juncture, I’m not seeing any particular favorite for Chestnut’s services among recruiting analysts, and he told 247Sports’ Brian Dohn that his collegiate decision will come “when it feels right.”

Clemson football: Latest mock draft has four Tigers in Top 50 picks (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

Clemson football is loaded with NFL talent for 2020 and several of them are expected to hear their names called in the first two rounds in 2021.

The 2020 Clemson football team is by far the most talented team that the Tigers have ever assembled. According to USA Today, they are the eighth-most talented team in the country. Alabama, Ohio State, UGA, Penn State, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Michigan are allegedly more talented

During head coach, Dabo Swinney’s time at the helm of the Tigers, NFL scouts, general managers, and coaches have spent a lot of time on campus getting to know the stars of college football.

With all the talent on this roster, there are four that are expected to hear their names called in the firsts 50 picks of the 2021 NFL draft.

NFL Draftwire, which is run by USA Today, released its latest mock draft and they believe that three Clemson players will be taken in the first round and a fourth will go in the middle of the third round. While the names are the players we all know will be drafted, their landing spots are much different than we have seen previously.

ACCN Bias? Looks like it... (RX; HM)

ACCN Bias? Looks like it...

ACCN Bias? Maybe so. In the past we've pointed out how ESPN's coverage has indicated an apparent bias in favor of SEC teams over teams from other conferences - one reason we were so happy to see the launch of the ACC Network! Now, sadly, we are seeing evidence of bias within the ACCN as well, as pointed out by this tweet...
This upcoming week on @accnetwork. List below is the frequency of times each ACC team is shown.

Packer and Durham 17
UNC 15
Duke 10
FSU 8
UVA 8
Clemson 7
GT 7
ND 6
Pitt 5
Syr 5
WF 5
Louisville 4
VT 4
NCSU 3
Miami 2
BC 2

Not a surprising distribution unfortunately.

247Sports Media Days: ACC preseason poll (247sports.com; Marcello)

247Sports is home to an array of websites covering college football, and behind those publications are reporters with deep-rooted knowledge of the teams and conferences they cover day to day.

"Talking Season" heats up just as the temperature begins to climb in July. It's when prognostications across the country gain steam as we gear up for college football and the annual trek to hotel meetings rooms across the country for conference media days. This year is different as Power 5 conferences move to virtual-only setups for its annual Media Days events, and while it might be a strange time, that doesn't change the desire for predictions and storytellers.

Before the Power 5 conferences conduct their virtual Media Days in late July, 247Sports gathered experts across its vast network and conducted polls within each Power 5 conference to get a better idea of how the season might transpire.

Why? Why not? These reporters are intertwined with the day-to-day newsmakers on the ground, and have the best vantage point of the teams and conferences they cover across the country. Why wait for the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC to hand out ballots in late July or August when 247Sports has experts on the ground at nearly every one of the 65 schools in the Power 5?

This week we unveil the predictions of dozens of nearly five dozen beat writers across the country. Each day this week is devoted to a different Power 5 conference. Think of it as a preseason tailgate before the conferences gather coaches, players and writers for interviews and the release of their annual preseason polls. This is your first taste of football. This is 247Sports Media Days.

Today we start with the ACC's predicted order-of-finish, player of the year, the conference champion and the storylines selected by 247Sports' 14-person panel spread across the East Coast.

Note: First-place votes received seven points, second-place votes received six points, etc.

Early ACC Coastal football thoughts: How to slot the ‘Hoos in 2020 race? (augustafreepress.com)

When the ACC announced in 2017 that it was scheduling Virginia for the Labor Day night national TV showcase, I remember thinking, John Swofford must know something that the rest of us don’t.

Think back to when the announcement was made. This wasn’t after the 2018 season, which ended with UVA notching its first bowl win in more than a decade, or after the 2017 season, which ended with a thud, sure, but at least the thud was a bowl game, the first postseason appearance for the ‘Hoos in six years.

It was after the 2016 season, the one that started with a blowout loss at home to Richmond, and ended with a 2-10 record.

Two and ten was the prelude to Virginia-Georgia on Labor Day night three years hence.

The ACC, surely, didn’t want to book a squash match for the SEC, but there was a lot of work that would need to be done to have anybody think that Virginia could field a team that would keep TV viewers tuned in even to halftime.

Turns out that Swofford might just know his football.

Virginia, as you know, is coming off a one-score loss to another SEC power, Florida, in the 2019 Orange Bowl, after winning the program’s first ACC Coastal Division title, clinching that deal with the first win over in-state rival Virginia Tech since 2003.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall, miracle worker that he has proven himself to be, has some work to do to get his team back up that level in 2020, given the loss of all-everything QB Bryce Perkins (3,530 yards, 22 TDs passing, 769 yards, 11 TDs rushing in 2019), and top wideouts Hasise Dubois (1,062 yards receiving) and Joe Reed (679 yards receiving, 796 yards on kick returns).

The QB1 battle between two-year backup Brennan Armstrong and Mississippi State transfer Keytaon Thompson should be interesting, but the important thing will be depth in that room.

The passing game should be fine, with senior Terrell Jana (878 yards in 2019) surrounded by young talents (Billy Kemp, Tavares Kelly, Dontayvion Wicks) who will have to step up.

The running game should be a point of focus, with depth and experience on the offensive line, and the continued growth of tailback Wayne Taulapapa (473 yards, 12 rushing TDs in 2019), one of the conference’s best goal-line backs a year ago.

The defense, banged up down the stretch in 2019, returns a ton of talent and experience, and should be among the best in the ACC in getting pressure on the quarterback again this fall.

Top contenders in the Coastal

North Carolina fans will tell you, hey, we were 7-6 last season, but it could have easily been 10-3 or 11-2, with three losses by three points or less, and three others within a touchdown.

OK, but it could have also been 3-9, with three of the wins by four or less

Dinosaur BBQ, Destiny USA, more: Which Syracuse-area companies got the most PPP money? (PS; Baker)

Dinosaur. Stickley. Bond, Schoeneck & King.

Many of Syracuse’s best-known businesses were among the largest recipients of federal coronavirus stimulus money, according to data released Monday by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Barclay Damon law firm, Stickley furniture, Bond, Schoeneck and King law firm and Frayser Quality LLC (an affiliate of Carrols, which operates Burger King and Popeye’s franchises) were among 18 businesses and non-for-profits to receive between $5 million and $10 million each from the Paycheck Protection Program.

Destiny USA also received several million dollars.

The money is technically a loan, but most of it can be forgiven if the money is used on payroll costs. That means it is intended to go directly to workers. The money also was directed exclusively at companies with fewer than 500 employees.

The loan application asked organizations to say how many jobs they would retain if they got federal money.

Those 18 Central New York companies with the biggest loans pledged to use the money to retain 7,491 jobs.

I think it's gotten better recently. They've shown some of our old BE games and there was a PItt game from 2003 on last night or the night before.

This is really glaring to me.

1186 to Omaha: 2015 Virginia Baseball

I don't know of a single show the ACC Network has shown featuring Syracuse content. Yes, they have shown a few old Syracuse games in football. Not sure if they have with basketball.

There are a lot of documentaries that already exist that could be shown. And a lot of great stories that could be done. But I am not aware of one show featuring Syracuse to date.

It is very disappointing.

Also very disappointed with the quality of the on air talent for ACC network. It looks like they wanted to get people from schools Clemson and ND on the air, regardless of whether they belong or not. I find it hard to watch people who are so bad at their job. Pretty much unwatchable.

Amen. I posted the same thing when the NW went live and got flamed for it (GoSU96, among them). Absolutely ridiculous southern bias in ACC programming, personnel and focus. They want our NE markets but aren't willing to balance the programming and that is not right.

Duke has "The Class That Saved Coach K"
UNC has "All-Access: A Season With Carolina Basketball" as well as the Michael Jordan special AND a Vince Carter marathon
UVA has "Unbelievable: Virginia's Improbable Path to a Title" AND "1186 to Omaha" about UVA baseball

Syracuse has... ?

(Gee, I didn't realize it was that one-sided until I wrote this)
