Welcome to National Tattoo Day!

Today is dedicated to tattoos, which are permanent marks made by adding pigment to ruptures in the skin. They are most commonly used for decoration but have served other purposes over time as well. Some have been used to show membership in groups, such as in gangs. Sadly, some people were given tattoos without any choice in the matter. In the nineteenth century, released US convicts and British army deserters were marked. Later, Siberian prisoners and those in Nazi concentration camps were given similar marks.

It is believed that marks on the world's oldest mummy, the Iceman, are tattoos. His remains date to 3300 BCE and his body has 60 lines and crosses on it. Similarly, Egyptian and Nubian mummies from 2200 BCE have been found to have tattoos. Classical authors mentioned the use of tattoos by groups such as the Greeks, Romans, and ancient Germans and Britons. After the rise of Christianity, tattooing was forbidden in Europe, but it remained in places such as the Middle East. Native Americans often tattooed their bodies and faces, and Europeans came across tattooing again when they came in contact with them and Polynesians. In 1769, explorer James Cook found tattooing on Tahiti. The natives called it "tatau," which is where the current name "tattoo" comes from.

Social Distance: Dino Babers on coaching Jimmy G (247sports.com; Marsdale)

In an appearance with Bud Elliott for the 247Sports Social Distance Series, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers discussed a number of topics. One of the first things he got into was coaching Jimmy Garoppolo at Eastern Illinois, a member of the FCS’ Ohio Valley Conference. He was the head coach there from 2012-13.

“Jimmy threw about five passes on the very first day of spring ball and I’m standing there saying, ‘this guy shouldn’t be here,’” Babers said. And the guy who said that said “That’s what I said! The other guy is better!’ And I said I didn’t say that. I just said he shouldn’t be here. There’s about 40 Division I coaches that should get fired. There’s no way this guy should be at the I-AA level. I had just left RGIII at Baylor and he had just won the Heisman. I’m sitting there saying ‘This guy shouldn’t be at this level.’”

Babers departed EIU for Bowling Green in 2014, where he led the Falcons to an 18-9 record over two seasons.

Dino Babers is the head football coach at Syracuse and he's also the latest guest in the 247Sports Social Distance Series. Recently Coach Babers joined Bud Elliot to discuss how Syracuse has handled the shutdown, what the overall attitude around the program is, and where Syracuse Football is headed once things return to normal. Carney: Syracuse football can return to bowl game in 2020 - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

Though there are ominous signs, the start of the Syracuse football season is scheduled for six weeks from now.

With that in mind, I chatted with three-time All Big East punter and former Syracuse football star Brendan Carney about the upcoming season. On the latest edition of The Juice on the Cuse Podast, I get his take on Sterling Hofrichter’s chances with the Atlanta Falcons, incoming freshman James Williams, and whether the Orange can get back to a bowl game in 2020.

Carney also talks about his experiences with playing for the Baltimore Ravens following his stellar Syracuse career and breaks down what Syracuse can do to finish in the upper tier of the ACC Atlantic.

TJO senior columnist Jim Stechschulte then calls in and we switch topics to Boeheim’s Army, who was unceremoniously eliminated from the 2020 TBT in the Elite 8. Jim talks about the overarching offensive problems that Boeheim’s Army experienced, and what can be done to fix it for 2021.

Jim’s closing thought encourages the NCAA and all colleges to re-evaluate whether fall sports is a smart idea in the midst of a global pandemic, while I talk about a Syracuse athlete who was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Syracuse Football: NCAA loosens up its rules for bowl eligibility in 2020 (itlh; Adler)

Who the heck knows if Syracuse football will even play this fall, but the NCAA has eased up its rules for teams to reach bowl eligibility in 2020.

Recent decisions by their respective conferences have eliminated Rutgers and Colgate from the Syracuse football non-conference calendar during the 2020 term.

Assuming an upcoming stanza actually occurs – and that’s a big if at this juncture – the Orange and some of its counterparts across the country could potentially benefit from the NCAA loosening up its rules for bowl eligibility as it relates to the 2020 season only.

The Division I Council has approved what it calls a “blanket waiver request” so that Football Bowl Subdivision (“FBS”) squads, such as the ‘Cuse, can count two contests versus Football Championship Subdivision (“FCS”) crews so long as these FCS groups meet minimum scholarship criteria. Under normal circumstances, an FBS team could count one encounter against an FCS foe toward bowl eligibility.

More from the NCAA press release. “Current FBS rules require an FCS opponent to have averaged 90 percent of the maximum number of football scholarships during a rolling two-year period for that game to count for bowl selection and scheduling requirements for the FBS team. The waiver allows the games to count if the FCS opponents average at least 80 percent.”

Okay, but how does this ruling by the Division I Council affect Syracuse football? That’s totally unclear. Rutgers and Colgate are off the schedule, leaving the Orange’s pair of non-conference clashes against Western Michigan and Liberty, which are both FBS squads.

It Might be Time to Evaluate Andre Cisco’s Legacy – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Klein)

Every Syracuse fan knows that Andre Cisco is destined for the NFL. His 12 interceptions led the nation over the past two seasons. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranked the reigning All-ACC Second Teamer as the second best safety in next year’s NFL Draft.

Given his accolades and draft stock, it’s safe to assume Cisco will turn pro after this season, if there is a season. He might have played his last game for Syracuse.

FIZZ FEEDBACK: Syracuse’s Andre Cisco was ranked as the second best safety in next year’s NFL Draft by Mel Kiper. Where do you think Cisco will he picked?

— Orange Fizz (@OrangeFizz) May 7, 2020
Even if the NCAA manages to fit a season in, it will not play out as scheduled. The Ivy League and Patriot League already cancelled non-conference games, with other conferences expected to follow. On ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday morning, Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelley insisted upon a 2020-2021 season, even if it means pushing it back to the spring. The 2021 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 29. It is unclear if and how a spring football schedule would conflict with the Draft preparation, combine and interviews.

That being said, Cisco should be remembered as the ultimate diamond in the rough, the three-star from Valley Stream, NY that gave people a reason to talk about Syracuse football.

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-football-schedule-acc-outside-the-box (SI; Boland)

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 announcing a conference-only football schedule, the pressure is on for the other Power Five conferences to make a decision on their upcoming seasons.

In a story written by David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, ACC athletic directors are mulling the possibility of its 14 football-playing schools, and Notre Dame, being split into three five-team geographic pods.

Each team would play a home-and-home against their pod opponents while working with the Southeastern Conference to add a possible ninth game to keep the four in-state rivalries between Clemson-South Carolina, Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech and Louisville-Kentucky.

“If you have to play somebody twice, play ’em twice. … Just make it easy to play some games," Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe told Teel. "I think the public would enjoy that, just the uniqueness of a season that certainly we will all remember.”

According to Teel, charter flights for ACC football teams cost about $80,000 to $100,000 per game while bus trips cost about a fifth of those numbers which could save teams nearly $200,000 in travel this season.

Here's what Teel wrote:

With coronavirus cases spiking, a regular-season beyond 10 games appears to be a pipe dream. And that would hold true if the season were delayed until spring since staging two complete college football seasons in a calendar year would be logistically and morally — think player safety — untenable. Now pods and multiple games against an opponent aren’t the sole way to craft an abbreviated season. The ACC could retain its divisions, Coastal and Atlantic, and count only those six games in the league standings, creating more flexibility with the remainder of the schedule and still preserving the ACC-SEC dates.

College Football Rankings 2020, CFN Previews Of All 130 Teams (CFN; Staff)

...
67. Boston College Eagles

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Quarterback
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 84
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 54
Boston College Quick Take: Boston College is a tough team to call under new head coach Jeff Hafley – it should be solid, but it might take some tweaking. The running game will be outstanding behind a great line, but the passing game has to sharpen up and the defensive front has to be a whole lot stronger.

65. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Wide Receiver
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 122
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 50
Georgia Tech Quick Take: Okay, okay, this is a bit of a call. Geoff Collins is too good a coach to have another awful year. Georgia Tech had to undergo a total overhaul, and it wasn’t easy. This year the experience is place to start doing a whole lot more, especially in the defensive back seven.

52. Syracuse Orange

Relative Strength: Secondary
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 79
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 25
Syracuse Quick Take: Dino Babers needs a big year to show that Syracuse football is more like 2018 than the disappointing 2019 version. Keeping QB Tommy DeVito from letting defensive lines wear him as a hat is Job One, but the defensive front seven has to be stronger.
– Syracuse 2020 CFN Team Preview

51. Duke Blue Devils

Relative Strength: Defensive Line
Relative Concern: Running Back
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 88
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 52
Duke Quick Take: Don’t get caught up in the football brand name – Duke has a whole lot of upside in what should be a sneaky-good season. The defense will be annoyingly good – annoying to the rest of the ACC – but the offense has to be more effective.

Who Might Virginia Play in an ACC-SEC Football Challenge? (streakingthelawn.com; Campbell)

With rumors of ongoing talks between the ACC and SEC to host an opening weekend “challenge” between the two conferences, it’s time we take a look at who the Virginia Cavaliers might play.

The SEC, like the ACC, features 14 teams spanning from Florida to Missouri and all the way to Texas, so the two conferences make an obvious regional rivalry to try and limit travel thanks to the ongoing pandemic (save Texas A&M going to BC or Syracuse).

Also, since Notre Dame are buttholes that want to keep their cake and eat it on NBC every weekend, they get left out. They can use the weekend to play the Navy Midshipmen (which we support)

The Obvious Rivalries

These games should be already set, so those teams are already eliminated:

Clemson Tigers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks. Dabo Jesus goes for his 30th straight win over UofSC and he hopes he does not have to pay his players, otherwise he’ll be forced to quit.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Florida Gators. FSU-Texas A&M would have been great, but the powers that be would force FSU on the Gators instead of Miami.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Georgia Bulldogs. Instituting this challenge means UVA is going to miss UGA in the opening weekend game on the “neutral field” in Atlanta. Darn.

Louisville Cardinals vs. Kentucky Wildcats. The Governor’s Cup has only been played 32 times, but hasn’t missed a season since 1994.

The Already Planned Games

Some ACC and SEC teams were already planning on playing this year, so we’ll go ahead and let them keep those scheduled.

N.C. State Wolfpack vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs. Announced back in 2014 (Kids playing now were in middle school. So dumb), the two schools have a home and home for the 2020 and 2021 season.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Auburn Tigers. The Tar Heels and Tigers were set to play a Week 2 game in Atlanta, so they might as well keep playing.

Geographic Pods for 2020 ACC Football? (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

Reports coming from David Teel at the Richmond Times-Dispatch indicate that the ACC is looking at a unique twist to help ACC football happen in the Fall and do it while preserving key SEC rivalry games.

“One proposal league athletic directors are considering is dividing the ACC’s 15 schools — traditional football independent and partial conference member Notre Dame would be included — into three geographic pods of five. Teams would play each pod rival twice, accounting for eight games.

The aim then would be, in concert with the Southeastern Conference, to add a ninth, and hopefully 10th, contest for each school, preserving the four annual ACC-SEC in-state rivalries: Clemson-South Carolina, Florida State-Florida, Georgia Tech-Georgia and Louisville-Kentucky.”

The pods idea is one that has been kicked around online for a while and it’s a good one. The unique twist here is Notre Dame is added to make it three pods of five and rather than playing several designated games outside of the pod there would be home-and-home contests against the teams in the pod. While playing the same team twice sounds terrible, retaining the game against U of SC and adding another (perhaps Georgia or Florida) makes up for it.

Hiking couple marry on Adirondack summit

High Peaks elopement: Hiking couple get married on Adirondack mountain summit (PS; Figura)

Melanie Waldow and Zack Sobieraski’s wedding day began at 12:30 a.m. Monday at the trailhead of an Adirondack High Peak.

Despite heavy rain storm warnings throughout the weekend, the Rochester couple decided to make a go of it late Sunday afternoon and follow through on their decision to elope. They had originally planned a wedding in Lake Placid at a hotel with some 60 guests for late August, but cancelled it due to the Coronavirus pandemic

Leaving the trailhead parking lot in darkness, the two hiked nearly 5 miles in warm, balmy conditions with a photographer to the summit of Algonquin Mountain, a trek of more than 3 ½ hours. They carried their wedding clothes and shoes in their packs, along with water and protein bars to munch on.

“I considered bringing up a small wedding cake, but logistically, I couldn’t see packing one extra Tupperware container in my pack with my clothes, shoes and all,” Zack said.

The photographer, Whitney Tracy, of Mountainaire Gatherings Photography, helped by carrying a flower bouquet made by a Plattsburgh florist. She had also agreed to double duty: to not only take pictures of the couple for their sunrise ceremony, but to act as the officiant to marry them.

Zack, a Rochester police officer, and Melanie, a veterinary technician, have hiked 21 of the Adirondack High peaks together. The two said it was Tracy, whose specialties include “adventure elopement photography,” who suggested they scale Algonquin for the summit ceremony.

“The general consensus of our friends was that no one was surprised that we did this,” Melanie said.
